Halfway up the wall and with no fossils to show for her effort, Michiko began to wonder if she was doing something wrong. Maybe she did not understand what a fossil looked like? She imagined the ones she'd seen at the Slateport Oceanic Museum when she'd gone on trips with her daughters-- huge, pale white skeletons of Armaldo and plaster replicas of underwater Cradily.

The chances of finding something like that just sticking out of the cave wall seemed slim, however, so Michi pulled herself and Baja up onto a rock ledge to regroup. For his part, the Linoone had been sniffing along the sheer rock face in search of items he could Pickup, but had found nothing of value except a Hard Stone. Trotting right up to her, Baja stood up on his hind legs to offer her the rock, ears pricked.

Michi schooled her expression to hide her disappointment. "Hmm. Maybe looking inside is more important," she said. Now that they had vantage, perhaps they could get to work. "Doree, please look inside for fossils!"

The tiny dragon zipped forward into the stone, the tip of her ghostlike tail disappearing as she phased through the rock. Michi waited a minute nervously before she heard a chirp from up above. Straining her eyes, she saw the tiny dragon's head poking out from a place in the wall several meters to the right. "Oh! Did you find?" she cried.

Hitching Baja to herself again, she carefully made her way over to the rock face. "Linoone, please use Digging," she said, hoisting the badger up so he had clear access to the vein of rock. The band of sandstone Doree was inside looked soft-- Linoone's claws would surely be able to pierce it!

Pebbles flew, clattering down rock ledges below as the black-and-white Pokemon burrowed into the rock. Michi was impressed by her husband's forethought-- whatever she thought of Linoone personally, it was exceptionally good at burrowing. Within moments, the dark-type had caved out a small burrow and returned, his nose stained brown with clay and rock dust.

More importantly, he held something in his mouth.

Gavin takes one look at the diving pool and turns away. He might've feared drowning less since becoming Lugia's avatar, but that didn't mean he'd be jumping into water every chance he got.

To the pit, they went.

Aerodactyl negates the need for rope, accepting Gavin onto her back without much fuss. Cradily is snared within her talons, the suction cups on the bottom of the fossil-plant's 'feet' anchoring it to the ground as soon as it's set down again. It doesn't seem to like flying, much, and Gavin can't blame it. Cradily weren't meant to be in the air.

As he points the provided flashlight around the dark pit to survey it, he addresses the Aerodactyl who now perched on the ground. "Can you feel anything with your SUPERSONIC?"

He covers his ears to avoid the shrill sound, then approaches the wall Aerodactyl indicates with a swipe of her tail.

Retrieving the fossil piece from her Linoone was like getting an old, drooly tennis ball back from a golden retriever with a foot-long tongue. Michi steeled herself and did so with perfect composure, giving no indication of her internal screaming.

"Very good!" she said instead. Baja's tongue lolled as he grinned at her.

Michi spent a few minutes cleaning off the fossil with one of the cloth handkerchiefs she always carried. This one had Hello Skitty on it, and as she cleaned away the extra dirt and Linoone slobber, she uncovered a beautiful pattern in the stone.

Putting the fossil in a Tupperware so it wouldn't get damaged in her bag, Michi began to recognize a pattern on the cave walls. It was difficult to tell in the beam of her headlamp, but the walls were actually banded with lines of sandstone. Her husband had pointed out rock striations like this during trips to Ponii Canyon in Alola-- he'd told her the sediment was deposited over different ages, and the history of a place could be seen based on the color of the rock. It was something had had to bear in mind while excavating human artifacts, and Michi remembered it now.

"Baja, please sharpen your claws on this," Michi said, putting the Hard Stone he'd found with his Pickup before down in front of the pink-eyed Pokemon. The whetstone grind of HONE CLAWS began, echoing and resonating unpleasantly off the cave walls. "Please check at this level for more fossils of this kind..." Perhaps if they went up or down they'd find more fossils total, but if Michi wanted a complete one, they'd need to search rock from the same era.

Doree zipped around her head. Michi was grateful to see the little dragon Pokemon. "Doree, please watch for other Pokemon!" she said. If she was right about there being more fossils in the sandstone, she had a feeling they wouldn't be alone for long!

