She offered no retaliation to GIDEON GRAVES's description of her distracting nature in the Slateport University library. Only a self-satisfied smirk answered him, one that hid itself in her drink.[break][break]

"Oh, not a professor, no." Her smile tightened slightly as she answered Gunner Graves's query, this subject a less enjoyable one than the last. "I was merely completing some courses I'd left unfinished some time back, for a botany degree. I hadn't had the opportunity to focus on them until recently. Call it a... life's ambition, belatedly fulfilled."[break][break]

It simply took one dead spouse to make room for it. All too happily, she let the conversation move to other subjects.[break][break]

Pride warmed Elisabeth at the way Summer Atreides spoke of her company, and how it thrived under her leadership. There was a part of her, small and often unacknowledged, that wanted Summer to succeed in ways that she knew she wouldn't have in the role of chairwoman for her late husband's company. She wanted to see Summer achieve a dream that Elisabeth had long decided against for herself.[break][break]

"Trinquons," Elisabeth said approvingly, and the mugs clinked together. "Did you know," she continued, holding Summer's stare with an impish smile, "that an old Kalosian wives' tale says it's unlucky to toast without clinking glasses?"[break][break]

She explained further, with a private amusement only the heiress would cotton onto, "The idea behind the custom was some of one drink would intermingle with the other. To ensure no one was intending to poison the other during a business deal."[break][break]

It still amused her as a poisoner, how often people took her out drinking.[break][break]

"Terribly fascinating the way that traditions come to be, no?"

"I'm glad to hear your business was able to survive the fallout from the dome," Gideon responded once Summer Atreides finished her explanation. "Many weren't as lucky, unfortunately."

Even the museum had been affected. Government funding had been funneled to aid organizations and the like, leaving his team scrambling to get by on a shoestring budget. With the dome gone, however, Gideon was hopeful that some form of normalcy would return.

"The Natural History Museum has had to make similar cutbacks because of the dome." His umber gaze swept over their small group before landing on Elisabeth Fiorelli. "But with the Winter Masquerade having been such a huge success, I think we'll soon be back to how things were."

Perhaps better than they were, all things considered.

His eyes remained trained on Elisa as she explained her Kalosian anecdote; he smiled when she finished, dipped his head in acknowledgement when she asked their opinion on whether such things were fascinating or not.

"Indeed, they are." The professor agreed, a thrum of mischief creeping into his voice. "I've been curious - and perhaps you know given your profession - but how did the tradition of kissing under mistletoe come to be?"

Here he shifted in his seat, gaining a few millimeters of space closer to the florist beside him, before casually draping his arm behind Elisa's part of the booth.

"A hemiparasite somehow became a hallmark of holiday romance. I've always wondered why."

Gunner was content to let the other three keep the conversation going as he sipped his beer and listened with intent, his gaze moving back and forth between his companions depending on who was speaking. Casually, he draped his arm on the back of the booth behind Summer, his fingers idly caressing the bare skin of her shoulder.[break][break]

At the mention of mistletoe, Gunner's eyebrows rose into his forehead. He'd spotted Gideon kissing a masked woman under the symbolic plant at the Winter Masquerade. The exchange hadn't been a quick peck either, causing Gunner to wonder if his brother had known the identity of his partner at the time.[break][break]

The younger Graves had a hunch, but one only formed at that moment, sitting at that booth as he watched his brother flirt with Elisabeth Fiorelli.[break][break]

"Speaking of the Winter Masquerade," Gunner said slowly, the beginnings of a mischievous smile curling his lips, "you wore a butterfly mask, didn't you, Elisabeth? I didn't recognize you then, but now that we're talking, it's obvious."[break][break]

Gunner shot Gideon a quick glance that telepathically conveyed, And I saw you with her.

