Elisabeth's Tsareena strutted back to her side as the Golurk was defeated, tossing her hair as if she had completed the finishing blow, and not Zev Harcourt's Gengar.[break][break]

But Elisabeth's focus was on Lulu Flint, and the implications of her statement. This place was a purgatory of sorts, where spirits and creatures from other dimensions traveled freely. Who was to say they wouldn't bleed into their own world?[break][break]

Or that they hadn't already?[break][break]

"A Shadow Pokemon?" she suggested in regards to the strange being that the Head Scientist had encountered, thinking back to Cillian Quinn and Lugia. "Or... Well, there are many Pokémon we do not recognize as of yet."[break][break]

Though to be able to witness Darkrai's Avatar suggested an unsettling level of power. Beyond that of a normal Pokémon's ken.[break][break]

"What do you make of it?" the botanist asked suddenly, turning to Naomi Sato. Perhaps the other scientist had her own theories.

As Zev Harcourt and Smoke made quick work of the Golurk, Legion scurried over to Nomi's side. She patted each rodent head in turn, pleased with their capable assistance in the fight. A part of her was disappointed to see the Golurk go; after all, they had barely had an opportunity to study it. In the end, though, there was plenty more to learn about The Border, and she was glad they hadn't been brutally murdered.[break][break]
Nomi focused her attention on Lulu Flint and Elisabeth Fiorelli, and what they were discussing. Elisabeth turned to look at Nomi, addressing her directly. Nomi cocked her head, pink hair spilling over her shoulder, expression thoughtful.[break][break]
"On the surface of Meteno, there was a second Deoxys," Nomi recalled. Elisabeth and Zev had not been there, but they'd likely read the reports. Her crimson eyes met Lulu's, however, who had been there. Who'd seen it first hand, just like Nomi.[break][break]
"Did the Pokémon look like...Darkrai?" She wondered. "Perhaps there's more than one of them, too. That would certainly explain why it could see you while you were using your powers."[break][break]
But wouldn't Lulu's Darkrai have instantly recognized one of its own, like Deoxys had? Nomi's brain whirled through various calculations and considerations. It was possible but...[break][break]
"However...it could also have been an entirely new Pokémon," she decided. "I have a suspicion that something quite powerful was trapped behind the broken seal...prior to its breaking. Maybe that is what you encountered..."[break][break]

At a distance away from the campsite, the women were too far away for Zev to overhear their conversation. Instead, he returned to the campfire, which was thankfully still crackling away despite the battle that had raged around it.[break][break]

As if nothing had happened at all, he resumed preparing dinner.[break][break]

He had his own musings, however, which remained unvoiced. First, the Golurk had been enormous; only a mega evolved Pokémon compared to it in size. Second, its behavior had been unnatural. Had it been a reaper of sorts, harvesting the souls of the damned?[break][break]

What other abnormal Pokémon existed in the realm of death? Could they exit the rift into Hoenn?[break][break]

And most importantly: could they be captured, added as more tools to his collection?[break][break]

And that was that. There was nothing more to extrapolate upon, nothing more to be said. Tensions seemed high still, and Elisabeth herself felt unsettled at the notion of staying the night. Her eyes caught Lulu Flint's as she silently expressed the sentiment to the Head Scientist, but she said nothing of her doubts aloud.[break][break]

That would be weakness.[break][break]

Nothing of note would be found in the morning, Elisabeth suspected, but the night promised nightmares, and in a land where nothing stayed dead, their whispers were crueler than most.[break][break]

Time would pass, but always, shadows remained.[break][break]

One does not need to sleep in order to endure nightmares.[break][break]
Nomi was accustomed to staying awake: she often remained hard at work in the lab late into the night. This was different. The small crew of Rockets held vigil around Zev's makeshift campfire until not even the embers remained, plunging them all into a darkness so thick it was as if Nomi had been wrapped up tight in an ebony blanket, minus any coziness. One by one, her companions faded away as the mist obscured their forms and features, shadows taking their places.[break][break]
Nomi ought to have been terrified. She had no idea if Legion's PROTECT - which he summoned around Nomi every hour - would be enough to keep her alive. As time passed, however, she forced her brain to focus on observation rather than fear. Every detail mattered: every sound, every scent, every sensation. She could hear the breathing of the others, so she knew they were still there. She could sense a subtle pulsing, the ebbing and flowing of energies, the comings and goings of spirits on their way to the afterlife.[break][break]
All the while, she tried to will the Pokémon that Lulu Flint had seen into existence.[break][break]
Nothing manifested, but it did feel to Nomi as if they were being watched.[break][break]
Morning came at last, heralding the end of their watch. It was determined that they should head back home to get some real rest, regroup, make a new plan.[break][break]
Had this mission been a success? Nomi wasn't entirely sure.[break][break]
What she was sure of: they weren't done with The Border just yet.[break][break]
