Even the sun has to clock out eventually, and as the last light of the day stretches across the park so too do the last pens, buttons, and business cards stretch across the stalls. One by one tents are disassembled and tables folded together, falling with the night.

Locke stared at the check on his table. Amor Rose's signature decorated the bottom of the slip of paper, but other than that it was entirely empty.

Carte blanche.

A true blank check.

Mr. Rose had said they could take no less than a million, and no more than thirty million, as if that wasn't such a ridiculous range of money the courier could hardly visualize it. They'd practiced writing out random amounts on a napkin, but every time they got to the fourth zero their hand would shake too much to finish neatly, every number ending in a mess of anxious scribbles.

Between one million and thirty million…

Locke sighed, locking the still-blank check safely away in their desk for another day.

Locke was, as usual, behind the rest of the region when it came to this kind of stuff.

A small detour to avoid a road blockage had led him to an odd sight-a glass-like crystal about the size of a softball embedded in a small crater, likely of its own making. It reminded him a bit of the mega shard veins that had appeared a couple years ago, before the majority of them had been excavated and processed into the stones most everyone else used now.

This formation lacked the multi-colored swirls of mega shards, however. Instead its many facets gleamed in various shades of orange-not unlike a fire stone-and radiated enough heat to melt the snow in a decently-sized radius around it.

Tera shards, their mind provided from some passing headline.

Excitement kept Locke warm despite the cold as he stepped out into the garden-his garden. It was much too late in the winter season to try and plant anything now, but that didn't mean there wasn't any work to be done!

Leva-Leva was already hard at work slashing at the overgrown grass with her Leaf Blades, sending loose blades falling every which way around the Leavanny, which Go-Go was more than happy to clean up. The Skiddo greeted his trainer with a cheery bleat between mouthfuls of grass, and Locke gave both his Pokémon an appreciative pat as he passed.

Reaching the very end of the property, marked by a rotted and barely-standing wooden fence, the courier marked down where their yard tape ended with a giddy feeling. So much space to work with, so many possibilities…

Locke's sides were beginning to hurt now, stabbing at them with every stray giggle and snort as Lottie struggled to guide them to an empty seat. They collapsed together into one side of the booth, and it took a sneaky Telekinesis from the disguised legendary to finally disentangle the two.

The table was pleasantly cool against his flushed face, so he left it there while a mix of his own and Latias' affection bloomed in his chest like the flowers outside.

"Is that one all filled?" Locke asked one of his Indeedee, who was just finishing the knot on another bag of trash. Fran-Fran looked up with a satisfied smiled, nodding as she pulled out a fresh one.

"Great! I'll take these out then," they said, picking up two from the pile and nudging the front door open with their foot. "Let Mister-Mister know this room's done, alright?"

Isaac's confidence eased Locke's anxieties about returning to the house, replacing it with a buzz of excitement for the opportunities available to him now. Already he was imagining the kitchen he'd escaped through the first time and all the fresh, hot meals he could finally make again; the garden restored and so overflowing with berries and vegetables he'd have to offload the extras on friends; sleeping in a proper bed in his own room...

But there were still quite a few steps to go before they could reach those dreams, and from the dejected shake of Mister-Mister's head it seemed they wouldn't be easy to overcome.

Locke finally stepped out on stage again, still notably alone as they approached the panel of buttons, accentuated by a lone drum roll that steadily built the crowd's anticipation.

They swiftly drew their cape to cover themselves and the buttons, disappearing in a flash of light which just as quickly faded to reveal a shimmering white Togekiss in place of her trainer. The spotlight came to life on the other side of the field where Locke now stood, announcing the pair's answer as the fairy pressed down the corresponding button.

The Ally Switch seemed to go over well with the audience, earning plenty of ooo's and aaa's from the children as the disguised Latias soared above the crowd, though falling a little short coming on the heels of Martín del Mar magic act. A few of the parent judges were muttering among themselves, however, and eventually one woman stood to address the masked man.

"Sir, I don't think your Pokémon quite meets the contest's restrictions…"

"Ah, it's only an illusion!" he frantically assured the mother. "And part of our act! A little guessing game for everyone!"

With the excuses made, Locke turned to face the audience again, clearing his throat before addressing the children present.