A mistletoe? This was the first that Summer had heard of one. She had only focused on the groups she had been interacting with at the masquerade. When she'd first arrived, she had met Elisabeth Fiorelli at one of the serving tables with a group of minglers, which she hadn't realized included GIDEON GRAVES as well. But that was where she'd met Gunner Graves, after he'd taken a long look at her breasts.[break][break]

After her risque time alone in the depths of the museum with the younger Gunner brother, she had gone to chat with her dear friends Martín del Mar and BARNABY FINCH to get the juicy gossip about their relationship.[break][break]

From a glance at Gunner's face, with his eyebrows raised, Summer began to make an inference or two herself. Perhaps, Elisabeth and Gideon had partaken in this tradition? She snorted into her pint glass, sipping as she spoke.[break][break]

"I wonder how many people met under the mistletoe for a desperate attempt for affection... or truly found something that night," she spoke calmly, raising her eyebrows slightly to show her interest.[break][break]

She only gave Elisabeth a quick glance with a hidden smirk before she spoke again.[break][break]

"I had a tour of the museum exhibits by a handsome man that night. He was quite knowledgeable and made learning quite entertaining. You have quite the place, Mr. Gideon," Summer said calmly and plainly as ever, giving him a kind smile.[break][break]

But of course, her goal was to tease Gunner. Make him turn red, excuse himself to bathroom, choke on his drink. It was all the more fun, wasn't it?

Desperate? Elisabeth's eyebrows raised ever so faintly at her sly, sneaky friend, a tiny scoff escaping her lips at the notion.[break][break]

Cunning, yes. Desperate? Assuredly not.[break][break]

A competitive edge slipped into her voice that had not been there prior as a wicked smile creased her lips, leaning into where GIDEON GRAVES had draped his arm around her as she prepared her retaliatory strike.[break][break]

"Mistletoe were often associated with fertility, due to their inherent progesterone," she said, eyeing Summer Atreides meaningfully. "Not unlike statues of bare-bosomed goddesses worshipped by ancient civilizations."[break][break]

She nonchalantly took a sip of her Winter's Kiss, taking a moment to eye both the complexion of Gunner Graves and that of his cheeky date for the evening. Any sign of obvious discomfort from either would delight her.[break][break]

"There is a longer story associated with the tradition," she amended in a voice loud enough for all to hear if they strained to, but soft enough as if spoken to Gideon alone, "one of a goddess who begged all of creation not to harm her son, only to forget to ask the same of the humble mistletoe. The once-innocent plant was used as a weapon to kill the boy, and his mother's grief-stricken tears transformed the herb into a plant of healing, so that it might never commit such evil again."[break][break]

The somber turn of the story then became lighter as she smiled up at him, their closeness mirroring that of the moments preceding their encounter under the mistletoe. Rather than shy away from it, she drew closer still, emboldened by the alcohol and the thrill of provocation.[break][break]

"Even mortal enemies who meet beneath the mistletoe are now meant to put aside such things, offering a kiss of peace with one another, instead."

There wasn't much that got past someone like Gunner Graves. It came as no surprise to Gideon that he'd seen them together at the Masquerade. However, just like now, they hadn't really tried to hide their attraction on the dance floor.

Had that attraction between him and Elisabeth Fiorelli been a desperate attempt, as Summer Atreides suggested? Or had the bud of something meaningful begun to bloom? Only time would tell.

"Thank you, Summer. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed your time." Oh, if only Gideon knew just how much she'd enjoyed herself, he might not have been thanking her. Still, an appreciative smile creased his lips before his attentions returned to the florist nestled in the crook of his arm.

He listened as she spoke, enthralled by the cadence of her voice and the obvious authority she had over the information. The two on the other side of the booth soon faded from GIDEON GRAVES' attention and a spotlight was cast on Elisabeth Fiorelli, rising to center stage. And what a show she put on.

As Elisa delved deeper into her story an inescapable gravity seemed to draw them closer together. She leaned in as tension built in her tale, and Gideon couldn't help but be reeled in by it all.

"And what if peace isn't something I want?" Alcohol had emboldened him as well, it seemed.

