Diancie was so caught up in the momentary display of true synchronization between mon and girl.[break][break]
That awe, too, passes. It is met by a roaring indignant yell, unbecoming of a princess. Light gathers, reflected in alexandrite splendor. Another blast will come. She turns the very ground beneath their feet into her domain, raising a jagged spear of stone from the ground to tear apart the interlopers.[break][break]
Eris and Reiner both disappear. Diancie blinks, only to see the substitute that replaced them deflate upon the edge of a brilliant pink gem. Hattori gently places both of them down, falling into place beside them.[break][break]
“I think that just ‘bout does it.” Navy says, inserting himself once more into the play. Stepping forward, he wears the same casual, practiced nonchalance as always. “Come on, Diancie. Looks like we’ll call it a dr-”[break][break]
She launches another moonblast, this one aimed at Hattori. It skirts over his head, the miniscule Greninja saved by his reaction time. Laying flat against the ground, he feels his body singed by moonlight.

It is said that honesty is a virtue. Honest hearts make for honest actions. When Andrea’s questions are asked, they are met by a moment of silence. Navy runs a hand through his hair, as if that will conjure up an answer. Sorting through a haze of memories, he does math in his head. Most of the answers he comes up with, he doesn’t think she’ll like. Nothing good will come of being honest.[break][break]
“Twenty people, at least. Gotta be. Our ward is…it’s big. Lots…lots of folk who are Rockets. Didn’t see Matias. Saw his brother. The Silph.”[break][break]
As for the rest?[break][break]
“I…I don’t know, Andrea. I was in the hospital for a week before all this started. A Sootopolis hospital.” His eyes shift away. If they leave this prison one day, and that seems a dicey proposition at best, he’ll be in a bad way. It makes him shift uncomfortably where he sits.[break][break]
“Are Jalapeno and Chomper okay?” When he asks the question, his eyes move to the building across the street, where Hattori floats like some dead thing lost at sea.

People pass him by without looking. With his newfound mental acuity, Navy reminisces about life in Slateport. He was one of the people towering above him, once. Life in the city imparts certain lessons. Sympathy is precious currency. Spread too much good will and you yourself will end up destitute.[break][break]
This is his reward. Although his mind is as it should be, a first for a very long time, his body can’t move. Unless strangers help him get from point A to point B, he is simply stuck resting. Across the street, floating in a vat of green liquid, is Shuwen. The daycare is empty save for him and some other Pokemon, unseen from where Navy sits.[break][break]
His bear deserves better. A familiar face passing by breaks the reverie.[break][break]
“Eris?” It is the first time Eris has seen Navy in weeks, ever since he went missing.

He basks in the shadow of neon beauty. Within this world, his mind is his own. The body still refuses to comply. Fatigue catches up to a man that tried to do too much.[break][break]
All he can do is close his eyes and pray for rest, true rest. Across the street, suspended in strange green liquid, Hattori floats like a dead science specimen. It rouses anger in him, the single thread of resistance left against his new masters. As wroth as the sight makes him, he is in no shape to do anything about it. Instead, with no other option available, he drips his head and rest.[break][break]
That is how Andrea finds him. Navy’s head is unmasked, but obscured at first all the same. Long, dark hair and a full, now unkempt beard makes him look the part of a vagrant. Her voice rouses him from false rest. Looking up at her, his vacant gray eyes take on a glassy sheen in reflected pink light.[break][break]
“Andrea?” At least here, he can speak in a clear voice. “Arceus…they got you, too?”

Submerged as he feels, the sheriff still endeavors to resurface. Turning his attention away from indifferent lighting, he finds himself facing a man. Unfocused gray eyes search him for details, clues hidden across every human’s body. His body language, the colors he wears, so many other little overlooked things can tell him all about a person.[break][break]
What truths this doctor hides remain hidden, save one: the omnipresent R. There is no warmth in the man’s voice. Like most doctors he’s had the poor fortune of meeting, his bedside manner is lacking. Navy seizes up, like some caged thing unsure of whether it’s about to be shot with a tranquilizer dart.[break][break]
Silence follows the doctor’s statement. Gray eyes, chained in their haze, try to focus on the doctor’s own eyes. They settle somewhere around the nose.[break][break]
“Sor…sorry, doc…” A good-natured, if false, laugh leaves his lips after the last word. Somewhere around the second ‘ha’, it turns into a coughing fit. Moving to cover his mouth, the cuffs keep him in place. Instead, he turns sharply away and coughs towards the wall.[break][break]
“Fuck…Temp really did…a number on me.” It wasn’t just Tempest Quinn, it is the sum of all his sins and virtue coming to take their due.[break][break]
“Am I a prisoner?” His voice shakes, but not from fear. “Must be…but why ain’t I being treated in a prison cell on the sub?” When the words are spoken, he is on awe that he managed to get through the sentence. All he can do once the words are said is lay there and pray for answers that don’t plunge his heart into his stomach.

