somehow, mika felt like she could relate to aloe's words just then. it was far too easy for her to fall into solitude, choosing herself and nature over other people if given the chance. maybe that was why the ranger life suited her — it was a promise that she wouldn't be alone forever, even if she'd been the one to self-isolate first. it was a guarantee that someone, somewhere, out there, needed her, and not even the sagely mika could pretend to be above that kind of attention and care. [break][break]

she just laughed quietly, taking another swig of her drink while doing so. she wasn't looking to get stone-drunk (though maybe with someone like aloe, the experience would be interesting rather than dreadful), but the alcohol certainly settled some nervousness in her, and made it easier to talk about certain people in a casual capacity. [break][break]

...fuck love, anyway, right? there was more bitter than sweet in aloe's voice, and mika blinked slowly at him, as though trying to see the emotion from the words. as though trying to find the blood behind the scars in his words. instead, she found a strangely compassionate gaze, and her amber irises flitted away, too burned by the shared eye contact. "...it wasn't all bad," she admitted quietly, swirling the wine around in its glass. "but, oh, you're right. i don't think my past relationship can compete with that." there was some borrowed charm and lightheartedness in their words, a doppleganger's affectation from the charismatic tattoo artist before her, a reflection of the friendly goodwill that came between airing out grievances with another person. tit for tat, and all that. [break][break]

"sorry that happened to you, both of you. i don't think things ever got that bad between my ex and i. it was more like... we slowly started drifting apart." mika's voice was rueful, the fire in her eyes smoldering low with the smokes of regret. "it couldn't be helped, though. after our first several months together, she had to go back to her home region. kalos." mika remembered it like it was yesterday (and truth be told, it was difficult for her to accept that it wasn't as recent as her heart made her think it was). "and i was born and raised here. then...well, everything happened. made it hard to stay in contact." it was at this point that mika realized she was too many glasses in, but there was no going back now. [break][break]

trying to lighten the mood, they shrugged their shoulders, and looked out the window as they said, "and i'm the one who broke it off, too. i mean, what else could i have done? everyone who'd been in hoenn at the time didn't know how things would turn out, so..." the words sounded selfish as they left mika's mouth, her shame more bittersweet than the wine going through her. she sighed loudly. "oh, um, and i...i didn't mean to go on for that long..." [break][break]

ah, so the pokemon is a xatu, after all. mika discovers this together with tsubaki, and the rest of the manor is in a whirlwind as they gather the last of the clues. while it seems like the storm might dissipate soon, the mysterious detective declan walsh doesn't let the event end without a little fanfare. [break][break]

his use of the words game and rewards rub mika the wrong way, however. even if this is a distortion, dream, or what have you, that doesn't justify making light of someone's very real death. she doesn't voice her opinions, but her mouth twitches somewhat before returning to its neutral expression. well, just because she doesn't agree with how everything's proceeded thus far, doesn't mean that she has to make a big fuss about it. [break][break]

quite the opposite, actually. at walsh's insistence that everyone come up with their own theory as to what happened, mika wonders if the truth is as simple as it seems. ranger she may be, she's certainly no officer or detective, and this sort of foresight is a little bit beyond her ken. but she supposes that, at the end of the day, there's no harm in a little playful conjecture. [break][break]

(part of her will always doubt herself, however. part of her will never believe in her own abilities, or think she's in the right, and that if she does find herself among the majority for once, then something must be wrong with her, because how could she have put together the same conclusions as these people — far more capable than her — did? maybe she's wrong about this whole thing, to start with, but as always, she will never voice her true feelings aloud. she'll swallow her pride, go with the flow, follow the crowd, and return to their own self at the end of the day, when everything's been said and done. [break][break]

there was a benefit to the rumors being sourced to pokemon, and that was the fact that pokemon, unlike human spirits, could be dealt with. mika was about to spring into action herself, until she felt oliver's strong grip drag her into one of the rooms in the hallway, the giant shadow ball passing in the space they had been occupying before. once the miasma had passed, oliver and mika returned to the hallway, and faced the mischievous pokemon head-on. [break][break]

in oliver's case, he was very literal and hands-on — a fighting type if mika had ever seen one. he held his own against the wild sneasel, who seemed surprised that a human would fight with their own skill rather than rely on pokemon. their fight escalated, and before mika knew it, her fellow ranger was tossed to the ground and the unruly sneasel with him, him straining to tell her to ward off the other two while she still could. [break][break]

