Theo was delusional, Zev decided as he contemplated the chess board. [break][break]

After all, the Rocket Beast had not done anything to sow discord among the other Avatars or the lower ranks. Ever since his promotion, he'd trained the crime syndicate's grunts, hunted their defectors, assassinated and tortured their enemies, and fought the League's powerhouses on their behalf. [break][break]

Even now, as war brewed on the horizon, Zev was formulating a S.P.E.C.T.R.A. assessment trial with jayden cross—one of the organization's most loyal members. [break][break]

Zev moved another piece. "Then you're looking for nails to hammer down in the wrong place, Beckett." [break][break]

But in his experience, humans believed whatever they wanted to believe, no matter what was said otherwise. Such behavior was often their downfall.

Hitoshi's mispronunciation of declan walsh's name did not even register with Zev. The boy had always struggled with names; there was doubt that Hitoshi even remembered Zev's, despite their regular training sessions. [break][break]

"It's true," the Rocket Beast said, nodding. He took another drag of his cigarette. Sea spray filled the air with the taste of salt. "We've sat cozy in Sootopolis for long enough. It's almost time for the next stage of our conquest." [break][break]

'We', as if Zev still cared for such trivial matters as Team Rocket's conquest of the region. [break][break]

"When we get back to Sootopolis, I'm going to set up a final assessment with oscar clayton. He runs a survival training program using Genesect. It should put everything you've learned to the test." [break][break]

Zev flicked ash into the sea. He glanced sidelong at Hitoshi with steel in his eyes. [break][break]

Zev's eyes followed the movement of Nenet's fingers as they lingered over a couple of different rings. The first one looked well-made, but its beauty paled in comparison to his wife's. "I agree," he said, nodding his head. "The yellow gold looks better." [break][break]

A whine from their feet reminded him of the Rockruff accompanying them that day. Crouching, he scooped up the Pokémon in his arms and held him over the glass display. [break][break]

"What do you think, Apollo?" he asked playfully. "Do you like that gold one with all the diamonds for your mom?" Technically, Nenet was the puppy's "grandmother," but calling the woman that was too weird even for Zev. [break][break]

Feeling left out, his Zoroark-turned-Obstagoon shuffled closer for a look for herself. [break][break]

A saleswoman approached, drawn by the curious group hovering over the rings. "Can I help you with anything?" she asked.

At Theo's declaration, Zev smiled. Not because he was pleased to hear it. Not because it was satisfying to have an underboss make such a promise to him. [break][break]

He smiled because Theo still misunderstood. [break][break]

But instead of correcting the other man, Zev merely asked, "Accept them like you have? Like Quinn? What makes you think the rest will come to heel if I do, when they've already had ample opportunity to observe an Avatar's loyalty?" [break][break]

Reaching over, he moved another chess piece. [break][break]

"If you think the others fear me enough to fall in line behind me, think again."

Smooth indeed. In Zev's eyes, the operation had gone without a hitch, filling him with the assured satisfaction of a grunt well-trained. Hitoshi had struggled in the beginning, but he was proving to be a keen-minded and hardworking student. [break][break]

Zev reached into his pocket and pulled out a pack of cigarettes. He pulled one out for himself, then extended them to the younger man. [break][break]

"You've made a lot of progress in the past few months," he observed. "You might soon be ready for a final trial." [break][break]

A lighter flared to life, its flame cradled in Zev's other hand. He inhaled the sweet smoke, enjoying the way the nicotine scratched an itch deep in his brain. Exhaling, he watched gray wisps disperse in the air.

Zev leaned over a glass display of sparkling rings, sweeping a critical eye over the entire collection. Other similar displays occupied the space around him, filled with all manner of jewelry and watches—primarily for women, but a few for men as well. [break][break]

But the rings in particular had captured his attention. They were his reason for visiting that jewelry store in Lilycove's infamous department store. Though, if none of them passed his criteria, there were always other stores. [break][break]

Of course, he was not walking around in broad daylight with his normal face. Instead, his Zoroark's illusion disguised him as Jason Kellner, an Unovan transplant and owner of a small security company. [break][break]

Blonde hair replaced black, and hazel eyes replaced blue. Even the shape of his face had changed, completing the disguise. Even his Pokémon had taken on a new form, appearing as an Obstagoon instead. [break][break]

Zev looked over at Nenet, his companion for the shopping trip. "Do you see any you like?" he asked, slipping an arm around her waist. "Remember, money's not an issue."

Curiosity about Ultra Space and the secrets therein unexpectedly bore potent fruit. Zev originally traveled to Ultra Crater to watch over his wife, Nenet, while she conducted studies on the Pokémon and other lifeforms dwelling there. It was an opportunity for me to write out the progression of their relationship, the building of trust between them in the face of danger. [break][break]

Their encounter with Lunala at the Moone Altar tested this bond. Zev could have subdued the enraged Pokémon with ease, using much more brutal force than he and his shard of Necrozma employed during battle. But Nenet wanted to help it and keep it alive. Not for the first time, he deferred to her wishes, taking offensive action only when she faced imminent danger. [break][break]

How affirming and satisfying, for Zev, to learn that such a bond could reap incredible power. Never in history had Necrozma, through an Avatar, absorbed the Ultra Burst of another Pokémon. Dawn Wings Necrozma is the first of its kind. Now Zev knows it is possible to gain more power for his patron—and, in turn, receive more power for himself. [break][break]

All thanks to Nenet and her impassioned interest in Ultra Space. [break][break]

What other reservoirs of untapped power exist out there? What would happen if Zev were to absorb the Ultra Bursts of other Pokémon known to have such potential? And how can he maneuver Nenet to explore such possibilities for him? [break][break]