Gunner's snicker at Summer's comment about 'desperate affection' turned into an abrupt coughing fit as he choked on his drink. He hadn't expected her to bring up their rendezvous or even make a reference to it. Beer splashed onto his hands as he frantically tried to put his glass down and recover.[break][break]

So distracted was he that he barely heard Gideon's expressio of gratitude or Elisabeth's commentary on the legend of the mistletoe. Neither did Gunner notice the way his brother and the florist drew closer to each other.[break][break]

"Excuse me," Gunner croaked out once he wrangled the coughs under control. "I'm going to clean up in the bathroom."[break][break]

He slipped out of the booth and headed to the men's room to wash his hands.

Summer opened her mouth to speak, but her attention was caught away from Elisabeth and Gideon's conversation to Gunner as he began to cough. So her plan had worked after all. She tried to hide her amusement as she rested a hand against his back in attempt to help him.[break][break]

"Be careful. You might spill on your clothes," she warned as the beer splashed onto his hands and the table, rapping his back several times with a few forceful slaps.[break][break]

Summer turned to listen, though she was hardly paying attention, as the two across from them spoke to one another. Though as Gunner retreated with the excuse to clean up, she sat there for several moments. Enough for time to drag out before she spoke.[break][break]

"I'm going to check on him. Don't get too cozy, you two..." she said with a smirk, directing her gaze to Elisabeth in particular as she wandered to the bathrooms to... attend to Gunner's needs.

And then, just like that, there were two.[break][break]

The booth felt more intimate for the lack of unnecessary company. A determined gleam twinkled in her eyes, and she reached towards Gideon as if transfixed by his own umber gaze.[break][break]

She moved with an unbothered slowness, drawing closer inch by inch as her fingertips lightly brushed against his cheek -- only to find a stray lock of his dark hair, and tuck it back behind his ear.[break][break]

Her hand withdrew after, but she held his stare, rose-pink lips pulling into a self-satisfied smirk.[break][break]

"Well, then. I'd say you're declaring war."

Gunner Graves' fumbling barely registered on Gideon's radar. The ruckus earned his brother a sidelong glance, enough to check that he'd just simply spilled his drink and not something more serious, before the professor's full attention returned to Elisabeth Fiorelli.

As if in defiance of Summer Atreides's teasing statement, the two continued to cozy up with one another.

Elisa made the first move to finally breach the small space that remained between them. Her fleeting caress along his cheek, brushing against his ear... it was like she'd set fire to every inch of skin she touched. Gideon could feel the heat rise in his face - a shade easily explained away by his alcoholic beverage, if anyone were to speculate.

"I suppose I am." He agreed lowly, the deep tenor of his voice intimately close as he spoke near Elisabeth Fiorelli's ear.

"Will you surrender, then?" Somewhere in their gravitational pull a hand slid its way onto Elisa's knee. "Or go to war with me?"

To her faint amusement, she'd trapped him between herself and the wall: a castled King cornered by a dauntless Queen.[break][break]

"Surrender?" she repeated with incredulous laughter, delight shining in her eyes. "Never that, Dr. Graves."[break][break]

As his hand claimed her knee, she took territory elsewhere.[break][break]

With a languid shrug, the sleeves of her restrictive coat fell away onto the booth's seating to expose her arms and shoulders. The motion sent the notes of her perfume wafting towards him, tumbling down with the curls of her blonde hair as her bun was teased into its own undoing.[break][break]

Free to move as she wished now, uninhibited, she turned towards him to close what little gap remained between them. Her gaze never left his for a moment as her body pressed against his -- her thigh touching against his leg, her chest flush against his arm, her hand finding a gentle grip on his jawline.[break][break]

She could feel the heat radiating from him as she drew near, could see the blush left by both the alcohol's kiss and the flare ignited by her touch, and it evoked a smile unbidden as she bridged this last distance between them.[break][break]

Her lips brushed against his as she murmured, moments before seizing her victory:[break][break]

"I much prefer to win."
