THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

🗺️ SPECIAL HUNT: Zev Harcourt will now be able to encounter and catch a MARSHADOW. you must be able to defeat or prove to the marshadow that you are worthy of training them, but this will be no easy task. they quickly learn you and your pokemon's movements, able to mimic their movements by analyzing or hiding in their shadows.

While ordinarily able to clearly separate work from his personal life, Gavin does not disguise his attentiveness to Tempest Quinn as their small band steps across the Border into the unknown. This place had a hold on his husband he'd not witnessed elsewhere.[break][break]

Still, they're here for a purpose: investigate the Seal.[break][break]

Lugia seems equally unenthusiastic about their return trip; Gavin can feel her PRESSURE against every pull of breath.[break][break]

"Stay together." It's meant more for one than the others. "I've witnessed this place try to separate people before."[break][break]

BARNABY FINCH might know from the mission debriefing that it was Gavin's first official venture into the Border for Rocket's sake; perhaps he could infer, then, that there had been some prior experience of a more personal nature.[break][break]

His gaze flicks to Zev Harcourt.[break][break]

"You have the most experience in this place." While technically that may not be true, Gavin doesn't want to put the pressure on Temp, who already had to contend with his fervor. "Take point."[break][break]

Though Gavin doesn't notice, his shadow moves out of sync as he gestures.

Zev nodded, noting the tension in Cillian Quinn's face and the way he was hovering more than usual at his husband's side. Though the Beast was unfamiliar with this area of the Border, he could easily see the massive seal in the distance, embedded in the middle of a cliff face.[break][break]

They'd have to walk to reach it, but he judged it couldn't be more than a half hour by foot. He started down the rocky path toward it, taking the lead.[break][break]

"The spirits here are aggressive. They'll try to possess your body, kill you, or drain you of blood," Zev warned, releasing several Pokémon to defend against attacks. All were Ghost-types suitable for the group's protection.[break][break]

The unusual movement of shadows was not a new phenomenon for the hitman. Surrounding himself with spectral Pokémon meant he was familiar with the way they inhabited darkness and used it to move around. But since his ghosts did not do so now, and instead floating around them, the erratic movement of the men's shadows across the ground drew his attention.[break][break]

Zev's senses sharpened as a lifetime's worth of training took hold. But he did not say anything, not yet. Without knowing what exactly was wrong, he could not know how to warn the others.

As they passed into the border between life and death, BARNABY FINCH stayed close, as instructed. While Zev Harcourt lead them into the unknown, the admin brought up the rear, consolidating Cillian Quinn and Tempest Quinn strategically to the middle of their group.

Now they just needed to make it to their destination, which sounded like it would be no easy feat.

Possession? Bloodletting?

Separation? But this was Gavin's first time at The Border, according to their records. Hm.

When had Cillian Quinn ventured here outside of ROCKET business? More importantly, why would he do so? The dead clung here like the plague, threatening to drag the living down with them. Not somewhere you'd be without good reason.

It made Barnaby wonder what sort of power there was here to tempt an underboss.

His gaze lingered on the huge seal in the distance. But not for long. No, something else managed to catch his eye.

He could see the shadows of all of his comrades in front of him. He'd almost missed it as they walked - the deviations were so minimal, after all. A lag here, a snag there. Their silhouettes ever so out of synch with the rest of their bodies.

"We might have a problem here." He announced, pausing mid-step. Raising an arm, he slowly panned it right to left, letting the others observe what he'd seen.

"...is that normal for a place like this?"

Cillian Quinn sticks close. It isn't without reason.[break][break]

As soon as they pass the threshold between Hoenn and Border, his eyes lock on the Seal in the distance. Dreamy and trance-like Temp moves ahead. The shadows at their heels warp and twist. [break][break]

A hand, looking almost crumpled like paper, lifts fron the ground. It tries to snatch Temp's ankle.[break][break]

Flame dances along the hand, spreading to frame Temp's entire shadow. It shrieks as it blows away in the wind. [break][break]

A spectral Flareon sits at the side, no presence as he flickers in and out of existence. Yapping, a hollow and echoing sound, it walks over to brush again his previous Trainer's legs. [break][break]

"Huh?" Temp blinks and shakes his head. He hugs himself and glances around, as if confused. Teeth chatter. "Is anyone else cold?" It was quite humid here, so most likely not. [break][break]

The shadows writhe. Not just of the people but the pokemon that had been released. Much like Temp's had, they rise from the ground. Flat and crinkled, like leaves in the wind as they fight against the earth holding them. Only Temp's is absent, having already been killed, and the Flareon's, since he was already dead.

