the way that the other woman spoke and moved only increased the dream-like quality of it all. mika took a moment of reprieve for herself, gently moving so that her legs would dangle into the water's edge, her supplies carefully laid on the dry land next to her. her altaria had moved slowly in the lapras' direction, closing his eyes against the healing power of life dew. [break][break]

the vigorous movements of the gyarados drew mika's attention, and she exhaled softly, amazed at the power and presence of these water-type pokemon. as altaria healed and talonflame roosted, mika looked towards the other and said, "battles for miles along the shoreline. battles in the ocean, too, and fliers up ahead. i think... we have the edge over rocket. for now." then she rummaged through her bag, pulling out some sensitive paper work among other informational items. "someone told me to get this back to the league. i was worried i wouldn't have a chance to rest before then." she'd certainly do her part, though. before that, they took the time to ask, "and i hope you're alright yourself? your setup here has really helped me out." aloe had listened so intently, mika's cheeks felt warm, shaded with embarrassment. it was only natural, though. she hadn't even voiced these thoughts of hers to her own self, let alone another person. now more than ever, though, she appreciated aloe's cooperation, and how he didn't seem to judge even when mika waxed all sorts of poetic about her ex-girlfriend. [break][break]

"yeah, you've got a point. that's how life is sometimes, right?" like ships passing in the night, or twin flames that go out at different times, love was ever-fickle, always changing. "the funny thing is, i've run into her a few times. looks like she's back in hoenn for some time." it sounded like an admission, in a way: i still think about her all the time. [break][break]

as for whether mika still loved Julie Solette ... "...i could say that i didn't love her anymore, but i think that would be a lie. maybe." her cheeks were fully flushed red, now, whether due to the wine or her heart's sincerity in a vulnerable moment. regardless, she'd stop drinking, stretch her limbs a bit, and get ready for the tattoo to resume. they said, "it's more like i can't imagine not loving her, even if we're not together. we were good friends, still are, i'd like to think. things are just... different, y'know?" mika looked a bit uncomfortable now, as if she was trying to banish her pure honesty from before. "you'd do the same for me, so it's no big deal." mika nodded. "in any case, this temple sure is strange. i'll have to be more vigilant. and do my best to support you, as well." [break][break]

the two rangers moved to the next location. mika observed their surroundings, following shalin's lead once more as they entered a new chamber. the same sun-shaped symbol from before had appeared, but shalin's espeon used the same dazzling gleam from before, yet the continuous need for light would be impossible for now. mika felt a sting of dejection, yet ultimately agreed with shalin's advice of moving onward from here. they could always come back to it now that they had a map to guide their way. "alright. let's head back and see what else is there." when they returned to the main chamber, mika consulted the map, and figured they ought to head north, the only direction they haven't gone on the first floor yet. the blue-haired ranger remained extra cautious, not wanting to fall into any traps themself — nor wanting to see shalin fall into any more danger than she already had.

he seemed fine to have her at his side, and for that, mika was grateful. the path wound its way into scenery that could be called picturesque, if mika didn't know about the difficulties lying ahead. more likely than not, she hoped she'd find something to do with the missing pokemon, because a leisurely walk wasn't going to cut it. at his reaction towards the mention of missing pokemon, the ranger was equal parts relieved and surprised: relieved that steven hadn't lost any of his pokemon, and surprised that he hadn't heard about these rumors. but all the better, mika thought. it would save her some trouble down the road. "good. whatever is behind the disappearances doesn't seem nice, in any case." they were prepared to protect any and all pokemon and civilians, though, even the witty steven. [break][break]

gym challenge: quick badge

the movements became all too rough on mika's body. she was thankful for the cocoon saddle lessening some of the physicality of it all, but still shut her eyes and grit her teeth for each rough entry of the flight. she heard the cacophonous wings beating and pokemon crying, and was simply thankful that her talonflame had been too focused to disturb her with the noise of its cry, too. [break][break]

by the time she felt like she could properly look ahead again, she saw a light bend, and heard a voice announce loudly over the entire racecourse. they got boost power, and mika searched their brain long and hard for the information that reminded them what exactly that entailed. [break][break]

oh right, they thought. let's use tail wind at least once, here. [break][break]

as the next stretch of the course laid up ahead, mika muttered against the wind, teeth chattering as she struggled to voice anything out to her talonflame. what eventually came out was: "u-use tail wind!" and sora screeched in assent, relaxing on the burning flames in his wings, and instead letting the natural airflow guide him. there were better moves to use at this part, surely, but mika didn't have those abilities at her disposal right now. so she hoped this was the right move, and that she wasn't damning herself or the other competitors on the aerial course. "haha, he's certainly spirited! i don't think evolution will be a problem for a pokemon with that much passion." mika smiled, thinking back to her own pokemon. some of them certainly surprised her with how capable they really were, or how much they could hold their own without mika's intervention. she was grateful, though, because it took some pressure off of her to train them to their fullest. not that she wouldn't, just that it helped when pokemon were a bit independent on their own, too. [break][break]

mika admitted to having a grand time just being in the other woman's company, as well. exploration into the deeper caves was always intriguing on its own, but it was made all the more interesting to have someone else to share the perspective with. and based on the way that marguerite spoke and the way she acted, mika couldn't help but wonder if the other woman was some sort of treasure hunter. [break][break]

as mar caught the offending tinkatuff (in a very impressive display, on top of that), mika asked, "are you some sort of treasure hunter or fighter yourself? you seem like you know what you're talking about." it would make sense, but if not, mika was ready to apologize for being a bit forward. "ah, but as for myself...i'm surprised by how much i'm able to accomplish. i owe it all to my pokemon." her lycanroc huffed proudly, and mika smiled softly. "not a fighter myself, but i've heard rumors of places like that, too. i couldn't imagine it... pokemon can be so much stronger than humans, after all." [break][break]

