There was something in Eris’ tone as she repeated their home city’s name that made Locke pause, listening intently as she continued.

It…wasn’t a surprise. She had to end up where she was somehow, and the story behind it was never going to be a happy one. But Locke’s heart still clenched as she talked about her own lost home, and the implications beyond that. It was no wonder she’d always seemed so torn between seeking and rejecting the comfort of others.

But then, wasn’t he the same?

”I’m sorry,” he said, as genuinely as though he were the source of her grief. He sat in it for a moment, carefully considering as always just how much of himself he was brave enough to share, and the fine line between consolation and burden.

”When Rocket came, I was stuck hiding alone in a supply closet at school for about four hours before anyone thought to find me.”

It just had to happen during his lunch break.

The sudden explosion of color and sound broke through the quiet spring day, startling Locke into dropping the rest of his sandwich into the sand. He stared at it forlornly for a moment, before his Blissey directed his attention upwards at the source of his misfortune.

Well, at least it was a nice concert.

Bit by bit, the crowd grew around them as they gawked, and it wasn’t until the first elbow caught Locke’s side that they realized they were thoroughly trapped. The boardwalk was well out of sight now, and any attempt they made to move forward only seemed to drag them back into the center.

Hapi-Hapi also seemed to have had enough. She reached into her pouch and retrieved a glowing Egg Bomb, raising it in a upward arc while already reaching for another with her free hand.

”W-Wait! Don’t-”

Locke’s eyes lit up with nostalgia. ”That was Norman! Mom and I waited at the docks all day to get it for Pop-Pop when he heard his ship was stopping in Vermillion. He even let me get a picture of his team!”

Both photo and plates were long gone now, left behind in a past life. But the memory sat warm in his chest regardless.

”We probably would’ve seen a ship from outside,” he added, though with a twinge of disappointment. ”I could go for some ice cream after this though.” De-De chirped in agreement.

Locke hesitated at the threshold of the dimly-lit room, quietly entering at the back of the group and nearly missing the prompt as they dug around for another Pokémon. They managed to find the one they were looking for, and hurriedly released their Volbeat to light up their end of the field a bit more.

Try as they might though, they couldn’t quite wrap their head around this one. Luckily their teammates seemed to have it well-handled, letting them hang back in the comfort of Volty-Volty’s light with Xander Belmont.

The young boy’s apology to the dockworker was genuine even in their hurry to catch up their friend. And Locke did consider Priam a friend, even if they hadn’t hung out for very long. Anyone who didn’t mind the quiet boy with too-small clothes who always smelled of fish made for a good friend, in their o-pin-yon.

Locke’s hair was still an unbrushed mess of cowlicks, and his Nana had only let it go without fuss because she’d already made them change out of their PJs before leaving. Now their frayed and faded Dragonite-print lanyard seemed to be the only thing keeping their precious camera around their neck as they struggled to turn their shirt the right way around without taking it off.

”Lapras?” he said disbelievingly, pausing to catch his breath as he finally managed to reach the other boy. ”How’re we s’pose to do that? I don’t have a Pokémon, and I don’t think either of us has any Pokéballs!”

Or-well-I remembered, like I said Eris and Del Mar never actually forgot. We went to an office to talk about what we knew in private, and-”

He hesitated, shuddering at the memory. Maybe forgetting had been better.

”We-We ended up using our Psychic Pokémon to…I guess try and look into the charms’ futures? It…All of our Pokémon ended up dying, and we got these bubbles in our brains that the doctor later told me would pop if we got too stressed. Which-ya know!” Locke gestured at himself emphatically.

”But, it did work. And we saw a lot of stuff.”

He turned the notepad around for Angelo to read himself, the visions recounted on the page with as much detail as he could recall.

a billboard in lilycove flashes an interrupted broadcast. ‘breaking news’ scrolls underneath the HNN anchor. it reads:

galar in shambles; what is the darkest day?

the sound of rushing water echoes in the background. the smell is damp. musky. the area is dark but a voice calls out. who it comes from is impossible to make out from within the darkness.

“w-who are you? are you a friend of—”

fluorescent lights flicker on and off. sirens ring. the sound of metal floors clanging in unison echo as several dozen footsteps march away. only the last one can be perceived.

a head full of purple hair disappears around the corner.

“once you do this, you can never go back.”

a scream reverberates within a soundproof room. it goes on until the croon of a laser drowns out his screams.

this time the scene is vivid. those who’ve kept up with recent events will recognize the TREE OF LIFE. they’re all present—whether they’re there as spectators of the vision or there at the time of the event, is uncertain.

a murky, large figure floats in front of the tree. whoever or whatever it is has a strange hold on a large black bird. it’s the same one from the SOOTOPOLIS RIOTS.

it drags the yveltal down into the ground and smashes its head repeatedly until the pokemon goes limp. the legendary pokemon remains there. motionless.

the figure turns its attention to the three of them. it stares for a moment before lunging straight at them. a eighteen wheeler sized appendage reaches out for them but is obstructed by a shimmering red barrier. it starts to screech as the barrier buckles underneath the pressure.

a wizz of blue cuts between the three of them. it’s none other than azelf. PROBABILITY sparks flutter from its body as it hold the shield in place.

they remain there. standing. unable to move as the scenery fades back into reality.
