Hot-tempered? Yes. Reckless? Most certainly. But stupid? No, the young woman standing before Nomi was far more intelligent than she likely gave herself credit for.[break][break]
"I would not waste my time on someone I thought incapable of understanding our current predicament."[break][break]
It was a blunt statement, but a true one. She glanced at the Unown-D, still terrified for its life, and held out her hand to it. Slowly...it drifted back to her, its big, singular eye turning towards Kallistatus, as if hoping another of its kind might make the scary human go away.[break][break]
"The DRK Triad are people, like you and me," she began, acquiescing: the request for more information was not an unreasonable one. "And like all humans, they have flaws, selfish desires, and personal agendas. They want to destroy our world before it can become the catalyst for a cosmic, universes-ending apocalypse."[break][break]
She let the gravity of that statement hang between them for a moment, before continuing.[break][break]
"They are dangerous because of their beliefs. They claim to work for Arceus. They are zealots, at their core. Religious fanatics, who happen to have access to technological advancements we - here in Hoenn - are only just starting to scratch the surface of. They also have their own Unown that work for them, and legendary Pokemon they have captured to do their bidding."[break][break]
A hint of bitterness colored her tone.[break][break]
"But my Unown," she indicated Kallistatus with the nod of her head. "They betrayed the DRK Triad. They want to help us save our world." She nodded at the fearful Unown-D. "They aren't our enemies, and deserve our kindness for the risk they are taking in turning against their former masters."[break][break]
Nomi took a deep breath. It was a lot, but the young woman had asked for - demanded - these answers.[break][break]
"I'm not asking you to join Rocket or the League. I'm simply asking you to oppose the DRK Triad. Maybe all that looks like right now is..." She smiled at the Unown-D. "Being kinder to this little guy."

Priam's indecision spurred Nomi to act on his behalf. With the wave of her hand, she summoned a wall of blue crystal around the tree. It shimmered, a glittering dome of possibility, too quickly generated for the Crobat to avoid. They slammed into it, already deterred somewhat by Priam's stick, bouncing off the solid substance with dazed expressions.[break][break]
"Find a different meal!" She shouted up at them, sweat beading along her hairline from the exertion of altering reality. Several of the bat Pokemon flew away in fear, but one or two loomed overhead, more angry than afraid.[break][break]
"Kal?" Nomi turned to the shiny Unown-K. Normally, she had no desire to attack wild Pokemon unless she were defending herself - or she needed them for her experiments - but this tree was special, and she didn't want its fruit eaten before they had a chance to properly study it.[break][break]
A HIDDEN POWER blasted forth, scattering the remaining Crobat, but not before two waves of AIR SLASH blew wind in their direction, knocking Nomi back a step.[break][break]
"I wonder what drew them to the tree? Do you think the fruit smells that good?"[break][break]
She glanced down at the one she still held in the crook of her arm. It didn't radiate its scent in a particularly strong way...but there were other ways Pokemon could detect power, she supposed.

The strange recording - or was it a living voice? - died down, and Nomi's attention was drawn back to Theo. She stared blankly at him, crimson eyes betraying her confusion.[break][break]
"All is well?" She echoed. His statement wasn't mockery, as she'd first suspected. She could see it in the way his mouth remained fixed in a neutral line, the way his eyes were hardened by hardship: he was serious.[break][break]
Someone who has never lived a double life...[break][break]
Running her hand along the smooth surface of the control panel, cold and sterile, she considered his perspective more thoroughly. He was life-long Rocket, she knew. From Kanto, like her brother jayden cross. Inducted as a teenager, raised on war, brainwashed into being staunchly loyal to the organization's vision of global takeover. Of course someone like that would have little use for an alternate identity meant to protect: why would he hide what he is from the world, when the world would soon be his to rule?[break][break]
"The advice I am seeking isn't about how to live my life, now that I've been outed," she murmured softly. "What I want is to ensure that PENELOPE LIVY cannot hurt me or the people I love ever again."

Howard deliberately sipped the scalding tea as if in rebellion - against Nomi or the DRK Triad, she wasn't entirely sure. Perhaps he simply wanted to prove that he still had some semblance of agency, in the face of such an overwhelming revelation about their swiftly collapsing world.[break][break]
"They are wrong," she agreed, with an adamant edge to her tone. "Precisely because they have not, as of yet, provided any hard evidence - any real proof - that what they believe is, in fact, the truth."[break][break]
She paused, glanced down at her own tea. She waved a hand over it, an old practice of her grandmother's. Tendrils of heat tickled the palm of her hand. She continued to wait.[break][break]
"You bring up the human condition. As you should - it is highly relevant to our predicament."[break][break]
Kallistatus drifted from Howard to Nomi, sensing a shift in the conversation: predicting its own imminent involvement in their discourse.[break][break]
"The DRK Triad are people. They are selfish, and their agenda is, in all likelihood, not as altruistic as it may seem. I myself have noticed some inconsistencies in their narrative. Not only that, but I have reason to believe they are not as united as they claim to be."[break][break]
She met Kallistatus's gaze, then.[break][break]
"But, above all else, Kallistatus and many of its kin were willing to betray them. And I think that matters a great deal, Howard, because I am fairly confident that the Unown are the only living creatures capable of finding Arceus."[break][break]
The Unown were the eyes of God. If they were divided on the DRK Triad's involvement with Arceus, that was very telling indeed.

