When the snow starts growling, revealing a Glaceon that swiftly kicks Locke, Mars does no more than watch. See, he may care about the courier, be concerned about them and all, but as he sees it, a pokémon is something that can easily be dealt with, while the cold weather is not. Sure, Mars knows just how dangerous a Glaceon can be: it had been his first pokémon and his own Melpomene can be vicious when the situation demands it. But still! De-de clearly has this handled, doesn’t she?

And so is that the situation is dealt with, and when Locke calls the Glaceon ‘case in point’, Mars looks at him as if having no idea what he means. He just sighs, unzipping his jacket and reaching into its pockets to retrieve his wallet, phone, keys, and whatever else there might be.

”Here, I have a sweater anyway.” The jacket is offered just like that. It’s probably too big, but at least it’s not heavy, and it should keep Locke warm enough if he were to decide to take it.

While all this happens, the Frigibax’s attention is drawn towards another nearby pokémon, this time not fearful but curious. It’s no more than a small Bergmite, after all, and soon enough the pair of ice types seem to be getting along. Dollar stays by Mars’ side through it all, watching the scene with curiosity.

99943 METENO had been successfully teleported away from Hoenn. Crisis averted! The world had been saved! Most people would take the following days to celebrate and relish in the wonder that is surviving to live another day. People like Mars and kyle lopez don’t get to have such luxuries. Or, maybe it’s just that they don’t want them.

There’s too much left to do.
[break][break]
One crisis averted just means having to prepare for the next, because while most people may be willingly ignorant of it, the fact is that as long as the DRK TRIAD exists, they’ll likely try to destroy Hoenn again. Team Rocket, League, even those who claim to believe in the foolish lie that is neutrality… the one thing they all have in common is that the grand majority of them don’t want to die.

And so, here he is, one of Team Rocket’s underbosses meeting Hoenn’s champion near the peak of Mount Pyre (not that Kyle knows about that part, of course). All because Martín del Mar, POG Bank’s CEO, had publicly promised he’d do everything in his power to make Hoenn a better place and had actually meant it.

Everything in his power means something much different now that the Unown’s blessings are with him, and it’s the Unown that speak to him of the champion’s presence long before Mars reaches his side – one of them spying on him from up above. An Unown-H. The same one that levitates next to Mars when he returns Kyle’s casual wave.

”Kyle. I swear there’s even more fog than usual around here these days.” A small and subtle change compared to everything else that has happened to Mount Pyre. The rift is proof of that. ”As good a day as any to do this, though. Ready?”

Curse BARNABY FINCH and his stupidly distracting handsome face. But, like… also not? Especially given the fact that he steps closer, his intent being all too obvious even if Mars chooses to ignore it. He plays along (for now, at least), smirking at his partner’s words while eyes of gold meet those as cobalt as the sea. All that’s left is to seal this truce of theirs with a kiss–

Ashley Shepard and Eris Halla’s words interrupt their exchange, serving as warning for the oncoming assault. With lightning-like reflexes (you can thank his daily training sessions) Mars steps out of most of the snowballs’ trajectory, taking Barnaby with him. His snowboy, however, is not capable of doing the same, and one of Locke Jamison’s snowballs hits its target, further damaging the base.

Cue the metaphorical Die Hard theme (which, by the way, is an amazing holiday song).

”Trésor, I adore you, but it would seem we have other matters to deal with at the moment.” Mars tells Barnaby with a devious smile, only tearing his gaze away when reaching for two of the Luxury Balls at his belt. From one, a Mr Rime is released, from the other, the gorgeous Glaceon that has actually been his pokémon for longer than any other.

”Barriers.” Mars instructs the Mr Rime that immediately does as asked, protecting the pair and his snowboy from all projectiles. He then gives Melpomene a nod, looking towards Ashley Shepard, Isaac Merlo, Eris Halla, and their instigator, Locke Jamison.

”So you want war, hm?” The banker grins, accepting this game of theirs. The Glaceon steps forward, her stare much colder than that of her owner. ”Then war you shall have.”