their attention was drawn by the wild forretress that had appeared, as well. now that's something i could find useful, mika thought to themselves. they nodded at their lycanroc, and the blue wolf shot out with a mouthful of flames, attacking the wild forretress with fire fang and knocking it to the ground. mika tossed a poke ball in a similar fashion, nodding when the capture was successful. when everyone's finished with their snacks, mika proceeds ever forward in the safari zone. the afternoon sun bleeds into evening sky, the makings of sunset orange and purple beginning to show through the sea of blue. the ranger tilts her head heavenward, one hand cast over their eyes to block their vision from the light. "what a beautiful day," they remark. "oh...seems like something's flying towards us." [break][break]

in the distance, she spots it: a large sigilyph descending towards the party. its body shines with a strange tinted quality, and mika thinks it's worth catching. the sigilyph gets caught off guard by her lycanroc striking it from the side, leaving it open to a capture from mika's safari ball. she sweeps up the sigilyph's poke ball, and nods. "alright, i see a nice clearing up ahead. let's rest there before heading back." [break][break]

"i have so much to learn about pokemon and rangerhood still...thank you for helping me realize that." she smiled softly, feeling a bit guilty for not realizing that sooner about ghost-type pokemon. she turned towards the pokemon in question. "it could be possible that there'd been some territorial disputes and they all ended up the stragglers. hmm. hopefully they can be relocated separately without problems or figure out a place where they could stay instead." that could be their job, too, someday. she turned back to oliver and said, "i think that's a sound idea. once we get a better understanding of how the group came to be, we'll be able to help them out to our fullest. good job, oliver. thank you for helping me out in this mission as well." they ushered their pokemon to get ready for bed for the night, whilst checking up on the wild pokemon one last time before packing it in. she nodded. she wasn't one for compliments, either, but a few close people in mika's life taught her the value of positivity, no matter the form it takes. everything was already in place, she simply awaited ever's judgement. [break][break]

"i still think it's nice that you took the initiative in the first place. and we can never be too careful about the kinds of dangers we meet out here." his words were plain as day, yet mika couldn't help but wonder if there was some hidden meaning behind them. if there were, it wasn't her place to probe. [break][break]

as ever stood to his feet, the injured taillow delicately held in his arms, mika nodded and brought along their supplies and pokemon, handling everything as gently (but firmly) as possible. "alright, i'm following right behind you." [break][break]

they slowly made their way towards the pokemon center, quiet in their journey so as not to disturb the taillow. as sure as the sun rises and sets in the sky, mika was sure this taillow would recover, but it would only do so thanks to ever's effort. as they entered the threshold, the blue-haired ranger nodded at the other, a feeling of pride and goodwill swelling within. we did a good thing today, they thought. and that was a fact.

after a bit of frolicking, mika's pokemon all come to a halt near an open expanse in the safari zone. there, she passes out snacks for everyone to whet their appetite with, but notices a safari pokemon up ahead. [break][break]

"baltoy, hmm? that could be useful." she glances at komainu, and the lycanroc nods once before using shadow sneak and scaring the poor pokemon, catching it off its guard so mika can throw a poke ball in its direction. [break][break]

it doesn't fight the capture and they nod to themself, satisfied. "alright, that should be good for now. let's keep going when everyone's finished with their snacks."

"alright, i'll sweep this side and make sure nothing builds up again." she nodded at yuina, then parted from her senior ranger momentarily to work with her own pokemon. prinplup and lycanroc did a sufficient job, and at some point, talonflame returned from his sky patrol. a proud and heavy cry from the firebird told mika that it didn't see any other pokemon or people trapped at the edge of the fire. she breathed a sigh of relief: things were really going well, then! [break][break]

eventually, yuina returned, and her sage advice was a guiding light for mika to follow. "oh, thank you. i'm just glad i could be of help. i'll look for any remaining flames on this side and put them out." she nodded. "you can count on me." [break][break]

as the other ranger rode away on her hisuian arcanine, mika ordered prinplup, lycanroc, and talonflame to stay near her and help smother out any fires. prinplup used water attacks to put them out, while lycanroc's rock attacks smothered the flames, and talonflame blew out any small embers to snuff out the warmth in their coals. [break][break]

what started as a raging fire now was reduced to tiny flames and smoldering embers. though the air was still thick with smoke and ash, mika hoped that the smog would disappear in a few days, leaving the town of littleroot peaceful once more. [break][break]

the safari zone is a nice place. mika respects that there are some parts of the hoenn region that are untouched by conflict, the warden's expansive safari zone being one of them. the moment they step into the threshold, it feels like another world. a place solely reserved for pokemon and their thriving natures, where humans are but passing visitors to the paradise around them. a controlled system where there is a limit to how much violence can be wrought. [break][break]

this makes for the perfect opportunity for mika to take it easy with some of her more peaceful pokemon. her sunflora, usually relegated to managing mika's share of a community garden, joins her for a rare outing. their cherubi, always the mischievous one, now has plenty of space to roam. baby toxel remains in good care, riding on top of mika's mudbray, or sometimes being hefted by mika's rillaboom, the two more responsible pokemon ready to take charge even during a moment of peace. [break][break]

and of course, mika's lycanroc. komainu has been a steadfast partner for the short time she's had him, to the point where it almost feels natural to have him at her side. his purpose is to be the one to strike at desired pokemon, quick but not cruel. just so that the safari balls can make their mark, and mika can leave here with a few more friends at their side. [break][break]

the whole crew is here, and the ranger smiles at the sight of her allies exploring the safari zone, happily moving here and there. as it should be.