The kettle whined, and Nomi took it from the burner. Daintily, she filled each mug with steaming water, listening as Howard summarized his impressive academic resume. A different sort of man might sound arrogant while rattling off the various topics of his expertise, but Howard did so matter-of-factly, humble in his own acknowledgement of how unhelpful his vast knowledge base happened to be in this specific context.[break][break]
Kallistatus seemed to shimmer brighter, as if preening, singular eye rolling upwards to gaze at Howard with an adoring air as it was pet. Nomi shook her head, amused.[break][break]
"Is it connected to the DRK Triad?" She echoed. A soft clink announced the arrival of their mugs on the table, and her presence sitting across from Howard. "It is the reason they are here."[break][break]
They'd coined the term, after all. Or perhaps Arceus had. It was the Original One, after all.[break][break]
"The DRK Triad believe our Hoenn - universe 820 to be exact - will be the catalyst of a great disaster. An apocalypse. This is why they refer to us as the Origin Point."[break][break]
Nomi kept her voice clinical, detached from the horror of such a revelation.[break][break]
"They are hoping to destroy us before this cataclysmic event can take place."[break][break]
The tea was surely too hot to drink. Discipline kept her from sipping it too soon.[break][break]

Nomi forced her bruised and broken body to scramble after Greyson Connors, following him deeper into the prison - to a chamber below the feeding pit. All around them, familiar and unfamiliar faces and figures fought back against the waves of guards and obstacles that threatened to demoralize and deter them.[break][break]
A sliding door scraped against the floor, an ominous harbinger of a new threat. Nomi watched the ogre-like creature that had hit her in the feeding pit so many days (months? years? or had it been hours?) ago step into the room, swatched in flame and radiating a sweltering heat. Its mask was massive, glittering with carnelian crystal burning with power. Behind it, Nihilego swarmed, their STEALTH ROCKS an added impediment.[break][break]
Nomi froze, and though her instincts screamed to take cover before the masked ogre filled the entire room with flame, she couldn't help but notice a glowing crack along the mask. It was the same glowing crack she'd seen embedded within Shred's boulder before he broke it; the same cracks she'd noticed on various body parts of the guards: where she had directed Greyson to hit.[break][break]
The mask gives her strength, but that is also her weakness.[break][break]
Another figure nearby seemed capable of identifying it too, Nomi realized.[break][break]
"You see it too, don't you?" Nomi called out to Elaine Highland. "We need to tell everyone - !"[break][break]
A different person darted forward, attempting to grapple the masked Pokemon. Nomi recognized her instantly - for she knew her voice, and knew her kindness. Andrea Vaneau, despite the danger of getting too close to their fiery adversary, was trying to help it.[break][break]
The DRK Triad treat the Unown like tools. I offered them love instead, Nomi had told Andrea once.[break][break]
"ANDREA!" She yelled, rushing forward to assist the other woman in holding back the ogre. "The mask! We need to remove or damage the mask! That's her weakness, and I think we can do it without hurting her."[break][break]
Anyone can make a difference in the fight to preserve our world.[break][break]
A sudden jolt of pain coursed through Nomi, then, and she almost lost her grip. It felt as if she were burning up from the inside out. She coughed up a dribble of blood, the bright crimson a stark contrast against the dull floor. When she glanced down at her own TOXIC CHAIN, her chest constricted in fear.[break][break]
That same glowing crack of weakness she'd identified in their enemies? It marred her chain too.[break][break]
It was within all of their chains.[break][break]

As Yuina's arms wrapped around her without warning, pulling her into a warm embrace, Nomi stiffened in shock. She was the Visionary, seer and prophet, and yet, the very first question asked of her was an entirely unforeseen inquiry: one she never could have predicted.[break][break]
Are you okay?[break][break]
Nomi crumbled, returning the hug with a burst of enthusiasm, tears welling in her eyes as she held Yuina so tightly it was as if she was worried the other woman might suddenly disappear. She sniffed, a lump forming in the back of her throat.[break][break]
"No," she admitted softly. It was the first time she'd accepted it; the first time she'd ever truly acknowledged how shaken she was by PENELOPE LIVY's accusations. By her hateful revenge.[break][break]
"I'm not okay. But I will be okay. Eventually."[break][break]
An awkward silence fell, but Nomi didn't shy away from it. She simply allowed herself to take comfort in Yuina's compassion.[break][break]
She did, eventually, break from the hug, eyes puffy and cheeks slightly reddened with mild embarrassment. She coughed, then waved for Yuina to follow her inside.[break][break]
"Follow me to the kitchen. We can talk there, and I'll make tea, if you'd like."