As soon as they cross the threshold, Tempest Quinn is different. Though Gavin maintains a stoic countenance, he sticks close to his husband as Zev Harcourt takes the lead. BARNABY FINCH falls back to guard their rear, and the underboss glances over his shoulder to give the admin a solemn nod of thanks.[break][break]

He's too focused on his partner to notice their shadows, until spectral flames bloom between them.[break][break]

"Shit!"[break][break]

Gavin's alarmed, stepping a few paces away to avoid the flames before he registers that they'd come from a friend. He recognizes the Flareon as one of his husband's fallen from Mt. Pyre.[break][break]

Now he notices their shadows — most concerning of all, the dark shadow cast by a legend's wings. A shadow's shadow, sharp and wicked, turning out of sync with its caster. Gavin's own shadow is missing when he spins around to look for it. Miasma swirls around him and he steps back toward his husband as Temp snaps out of a daze.[break][break]

This was a bad idea.[break][break]

But he can't say it with other ears listening in.[break][break]

"No," he says instead. "I feel normal."[break][break]

It was a little colder, the closer they drew to the cliffside seal, but not teeth-chattering cold. Gavin, whose tolerance for lower temperature is comparatively extreme, doesn't even notice.[break][break]

As Lugia chases off her own shadow, her haunting cry echoing through the air, Gavin spots his own. It mimics him like some sort of alien pretending to be human, sending a chill down his spine. It reminds him too much of the doppelgangers from cyberspace.[break][break]

Hearing BARNABY FINCH's question, he says, "First time I've seen it."

"It's not normal," Zev confirmed, watching the erratic movements of the shadows around them. Even those cast by his Pokémon behaved oddly, zigzagging out of sync with the flying of his ghosts.[break][break]

It was unsettling enough to stir feelings of paranoia, uncertainty, and fear that the Border sowed in spades. Should the men fall prey to the realm's mental and emotional traps, Zev knew other predators would come soon after.[break][break]

They needed clear heads. Now.[break][break]

"Enough of this. Chandelure, cast SPOTLIGHT on all of us, as bright as you can," he ordered.[break][break]

The Luring Pokémon chirped and flew above the group. His purple-blue flames suddenly brightened to an eye-searing degree, casting a wide circle of brilliant illumination upon the four humans and their Pokémon. The unnatural caricatures burned away, leaving behind only the natural shadows beneath their owners.[break][break]

Like a cloud of dust and detritus, the banished shadows swirled ahead of the group, a vortex of darkness. They came together, coalescing into a small, strange Pokémon Zev had never seen before. It wailed an angry challenge, the sound like a death rattle.[break][break]

Then it lunged toward Chandelure, attempting to knock it out of the air with SHADOW PUNCH.

"Hm... not cold, no." Barnaby replied to Tempest Quinn, unaware of the man's slightly off behavior as he was more preoccupied with their shadows.

Yeah, this was definitely not normal.

Barnaby's hand was still held midair, waving back and forth to demonstrate the odd behavior of his shadow, when the ink-dark hand of his silhouette suddenly broke away and grabbed his wrist - tight.

"Shit!" The admin echoed Cillian Quinn, reflexively pulling back from the thing's grip... with little success. Luckily the two Pokémon he'd had out - both Ghost-types - immediately flared at this sign of danger. One pair of SHADOW BALLs later and BARNABY FINCH's silhouette had fled to the corners of a faraway rockface.

A moment later, Zev Harcourt's CHANDELURE was illuminating the area around their group to a blinding degree. An ingenious move, as it revealed the true culprit behind their possessed shadows.

"Will-o-Wisp," He ordered of his FROSLASS as the shadowy creature made to attack Zev's Pokémon.

Without missing a beat, he then commanded his TYPHLOSION to follow-up with another move. "Hex!"

The Spotlight flares overhead. Shadows return to normal.[break][break]

But for an instant, just long enough for one paying attention to Temp to notice, his shadow still writhes. Not the same as before, the strange creature having already been forced back into a physical shape. His real shadow. It sticks tight in place as it should, still his, but inside... hands pressing upwards and outwards. Icy cold and white, graying. Blackened blood dried and frozen under the nails. Hundreds of them pushing upwards as if his shadow is a barrier.[break][break]

Then it's over.[break][break]

And Temp is just fine.[break][break]

Still shivering; his breaths come out in frosted puffs. But he is clear headed once again.[break][break]

"What the fuck is that thing?" He hisses out. Shifting from foot to foot, he can see how it eyes them four of them. Their pokemon as well. Assessing. Learning. He grits his teeth.[break][break]

A hand goes for the pokeballs on his belt.[break][break]

Instead, he makes a fist.[break][break]

Gavin, who hasn't taken his eyes from Tempest Quinn since they set foot in this accursed place, notes the way his husband's shadow twists and warps even under the spotlight's shine.[break][break]

Smokestack is not the only spirit to aid them. The Crobat is swift enough to be nigh invisible in the chaos, but its CROSS POISON lands just the same. There is no sentimentality between the bat and its former master; it was born and raised in the fires of the Kanto war, its short life one of violence and conquest. As quickly as it had arrived, it fades back into the sepia mists.[break][break]

Their fighting has taken them to the Cliffside Seal, and now even the underboss can feel the chill in the air. The cold makes it hard to focus, even for a son of Circhester, as if some supernatural force were compromising his guard.[break][break]

Freezing RAIN begins to fall as Lugia lets out a haunting cry of warning.

