Lyra didn't mind cleaning up abandoned bird houses. She didn't mind helping out flying types. But what she did mind, was Caleb's ridiculous behavior.[break][break]
Her beloved trainer was flitting between ollie morales and BARNABY FINCH like an indecisive Combee, two very different flowers with equally enticing aromas. One was a familiar comfort, the sun peaking through clouds on an overcast day; the other, a clever Seviper with a dangerously honeyed tongue, his banter always a touch too demeaning for Lyra's liking. And yet, Caleb obsessed over both of them, leaving her to do the hard work of HYDRO PUMPING water into the various empty enclosures until they were spotless.[break][break]
Would this really make a difference for Hoenn's bird population? The Lapras had no idea, but she deferred to the shiny Cramorant nearby, who seemed to understand the nuances of their task. She was pleased when she spied Isaac Merlo and Watson in the crowd of volunteers; if anyone could snap Caleb out of his idiotic fawning, it was them.

Blastoise watched the curious human known as Caleb Harcourt from the corner of her eye. Though she was ostensibly there to help clean out birdhouses, she was also there for reconnaissance duty. Her master had given her specific instructions to gather information about the Rangers. [break][break]

It just so happened that one of them was his estranged brother. [break][break]

Keeping her distance from Caleb's Lapras but staying within sight range of the man himself, Blastoise lumbered over to another birdhouse. Clouds gathered overhead, summoned with RAIN DANCE, and released a downpour upon everything in the area.

Jet kept an eye on his trainer while he worked after seeing the human known as Caleb Harcourt flirting between two of the other people. Something about which he knew his companion wouldn’t be too happy. He was right. Ever was outright glaring at the three more, so Caleb Harcourt. The pinkette was definitely not happy about them flirting rather than doing something productive. Though whatever that may be was the question.

If Ever wasn’t busy glaring, then he was ignoring everyone. Well, almost everyone. He didn’t seem to be opposed to interacting with Josh Devlin from time to time while ignoring everyone else. He knew Ever didn’t mean anything by it. He was just too slow to warm up to others, especially in a crowded situation. Basically, the only reason he wasn’t ignoring Josh or glaring at him as well was because he knew the older male. Josh was really the only one he really knew out of the people gathered.

The Sharpedo knew this, but that didn’t make him any less unhappy that his trainer seemed adamant about isolating himself.

Tearing his thoughts away from the humans, he resumed working. Like the others, he had been tasked with clearing out bird houses, which he was doing by using a water pulse. It cleaned out the bird houses really well.

And once one birdhouse had been cleaned out, he would move on to another one.

After having been practically dragged here by Caleb Harcourt, BARNABY FINCH had stationed himself at the cleanest of the nests, closest to the city center. Though he had no interest in actually scrubbing them until they were useable again, to any passersby it would look as if he was actually helping. [break][break]

Not that he needed much assistance in avoiding work considering Caleb's periodic interruptions.[break][break]

"Why not simply focus on the ranger, hm?"[break][break]

Barnaby suggested, throwing ollie morales a withering look before shooing Caleb Harcourt away.[break][break]

"Pay me no mind."[break][break]

Elaine, to her credit, was much more interested in the task at hand than her trainer. She busied herself by giving a HELPING HAND to the Pokémon all around, skipping merrily from one birdhouse to another wherever she was needed.

"The Ranger" may not have been the one BARNABY FINCH meant. Where he tagged out, Isaac tagged in, giving his good friend, technical superior, and fellow amnesty rescue a friendly shoulder nudge.[break][break]

As cheerful and oblivious as it looked, it was actually quite calculated. From strange Blastoises in the corner of his vision to ever blackwell's withering gaze, Caleb Harcourt was the center of attention right now. The last thing Isaac wanted was for the poor guy to be given even more guff after everything he'd been through. If being Caleb's life raft was what it took to spare him the humiliation, then so be it.[break][break]

Besides, what was he supposed to do? Clean by himself? Clearly, the guy who could literally spirit the mess away in a plume of hydrokinetic water was completely useless here. No, no. Only with Caleb's firm, guiding hand could Isaac truly live up to the potential he had within.[break][break]

At least Watson had hustle and initiative. The Totodile merrily Dragon Danced from stall to stall, obliterating any expired food with a high-pressure burst of his Hydro Pump. It was as if he took the very idea of food that couldn't be eaten personally.

Unlike many of the water Pokémon on the job, Dimitri was not good at power washing; the hulking reptile's LIQUIDATION would have turned any birdhouse it touched to splinters. Perhaps it was a good thing the amphibian's saddle remained strapped to his back. Lacking the moves to be able to effectively clean the posts keeping the bird houses in place, he made himself useful the way would under Josh's control.

Approaching lam logan's CRAMORANT, ollie morales's WARTORTLE, or both, the Mauville Leader's Pokémon would offer them a seat on his back for added height and stability in aiming their high-pressure water sprays to make the poles and birdhouses shine. He didn't have to contribute directly to make a difference -- just a little assist!

orange crush the cramorant had this task on lock. The plap plap plap of the water fowl's wide, webbed feet could be heard as she waddled from birdhouse to birdhouse. a bright orange head craned to one side on a long neck as she noted Caleb Harcourt's lapra taking cues from her, and so she did her best to make her own jets of high pressure HYDRO PUMP just as powerful as the larger pokemon's.[break][break]

really, she took this quite seriously and so her feathers fluffed up proudly. though slow, placid blinks of her green eyes noticed the strange tension that seemed to exist not among the pokemon, but their trainers. Her own, of course, was oblivious to the small scale drama that seemed to be unfolding as Caleb Harcourt oscillated between ollie morales and BARNABY FINCH, much to the critical eye of ever blackwell. Lam was much too preoccupied with checking over the bedding that went into the freshly cleaned houses - eager to see what sorts of birds would return to roost in the empty spaces.[break][break]

A stilted clicking cluck sound inched up her throat and out of her beak - obviously amused with the gym leader's failure to read the room in lieu of his hyper-fixation. He was just pausing to crack a joke with Josh Devlin when the Mauville racer's own wartortle offered the back of his shell as a perch: something that Orange Crush gladly took him up on.[break][break]

Scrambling up on his back, the cramorant unleashed another rushing HYDRO PUMP at one of the houses at the end of a taller platform.

ollie didn't consider himself a jealous person. he usually wasn't.

[break][break] but there was just something about the way that Caleb Harcourt would fly towards him and then disappear like a shooting star that set his gut twisting uncomfortably that he could not quite quell. but the feeling would disappear every time caleb came back, with a joke or a comment that would make him laugh, expression brightening like a ball of sunshine. it was easy to forget, as ollie laughed and smiled and organized the rest of the rangers in order, as was his job.

[break][break] however, his trainer may have been too foolish to notice the reason, but hops wasn't. as the wartortle's blasts of water worried away at the paint on the buildings, his eyes glanced towards the elite ranger as he disappeared from the ranger captain's line of sight when he was distracted by another person's questions.

[break][break] but ollie eventually did notice, brow furrowed together in confusion at the withering look the reporter BARNABY FINCH gave him. was it because he'd turned down the reporter's advances for another interview? or — what was he and Isaac Merlo talking about? why was Caleb Harcourt over there?

[break][break] "hey - "

[break][break] ollie opened his mouth to say something, to call for caleb maybe, when a sudden RAIN DANCE over the building's walls made the head ranger glance up in surprise. doused in water, the wartortle could be seen running across the buildings with a smug grin, shell slightly aglow with new life.

[break][break] whatever it took to bring that smile back to ollie's face —