His arms and legs wrap around her in the darkness. With no eyes to see, he is reduced to feeling his way through what comes next. It starts with a push, all his weight pressing downward. Tsubaki is in his arms. That’s a start. Whatever Eternatus thinks, He cannot have Tsubaki. He can’t have Gabe, He can’t have Crystal. So long as he has working muscles and two raging fists, he can still fight. So, he pushes.[break][break]
It feels like he is sliding down something long and warm, tearing Tsubaki from a prison of flesh. She looked like a corpse he once read about, frozen forever, perfectly preserved. His daughter yet lives. She must return to the world. All he has to do is push.[break][break]
Navy fades in and out. He shifts between old and young, blue and red. Fever dreams of a bygone time bring to mind the crown that his king and queen once wore. It evokes the heavy crown of heroes and the burden they bear. Somewhere along the way, his head crests the edge of the darkness.[break][break]
He feels the edge of oblivion, the end of pain. One last push and they are free. His hands, torn open, bloody, red, reach for his eyes and rip the growths there off. It is a return to red, pain flashing before him. Yet, at last, he can see.[break][break]
Tsubaki falls with him, a trail of black viscera trailing after them. They fall like a star, a reminder of the universe’s primordial birth. They fall, and fall, and he is just happy that she is there with him.[break][break]

All is as it should be. They are in their cells, their appointed place. Before them is a future that leads to precisely where the pale, sickly rider wants to be. One day, if he can simply hold on, he will see his children again.[break][break]
That alleviates the present about as much as a band-aid a Nihilego sting. Navy slumps, again, saying nothing until the mochi comes. His hand reaches out, pawing for the offered food like a frail, freshborn thing. His hands shake, but his jaw works well enough once the food makes it into his mouth. He chews, and everything feels better. He has strength enough to speak a few words.[break][break]
“Like…I look…” Navy’s smile is threadbare as the clothes they woke up wearing. The thin line spreads across his face, no joy in the tilt of his lips.[break][break]
“I’m, I’m…sorry, man…” Slumping, all he can do is offer an apology. “Just…those people, they don’t deserve to get hurt. I can take a punch…” A cough breaks up the words, aimed away from the mochi. There’s blood in the cough. No doctor, he is unable to tell whether something inside him is bleeding, or if his fatigue has progressed to something more serious.[break][break]
“Didn’t mean…to get you caught up in my…bullshit…”

“They’re in a cave, not far from here. Granite Cave. You’ve probably seen it in postcards or something. Back before I got here, the place was just a tourist trap. Sort of place that drove archaeologists crazy. Now? Well…”[break][break]
He gulps. Navy does not fear these monsters. Not personally. He fears what horror they could inflict on the people around him.[break][break]
“Sometimes, they poison stuff. Send it out into the town. Pokemon, ones that look all fucked up. Barnacles for eyes, seaweed growing instead of hair. Weird shit. On top of that, Rocket tries to sneak into the cave on the regular. Keeping them out’s a full-time job.”[break][break]
As the words leave his mouth, he considers once more how all this must sound. Navy knows a man of action when he sees one. Instead of more talking, he finishes off his drink and stands up.[break][break]
“Fuck it. It sounds crazy when you just hear about it. Come on, I’ll show you.”

Sealife blossoms along his arms, the wounds growing and dying in endless eternal repetition. Barnacles decay, only to grow again. Maggots crawl and turn into flies, falling dead out of the shell. Nihilego are beautiful, false sirens guiding the way. They are not meant to be touched.[break][break]
He’s too dumb to quit, especially when he’s in this deep. Her wrists grab him, holding him there steel securing him to an electric chair. Whatever possesses her has made a false assumption: that his first instinct would be to pull away. There’s human wisdom in that course of action, to shy away from pain. Human wisdom will not avail him.[break][break]
Instead, he pushes inward, a violent assault upon the black afterbirth. Dark tentacles creep up to sting him, to spread the sea through the rest of his battered body. Hattori clings to him, lashing out with a kunai at anything that gets too close. The frog is inhumanly fast, inhumanly fierce, inhumanly small. Though this course is foolish, it isn’t his place to question.[break][break]
“Listen to you, spouting all these five dollar words when you can’t even go to class—” His words are cut off as his head plunges beneath the surface. Both eyes shut on reflex, new life springing over them. His hands grab her. Navy kicks back, muscles crying out from strain.[break][break]
From far away, he hears the sound of something growing. The winds of winter course through the chamber, rolling over all of them. Somewhere in his distant mind, he asks a simple question.[break][break]
What the hell’s going on out there?

His path ahead is straightforward. All he must do is have faith in his dragon. The creature is made for races like this. A steady stream of bubbles leaves his nose, a trail for those behind him. Racers far ahead jolt up, speeding like rockets launching into orbit.[break][break]
Both hands grip the reins tighter. Leviathan is ready for this, as is the man who rides him. He bought the ticket. The world’s watching. Now, he just has to take the ride. He rises, rises, rises.[break][break]
Air fills his lungs. His hat flies behind him in the wind, desperately clinging to the man wearing it by a leather strap.[break][break]
“Woooo! Yeah!” He screams, laughing and having the time of his life all the way down.