"alright. musharna, use psychic on the haunter! and vulpix, attack banette with confuse ray!" on her command, mika's pokemon attacked the wild ones. her musharna wiggled in the air, a powerful psychic aura enveloping the laughing haunter at once, the ghost-type pokemon's grin falling as it realized what was happening. then musharna squeezed the haunter with psychic energy, knocking it out instantly. as for vulpix, she confused the banette, and soon the rag doll pokemon started hitting its own head with its hands, groaning out of bewilderment. [break][break]

feeling bad for the banette, mika told both her musharna and vulpix to hit it with psychic energy. "psychic and extrasensory, now!" and their dual attack would overwhelm the banette, and send the confused pokemon down the end of the hallway, dizzy and exhausted. mika breathed a sigh of relief: finally. [break][break]

"oh, um..." mika laughs quietly, a bit embarrassed now that she's brought the topic of tattoos up. "it's a whole back tattoo, actually. talonflame wings, with realistic shading and fire motifs and everything. i could show you a picture sometime, it ended up not being as nearly as bad as i thought it'd be..." because otherwise no one would be able to see it, unless mika were disrobed, and it'd be a cold day in hell before she started randomly disrobing, even in front of her friends. [break][break]

but they don't get to chat for much longer when an errant noise interrupts their moment of peace. mika nods slowly, affirming that it wasn't just alia who heard that disturbance just now. as the sound gets closer, both rangers and their pokemon hide into the nearby brush, quiet as snowfall. it isn't long until the source of the noise reveals itself, and walks along the path they just took now. [break][break]

two rocket grunts, both with huge packs of supplies, both with strong-looking pokemon. a houndoom and an excadrill, unfriendly as they observe their surroundings, looking for anything out of place. mika's first instinct is to let them pass, but then she has the same worry that alia does: are they headed towards a ranger camp or one of their own? can the two rangers really allow them to leave, knowing that doing so would help the enemy greatly? [break][break]

"they might be going back to their own camp," mika supplies, her voice hushed to a whisper. she wants to say more, but the houndoom notices their hiding spot, and her words die in her throat. as a blackened snout sniffs suspiciously in their direction, mika knows that their hiding spot won't last. so rather than think of a way to maintain their position, she strategizes how to draw the grunts' attention long enough for her and alia to come out of the brush on their own accord. [break][break]

she exchanges a knowing look with her lycanroc, and the wolf pokemon nods once. it slowly saunters towards the side of the foliage, concealing itself from the grunts and their pokemon. then, as soon as the houndoom is about to figure out that there are two rangers hiding in the underbrush, komainu jumps out, and catches the houndoom by surprise, striking it with an accelerock attack. the wolf is so quick that not even the hound nor the mole can realize what is happening before it's too late. and as the grunts' faces fall into frowns of shock, mika nudges alia, hissing out an urgent "now!" before springing out of the brush and onto the path they once were, stanced behind the confused grunts. mika breathes a sigh of relief, happy that noel's whimsicott avoided getting hurt. her fluffy cotton blocks off the bulk of the attack, and lycanroc's support helps redirect the attention. noel's thanks is a welcome sound, and mika simply nods, reverting her attention to the guards but speaking to noel, anyway. "i know you'd do the same for me, so. it's no problem, i'll make sure this golisopod doesn't cause us any trouble." [break][break]

as noel's whimsicott sends out a powerful blast of moon-imbued energy, mika focuses her efforts on the golisopod. the large bug pokemon is still reeling from the wolf's attack earlier, heavy claws pressed against its flesh where under the carapace, it starts to bruise. mika grimaces, and hopes that a few more attacks will hinder the golisopod enough that it won't have any choice except to surrender. [break][break]

