WELCOME TO AFTERNOON TEA

YOU MAKE IT TO THE TENTH CHALLENGE. There, an older lady stands tall— but she seems fragile in presence. Tired, perhaps. Wizened by experience unseen. The room is brighter than the others, but still dimly lit. Windows have their curtains closed, but the sunlight from outside sneaks in periodically in small claw-like shafts.[break][break]

"welcome to your final challenge." She does not betray her name, but the elegant manner in which she conducts herself may reveal that her station is a privileged one. "when almost all light is reflected, you see white... in the absence of reflected light, you see black... true white and black is almost impossible to witness, unless one comes across the purest of sunlight or the depths of a black hole. i wonder if pokemon types function in similar fashions?"[break][break]

The lady takes a careful step forward before underhand tossing her pokeball. From the red beam, an UNOWN-A emerges. Her other hand procures a FIGY BERRY. The keenest of eyes may witness it glitch ever so briefly. Once. As if tampered with by the threads of time.[break][break]

"you may require one of these to fulfill your task..." The lady says. "do not worry... the effects of this berry are temporary." She goes on to explain the challenge. "my unown will strike with a hidden power... and it will find your pokemon's weakness."

NOTE: this is the final challenge.

Perhaps there is something that lends him strength of spirit, despite the looming threats veiled by darkness.[break][break]

A path had already laid itself out for him; he needed only to follow it. The solution was forthcoming, as if fated. A berry that flickered and glitched, a telling sign reminiscent of the space-time distortions. He would overlook that for now.[break][break]

They might as well have given him all the tools necessary. Among their team, they deliberate on a course of action. The intricacies of the approach vary, but the outcome is the same. It's almost surreal, and yet he couldn't help but smirk with satisfaction at how right it felt, coming down to this.[break][break]

Once more he unleashes Howitzer upon the field.[break][break]

"Howitzer, hit 'em with everything you've got!" Her body was a lambent furnace of fire as a roiling heat built up within, expelled via the mouth in a torrent of wildfire. And yet the room, magicked by the Unown, seemed to snuff out the heat of this inferno. It did not satisfy the conditions of the challenge in and of itself... They would have to do more.[break][break]

But they were setting themselves up for invariable success.[break][break]

And as a bonus, they got to report the Unown; Adrian pulls at his device, hoping to score another entry for the report.[break][break]

When walking into the room of their tenth challenge, his amber gaze is immediately drawn towards the familiar symbol. Inevitably so, the woman who is supposed to be their opponent is temporarily ignored, for the mere sight of the Unown causes six words to overtake Mars’ thoughts. They are as follows:

Be it by coincidence or fate, Adrian Malcolm’s is the entry that had been added to the report when scanning Mars’ own Unown-A, and he’s also the person he finds himself standing next to when discussing the challenge with the rest of their teammates. ”See anything strange?” The words are spoken quietly enough for only the group to hear, even if mostly meant for Yveltal’s avatar since he’s apparently in full “useful but really creepy eyes” mode.

”I don’t trust these people’s Unown. Better keep an eye on that one.” And so he does, even going as far as opening the Unown Report’s app on his phone for the sake of seeing what might happen, all while retrieving his Oricorio’s Luxury Ball from the nearby Rotomi.

Just as they had agreed, he commands the blush-coloured bird to perform a REVELATION DANCE, but his attention is far from being on the challenge. This one falls almost completely on Adrian Malcolm, because Mars won’t take his eyes off the woman and her Unown.

Still, it's out of an almost instinctive concern that he moves closer to BARNABY FINCH, and this time, despite the fact that they’re no longer under the cover of darkness, he takes his hand once more – his next words a whisper meant onto for the journalist:

With its fire all but spent, licks of flame fall out of its muzzle like a fizzling pyre, while Howitzer stares indignantly at the stranger Unown. She recognizes their strange magicks and queer form from her plight-made-exodus. Her hair stands on end, perhaps sensing the shift in atmosphere, but otherwise she plants her feet in the ground and doesn't so much as fidget. Good girl.[break][break]

"Strange? Everything here is weird, you're going to have to be more specific." An aura was nothing more than an aura, and he could only infer certain facts based on its hue. The sort of things he was taught to look for do not appear. If there is a hint, perhaps he is simply ignorant to its meaning, or cannot detect it with his current abilities.[break][break]

Adrian was not so eager to act on suspicion alone, when he ostensibly held the means for clarity, and that was his chiefest reason for not demonstrating the same outward aggression as the rest. Back to the challenge at hand.[break][break]

"Howie, MIMIC the Oricorio's move." Her eyes glint with the fading wisps of flame as she turns to the aviary danseuse, getting a read on their movements. Yet it is not just the pursuit of rehearsing the movements that is important; for perfect mimicry, Howitzer sees something in Oricorio that awakens when the move is performed. A strange utilization of infinity energy that she must imitate.[break][break]

And by the influence of the Figy Berry, she is able.

