WELCOME TO AFTERNOON TEA

WELCOME TO THE FLEUR TEA ATELIER a sophisticated tea house of many stories. Although the lower floors feature spaces for enjoying specialty teas and fanciful pastries, the upper floors are dedicated to battling. After all, being this close to Hoenn's Pokemon League means you are within a diverse community of formidable trainers.[break][break]

After some time conversing and enjoying the service, the maître d'hôtel arrives in a smart suit. A Mr. Mime wheels in a fanciful room service trolley beside him. On top of the trolley, is a large cloche. "you are all signed up for the tiered tea room challenge, yes? what is your team's name?" [break][break]

He pulls out a notepad and pen, expecting an answer. Afterward, he asks his Mr. Mime to reveal the contents underneath the cloche. Several items for your Pokemon to equip are revealed.

After selections are made (or not made), he directs you all to wooden staircase. "bon courage! you do not want to START ON THE WRONG FOOT!" He offers a hint with a smile.[break]

Hideo was halfway through his third cake slice by the time he’d been called over to his group. He didn’t have access to a lot of sweets in these frugal times of his, so he just had to indulge when the chance arose. His clothing was fairly simple; he hadn’t known what the dress code was, so he just went with his usual striped-sweater and a nice pair of jeans. Nobody told him it was wrong yet, and it was something comfortable enough for what he was really here for.

After wiping his mouth and hands with a napkin his Beheeyem had so-helpfully acquired for him, he joined up with his group. He knew most of the people in it - though he’d yet to realize it; his Beheeyem only recognized Locke Jamison . There was some comfort from the familiarity, though he didn’t know what anyone here was capable of in a challenge like this.

He’d find out soon enough. "Hideo Kino, here!" he announced, raising his hand as he swallowed what cake remained in his mouth.

But first, a very important decision: team name. Hideo put a hand to his chin, curling his fingers as he deliberated the choice. He’d leave the other choice to his Pokemon: “Elga, you can choose an item. I gotta think about a good group name.”

Team Top?

Teateam?

As he silently deliberated the name, his Beheeyem looked over the options presented to them, lifting up a pair of Heavy Duty Boots psychically.

Dress code? Angelo didn't know her.

Coming into the atelier after spending a morning within his rundown hangar, Angelo's attire consists of dusty boots, paint splashed jeans and an old t-shirt that has a tear in the neckline beneath his leather jacket.

Although the only thing he seems to care about is the steaming mug of coffee in hand, rather than the dirt and paint that clings to the ridges of his fingers.

He's not here for the elegance and tea, after all. Competition is far sweeter.

Angelo quickly throws back the rest of his hot drink - swallowing a curse word along with it - as he and the rest of the group are ushered onwards. He knocks an elbow lightly against Locke Jamison's arm on the way in greeting.

“Kid's choice,” a nod is tilted towards Hideo Kino. “Whatever you pick is gonna be ten times better than whatever Sky suggests.”

Said woman is thrown a look out of the corner of crinkled, blue eyes. His lips tilted in lopsided trouble.

It felt like ages since they'd done something together...

Turning to the fancy, pristine trolley, Angelo is drawn towards the small feather-shaped leaf which he ends up pocketing.

Much like Angelo, Skyler blends in about as well as would be expected.

Scuffed leather boots stomp down on polished floors with a vengeance, weaving between the crowds of hopeful trainers. Sneaky fingers pluck increasingly ridiculous contructions of sweet paste from random trays as she goes, popping them into her mouth gracelessly while not-so-subtly surveying the crowd.

(The captain leaves the tea well enough alone. She's got her own drink presently sitting within her own trusty flask. And it's certainly a whole lot better than dirty herb water.)

"The Almighty Skyducks is a perfectly good name, I'll have you know." Whether she's pulling Angelo's leg or being perfectly serious remains a mystery lodged beneath a scowl made to fell lesser men. Or, perhaps, angelo vestri in particular.

She catches sight of the other members of their Tea Team, blinking in recognition as her gaze jumps from one to the next. She winks in lieu of greeting, and gently pats Hideo Kino's shoulder - okay, so she might have a soft spot for the lil rebel. "Locke. Painter Boy. Pipsqueak. Glad to see you all alive and well."

One never knew in Hoenn.

Distractedly, she chooses the boots for herself before they're ushered into the next room.

Locke owned exactly two outfits, and didn’t particularly feel like getting his slightly-nicer blazer any more damaged than it already was. Either from the battles scheduled to start soon, or the pastries he and De-De were currently stuffing into their faces.

He greeted Hideo Kino and Elga between mouthfuls of cake. ”Howzit goin’?”