"lycanroc, hit them with a stone edge!" at her command, the shiny dusk-lycanroc springs to life, its tough claws leaving heavy score marks in the dirt, its blood-red eyes burning brighter than the sun. then its rocky mane sharpens, sharp edges cutting into the golisopod at full force. in the midst of such a heavy attack, lycanroc leaves itself wide open, and mika doesn't see the krookodile burrowing in the earth before it's too late. [break][break]

but noel is quick-witted, and his whimsicott stalls the krookodile with an expert use of giga drain, such that mika mutters an amazed "thank you," under her breath as a result. if he hadn't been here, she'd be in big trouble! [break][break]

she'll have to pay him back, and in a situation like this, there's only one way to do that. "lycanroc, finish it off with another accelerock!" [break][break]

"not so fast!" the grunt with the golisopod sneers. "golisopod, protect yourself!" the hard scale pokemon chitters, crosses its heavy arms over its chest, and exudes an aura of protection. lycanroc's fast attack rebounds off the force field, and the blue wolf is forced to put distance between itself and the isopod pokemon. [break][break]

meanwhile, the enemy krookodile breathes heavily, but its trainer is just as stubborn. "don't let up! use swagger on that damn cotton puff!" and the krookodile bulks itself up, hoping to look taller than it did before. mika glances at noel, concerned, but also positive he can overcome it. [break][break]

RESURFACED TREASURES: SKY

the conflict between the league and team rocket wages ever on. mika knows it's a bitter push-and-pull battle, but the league must be in dire straits to have asked her to join in on the fight, too. on the bright side, the skies are a familiar place to them, so being asked to patrol the horizons near the ruins feels natural to her. it feels safe. [break][break]

and atop her hydreigon — with her talonflame and corviknight flying nearby, as well — mika swears a small flame of determination burns within her, adrenaline and excitement, both, ramping up a notch. then, in the distance, she spots her: a rocket member soaring through the skies, her ride pokemon a terrible mechanical shadow in the form of hydreigon's twin, metal and cold in the places where even a cutthroat hydreigon would be warm. [break][break]

horror floods her features as a pidgeot and its league-affiliated rider spiral towards the ground, severe injuries or even death awaiting them as they plummet below. mika might be too late, but she can't help it: a sympathetic order is given to her corviknight, in the form of a whispered "help them if you can. come back if there's nothing to be done." and the raven pokemon descends, while mika maneuvers her hydreigon to meet the rocket member in mid-air — flanked by her talonflame, all the while. [break][break]

she says, "i can't let you keep doing that, and you just don't seem like the type of person who will be convinced with words alone." she nods at her talonflame, her and the fiery bird splitting paths, hydreigon below her rumbling with anticipation for a fight. "so let's do what trainers do best — and fight." wordlessly, she gives a signal to her hydreigon, and the three-headed dragon opens all its mouths for a tri attack against its paradoxical counterpart. [break][break]

gym challenge: quick badge

it was hard to focus on anything except the course in front of her. she imagined the many times that josh had flown this course, or how many times his gym trainers had flown it, too. it'd be easy for them — it'd be natural. mika had a lot of distance and experience to cover, and she knew it was more than her talonflame's fiery nature could make up for. [break][break]

these thoughts occupied her mind so readily, she almost forgot to spur talonflame into action, a couple of seconds late on the GO signal. her talonflame screeched loudly as it ascended, blades of grass and patches of dirt forgotten as the winds filled it wings and gave it height. [break][break]
up ahead, the first obstacle presented itself: a giant translucent tube that welcomed the eager racers into its wide berth. mika said nothing, staying quiet as she grit her teeth, and let sora guide them through this first obstacle unimpeded — the talonflame all too eager to make up for the lost time at the beginning. [break][break]

it feels silly to search for answers in a dream, especially when mika had resolved to themself that they'd start living their real life, and not worry about what-ifs or what-could-have-beens. but there is a natural curiosity within her that hasn't been satiated yet, one that searches for more and more discoveries and validation with each passing moment. if there is a chance to find out the why and how, no matter how trivial, then one should take it. [break]

and this is her reasoning as she selects no on the screen, her world drowning in darkness and pixels and sound. when next she awakes, she sees the results of her choice, a dream that continues long after the night has ended — answers that lie beneath the surface, untouched and unscratched. [break]