She is different than the others. Visible, for one. Her face is not one Gavin recognizes, but after all the suspicious things they've seen during their climb it seems to matter little as Gavin stalks into the room. Like Martín del Mar, he is open in his hostility. A flick of the wrist sends his Dhelmise back into the room, and a click of his tongue sees it fade into the shadowy corners of the room.

Like a PHANTOM, it awaits the right moment to apply its dangerous FORCE.

"You've been hunting avatars." The Soiree is fresh in his mind. Though disguised, here, unrecognizable as the Harbinger, Gavin still feels the need to demand, "Why?"

What did they want with Hoenn?

"Quit your games and tell us the truth already. What do you want?"

It wasn't the words themselves that startled Barnaby, but the intensity and venom with which they were spoken. Martín del Mar had never carried himself in this way before, never sounded so unseated. It immediately put Barnaby on edge.

Perhaps that was why he gravitated toward the admin as they climbed to the next floor. It explained, too, why he so willingly took the other's hand without the cover of darkness to hide their intimate concern for one another.

"Alright," Barnaby agreed in a whispered tone, squeezing gently on the hand intertwined with his.

At first that's all he thought he was going to say, but just as Mars started to lean away he quickly added, "Martín, just—" A hitched breath, paired with a worried, almost frightened, look. "Please, don't do anything reckless..."

This was a passing expression. Soon, Barnaby corrected his vulnerability and replaced the look with one of resolute conviction. With his free hand, he withdrew a Premier Ball from his pocket and released one of his most treasured companions, Pepin the EEVEE.

He pointed to Cillian Quinn's vanishing DHELMISE and instructed the diminutive Pokémon on their strategy, "Lend a Helping Hand when it's ready to attack."

Meanwhile, Barnaby hadn't let the UNOWN in the room escape his notice. He recalled Mars' explanations of the unassumingly powerful creatures, a deep foreboding feeling starting to grow in his gut as he did so.

If Temp had any sense, and it was a less tense time, he might have called out his Vaporeon to Celebrate them finally finishing this damned tower.

He chews on nails and thinks over what to do. Something like a chill runs down his spine at t he Unown, at how the woman says temporary.

"Why not try and talk to people? Explain things." Not directed at anyone except the woman; he could understand the aggression and anger come off of everyone else. Temp may have loved to fight, more so than was probably healthy, but you at least tried to work your problems out when you could. Then you could punch people guilt free.

It was a strange thing that this was what would clear the challenge, when Howitzer made no more than an elaborate tackle not unlike its extreme speed, and yet with his eyes he could see it; a strange hue of infinity energy unlike any other he's seen before. Surging with this purified power, Howitzer surges forth and strikes the Unown unimpeded.[break][break]

And with that, they should have cleared the challenge.

Passing as it may be, it’s the worry and fear in BARNABY FINCH’s gaze that draws Mars away from all the turmoil of both his heart and mind, grounding him in the here and now. Here, in this room of the Fleur Tea Atelier. Now, during their final challenge, facing a woman who seems to be connected to those who created the report that seems to have become such a prevalent part of his life.

”I won't.” There’s certainty in his voice, but is that a promise he can keep? Mars long ago stopped being the kind of person who easily gives into impulses: he likes analysing the situations he finds himself in and making careful choices, especially when there’s clear danger before him. Yet, these people, their actions, their secrecy, and everything they have put him through… It all awakens the rage he usually keeps in check, and all too well he remembers his own actions when he and luka chêne had encountered the assassins in that world Cresselia had saved.

He squeezes Barnaby’s hand, taking a deep breath, and for now, he simply watches and listens, waiting for the answers he suspects they won’t get.

There’s never answers, only more and more questions to be raised.
[break][break]
On the battlefield, the Oricorio’s REVELATION DANCE has not ceased thanks to its DANCER ability being activated by Adrian Malcolm's Arcanine's mimicked move. And, as the psychic bird attempt to hit the Unown once more, Mars finds himself thinking back to the woman’s words about sunlight and black holes….