There are no snowballs. Instead, there is a mighty BLIZZARD, and of course, excited by seeing Melpomene act, the Alolan Vulpix runs to her side, increasing the amount of snow with his SNOW WARNING.

It's four versus two. He can't be faulted for calling his pokémon to help, right?

It all seems playful enough, good fun, Mars even joyfully laughs, but they should have known better than to interrupt and then mess with his snowboy. That's just crossing the line.

Over a year ago, after Team Rocket had occupied Sootopolis, Mars had stepped into fern delaney’s shop as Tuesday, identified himself as one of Rocket’s admins, and made him an offer to join the syndicate. He had helped train the forger, and now, after all this time, Fern is the one who stands before him as admin.

But it’s not Tuesday that had called Fern to the secret training facilities beneath Casino Starlight.
[break][break]
The disguise is gone, and instead of the blond, it’s Underboss Martín del Mar who greets him. Here he does not need to hide his identity, for the training facilities are meant only for Team Rocket’s use, and their security is impeccable. As one would expect of the banker, he’s clad in a bespoke and perfectly-tailored suit, yet in his hands there is a tablet at which he glances.

”I call you here because MAGMA records show you’re in possession of a Tera Orb. Since the technology came from Meteno, we don’t know much about the intricacies of their use.” He explains calmly. Amusingly enough, it had been Mars himself who broke into Mossdeep’s Space Center months ago, stealing the first information they obtained about the crystals on the meteor’s surface. ”We’re here to learn more about those intricacies.”

There’s no scientific equipment in sight. In fact, they stand at opposite ends of a pokémon battle arena.

Before calling out his own pokémon, Mars looks at Fern for a moment.

”I believe congratulations are in order, by the way. I have high expectations of you.” There’s a smirk then, marked by a certain pride. His expectations had always been high, after all. They both know that.

”They’re a Paldean pokémon, but I’ve never seen one in Hoenn before. Paldean pokémon are supposedly rare in most regions.”

Does it have to do with how Hoenn changed after the Primal Points were fired or is it really just that this Frigibax is lost?

Whatever the case, it seems friendly enough, and it even bumps its head against Mars’ hand when he reaches for it… Until it sees something in the distance, that is, and its yellow eyes grow wide – panicked. In a rush, it waddles over to hide behind Locke’s Delibird, and it’s then that Mars sees it: a Doublade flying straight towards them, its METAL SOUND ringing through the chill air.

Mars remains calm through it all. He whistles one short note, and in response, the Persian acts without a second thought. It jumps forward, PROTECTING them from the Doublade’s attack before retaliating with swift and effective HIDDEN POWER.

The banker stands, chucks a Luxury Ball towards the Doublade, brushes snow off his clothes, and sighs.

”As I was saying, you’ll catch a cold.”

At least the Frigibax comes out from hiding once the hostile pokémon is dealt with.

I'M HERE TO PLOT WITH EDGY GIRL ♡ I have 2 options for you:

@ichika ✖ Martín del Mar
Obv you've plotted with Mars before so I won't go into all the details about him, but since he's one of Rocket's underbosses, I'm offering him as an option if you want Ichika to meet one of her bosses! IDK how much you've looked into The MAGMA Division, but Mars is one of its directors and it's a great way to plot training threads and what not through its training sector. I'd happily do something like that or an unrelated Rocket mission!

Now, Ceri is my other Rocket character and she's very different from Mars! She's closer to Ichika's age (22) but she's a Toxicologist who is part of Rocket's science department and is currently going to grad school. I think they could be friends! Ceri is very enthusiastic and outgoing, and they could make for a nice contrast. When it comes to Rocket work, I'm open to missions and we could also do MAGMA things with them if you want, but more focused towards helping with Ceri's research, I think.

There is a pen on the table, P.O.G Bank branded as most things in the office are. When Mars takes a seat, he takes the pen by simple instinct, spinning it around expertly with one hand while staring at the underwhelming pile of gifts. He does the mental maths. He clicks the pen; once, then twice.

