THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

Once again, Zev found himself beneath the alien sky of the realm beyond the rift that many were starting to call the Border. In the distance, islands of rock floated just above the horizon, while spirits streamed through the sky like birds in flight. The strange sun of that plane, much larger than the regular one in Hoenn's sky, was setting, causing the firmament to darken with an oncoming night.[break][break]

And the jubokko tree reached toward it, dark branches and bloodstained leaves raking upwards like gnarled claws.[break][break]

Zev turned back to his companions, the same three women who had accompanied him during his last foray into the Border: Lulu Flint, Elisabeth Fiorelli, and Naomi Sato. They had agreed to return together to establish a base camp on the hill nearby and investigate the tree over a longer period of time.[break][break]

At the moment, Zev was engaged in the former activity, setting up the tents in a semicircle. His Ceruledge stood watch over the campsite, keeping an eye out for any encroaching specters. Surprisingly, there were none.[break][break]

But who knew what might happen once darkness fell upon the alien land.

light from kadabra’s markings glowed over the texture and bevels of the odd seal. why here? what lied within, and did they dare try to find out?[break][break]

Building campsites was not Elisabeth's forte. She had lent herself to the building more through her Pokémon than through her own efforts, her Tsareena wielding vines to lift materials to assist Zev Harcourt with ease.[break][break]

Elisabeth, instead, once more found herself before the jubokko tree that had occupied them prior. She knelt down and listened as Lulu Flint spoke of blood sacrifices, her own expression clouding as she examined its curious, arcane symbology. Her lips pursed, considering the notion.[break][break]

"If it wants blood," she said finally, drawing a knife out of her pocket, "we could certainly comply."[break][break]

Caution prevented her first from taking action, though if she were to be honest, it was more the gaze of the nearby scientist that stayed her hand from completing its thought. Were Elisabeth alone, she would assuredly have made a shallow cut in her arm to slake the tree's thirst for blood.[break][break]

Already, she had been reckless with infinity energy, Nihilego toxins, and her own strategy and methodology of battle against the spirit of Moltres. It left her self-conscious.[break][break]

In this moment of artificial composure, a peculiar scent wafted towards her, and Elisabeth's eyes narrowed as she caught a glint of something leafy peeking behind the seal. It was sharply pungent, herbal, and bitter. This time, she indulged in her curiosity, pushing it aside to get a proper looking at the yellow and withering plantlife.[break][break]

A sudden wave of the sickly, bitter aroma stirred a nausea in the deepest pit of her stomach, and she scowled. "This foul odor is new," she remarked drily. It clung to her skin and clothing with a strange resentment, like cigarette smoke.

The Border was indeed as hauntingly beautiful as it had been during their first expedition, but this time, Nomi only had eyes for the tree.[break][break]
As her busybody Maushold, Legion, scurried about assisting Zev Harcourt and the other Pokémon with the construction of their makeshift camp, Nomi crouched down at the base of the Jubokko beside Elisabeth Fiorelli. A distinct sense of déjà-vu washed over the young scientist as she found herself gazing into the admin's intense emerald eyes, the two of them once again the closest to the tree. It was not lost on Nomi that Elisabeth had nearly cut her own flesh in sacrifice, a bold if foolish consideration. Though it remained inert since their fight with the spectral Moltres, there was no telling what would happen if they "watered" the Jubokko. A part of Nomi desired to run such an experiment - see what would happen - but a much larger part knew that there were more important things to study at the moment.[break][break]
Such as the seal.[break][break]
She, too, could smell the repulsive odor - the scent of decay, rotting flesh, bitter malice. She scrunched up her nose in disgust, but leaned in as Elisabeth had, taking in the sight of the withered green and yellow leaves, their once vibrant colors muted and lifeless. Something had flattened them, it seemed...as if crawling or slithering over them. And yet, there were no signs of movement - animated or re-animated - behind the seal.[break][break]
"Perhaps something comes and goes from here...a portal?" Nomi murmured thoughtfully, stringing ideas together.[break][break]
All of a sudden, a cold sweat broke out on the back of Nomi's neck. Her skin tingled and her heartrate quickened. "Something is watching us," she hissed at Elisabeth, a wave of intense paranoia surging through her. Her crimson eyes widened and she whirled around, trying to find the danger.