Chu-e gets a slow start. These challenges are not very friendly for someone who can not physically do a lot of them. In the end, it's only due to Grapefruit that he's able to really do much of the climbing wall. Seeing as he can't really pull himself up, even with the equipment, his Carbink being able to float and slap down pieces of rock are good. His Sylveon is able to use his weird flesh ribbons to hold onto a net, with Chu-e on the other side, so the fossils knocked down have a soft landing and don't break.

"Oh! This one looks okay!" Kind of. Gently putting the net down, he leans down to start to sift through the various rocks. To his surprise, he finds a nice piece of fossil, which he hands off to Polka Dots since he knows the Sylveon will have an easier time carrying it. One out of three pieces down.

  •   You did your best! The fossil underneath your lovely elephant takes a small amount of damage, just a small chip. But thanks to the fluff and water it seems rather safe now!
  •  as you gather your 2nd piece a small bit of rumbling starts behind the wall, wiggling your ropes and the cargo in your arms.

DREEPY is causing disruptions inside the wall! Roll to save your fossils but both your actions and your rolls will be considered for the next part! roll above an 85 and both of your fossils could come out unscathed! roll 45-84 and one of your fossils could be damaged! roll below those and both of your fossils could be damaged! if you roll a 1-5 one of your fossils could be destroyed, oh no

Baja's newly-sharpened claws made quick work of the soft sandstone and the badger carved ribbons through the cave walls, snagging a second piece of patterned rock. To the Linoone's sensitive nose, the smell of the fossil was unmistakable-- the organic material preserved in ancient bone had an almost sulphur-like aroma.

But then a strange tremor occurred in the rock.

Michi's pitons began to tremble, upset by some ghostly forces inside the cave walls. A loose piece fell from above, bouncing off Michi's helmet with a sharp crack. She was so stunned she couldn't even make a sound. Only her experience spelunking stopped her from letting go of the rope in surprise. Any sharp movements might damage the Tupperware-enclosed fossil in her bag.

Instead, she just looked up.

The rocks above were fluttering, unstable, drawn by an ancient heartbeat.

"Doree! Catch the rocks!" she cried as a shower of loose pebbles broke free from above them. Her Dreepy zipped up towards the cloud of tiny stones, loosing her own secret weapon-- Infestation. A swarm of tiny Dreepy allies, no bigger than bumblebees, materialized around the little dragon and shot forwards to intercept the rockfall. They peppered the rocks, squeaking as they caught the miniscule pebbles and propelled them away from either side of Michi. She still had to cover her face to protect it from the dust and smaller particles, but she managed to keep her hold on the rope, doing her best to keep herself steady between two equally-spaced pitons.

Inside the burrow, Baja was just returning at the entrance with his newly-found fossil and ran straight into the other Dreepy. He had a brief, disorienting moment where he realized it wasn't his own ally and immediately planted his back feet, claws digging into the stone.

Lowering his head like a battering ram, wrapping his tongue around his fossil, he barreled towards the little ghost with seventy pounds of black-and-white muscle.

As he did, he used Switcheroo.

The Hard Stone he'd left safely on the ledge outside disappeared in a flash as he snagged it with his long tongue and replaced it with the fossil, almost too quickly for the eye to see. Hard Stone now in his jaws, adding to his momentum, Baja used Fling to try and hurl the rock directly through his enemy, hopefully dissuading the other Dreepy from causing another disruption!