The beginning?[break][break]
She could take him to the very beginning, if he wished. The Unown had shown her the moment of creation: when Arceus had said, "let there be light." She could take him to the day she'd interrogated Nisa Holo during the Meteno incident, those cruel peridot eyes meeting Nomi's for the very first time, so full of zealous pride. She could take him to the moment of her ascension, when the Unown had made her their Avatar, setting her on the path of prophecy in lieu of scientific advancement.[break][break]
"There are many beginnings," she murmured, preparing two empty mugs with tea bags: a traditional Sencha from Johto. "So I will answer your question with a question, for which you must forgive me."[break][break]
Kallistatus drifted over to Howard, and hovered at his shoulder expectantly. The shiny Unown-K had taken a liking to the Admin. Or perhaps to Regice. Which was the same thing, really.[break][break]
"How much do you know about Hoenn? Our Hoenn," she emphasized. "Does the term Origin Point mean anything to you?"

"I have been publicly outed as a criminal," she answered dryly, doing nothing to hide the bitterness in her tone. "Councilwoman Livy has no proof, so she cannot arrest me outright, but the damage has been done. I've had to drop out of school so I can lay low for a bit. My civilian identity has been compromised."[break][break]
Surely he'd read the reports. Seen the wanted ad.[break][break]
The spacecraft's control panel hummed to life, causing several lights within the half-decayed bridge to flicker on as a result. Nomi blinked, eyes adjusting to the brightness.[break][break]
She forced the anger to subside, her own pride giving way to her original intention to ask Theo for guidance regarding her current predicament.[break][break]
"I was actually hoping that, perhaps, you could give me some advice on the matter."[break][break]
A sudden burst of static sounded, loud and crackling, and Nomi jumped in surprise. A robotic voice began to speak, the words barely discernible...[break][break]

Nomi hesitated, weighing whether or not she ought to simply pretend she wasn't at home...but because she trusted the Unown, she eventually cracked open her front door. Familiar crimson eyes peered out at Yuina, a mix of curious and guarded.[break][break]
"Hello," she greeted warily, though a small smile touched her lips as she noticed Nigma floating dutifully beside the brown-haired young woman. "I suppose you have some questions for me, don't you."[break][break]

The issue would be the power source, of course. They could recruit Zev Harcourt to do their bidding, but mass destruction like the laser unleashed during the battle with Kyurem would likely draw unwanted attention their way. And the goal wasn't to destroy the Rocket sub, or part of Sootopolis, after all. Admin Bee had used the words "controlled environment", and he was right: they needed the experiment to have the same effect, but on a smaller scale.[break][break]
"Tera crystals are easy enough to procure these days," she mused. "And I am confident Lulu Flint can provide dream mist for experimental purposes." Her mentor had been building a dream machine for some time, she knew. "But where do we get the power? Not so much as to cause another calamity, but enough to recreate the effect..."[break][break]
She glanced at Kallistatus, who hovered by Admin Bee's shoulder.[break][break]

Nomi had never, in fact, been within ten feet of "Sloppy Sam's". Not because she was too good for the grease-ridden establishment, but because she hadn't even known about its existence until the Jones sisters had pointed it out to her. Too many nights spent cooped up in her dorm room, studying frantically for exams. Too few friends to invite her out to eat in the first place.[break][break]
Isaac would love this, she realized, surveying the rag-tag crowd huddled around Sam's smudged take-out window. It had "for the people" vibes, the sort of place that could just as easily devolve into drunken late-night revelry as it could rally the heart of a revolution.[break][break]
But Isaac Merlo was off being the League's newest Avatar, and she wasn't supposed to talk to him anymore.[break][break]
"Trashcan fries sound good." The menu was overwhelming. A thousand different ways to melt cheese on meat. "And maybe one of those burger dogs?"[break][break]

It wasn't the DRK Triad after all. It was just a regular woman, though she had a somewhat...regal air about her. Sleek purple hair, attire that was more sophisticated than it was practical, and the sort of mannerisms that hinted at an expertise in etiquette.[break][break]
Nomi couldn't decide if she was relived or disappointed. Either way, she was curious.[break][break]
"You aren't in my way," Nomi assured the woman, approaching from behind the Unown-F. The symbol Pokemon continued drifting ahead, orbiting the woman like a miniature moon. Nomi smiled, amused.[break][break]
"It likes you," she noted.[break][break]
Nomi surveyed the area, noticing the especially large cluster of Tera crystals the woman had clearly been studying.[break][break]
"Are you here to research the cave system too?" She asked.