The strange, spectral Pokémon took the brunt of the attacks from the Froslass, Typhlosion, Flareon, and Crobat, wailing like the dead. Though it continued to zip about the battlefield, Zev's trained eye saw the way its body slowed. Exhausted and injured, its reflexes had grown sluggish.[break][break]

"Mismagius, finish this!" he called out, pulling a Tera Orb out of his pocket. The Magical Pokémon trilled as he flew toward the unknown Pokémon, undeterred by the sudden onslaught of freezing rain.[break][break]

Zev pressed the button in the center of the Orb. At once, a bright pink glow wreathed Mismagius, granting him the FAIRY TYPE. With a confident cry, he unleashed a brilliant DAZZLING GLEAM at the hostile Pokémon. It fell to the ground, unmoving.[break][break]

Cautiously, Zev approached the small, prone body. From what he could tell, the creature was simply unconscious, not dead. Curious, he tossed a Pokéball at it to see what would happen. After all, Pokéballs had not worked on the mechanical Pokémon in the world beneath Littleroot Town…[break][break]

It was then that he felt the same chill in the air as the others. His breath condensed as he exhaled and glanced up at the enormous seal embedded into the cliffside. They were so close he could see the details on its broken pieces.

In true Beast fashion, Zev Harcourt was easily able to handle the shadowed threat - and even capture it, too. Barnaby recalled his two Pokémon when it became obvious that the threat had passed. Looking around, he saw they'd ventured nearer to the cliffside.

More importantly, now they were close to the large seal they'd seen earlier. At this proximity, and despite LUGIA's downpour, the fissures that weaved through it were much more apparent.

Gloved fingers ran along rough stone, tracing the deep, moss-covered grooves found on the lower portion of the seal. Barnaby wondered at the meaning of it all - what these symbols represented, why they were here in the border between life and death.

"Anyone know the story behind these seals?" The admin asked, his breath visible in the cold air.

When he went to remove his hand from the seal, the grooves suddenly began to flicker with a golden glow. Simultaneously, a disquieting rumble echoed across their immediate area.

What the fuck was that?

The chill of Lugia's rain is terrible. Yet it isn't anything compared to the chill in the air. It sinks into Temp's bones, makes teeth chatter. He was a child of Hoenn. Of sunny skies and wide oceans. Warm beaches even in winter. This was not weather for someone like him. It makes him feel weak and sluggish. It reminds him of Lugia's Pressure.[break][break]

But he trudges onward. The cliffside shakes when BARNABY FINCH brushes against the Seal. His tongue had been too thick and slow to warn the other. Be careful on touching. The Waterfall Seal burned me.[break][break]

With only experience and mania under his belt, Temp pushes forward.[break][break]

Forward into the darkness.[break][break]

Forward past the hidden entrance he knew would be there.[break][break]

Forward down snowy slopes and into a beast's den.[break][break]

And there is it.[break][break]

"I know you." Temp hisses out when he sees the creature who had plagued him all this time. It rises from a nest, long body sleek and feline. An ancient sword, split in half, make up great fangs. It eyes Temp with some curiosity, head tilted to the side, before it's ears flatten back. A sharp hiss leaves it followed by a rattling roar- it sounds like the shrieking of the dead.[break][break]

Digging claws into the packed ice, it scrapes against the ground as it darts forward. Claws extended and ready to kill.

Able to relax momentarily as Zev Harcourt dispatches the shadowy threat, Gavin shakes his head in reply to BARNABY FINCH.[break][break]

"These symbols resemble no known language."[break][break]

One thing seemed obvious, however: the Seals represented danger. Shattered, whatever they'd once contained was now free to roam the Wilds and perhaps the region beyond.[break][break]

"Careful touching it," he adds, still addressing Barnaby but with a side-glance over at Temp. "It can have adverse affects."[break][break]

More pieces to a puzzle surely fall into place, then.[break][break]

Of course, despite all his promises to take caution in this place, Tempest Quinn breaks ahead of the group. Scowling, Gavin jerks his head toward the entrance to suggest the others follow after. The air is freezing here. Boots not designed to withstand ice and snow struggle down the slope, forcing a cautious creep forward.[break][break]

Gavin, too, recognizes the beast from Dahlia's Otome route.[break][break]

That doesn't matter to him, for in the next moment the creature has lunged toward his husband with intent in its hateful gaze.[break][break]

"Get back."[break][break]

Whether his snarl is directed to the feline or to his Rocket allies is unclear. Wind buffets them in heavy gales as Lugia tucks her wings to slip behind them, their span snapping open like a sail on the open sea. Though Gavin could tell little about the creature from looking at it, that it could be an Ice-type seems probable. Scarred fingertips press against his TERA ORB.[break][break]

Gray crystals crackle along the surface of Lugia's dark visage, reflecting the white of the snow in the sharpness of STEEL.[break][break]

A TERA BLAST slams into the enraged spirit, knocking it aside... but the agile cat is quick to contort and land on its paws, claws leaving deep furrows in the ice as it lunges anew.