At the sight of the furious monkey Tirtouga turned sharply, swimming back away into the gloomy waters. Greg was still spoiling for a fight, and he paddled after the retreating Tirtouga for a few seconds before giving up. The turtle was gone.
The trio surfaced, second fossil fully excavated and barely chipped from Lulu's protection. Zac slapped the side of the mammoth. "Great work girl! You got it out bloody perfectly! And what would I do without you Greg?" Zac asked, scratching the monkey's head just behind its topknot. "You scared off that troublesome Tirtouga in no time flat!" Greg flashed his teeth, lacking any enemies, chewed on his stick instead.
Zac compared the three pieces. This one's a tail, and the spine seems to fit pretty well with this bit, so it must be a torso. Just the head remaining! "Okay guys, keep your eyes peeled for that third piece. We want a head."
After a few minutes of looking, the problem became clear. The water was too murky. "We're not going to find anything from up here," Zac said, chewing his lip in thought. "Okay. Time for our wide area search." Greg screeched with excitement, slapping the water, Lulu and Zac in turn with his stick. Greg LOVED the wide area search.
The trio dove, heading for the sandy floor again. Lulu landed with slow, thudding footfalls, and Greg kicked off. He grabbed onto a ridge of stone at the edge of their old excavation site, his goggles fogging up with excitement.     Before Zac could give the signal, the little monkey jammed his stick into the sand. The rock shuddered and shivered, as Greg's Grassy Surge forced foliage to spring from the sand. Seaweed unfurled like upside down banners. Coral cut upwards in little castles of reds, purples and greens, and seagrass swarmed the pool floor. Beds of the lush greenery waved slowly, and Greg snapped off a piece of red coral to chew on. Zac gave the monkey a thumbs up as it paddled back to Lulu's head, prize in its mouth.
Now it was Lulu's turn. With the ground so disturbed and tangled with foliage, her attacks would be significantly weaker. An earthquake, which would normally shatter anything nearby, would now only disrupt the ground enough to reveal nearby fossils. That was the plan anyway. They'd tested the combination when looking for tubers in the forest, but Zac hadn't thought about practicing underwater.
Lulu reared up and brought her front legs down in a slow-motion stamp. She hit the ground with dampened force, crushing coral and squashing seaweed under her massive feet.     Zac felt the ocean shudder around them, and the floor buckled. The floor split into uneven chunks, plates rising or dipping to reveal the intriguing innards of the world beneath their feet. Mineral veins, buried shells, promising pale lumps, and even a Binacle were revealed. The Pokemon gasped at them with both hand-mouths before pulling itself away into the coral forest.
Zac patted Lulu and pointed towards one of the pale lumps. It was time to find that third piece.

he takes his equipment with him, carefully securing the rope on a harness on his hip, as he takes one last glance at the pokemon he brought with him. he realizes that he might have brought the wrong arcanine and the wrong lycanroc for the job, not because of their movesets, but because of their personalities.

"can you guys take it down a notch for today," he tells his pokemon as he places batteries on the flashlight provided to him. "like, scale everything down to half the usual."

playful barks answered the trainer, which was then responded with a sigh.

anchoring a rope from a sturdy foundation, kyle descends the pits, with both of his pokemon managing to scale down the steep slope on their own.

the arcanine makes his own small ridges to get stable footing on with weak bulldozes while his lycanroc manages to follow the path the arcanine made, jumping from one ledge to another.

while they rush down, kyle takes his trip down slowly. on one of such indents on the wall that his arcanine has made, kyle notices something sticking out the wall with the flashlight he has. he whistles, calling back both of them. "just camus," he clarifies, which then puts the fire-type on standby.

the lycanroc manages to scale up with ease with encasing his claws with rocks, scrambling up with accelerock. when he sees what kyle had seen, he perks his ears up following the next instruction from his trainer. "try to get this out with drill run." the lycanroc was ready to go full power before kyle stops him. "tone it down to like ten percent."

the rock-type, not knowing the concept of numbers, just assumes it to be a super weakened version of its move. the drill run was weak, but it's going to be delicate enough to take out a fossil from a wall.

while climbing walls was something that seemed fun breaking them down was even more fun. tyramigo proved this to be true as the large tyranasaurus broke apart wall after wall with his large body, biting down onto chunks of rock as a snack to keep his energy up and full. kaz meanwhile was sitting on his head, adjusting the helmet to his head every time a stone decided to fall on top of it from above as his large partner decided to break apart things. while it did clear away large parts hiding gems and other goodies they were finding kaz was a little worried that the dude might swallow up the fossils that they would need.

speak of the giritina as his dinosaur took a bite out of a wall he noticed somelthing, something almost white like bone sticking out of where tyramigo bit off. then the dino moved in to chomp down on the same spot. "WHOA WHOA WHOA STOP STOP STOOOOOOP" he reached forward and dug his hands into the t-rex's nostrils and pulled back on them hard making the large beast roar in annoyance with his trainer but still stopped him from biting into their treasure as he let go and slide down his pokemon's face with pick in hand and jumped over to the fossil.

"geez watch what ya eat man, looks like we almost lost what we were looking for!" with that he went about trying to break the fossil free from its clutches...only to be smushed against the wall by tyramigo pressing his snout against kazimir's back.

he takes the piece of fossil slowly from the wall as his lycanroc slowly chips away from the wall, identifying it as a torso of some prehistoric pokemon. he places it in a cushioned container before looking back down where his arcanine was waiting.

