Gavin can feel the eyes on him. Once, he'd reveled in attention. In becoming an infamous terrorist, it was much harder to delight in being recognized in public for worry of legal repercussion, but here...?[break][break]

Well, maybe there were more advantages to this night than a glimpse at the exhibits, after all.[break][break]

Light fractures and glitters off a beautiful LAPRAS ice sculpture in the center of the room, and he feels the chill of it as he pauses nearby to survey the room. Whose eyes were on him? Men and women both, the likes of Ashley Shepard, GIDEON GRAVES, and Elisabeth Fiorelli registering as strangers on account of their masks. Yumi Hasegawa would have been strange to him with or without her disguise, and by chance it's her eye he catches last.[break][break]

May as well have some fun while he waits to see if Tempest Quinn will arrive. Perhaps, he thinks, with a certain thrill, it'll even make him jealous.[break][break]

"Good evening." He takes care not to step on her dress on his approach; it was an eye-catching thing, matched in colour by her mask. "Care for a drink? Perhaps a dance?"

times are tough for someone who hasn't established themselves as a productive member of society. sure, the pay is nice at times, but he has to spend money on shirts when he failed to take into account the localized global warming on hoenn. he really only brought summer outfits when he left home.

when he learned that a party was ongoing, he decides that translates to free food.

fancy wear was one of the things he has fortunately owned. a slick dark coat with a clean, white dress shirt underneath and a tie doesn't particularly make him stand out from the rest, though he supposed that was what the obstagoon mask is for.

he arrives at the table just as Kazimir Wynter leaves. he makes a note that the incineroar mask was one of the smarter people, capitalizing on the money of rich people to get their stomachs full.

though not exactly the most stacked right now, jake does still have knowledge of the fancy foods laid down for them. he picks the most expensive ones to add on his plate regardless of whether he likes the taste or not.

truth be told, priam wasn't much for fancy settings. the suit is stuffy, although he can't deny he looks good as fuck in one, and the people all seemed too uptight to make good conversation with. he's not willing to show that part of him though, since he just adapts to every situation anyways.

not to mention he's with bryan delarosa, so it's all good.

"hell yeah!" he responds. the rambunctious tone accompanies him trying to fix the garchomp mask back on his face. "we can't really pick the locks from the exhibits, but the rooms might be doable."

there will be no pickpocketing though. that's just crude for this type of event.

he snickers. "joking aside, i think i recognize a few people around."

most of them he's seen a lot of times in fancy suits, so it's not hard to decipher which was which. Cillian Quinn comes to mind, which the corviknight mask just gives away.

he takes a piece from bryan's plate with his bare hands and licks it clean. "i didn't take ya as the type of person to get into parties though. how 'bout you? ya havin' fun?"

When the eyes of the blonde man with the Corviknight mask met hers, Yumi felt a smug sense of thrill. Of course someone would notice her splendor right away. She gave Cillian Quinn an amused smile.[break][break]

"Good evening," she greeted him in kind before pointedly sipping on her rosé. Dark eyes glittered with mischief from above the lip of her glass. They also noted the gleam on the man's finger: a wedding band.[break][break]

Was he a married man with wandering hands, then? Or simply looking to alleviate boredom with a young woman until his partner arrived?[break][break]

It didn't matter to Yumi. She wasn't attending with the hope of finding romance. And so her smile widened at his offer. "A dance sounds fun. You get first dibs, then, when we're finally in the ballroom."[break][break]

She glanced around at the growing crowd.[break][break]

"In the meantime, want to walk with me? I want a closer look at the ice sculptures." She offered her arm, expecting him to take it so they could go together.

[attr="class","aurelie_body"]In the short time that it took for Aurelie to find the cloakroom and check her coat there, more and more guests had started pouring into the museum's foyer, until even the expansive, soaring chamber seemed in danger of overflowing with fantastically dressed, happily chattering partygoers. As the guests mingled together, the rich variety of costumes and masks made for a truly stunning display. In particular, Aurelie couldn't help marveling at the women's ensembles and laughing at herself internally for worrying that her own gown was too garish; clearly, Hoennian fashion was far more daring than what she was used to.

She took a moment to admire the rows of splendid ice sculptures lined up throughout the foyer, each of them exquisitely rendered and detailed down to the tiniest facets in faultless, crystal-clear ice. With how warm it's getting in here, I hope they don't melt! the red-haired smith thought. But somehow I can't imagine the museum didn't take precautions against that.

As she stood in contemplation before a glorious sculpture of a winged angel, a bright camera flash went off directly at her. Aurelie had to fight the urge to duck or cover her eyes as a hovering Rotom snapped a couple more photos of her beside the ice sculpture, before whirring away. If there's going to be a lot of that happening, she thought with a sigh, I am going to need a drink. Probably more than one!

