like a breath held, the draciary exhales back into normalcy. annalise stands up stiffly and glances in the direction of the main sanctum, listening to the shuffle of volunteers as they return to work. her gaze slides toward freya morningstar , to her blood-slicked forehead, and wordlessly follows her over to the sink. [break][break]the councilwoman hadn't asked her to come, she realizes, but the potential of hearing the answer to her question compels her footsteps. her story falls away, but annalise attributes it to the distraction of washing the blood off her hands. [break][break]"that's amazing. someone in your family must've been at least close to the draconids to have learned all that."[break][break]in a way, it explains everything. freya's and the morningstar's affinity for the dragons is not just the usual brand of appreciation. [break][break]"do you know anyone else who can speak it?"[break][break]and before freya abandons the sink, she points to her own forehead. like warning a girl who has lipstick on her teeth, it's a gesture of long and lost sisterhood — just with more viscera. [break][break] "wait, you, um, got some blood on you, i think."

[break][break]it's nice to talk to someone who takes their ranger work seriously. the beginning of her career is pockmarked by missions with parolees and jaded community service workers — people forced to work alongside her who desperately wanted to just be done with it and go home.[break][break] their surveying loops them back to mauville's ranger headquarter. her rapidash slows its pace as the familiar building comes into view. as anticipated, Josh Devlin asks about his beedrill. from her jacket pocket, she produces his pokemon's pokeball. [break][break] "no trouble at all," she reassures, tossing the metal ball for him to catch. it's an unceremonious end to what she knows must have been a long and heartbreaking separation. [break][break]"rehab went great. he follows instruction really well and he's not so beedrill aggressive like he used to be."

[break][break]a plastic bag crinkles in her hand as she moves to set it on the empty chair at his bedside. before she can say anything about its contents, his request makes her look up at him, then to the aforementioned window. [break][break]"oh? yeah, sure."[break][break]she crosses the room and reaches for the window with an arm still stiff and healing from fighting Shred. the downpour outside mists her skin as she shuts it, dampening the steady sound of rain and rushing water. [break][break]there's so much she wants to say, so much she wants to ask, but nothing feels right. she turns back to him. [break][break]"i brought you food. can you eat? i figured you must be so sick of hospital food by now."

[break][break]another man (Zev Harcourt ) takes her free hand. she turns her head just enough to peer at him through the edge of her visor. he cuts a tall, intimidating figure beside her. rocket, she assumes immediately, furtively checking to see if the underboss on the other side of her acknowledges him. [break][break]her attention divides between the tera crystal display overhead and the dissonance in the prisoners around her. a man — Navy , she realizes after a chillingly familiar voice speaks out against him — votes for them. THEO BECKETT is in her ear, telling her to ignore the rabble, but she scarcely hears him as she zeroes in on freya morningstar 's voice among the voters. [break][break]it's a small comfort to know she has allies here. she just has to get over to her, somehow — [break][break]pain pulls her away from the thought, squarely grounding her next to theo as he votes. his hand grasps hers, squeezing hard enough to elicit a small, pained sound out of her. [break][break]she has to vote with him, with them. anything else just creates enemies in this ward and in the others at this point. there will be a time to fight back, she hopes, but for now she lets the current take her. overhead, amidst moral arguments between ugly ward prisoners, votes from the other wards come in beat by beat. [break][break]he only says one word, but she cranes to look up at the screens. she could recognize Greyson Connors anywhere. his voice, his mannerisms, his goodness wrapped neatly in his TRUST vote. [break][break]seeing him gives her the conviction to condemn the others. [break][break]"dummy ward," she votes, falling in line with the rest.

[break][break]a frown creases her mouth as june stumbles over the end of her story, staring at the back of her head as she faces the isolating storm outside of the power station. it comes out eventually, with great difficulty, and annalise's expressions deepens with pity. [break][break]annalise wavers in her spot, measuring the best approach to express her sympathy. slowly, she approaches from behind, her fingers brushing against june's shoulder. it's an invitation for comfort just as much as it's a signal to a ceasefire. [break][break]"you're here," she echoes, quiet beneath the rumble of thunder outside. guilt prickles at her now that she knows the full weight of june's promise. "and it's not stupid or childish — it's important to you. and ... and i think you should keep trying if that's what you promised your dad you'd do."[break][break]every impulse demands she grab the steering wheel and tug june's life in a safer direction, but by what right does she have to come between june and the dream that keeps her father alive? she's not a concerned friend, she's a half-stranger sticking her hands in june's affairs. and it's so hard to stop meddling now that she's mired herself in it.[break][break]"i'm sorry for throwing your promise in your face earlier," she adds apologetically. i didn't know rests on her tongue, but she swallows it down.

[break][break]she nods. it has been a long time since littleroot, since freya swept up all her dragons and disappeared without a word. if freya has changed since then, then anna will stop picking at these old betrayals like scabs. annalise ruminates on THEO BECKETT 's answer, scrubbing the shard in her hand until she sees her warped reflection upon its surface. her head remains bowed, strands of hair curling over the perimeter of her mask as she works. the never-rot is their leader (presumably, as he says) and their ward — the ugly ward — is (again, presumably) the bottommost. [break][break]her answer takes the shape of a small, acknowledging inclination of her head. [break][break]"we need to win."[break][break]she discards the previous topic like slag from a mineral vein. the less cohesive their conversation is, the more they can cover. beneath her mask, she takes clandestine glances at those around them, measuring how many tera shards remain, lingering on bodies and concealed faces for any familiarity she can act upon.