"we're heading down. light up the place."

a morning sun from the fire-type makes the flashlight on his hand obsolete as the arcanine floods the bottom of the pits with light. his pokemon's fur glows with the brightness of a lamp, allowing kyle to safely watch where he was going as he rappels down.

as soon as he reaches the bottom, he detaches the safety rope and quickly calls both of his pokemon with him. he opens the container with the fossil and lets both of them take a look at it.

"something like this," he instructs them. noses start to inspect it, though kyle is unsure if it'll still have any semblance of a scent to trace with. "let me know if you find something."

both of them bark and starts running around the place. kyle takes his own trip, inspecting the same wall he came down from. there's bound to be more near the first one, right?

"fine you big baby. stay right there, we'll be back in a flash." kaz said to his tyrantrum who sat on the sidelines of the pool as he and his minior dived into the depths. despite its weakness to water the floating meteor was fine with being used as a balloon for kazimir as they swam further into the water. while the water shimmered on the surface under it it glistened white all kinds of rocks dotted with crystal flecks. some of it was blinding and almost made kazimir miss the strange rock that sat at the bottom with pieces of bone sticking out of it. pointing down at it the minior released a wave of psychic energy to pick up the rock and float it up towards kazimir who turned the rock around in his hands. sure enough it looked like a fossil but he couldn't be sure. so grabbing onto his little meteor partner it started to rise to the surface with kazimir in tow as he gripped onto the rock tightly hoping it was what they were looking for.

Okay, now that the introductions were done—whoops, everyone had already gone on ahead and started searching for what they had to search.

He wondered if they were going to be bringing the fossil home? But that was a far shot.

Anyway

Taking his pick of the three locations that were offered to everyone, he wondered if there was anyone who was going to wade through the water and search through there.

Maybe not? Then again, I can start there… he thought to himself as he went over and found himself some diving gear.

Now he wondered how the—well, then!

“Come on, you two—” he said to the Dracozolt and the Runerigus as he dove into the murky depths. Would he be able to find anything under here?

Everyone moves and it's a bit disorienting, but the researcher is determined not to be left behind, if he was to compete then he was to give it his best. His mother had been a gym leader for too long for Miles to even dream of disrespecting the challenge regardless of how he felt about it. He's familiar with the gear, but he's not dressed to dive nor does he feel like changing and so he moves to the walls sure to grab a hard hat and the other appropriate gear. He makes his way to the ledges careful as to avoid in his own expedition. Eyes move to Mare, "We're following your lead." The Kabuto begins to scurry across the walls the fossil pokemon seeking out its own beady red eyes scanning manufactured bluff before settling in a spot.

It's a bit precarious one arm is used to hold onto the stone wall maintaining balance, while the second is with the pick ever so lightly tapping the stone slowly eventually prying out what is a piece of fossil. Archeology was a careful study and to rush was to fail. "Not bad at all Mare." He thanks the Kabuto all the while Obelos stands on the ledge overlooking making sure nothing attempts to interfere with the two and their first fossil retrieval

After successfully uncovering what looked to be the middle fragment of an incomplete fossil, Gavin elects to abandon the pit they'd climbed into. Working off the (incorrect) assumption that there would be a different piece to the puzzle in each 'zone', he hitches a ride on his Aerodactyl back to the top.

He could save the worst for last, but decides to suck it up and get the diving over with.

"All right, Cradily, let's put your STORM DRAIN to work."

It can't well suck up the entire pool with its ability, but the fossilized sea plant sinks to the bottom and causes water to swirl around its suction-cupped form. A whirlpool disturbs the layer of sediment at the bottom, potentially uncovering treasure within.

It bears the unfortunate side-effect of making Gavin wait until the murky water clears, but he's patient enough.

Okay, so he’d managed to find one piece of a fossil so far—

However, knowing that having an early lucky streak was going to regally kick him in the ass later.

So of course, Lars lowered his expectations. Lowered them to the point that he wasn’t going to expect to find anything at all in the next area he was searching.

Never mind if they had to dive a little deeper than the last place where they’d found the first piece. Turning to his Runerigus, he gives the hand signals to be on the lookout for anything approaching—because he’s pretty certain that his Dracozolt, airbrained asshat that it is, isn’t going to listen to him.

Case in point:

The weird-looking dinosaur…thing was poking at a rock not too far from where he’d decided to continue his search!

Oy vey.