Whatever the three women were observing, Zev could not see it from where he stood, peering over the campsite with the satisfaction of a man who had completed his job well. He glanced over his shoulder at the rest of his team clustered by the roots of the jukkobo tree, then squinted at the horizon as the last of the sun's rays dared to slip out of sight.[break][break]

"Ceruledge, get a fire going for us," Zev instructed his Pokémon.[break][break]

The Ghost-type gave a silent nod before striking a pile of kindling with BITTER BLADE. Flames burst to life, illuminating the immediate area: the tents and the other equipment the team had brought with them.[break][break]

Somehow, the interplay of firelight and shadows only made the wild lands of the Border feel more ominous and terrible. Zev frowned at the unfamiliar sensation that crawled up his spine. He scanned the darkness beyond the circle of tents, tense with anticipation, yet nothing came.[break][break]

Shaking his head, Zev threw a couple of small logs onto the fire, the wood obtained from dead, fallen branches of the jukkobo. Then he opened a cooler of food they had brought, the raw, pre-seasoned meat and vegetables wrapped in tin foil for easy cooking on hot coals. If they were going to spend the night, they weren't going to do it on an empty stomach.[break][break]

"Dinner will be ready in a few minutes," Zev called out, not caring if the women and their Pokémon heeded his announcement or not.

her nose wrinkled at the smell. the bitterness pervasive, reaching further than just the surface of their skin and clothes. it seemed to hang heavily on her spirit, even.[break][break]

she didn’t catch the way Naomi Sato hissed at Elisabeth Fiorelli about whatever threat. and unlike the latter, this time, lulu took the risk.[break][break]

”i’ll give it some blood, then.” not hers, though. a reach into her pocket was followed by the release of a cubchoo. what might have seemed like a strange pokemon for lulu to have on her person was actually one she carried around about half of the time, for special avatar reasons.[break][break]

a switchblade was drawn, then, and she held the small bear close to the tree, running the blade over its paw as it protested, and squeezing blood onto the ground at the base of the bitter leaves. perhaps predictably, the ground slurped it right up mmm so there was not a trace left on the soil.[break][break]

”that’s exactly what happened inside the tree of life.”[break][break]

she watched for a long moment. when nothing more happened, and Zev Harcourt called about dinner, she waved back and looked over at the other two close by. it was then that the she noticed the utter fear in Naomi Sato ’s eyes. not again.[break][break]

”sato, are you alright?”

Naomi Sato's paranoia hissed into Elisabeth's mind like a warning bell, and her green eyes blinked slowly as she turned to look behind them.[break][break]

Only the flickering embers of the fire that Zev Harcourt stoked into being were visible, aside from the shadows of the tents prepared for the evening. They encroached on the small band of travelers like grasping, shadowy fingers, but it failed to invoke the same ominous sensation in the botanist as it had in the Rocket Beast.[break][break]

"Trees are alive, too," Elisabeth softly reminded the pink-haired scientist beside her. "Just because they cannot see us in the traditional sense, does not mean they don't know we are here."[break][break]

A strange, profound sorrow gripped her for a moment as she turned to look once more at the jubokko tree, a sudden wind whipping its sanguine leaves into a frenzy. How long had it lived, she wondered? How many others had it outlived?[break][break]

The ghosts that had lingered here in their last visit had all seemed so miserable, so furious, so broken. Was that all that came after death, in the end?[break][break]

Was death just the promise of yet another stretch of unending, infinite emptiness? Living had already disappointed her, in that way.[break][break]

Elisabeth's head hung low as she rose to her feet once more, deaf to Lulu Flint's concern for Sato's well-being. A hand rested against the tree's trunk for support, and the briefest brush of those brittle leaves against her hand caused her to shudder with a spike of disdain for her own self-pity.[break][break]

An attempt to shake her head of its morose thoughts came, and she looked up -- only to see an imposing shadow rising behind Zev Harcourt, towering and terrifying in its vastness.[break][break]

"Look out--!" she cried to him, and that's when the fire's flames vanished into darkness.

The strange and intense onset of paranoia faded as quickly as it had come, and Nomi blinked up at Lulu Flint's concerned face with a sluggish confusion, as if waking from a dream.[break][break]
Before she could try and explain what had happened, however, Elisabeth Fiorelli cried out, her warning shrill and urgent. Nomi rushed to her feet, turning to face the camp, momentarily forgetting about the Jubokko, the blood sacrifice, the foul odor, and the unexpected paranoia. What she saw made her crimson eyes widen - more out of astonishment than fear.[break][break]
Amidst the shadows, a Gorluk bigger than any Nomi had ever seen before loomed over Zev Harcourt, dwarfing the normally tall and intimidating Rocket Beast. On its back was a bloody spiked shield that filled Nomi with a sense of dread, for she could see that some of the blood was fresh, dripping onto the ground in the same manner the blood of Lulu's Cubchoo had as part of her offering to the tree. The symbols on the Gorluk's body flared a bright, sickly yellow as it bellowed with rage, reaching towards Zev, momentarily illuminating the scene and bringing the danger into sharp relief.[break][break]
"Legion!" Nomi yelled for the family of rodents. They scampered over to the assassin and - holding tiny hands and focusing as a unit - swiftly put up a PROTECT around him and his Ceruledge.