Without delay, Aurelie strode over to the tables lavishly laid out with champagne flutes, glasses of wine, and tumblers of liquor and cordial. In the crowded area around the drinks bar, she was obliged to gently maneuver and squirm past a rather attractive quintet, composed of a tall man in a bronze mask and Rotom earpiece (Gunner Graves); a blue-gowned woman with an intriguingly glittery decolletage (Summer Atreides); a dashing older gentleman in a crisp military-styled suit and horned mask (August Black); an ethereal blonde clad in translucent, flowing champagne-colored silk and a butterfly mask (Elisabeth Fiorelli); and a navy-suited man with a simple white domino mask (GIDEON GRAVES). Aurelie hesitated for a moment as the older gentleman made a gracious toast, but with no drink in hand, she hardly felt she could respond in kind.

Instead, the red-haired smith pushed on towards the bar, where another couple, PENELOPE LIVY and CIAN MAHER, were placing their orders. Aurelie paused beside them to pick up a champagne flute from a nearby table. She smiled respectfully at the two, struck especially by the woman's elegant dress and air of authority.

"If you don't mind my saying, I love your gown," Aurelie said lightly but sincerely to PENELOPE LIVY. "I suppose I'm a little biased since I do love the color red, but it really is perfect at a ball like this. You two," she added, gesturing with her champagne flute toward CIAN MAHER as well, "make a beautiful couple."

Tilting her head to one side so that the feathers on her mask fluttered and danced, Aurelie went on, "In Kalos, they call someone who drinks without a toast an alcoholic, so if I may presume..." She lifted her glass and flashed a smile at them. "May I take a moment to wish you both health, success, and joy for the coming season."

With that, she took a long draught of champagne, savoring the flavors of citrus and peaches and faint nuances of spice and chocolate in the expensive, effervescent beverage. Only the best for a grand gala like this, she thought with satisfaction.

"Nuh-uh. Canvas Mask." Corrected the youth as he held a finger to his round, white, featureless mask, glancing down at the tiny Gym leader before slowly pointing with said fingers towards a plaque put upon a wall over an arched entrance. "But yeaup. I lent'em all the bugs in the insectorium."

Few trainers had every insectoid in the known Hoennian pokedex— fewer yet as well domesticated as Doug, or so he boasted to himself in his head, trying to keep his spirits high.

Things still weren't great yet, even after the Meteor— but he couldn't let that get him down. Not in front of the public, and specially not in front of Er— Rosmontis. She had enough problems as it was.

"Wanna check it out later? Think I saw diner at it on the agenda, but we could probably sneak inside early." He offered, noting how nervous she looked. Maybe a moment away from the limelight might help?

He'd only come because PENELOPE LIVY covered it in one of her press releases addressing recent events and those upcoming. His attire is nothing special, though Derek walks up into the venue with a certainty about his every move. Like he belongs.

At least until he realizes his mask looks so much worse than what those around him are wearing. It's lowkey humiliating. A chill crawls up his spine, feeling as though he just entered ICEFALL CAVE as he enters the main lobby. The gym leader doesn't afford much of a greeting to anyone until he finds himself some liquid courage in the form of an azalea cocktail.

Those enjoying the anonymity might have their spirits soured by Derek's blatant disregard, but he feels much better for it. The shiny Beldum at his side acts as a chaperone, keeping a view on Derek's surroundings while he was free to indulge himself in whatever manner he chose to...

Kyrenai had taken it upon herself to arrive in style; as seemed befitting of her first public appearance ever since arriving in Hoenn. A moment to address the power of the family name she carried, and flaunt the family's charity as well. Even though her brother GABRIEL BLACK , and her cousin URIAH BLACK had funded the event through the Akura Company, she'd opted to use her private funds under their collective name as well. The more the merrier, and she doubted anyone would object to it.

She'd arrived early, before the councilwoman and her date, the white stretch limousine mayhaps a tad bit too bombastic, but it did exactly what she had hoped it would. Attract all the attention, even if it was for a short while. It'd give her a sense of what to keep in mind when the councilwoman would arrive. Assisted by an aide, Kyrenai exited the limo dressed in a tight-fitting, off-the-shoulder crimson gown, her mask almost as vibrant as her sleek, red hair. She smiles at the cameras turning her way, humouring a handful of reporters as they call for her attention. Yet all they get from her is kind words towards velda glaus and the House of Glaus, and a riddled reply at her identity before she slips away into the venue.