"for all of your concerted efforts... our herald of spring, enamorus is willing to grant you with a springtime blessing... she can teach one of your pokemon how to use the winds of love and hate... if you are so willing." she says as the enamorus joins her side. a thin finger tucks a white curl of hair behind her ear.[break][break]

"go on." The lady waits for your decisions as the Enamorus begins to conjure a cyclone of sakura pink, brimming with affections gained. affections lost.[break][break]

One may wonder whatever else may be bestowed within this wind— should it be trusted.[break][break]

INSTRUCTIONS

READ CAREFULLY EVERY ROUND

Choose one of your Pokemon to learn a free 7TH EVENT MOVE, SPRINGTIDE STORM.
SPRINGTIDE STORM can be used on a LAND FORME SHAYMIN to shift it into SKY FORME SHAYMIN; however, this must be done in a THREAD OF ANY KIND. The move can be used again to reverse the forme.
A SKETCHED version of SPRINGTIDE STORM can not be used to shift Shaymin's forme. After all, Smeargle's versions of legendary/mythical signature moves are inherently weaker and may lack particular elements.
A LAND FORME SHAYMIN changing to SKY FORME will lose access to AROMATHERAPY and HEALING WISH, replacing such moves with AIR SLASH and LEAF STORM. There are circumstances where the SKY FORME may be reverted temporarily (e.g. night time, freezing).

And yet... who does he trust more than the very herald of storms, the Hurricane made flesh? With arms folded, Gavin scans the room for any signs of cameras, recording devices, anything that might compromise the others. Seeing none, he decides, they can always claim they had no idea.

Fingers curl around a beast ball that had been hidden beneath his blazer.

Where most Pokemon appear in a flash of red light, Shadow Lugia emerges from confinement in a swirl of purple-black shadow. The miasma curls around Gavin in turn, a look of reverence in the grey eyes of her disguised chosen.

He takes off the wig; no need for it, now.

With every beat of Lugia's violet wings, the room stirs with wind.

Yet Gavin is tense, poised to attack should something go amiss.

The crashing winds from Lugia seem to snap Temp from whatever daze he had been in.

She glances at the shadow Legend and to his, now de-wigged, fiance- he wanted to go and be by his side. Instead, he remembers the high chance of cameras and grits his teeth. Oh, the sad realities of being a Gym Leader while dating a known terrorist.

"You're Cillian Quinn!" He calls out, and tries to sound convincing. Temp has never been a good actor (or liar). Instead of saying more, he calls out the first pokeball he grabs- which happens to be Captain's.

The Smeargle blinks, confused.

Something snaps within Mars the moment the unfamiliar pokémon enters through the window – the moment the woman speaks its name while congratulating them. He doesn’t care for her congratulations, and admittedly he barely even registers the mention of a reward at first, because this pokémon he has never seen before isn’t as unfamiliar as he had thought at first. Mars had known its name, it’s engraved into his psyche, and as if mocking him, the perfect image of it overtakes his mind when looking at the pokémon.

If there had been even the slightest doubt that these people and their silly tea room challenge are related to the Unown Report, to the “Dark Triad” Lulu Flint had spoken of, it’s dispelled there and then, and Mars reaches for a familiar Luxury Ball while holding tightly onto BARNABY FINCH’s hand – refusing to let go in the face of potential danger.

”What an interesting coincidence that your Herald of Spring’s name is an entry in the Unown Report.” Sarcasm drips off his every word, his gaze only momentarily leaving the woman when Cillian Quinn drops his act and calls forth Lugia. Mars doesn’t have it in him to act surprise, he knows he should just in case of anything, that poor as Tempest Quinn’s acting may be, it’s the right call and a good contingency, but he’s too tense to put on a façade, and all that comes in its place is a sneer.

”Says a lot about how suspicious you are when we’d rather stand on this side.” That comment is actually a contingency, the best he can manage at the time, and it’s spoken just as his dark-feathered Braviary is once again summoned before them.

Boreas flies out with a warlike screech and in crimson flash, at home in the winds summoned by the Guardian of the Seas.

Mars doesn't seem to mind them either, ignoring the way hair is tousled and clothes sway. His golden gaze is fixed on the woman, and he has a single question for her:

”Tell me something: what is the Dark Triad?”

Not like he’s likely to get an answer. Not like she'll tell him all the things he actually wants to know, like the fact that if Enamorus' name is in the report and the Herald of Spring is working for them, does that mean they should distrust all pokémon that are also listed? The names he doesn't recognize? Those he knows well?

But it did fuel his speculation as to the point and purpose of these little trials, the anonymity, and beyond that the actual point of purpose of the would-be assailants.[break][break]

"I would like to offer my Vileplume." It was not a decision he'd made lightly. Part of him had wanted to teach the ability to his newly acquired Shaymin, but he did not see a need to bolster its already formidable abilities. And while Rover had proven itself time and time again, it was important to him that he reward a lifetime ally and friend.[break][break]

After releasing it from his oldest pokeball to date, Adrian subjects the Vileplume to the ENAMORUS' strange tutelage, that it might learn something of the blessings of spring.