"alright." mika nodded, agreeing that it was a sound plan. that was the good thing about being a ranger, she supposed. you were never alone in your endeavors. "i'll do my best." [break][break]

in all honesty, they weren't even confident in their own abilities yet, thinking that this would be something that ranger wrynn could handle with his eyes closed. but the fact that he trusted her enough to subdue the torkoal meant a lot to her, and forced her to take the responsibility head-on instead of simply sticking to the sidelines. "here goes." [break][break]

she brought out two pokemon from their poke balls: prinplup and walrein. water and ice were common deterrents for fire, and mika simply hoped that with rowan's help, they'd do more than enough to discourage these torkoal. "brine and surf combo!" [break][break]

the two water-types obeyed their trainer, and at once, deluges of water formed in the ashen air. prinplup's brine formed as a deluge of water that formed in front of its beak, swirling at the torkoal. the idea wasn't to hurt them too badly, but to weaken them and allow them to be handled easier. and the walrein's surf was instrumental in neutralizing the now-boiling water, as well as any other small sparks in the grass that would otherwise catch into flames. mika was so focused on what was in front of them, however, that she failed to notice a pair of torkoals off to the side, ready to aim flamethrower attacks in retaliation... [break][break]

komainu the lycanroc softens somewhat at alia's compliment. mika does her best not to notice, but she can't help smiling at the unexpectedly sweet display. and if her lycanroc starts walking a little closer to alia, sensing true goodness from her, that's just as well. "is that so? i've actually been on a few missions before, but not a lot. still, i never thought we'd be working against team rocket so soon." she glances between alia and komainu, nodding at some new thought brewing in her head. "maybe it's like you said, the league is in dire straits. i'm surprised too, but i think we'll be good." [break][break]

alia's riolu seems just as sensitive to their surroundings as mika's lycanroc is. the canine pokemon certainly have enhanced senses that humans could only hope to have one day, and mika counts herself lucky that their partners are so reliable. and while it would benefit them more to stay focused on the job, mika doesn't mind a little small talk here and there. [break][break]

(actually, that's a lie—she used to hate small talk, but since making such nice friends like alia, has found small sparks of joy in the act of socialization. slowly but surely.) [break][break]

mika says, "i've been busy. not only with work, but just life in general. though i guess that's the same for all of us." she smiles faintly. "i've caught a lot of pokemon. can never be too careful, after all." is that still work-related, though? maybe mika should mention something from their personal life, too. "um...i also have a tattoo now. that's something different since last time you saw me, for sure. what about you?" [break][break]

RESURFACED TREASURES: SUPPLY

mika analyzes the pokemon accompanying the rocket grunts. a formidable krookodile, and a tough golisopod. she could probably take on the golisopod with her lycanroc, and maybe noel's whimsicott can take on the krookodile. her strategy doesn't go much further than that, though, on account of noel springing into action. mika is quick to follow suit, however, and summons her shiny dusk-lycanroc out to the field. [break][break]

the fairy wind knocks the supplies out of the grunts' hands, scattering parcels like petals in the wind. the opposing krookodile and golisopod stance up, snarls escaping their mouths as a new threat appears before them. thankfully, they seem less confident as soon as mika and her lycanroc emerge from the bushes, too, standing beside noel and whimsicott, resolute. "just leave these things and go," mika says. "there's no need for things to escalate." [break][break]

unfortunately, despite the two's best intentions, their words fall on deaf ears. "ha! as if!" one of the grunts snarls, standing back up to his feet after being startled by the fairy wind from earlier. "you'll regret sneaking up on us like that!" [break][break]

without warning, the foe's golisopod shoots forward, a quick-and-heavy hit in the form of a first impression, claws raking against whimsicott. at the same time, krookodile digs its claws into the dirt path, and scatters the sand to create a sand storm, rough winds and whirling dust rising all around them. [break][break]

mika grimaces, and glances at noel. "i've got your back!" her lycanroc growls, ready to fight, and mika cries out, "lycanroc! use accelerock on the golisopod!" the wolf pokemon is unaffected by the sandstorm, running through the space without difficulty. it dashes towards the golisopod, and scrapes by its body with its claws, upsetting the bug-pokemon's balance and catching it off guard — all so it can provide support to noel's whimsicott, and take a little of the pressure off the smaller grass-fairy pokemon. [break][break]