The startled shouts from the women triggered Zev's survival instinct. Without thinking, he leaped to the side, rolling to avoid a massive hand slamming down onto the shimmering, PROTECTive shield. When he looked up, his Ceruledge had lunged, running up the Golurk's outstretched arm to deliver a searing SOLAR BLADE to the right side of its head.[break][break]

The spectral automaton roared, a ghastly, hollow sound. It thrashed its arms wildly, aiming a SHADOW PUNCH at the pesky Ceruledge that flitted around it like a wasp. The blow connected, sending the Fire Blades Pokémon flying.[break][break]

Straight at the jukkobo tree and its broken seal.[break][break]

"Scatter!" Zev yelled at the women, who stood directly in the path of collision. Scrambling to his feet, he pulled another Pokéball off his belt, ready to release its contents in case Ceruledge did not get up from his crash.

a sharp turn on her heel, and there it was, looming over their escort. it was truly a monster fitting of somewhere as grim as the border.[break][break]

lulu passed a quick look to her kadabra, and reached out to place a hand on both Elisabeth Fiorelli and Naomi Sato . the three then teleported to a safe distance away—though not abandoning Zev Harcourt. they could put up a fight, too, if need be, from where they were standing. for now, lulu chose to let him deal with it.[break][break]

Lulu Flint's Kadabra swept her, Naomi Sato, and Elisabeth to safety just before they could be hit by Zev Harcourt's flying Ceruledge.[break][break]

Instead, the tree shuddered with the impact, leaves drifting down with the inertia. A ripple of discontent spread out from where the tree had been struck, and the wailing of haunted souls echoed anew all around them.[break][break]

Elisabeth's eyes narrowed as she reached for a Pokeball of her own to assist.[break][break]

"Irritating," she commented darkly in regards to Lulu Flint's observation regarding the Golurk's height. "Narcissa, banish this filthy creature from our sight."[break][break]

The newly emerged Tsareena complied with a POWER WHIP, cracking the vines with a snap towards the enormous silhouette looming in the darkness. Its lashing radius sent the specters surrounding it scattering away, giving an opening to strike the Golurk more directly, should the others wish to take it.

"It seems to be some kind of executioner," Nomi observed, continuing the conversation with Lulu Flint even as Elisabeth Fiorelli's Tsareena entered the fray. In fact, as she said this, the Golurk snarled at a few spirits that had somehow managed to avoid the POWER WHIP, impaling them on its bloody shield even as it continued to lumber towards Zev Harcourt. "It goes after the other ghosts as readily as it does us. Perhaps we made the unfortunate mistake of building our camp in the middle of its usual hunting grounds."[break][break]
The young scientist tapped a finger to her chin in thought. How fascinating - a ghost destroying other ghosts? Was there some underlying purpose to it, or was it just the reckless behavior of a Pokémon that was violent in life (so therefore, violent in death)?[break][break]
Meanwhile, Legion scurried just out of the way of the Golurk's massive foot, then summoned their own tangle of vines out of the ground with a determined cacophony of squeaks. The TRAILBLAZE rushed forward, hitting the Golurk with more force than would be expected from such a tiny collection of rodents thanks to Legion's Technician ability. Granted a burst of speed by the grass attack, Legion zoomed away towards Nomi, clearing space for their larger companions to finish the job.[break][break]
Nomi couldn't help but feel intrigued by what would happen if they successfully banished the Golurk - would it dissipate like the smaller, less corporeal spirits, or would it fall prone, fainting like the living Pokémon assaulting it might...? She waited with eager curiosity.

Ceruledge did not get up from where he lay among the roots of the jukkobo tree. Making a vexed noise, Zev recalled him into a Pokéball before throwing the other one he'd already unclipped from his belt. Shadows burst out of the vessel, coalescing into the grinning, red-eyed form of his Gengar.[break][break]

Zev touched the keystone on his wristwatch. "End this now, Smoke!" he ordered, voice rough, like stone grinding on stone.[break][break]

Brilliant light engulfed the Gengar and expanded, growing as enormous as the malevolent Golurk. When it dissipated, Smoke was huge, engulfing most of the campsite with a giant, gaping maw. Spectral wails filled the air — from the spirits fleeing the battlefield and from deep within the Gengar's throat.[break][break]

The Golurk stomped forward to engage Smoke, but the mega evolved Gengar attacked first. All of the escaping spirits suddenly whipped toward him, screeching as his power dragged them into a whirling vortex of darkness. Then he released them at the Golurk with HEX, a surging lance of shadow piercing the Automaton Pokémon straight through its hull-like body.[break][break]

With an otherworldly shriek, the Golurk burst into countless wisps of ethereal fire that scattered upon the wind. The scream slowly faded, leaving the campsite bathed in an unsettling, eerie silence.[break][break]

Zev looked over at the three women who'd teleported to safety. Seeing that they were all hale and whole, he walked over to Smoke and patted the hulking Pokémon's side. "Good work."
