Though Zev did not deign to acknowledge Lulu Flint's sharp demand, he met Elisabeth Fiorelli's gaze as she glanced back over her shoulder at him. Her quip and smile earned her the slightest of smirks from the Beast.[break][break]

Then, snapping a command to his Gengar, he shouted, "Smoke! Finish it!"[break][break]

The Ghost-type's grin widened. All of the shadows in the immediate area drew toward him, coming together in a whirling vortex of darkness. Then the shadow surged toward the spectral Moltres, striking the great bird with NEVER-ENDING NIGHTMARE.[break][break]

A terrible screech filled the air as Moltres buckled and collapsed, its body beginning to dissipate into ethereal flames. The remaining ghosts, seeing the mythical creature struck down, retreated back into the mist with angry, frustrated howls.

Nomi watched with widened crimson eyes as the fiery spirit of Moltres flared bright and hot as Zev Harcourt's Gengar landed its finishing blow. The sound it made was horrible, and it took a measure of willpower for Nomi not to cover her ears. In a flash of rage-red energy, the legendary bird's ghost burst into flames at the top of the Jubokko Tree. Red leaves reddened further, catching fire, and in a matter of moments the entire canopy had been burned to ash. Like the phoenix it represented, Moltres would likely rise again someday, but for now, its vengeful spirit had been quelled.[break][break]
Silence fell around the beaten and battered party of Rockets. The haunting had ended, the mist was fading. Before them stood the tree, now completely devoid of leaves. Lonely, crooked branches reached towards the sky like fingers grasping towards heaven, desperate for salvation.[break][break]
Nomi let out a breath. The tree was no longer dangerous; it had been stripped of its primary source of power. In time, it might recover, but that could take years...centuries even. The young scientist approached the trunk once more - as she had prior to Moltres's initial attack - and found that the thick wood surrounding the seal they had noticed earlier had crumbled away, revealing more of its shape. The seal was inert, dull, clearly damaged. Spurred by some intuitive sense, Nomi reached up and brushed her fingertips lightly against it. It felt cool to the touch.[break][break]
"What do you make of this?" She asked, looking over her shoulder at her companions.

Elisabeth Fiorelli ’s thanks recieved a brief, rattled look from lulu. ”sure. glad you’re alright.” strangely lukewarm words from her, which she seemed to realize with a pinch of distaste before turning sharply towards Zev Harcourt .[break][break]
she approached to stare the beast in one in eye to the other, assessing. meanwhile, utter horror remained in her own, as well as a redness that could not be wholly credited to exhaustion.[break][break]
”whatever just happened to you, let us know if you start to feel that way again.” curiosity about his experience should have been there, but her tone was more evident of a desire to move on. questions would come later.[break][break]
she scarcely made further eye contact with anyone as they continued. when Naomi Sato inspected the seal, she didn’t get as close. ”not sure, but there must be some significance to its location in this tree. your johtoian legends don’t mention anything similar?” a question for elisabeth as well.[break][break]

An eyebrow lifted at the curious change in Lulu Flint's tone, but Elisabeth didn't comment upon it. There wasn't the same wrongness that had accompanied Zev Harcourt's possession, at least; instead, it felt like observing an oddly intrusive emotional state that the Rocket admin knew better than to acknowledge.[break][break]

As this was, in the end, a work outing.[break][break]

"Well, legends like to say the jubokko tree can grab you by the roots and branches, sucking your blood dry," Elisabeth said with wry, dark humor. "Thankfully, this tree seems more interested in letting the undead do the dirty work."[break][break]

Having finished speaking, she knelt down beside Naomi Sato, staring at the revealed seal and its cracked surface. Getting close was likely unwise, but they had gone through so much to get to this point, she couldn't resist taking her opportunity.[break][break]

A pale hand reached for the seal, and though no bird of fire and ash appeared this time, a palpable sense of unease washed over her. Something wrong emanated from its heart, though what it was, Elisabeth had no way of saying, exactly.[break][break]

"Mm. Odd." Her green eyes blinked, suddenly dry from the onslaught of flames and smoke. "There doesn't appear to be much else to see here, but... I wouldn't be surprised if this seal proved to be some energy source of sorts. It feels... off?"[break][break]

It was hardly a scientific observation, but it was the best she could manage all the same.[break][break]

"I agree with the Head Scientist. There is nothing more to be gained at the present time... but we should return."[break][break]

Soon, she willed silently to herself.[break][break]

"It was impossible to speak with you while Lang controlled my body," he explained to her. It was not an excuse; he was merely stating facts. "It would be better if Smoke could PHANTOM FORCE me elsewhere until I recovered. And the same goes for any of you."[break][break]

The words tasted like ash on his tongue, and a long-forgotten itch crawled along his skin. Control. A decade had passed since he'd felt the distinct lack of it. He had gotten used to total autonomy.[break][break]

While Naomi Sato and Elisabeth Fiorelli observed the strange seal up close, Zev hung back with Lulu, feeling heightened caution after what had just transpired. And besides, he had no expertise regarding such things.[break][break]

Returning to Hoenn was a good idea. He nodded along as the women exchanged words, his blue eyes scanning the horizon in case other dangers approached. That was his job on the expedition, after all: protection. And who knew what might try to stop them from returning safely to the rift?[break][break]

At Elisabeth Fiorelli's mention of energy, Nomi glanced at her curiously. The two were side by side now, close enough to touch. The admin was a stunning woman - even in the aftermath of a life-threatening fight with the enraged ghost of Moltres and several unruly human spirits - and Nomi felt suddenly captivated by Elisabeth's keen emerald gaze. I never wished you harm, she almost said to her, thinking back to the incident in the Ultra Deep Sea and their conversation afterwards. Now wasn't really the time for the continuation of that discussion or any other private sentiments, however.[break][break]
And, anyway, Elisabeth was right. Nomi sensed it too. A subtle wrongness coming from the broken seal. At first, Nomi had thought it was coming from the now listless Jubokko...but Elisabeth's assessment was more accurate. Beyond the broken seal there was a distinct feeling of...darkness and decay.[break][break]
"In Johto, when you visit a shrine, the seals there are often considered the intermediaries between humanity and the God," Nomi explained. "I wonder..." Was The Border home to one or more legendary Pokémon that nobody in Hoenn had discovered yet?[break][break]
But Lulu Flint was right, they needed to regroup. Even if they could somehow pry the seal out of the tree and bring it back with them, what would that accomplish? What if they roused an even more dangerous foe? They needed more resources, and Nomi wanted to document their experience with Moltres while it was fresh in her mind.[break][break]
The young woman rose, took one last look at the seal, then turned her back on it. Valerian, no longer terastallized, padded over to her. Nomi rejoined Lulu and Zev Harcourt, confident Elisabeth would not be far behind.[break][break]
"Let's go home."[break][break]