”You’re saying you think someone took some of the gifts?” It’s not particularly accusatory, he’s careful not to use a word like ’stole’ to make sure it won’t seem that way, but the thought does cross his mind all the same. Surely not, right? Surely someone just moved them to store them somewhere else or something…

Mars is about to ask about it, but it’s at that moment that John’s question to his coworkers gives them an undesired answer.

”Hmm….” Mars glanced up at the ceiling at that moment, knowing security footage could give them their answer. It would be a pain to go through it all, though, and it shouldn’t be done unless absolutely necessary. It would be bad if it seems as if he distrusts his employees to that degree, and so, he chooses the alternative.

”I don’t think someone could leave the floor unnoticed if they took a bunch of those. They must be somewhere around here.”

The Unown levitates by his side as he speaks, but while it stares at Ashley Shepard with the most bored look there can be, its attention is soon drawn towards what wanders a few metres behind him. There, also levitating over the snow, is a pokémon that may just be even more curious than the symbol: a sentient ice cream.

It communicates the sight to Mars, and in turn, he does no more than nod, giving the Unown-? his consent to go inspect this curious creature. Soon enough, a super effective HIDDEN POWER strikes, but Mars simply watches as if this were of no bother to him at all.

”Although I suppose it’s now actually Underboss Del Mar to you, hm?” He corrects then, quirking a brow. A faint smile tugs at his lips, yet his gaze fixes on Ashley. "Looks like we're both making the best out of a bad situation."

Unown have power beyond comprehension. To Mars, that is no understatement. He had been chosen by them, or so many claim, but no matter how deep his own connection with the Symbol Pokémon may be, it’s not like he has every answer. They can move through dimensions, they can create barriers between them, they have knowledge of what’s to come, and are the coding behind entire realities. Even beyond that, when accompanying the DRK TRIAD, they can avatars and their patrons in one blow, bind the will of legendary pokémon, and do so much more…

And yet, despite the fact that he has witnessed all of these things Unown can do, right here and now, as he stared at the Unown-D that had wielded so much power until recently, it does no more than stare back at him.

This really would be much easier if Unown could speak, but alas, they seem determined in communicating solely through terminology that is somehow both complex and vague all at once.

”I understand why you’d join me, but why aren’t you using your power?” Mars muses out loud. He stands at one of the quieter spots of Mount Pyre’s forest, far from the rift that has become as if a tourist attraction despite the League’s warnings (typical Hoenn). The Unown-D levitates right in front of him.

The weight of the responsibilities of both one of Rocket’s underbosses and someone who promised to protect Hoenn, the weight of his own expectations for himself, the weight of his greatest regrets, the weight of insurmountable grief, and above all, the weight of hatred.

There are many heavy burns that fall upon Martín del Mar, especially with their potential end being so near, but tonight of all nights, on this last night before the Meteno meteor reaches the stratosphere, Mars feels light for the first time in a long time.

He feels like he can breathe. He feels at peace.

Will this feeling remain as long as they’re together?
[break][break]
He hopes that will be the case. Mars, who so rarely places his fate in forces beyond his own power, who believes in taking charge of his own destiny, prays. Yes, right here, while holding Barnaby in a tight embrace, a single thought overtakes his heart and mind, a request for every single deity willing to listen:

Don’t let this be the end.

He’ll never tell Barnaby as much, not even when this prayer of his is answered. When that moment comes, he will be glad, but for now, Mars chooses to push the uneasiness away from his heart, reminding himself that they must do everything in their power to make it through what’s to come. Seriously? That had taken a lot of work. Thankfully, the whole snowboy somehow stays upright and isn't completely destroyed in the process, but that sure is going to be a bitch to fix.

He chuckles, returning his hands to his pockets before calmly approaching Barnaby and his own snowboy. Behind them, he can see Pollux approaching a stranger's Lapras as if wanting to play with it, perhaps thinking it's Mars' own. Adorable.