The team was soon gathered without major event, aside from a brief elbow scuffle with angelo vestri while wrapping up some of the less-frosted treats to store away for later. Locke also topped off his thermos with some of the matcha he’d been drinking, favoring it over the collection of rarer blends available, and even missing the slight bitterness that came with the cheaper variety he was used to.

Really, they felt completely out of place here. Between the ostentatious décor, the expensive food, and even down to the entire purpose of the event, they were a little out of their depth. But at least the rest of their team were more on their level, in terms of fanciness.

”I also immediately thought about the Mighty Psyducks…” Locke admitted in response to skyler dross’ suggestion. They were always a sucker for an underdog story. ”I’m sure Hideo’ll come up with something good though,” they added encouragingly.

They were almost expecting more food when the Mr. Mime wheeled out the trolley, and stared blankly between the strange assortment items that were revealed instead. De-De was less hesitant, however, snatching up the Rawst Berry and lifting it towards her open beak until her trainer managed to confiscate it. ”No! Not yet!”

EXPOSITION

WELCOME TO AFTERNOON TEA

ON THE FIRST CHALLENGE FLOOR, an archaeologist squats with a magnifying glass raised to his eye. Before him, a Roselia twists and turns in place like a demure child. Several spikes are riddled across the teahouse's floors, evidently from the Roselia itself.[break][break]

His voice, hoarse from age, sputters out from underneath his bushy mustache. "i know the pains of those SPIKES personally. send your pokemon out without turning them into pincushions and you'll triumph over this floor, my fellow tea lovers!" The man rises— but by just a tad. One hand remains on his knee, while the other shakily holds the lens.[break][break]

In the middle of the room's flooring, an inscription is written:[break]
"Once there were four.[break]
And one looked upon time's steady pace.[break]
And one looked upon the expanse of space.[break]
And one looked through its pane,[break]
And one looked for disorder to maintain.[break]
Only two did set out,[break]
the fullness of future they did seek,[break]
the world's far end would they greet."

Hideo nodded as Locke Jamison greeted him. "Been busy," he said, "getting badges, solving mysteries. The usual."

Hideo visibly lit up as the role of name-maker was generously gifted to him by angelo vestri . But as he was deliberating on a lame pun (that he wouldn’t recognize as such), skyler dross suggested a name that got the boy to snort. “I like that one!” he said, raising a finger up. “Let’s go with that one! We’ll be the Mighty Skyducks!”

Name successfully decided (and Hideo recognizing all the voices - save for the one that gave him naming rights), it was time for their first challenge: Spikes. Simple enough.

His Ninjask - part-flying - would be more than up to the task. Though as Hideo thought of how the bug would move him across, she’d already made the decision, latching on to the top of his head and lifting him up over the spikes. Not a very elegant solution, and he was pretty certain he looked like a dork the whole way through. Hideo just kept a neutral expression throughout the trip - his Ninjask matching it.

This was why he preferred flying with his Dragonite.

His Beheeyem was close behind, just floating over the spikes. While Hideo couldn’t read the writing on the ground, his Beheeyem could. Elga floated above the words, Telepathically reading it for the boy, only catching up with the rest of the group once he was done.

Hideo didn't know what to make of it. "You guys think that poem's about Legendary Pokemon or something?"

Ninjask avoids Spikes damage due to being part-Flying-type.
Ninjask lifts Hideo over the spikes in the least-dignified way
Beheeyem floats behind, reading the inscription for Hideo
Heavy Duty Boots still held

After establishing that everyone in the room has terrible taste - Xander Belmont excluded, he gains points for being bold enough to take on the challenge in white attire - Angelo takes the stairs two at a time.

On the first floor, their challenge takes the shape of an archaeologist frail enough to be knocked down by one good breeze, standing amongst a pricky sea.

Angelo throws Locke Jamison an encouraging grin, as confident in his own ability to get over the obstacle as he was that the postman could.

After a toss of a pokeball, the pilot throws himself onto a Braviary's back as naturally as putting one foot in front of the other.

They fly over to the other side of the room with ease, the challenge simplistic enough to allow Angelo time to notice the inscription below.

“Let's just say I wouldn't not bet on it.” Angelo responds to Hideo Kino when he reaches the other side, sliding off Braviary with a thud of his boots hitting the floorboards.

On the back of his hand, the words '4 TIME SPACE PANE DISORDER 2 FUTURE WORLD'S END' have been scribbled in a messy scrawl. Documenting was a habit by this point.

“Who's to say a tea house in the middle of Hoenn couldn't be 'The world's far end'?” Angelo sounds sarcastic, but this was Hoenn, after all.

”Badges? I didn’t know you were into that sorta thing.” Hideo Kino had struck them as a lot chiller than the average competitor. ”How many do you have?”