2. IMAGE OF THE BEAST[break]
Zev's bond with Necrozma is a reflection of his lack of humanity, and being able to explore that line between man and monster is one of the great pleasures of writing him on this site. However, this exploration does not exist in a vacuum. Instead, it contributes to a larger context: the gradual reveal of his Avatarship to the League—and to the region at large. [break][break]

Over the course of the past several months, I have allowed the revelations to build up. In the beginning with TO SOW DRAGON'S TEETH (RIGHTWARD), Zev displayed many of his powers, but he kept his armor hidden and did not summon Necrozma. And when he did use his armor in skirmishes with the League, such as during HYSTERIA and THE ABYSS GAZES ALSO, he kept his identity hidden. [break][break]

But as conflicts between the League and Team Rocket escalated, and as the universe continued its unhindered hurtle toward destiny, Zev has increasingly shown his hand. He unveils the full extent of his inhumanity to the newly imbued Avatar of Palkia in COLLISION and to Admin Fox in SUP ON DIVINE POISON. At long last, he deploys his shard of Necrozma against an Elite Four in DISCOMFIT. [break][break]

And it culminates in tearing the mask completely off in PRISMATIC PENITENTIARY. [break][break]

Interspersed between these big moments are smaller ones, reminders that even when Zev appears human, he never truly is. He does not hesitate to harm children in ARBOREAL ANTICS. His blood reveals a transformed biology in PROPHAGE. The contrast between NOBODY BUT US and APPEAL reminds readers that no matter what he feels, he can never cross the gap into true emotional bonds. Everything up to this point has worked to establish Zev as a terrifying adversary for the League… and an apocalyptic threat to Hoenn in general. And with the region on the brink of war, I look forward to seeing how his involvement affects the tides of change. [break][break]

As Zev reveals himself more and more to friend and foe alike, he participates in more direct conflict. It has been a refreshing challenge to balance his powers and function as a formidable villain. I take great care to write threads where he struggles as well as succeeds, making adjustments to his abilities depending on what different scenes demand. [break][break]

I also strive to ensure that the conflicts in which Zev engages are meaningful to his opponents. I seek conflict and drama that push plots forward, especially the plots of those who lose to him. A wise man once said that in order for the hero to feel that his victory has been earned, he must struggle time and time again against powerful villains. I fully apply that philosophy to Zev, anticipating future setbacks for him when the heroes pitted against him eventually succeed. [break][break]

But in the meantime, he will only get stronger and scarier. His increasing power mirrors the threat of his patron's return to this universe. And the more he gains in power, the more he loses of himself: that precious thread of humanity that keeps him independent of Necrozma. Though it is a slow process, it is one he does not resist. After all, who would resist divinity?

any notes/comments: I can't believe I didn't have Dawn Wings Necrozma on my bingo board for this year. In all seriousness, it has been a tough month for me due to RL matters, and Hoenn has been a wonderful distraction and source of joy for me during this difficult time. I appreciate all the marvelous writers who've invited me to plot with them, and who've given me the room to showcase Zev in all his terrible villainy.

There it was again—that strange declaration. Nenet rarely expressed it; she knew better. Yet unlike the first time, Zev did not think to warn her. Instead, his gaze lowered to their entwined fingers. [break][break]

Her skin pressed against his was warm and inviting. Despite the stressors of the day, he felt completely relaxed, curled up with her in their bed. In the privacy of their room, their home. Only with her did he feel no compulsion to hide himself or fabricate lies. [break][break]

There was no explanation for it, except that he trusted her. Because he could count on her, no matter what. [break][break]

What a rare and precious fortune for a man like him. [break][break]

Zev leaned forward, closing the gap between them, and pressed a tender kiss against her mouth in quiet gratitude. And though he did not feel that inexorably human spark, that strongest of emotional bonds, he said it anyway. [break][break]

With his connection to his patron fully restored, Zev felt it before he saw it: the shifting of the very fabric of space. Raising his gaze, he registered a familiar shard of Palkia taking up position next to his Dynamaxed shard of Necrozma. [break][break]

The sight of them together, not tearing each other apart but standing united against a common enemy, shifted his understanding. Without warning, the universe opened up before him, the vastness of it all-encompassing. He saw with another's eyes the great field of stars, clouds of dust and gas birthing new planets, and supernovae collapsing into void. [break][break]

"Our powers are entangled," Zev said, turning his head to regard illeana reyes, who had appeared nearby despite the line of Rockets that faced her. Did THEO BECKETT care that she had come to them? Did Cillian Quinn? [break][break]

Zev spoke without regard for their presence or whether they could overhear. He stepped toward his counterpart until they stood side-by-side. "That's what you said to me once, Alchemist. One cannot exist without the other." [break][break]

At that moment, the enemy descended through the hole in the ceiling. Three Dynamaxed Pokémon, one Megalopolan puppet, one Never-Rot. [break][break]

As Dynergy swelled around them, the Devourer's transformation completed. Every cell of his body crystallized into armor. Blue eyes paled to brilliant starlight within pits of fathomless black. He stared upward, unfazed by either Cyllora's shouts or the despairing wails of her fellow Megalopolans. [break][break]

GRAVITY took hold of the entire chamber, chipping away at Fezandpiti's enormous mask. The Necrozma shard roared in defiance as poisoned mochi pelted its Dynamax barrier. Its alien scream shook the walls of the ship, and the very air. [break][break]

"Can you get us close to the enemy?" Zev asked Illeana. In the undercurrent of his voice, an alien reverb echoed. [break][break]

He extended a clawed hand toward her. [break][break]

"Let's put your theory to the test." [break][break]

Blastoise watched the curious human known as Caleb Harcourt from the corner of her eye. Though she was ostensibly there to help clean out birdhouses, she was also there for reconnaissance duty. Her master had given her specific instructions to gather information about the Rangers. [break][break]
