It surprises him.

[break][break] Just as their eyes meet, the sparkle of LIFE DEW and HEAL PULSE converge on the fallen god. The phoenix's feathers are imbued with light as it flourishes back to life, it's feathers growing from the color of dead embers to the burning hue of a brilliant flame.

[break][break] Beside the Councilwoman, Ollie stands strong and true. He will be steady, will be firm, will be her rock in times of distress. Fingers tangle with her, squeezing tight, as they stare at the fallen bird together.

[break][break] "Get up!" he says alongside her. "We won't let you die here."

[break][break] Magma bubbles beneath the surface of the cavern as the SOUL DEW continues, filling in the cracks of the burning cavern a healthy powder blue.

[break][break] Even with the explanation, it still made the Head Ranger furrow his brows in confusion. Then, suddenly, an old memory resurfaced. Of that one perfect week he and PENELOPE LIVY had spent hanging out in her apartment, of the sound of the TV running, of volleyball boys running across the screen.

[break][break] "Oh!" he said with a nod, even though he still didn't quite understand. "Osu!"

[break][break] With a broad grin, Ollie nodded at the other boy as he watched their pokemon fight on the field.

[break][break] FLARE BLITZ scorches Tofu, who lets out a shout of pain. "Take advantage of that recoil!" Ollie shouts, pointing his finger out. "Electro Ball!"

[break][break] Crackling electricity forms a yellow sphere in front, where the Pikachu slaps it down, causing it to ricochet across towards the Arcanine.

[attr="class","textbody"] Ollie had been feeling good. Now, he was not exactly as strong as some of the other contenders in the circuit, but winning had never been the point for him. He had enrolled because he wanted to meet more people — because he needed to get his mind off things — and figured that whatever experience gained in the process would be good enough for him.

[break][break] Wins, losses, none of it mattered as long as he could —

[break][break] And then, on that tiny piece of paper with his next opponent's name on it, he had seen the words in simple print.

Didn't know the reason for the uneasy way that he stood at the opposite end of the arena, as if he was waiting on his first date, or waiting for Pa to scold him over something stupid he'd done. Maybe it was a bit of both. 'No, that's stupid,' he chided himself. He and Caleb - there was nothing wrong. There was never anything wrong, when it came to the two of them.

[break][break] Forcing on a bright smile, Ollie glanced up just to see that familiar whip of brown hair at the opposite end of the field. Those cobalt eyes that sent a bolt of electricity down his spine no matter what.

[break][break] "Caleb," he greeted, warmly. An attempt, at least. He approached the other man, easily, as if nothing at all was the matter. And maybe he wished it hard enough, it would come true.

[break][break] Tofu, ignorant of all the human's problems (or maybe he simply didn't care), looked eagerly for his next opponent. In his hands, he held a churro.

[break][break] Not that the Head Ranger seemed to notice, though, as their pokemon clashed fiercely on the battlefield in front of them. Fire and flame encased the Pikachu as Incineroar increased the heat.

[break][break] "That sounds so good, I can't wait - oi! Tofu!" Distracted by the temptation of sweets, he got too distracted and almost forgot that he was in a battle. Ollie quickly grasped his Dynamax band and triggered it, consuming the small Pikachu in light that quickly tripled it in size. The tail that the Incineroar had in it's hands grew too, to a catastrophic amount, just a violent DISCHARGE broke across the earth.

[break][break] Well, of course, as long as Tofu remained smaller than the opposing bear.

[break][break] Time to change the tide of things, then.

[break][break] "Let's show 'em, Tofu!" The Head Ranger raises his arm, band glowing with fierce light. The gleam of the League's insignia is visible as his uniform glows with golden light, causing his Pikachu to triple with catastrophic size. Beams take over the battlefield as the Pikachu covers the winter sun with his sheer size, casting shadow upon the bear as it casts it's fierce ICE PUNCH..

[break][break] The tiny fist is nothing in the face of a superhuman beast, to which Tofu grins fiercely.

[break][break] Ground trembles, cracking with the effort of a sudden surge, as a G-MAX VOLT tears through the atmosphere.

[break][break] That factor is better suited to Eva Morales, the smarter of the Morales'.

[break][break] In fact, the smartest of probably most of the bright minds in the region.

[break][break] "Dodge!" he barks, just as the rocks come chasing for him. Tofu leaps across the pavement, body swelling in green light as TRAILBLAZE consumes him. Leafs and flowers abound under his feet as he dodges the attack, before aiming a headbutt towards the other's chest.

[break][break] The flare of competition blazes bright in his eyes as he launches his first attack — an IRON TAIL aimed to sweep the fighting type off his face.

[break][break] Growling with annoyance, the Pikachu leaps forward. His tiny paws press tight against the pavement, body trembling with the effort, when the earth suddenly shakes with movement. Water leaks beneath the gravel, lifting a sudden SURF that is pushed towards the Sylveon to consume him.

[break][break] When the power of his Pikachu's IRON TAIL is able to break through the Primarina's defense, there is a brief moment of excitement before the SPRINGTIDE STORM blasts him back against the pavement. Pain strikes through the electric-type as he rolls against the floor, scrambling back to his feet.

[break][break] "You okay, Tofu?" Ollie shouts. "Don't give up - you got this!"

[break][break] Electricity crackling around the Pikachu's cheeks, Tofu releases an onslaught of DISCHARGE.