Locke continued making light conversation as the team were shuffled upstairs, almost working up the nerve to properly address the only person they didn’t recognize before they were presented with their first challenge.

De-De, energized from a full meal and more than a little sugar-high, was already taking a running start into a Rapid Spin, until Locke hoisted her off the ground mid-rotation. ”No, no, we just gotta avoid em, not get rid of em,” they explained. "He's the future champion," she tells Locke Jamison , motioning to Hideo with a small tilt of her chin, unashamedly butting into the conversation. Watching Hideo Kino fly over to the other side with his Ninjask reminds her of current champion's kyle lopez 's flying (floating?) Manectric. "His style is on point, at least."

And also he'd liked her team name. Smugness radiates from her as she deliberately throws angelo vestri a look over her shoulder, shit-eating grin in place as if to say 'take that, idiot'. In her head, an imaginary scoreboard records her victory: Skyler 1, Angelo 0.

Traversing over the ocean of spikes is an easy enough task on Atalanta's back. Her scarred ruby-red wings carry them onto the other side, and Skyler slides onto the ground with practised ease. Familiar with Angelo, Atalanta gently butts her head into his chest.

"Maybe whoever wrote that just likes poetry." Unlike Locke, Skyler seems utterly unconcerned with the words. Then again, she was the farthest thing from the brains of the operation. The words do remind her of the distortions that have been appearing all over the region, and the weird happenings during the Sootopolis invasion...

It was probably nothing, right?

Right.

She does her best to convince herself.

"Looking mighty fancy there, Painter Boy." Eyebrows raised, she gives Xander Belmont a slow once over. In this ragtag group, he definitely sticks out.

“Wouldn’t really expect the world to end at a teahouse,” Hideo mused, a small sigh and a frown at what he thought was angelo vestri ’s joke. He already had one prophecy of the world (or at least the region) getting destroyed on his mind - another one like that didn't sit well with him.

At least he had Locke Jamison ’s question to distract him from that. “I got five so far,” he said, all five fingers on his hand raised up. He drew his Ninjask back into her Pokeball, stopping once his Beheeyem informed him he was at the first step of the staircase. “And Skyler’s right: I’m planning to be Champion, so make sure to keep an eye out for when I reach the top!”

With a quick nod to his Beheeyem, the Psychic type aided him up the stairs - by just Psychically lifting him up. While Hideo was more than capable of climbing them himself, he was quite slow at it, and he didn’t want to hold anyone up. “Well, nobody’s told us off for not being dressed right,” he said, to what Xander Belmont mentioned, “and some people just overdress whenever they can, so it’s no problem!”

In due time, they’d reached the next floor, and were introduced to their next challenge: hit a Pokemon that had Dived into the water. Easy enough.

Hideo took out a Pokeball, letting out a Doublade. “Alright, Doublade, go get ‘em. But be gentle.” The sentient sword(s) nodded, diving right into the water. It didn’t matter how the Relicanth tried to evade him: No Guard would be enough to stop him from getting in there and delivering a (light) Slash.

All the while, the inscription in the room had gotten Hideo’s Beheeyem’s attention, the Pokemon reading it for Hideo. “Well, if it’s talking about Pokemon related to Arceus, I can take a couple guesses who they are…but who’s it talking to with those last couple lines? It talking about them too, or is it about us? Or just people in general?”

Doublade's No Guard ability is enough to bypass Dive's semi-invulnerability.

“Good to see you too, Lanta.” Angelo's smile softens the Salamence bumps her head against his chest, scarred hands automatically reaching out to frame the war-hardened dragon's head.

Motion imprinted within him from handling his own weyr, he firmly scrapes blunt nails against Atalanta's scales, affectionately scratching behind the sharp fins on either side of her skull.

Up to the next floor they trek, where they're met with a fresh new challenge and a continuation from the alleged poet.

Angelo throws a pokeball beside Hideo Kino, their future champ, and a Gyarados with crimson scales snakes into the depths of the pool alongside the Doublade.

Swirling waters encase the Relicanth, a WHIRLPOOL keeping it contained - and open for attack.

He brushes shoulders with skyler dross in the meantime, physically and in easy chatter. “What's your poet friend have to say now?”

Angelo gives the new verse a quick look over, its inscription of 'wishes' nestling itself into his brain and stirring unsettled memories.

“Hey. Suit?” Expression casual, unperturbed, he turns to the man (Xander Belmont) he's unfamiliar with, raising the back of his hand he'd scribbled on. He hadn't caught 'Painter Boy's' name yet.

“Mind taking some more pictures for us again? I'm out of hand.”