A flute of champagne has already been claimed by the time PENELOPE LIVY and CIAN MAHER arrive, and she watches closely as they make their way to the bar to order. With Gunner Graves having taken to another group, she figures a brief appearance might be reassuring after recent events. Though she does not seem to be the only one wishing to give the couple a brief greeting; another woman in an equally sparkly red dress approaches them from the other side. She only arrives by the time the other is making a toast.

"Make that two wishing you health and fortune," Kyrenai chimes in after Aurelie Lefevre , as smoothly as one possibly can, her flute of champagne raised in good spirits. "And mayhaps also to the young lady making the toast?" she regards her with a welcome smile, turning it towards Penny and Cian as well. "Hope all is according to wish?"

No, you should really do this. A change of pace entirely out of your comfort zone will do you wonders.

For a moment she was honestly contemplating why she was still listening to her therapist at this point. Sure, things had somewhat improved compared to a few months ago, and yes, the Masquerade had seemed like a great idea at first, but now she was wandering the crowded venue alone, she was having second thoughts. Only pluspoint at the moment was the fact she got to put this dress to good use. Big minus was the fact her glass was screaming for a refill, and she had neither the guts nor the will to brave the crowd at the bar right now.

And having left Spica at home for the first time ever, she was now doomed to find her own entertainment. So she'd just been checking out all the ice sculptures instead, absent-mindedly toying with the intricate chain accessory around her arm, sporting a rather curious symbol around the small diamond in the middle. She wasn't supposed to be wearing it, but she knew deep down her mother would've wanted her to if she knew where she was tonight.

Even if the invitation hadn’t found its way to him, there was all likelihood that he would’ve taken one for himself and shown up regardless. Fortunately, he does not need to force his presence on anyone.[break][break]

A wide portal opens up just outside of the museum and per usual when traveling by way of PHANTOM FORCE, Fern steps through the opening. However, this is an occasion that demands flair, and perhaps a little panache as well, so as he does so, a hand passes through the short, dark swish of his hair, and he makes sure that the velvety green cape he wears over his attire sweeps out with ostentatious flourish. Just to make sure it shows off the diamond-patterned interior as well.[break][break]

Though his mask is not in the shape of a dragapult’s plane-shaped head, the glittering design obviously takes inspiration from the ghost-dragon in color scheme. As do the tasseled accents of his outfit from the tall cuffs of his shirt, to the bows dotting the back of his heeled boots.[break][break]

Despite his proclivity for mingling, he is on a mission at present–having arrived after his own date. So rather than stop to dally and chat with those he thinks he might recognize, Fern threads the crowd in search of jayden cross . Though he does stop at the bar to collect a Manhattan before continuing.[break][break]

Just before he locks in on his date, Fern spots Yumi Hasegawa , and it is undoubtedly her– who else would it be, looking so elegantly put together? His hand lifts to hail her in greeting, but it seems she’s very obviously preoccupied. Whether she notices him there or not, he’ll find her later to trade observations, perhaps. If it’s in the cards.[break][break]

Boosted by his heels, though still needing to stretch up just a bit, he leans up over his date’s shoulder as he taps the other with his free hand. “Fancy seeing you here, Michail,” he chirps, a pleased smile curling at the corners of his mouth as he repeats the greeting he often used when they first met.[break][break]

Fern steps back then, hand lifting to tuck a strand of hair away behind an ear. It’s not in its usual, pin-straight style, but rather slightly wave with a loose braid over the crown of his head pulling some of the hair away from his mask. His eyes are bright behind said mask. “Took me a minute to find you. I was worried we might be doomed to be ships in the night.” A joke, of course. They would’ve found him no matter how crowded.[break][break]

Against all odds, Caleb had a date.[break][break]
When @rosie had invited him to attend the winter masquerade, Caleb had been pleasantly surprised. He’d reconnected with the woman recently, at a League government-run training seminar in preparation for the oncoming apocalypse, and it had been...well, strange to say the least. But also nice. Not only was Rosie more gorgeous than he remembered, but they had both been through hell in Kanto...and as it was exceedingly rare to find someone else who had defected from Kanto Rocket, Caleb had, admittedly, latched onto the opportunity to bond with someone who had.[break][break]
Caleb entered the elaborately decorated museum, the interior reminding him of Icefall Cave what with the wintery decorations mixed with the marble structures and mineral exhibit displays. He had Rosie on his arm, dressed in a pristine white suit he’d spent at least two paychecks worth of money on (thanks Tam Fawley), gold tie, and a white and gold wolf-themed mask. He’d been sure to show Hailee Jacobs a picture of Rosie’s dress so that he could make a decent attempt at stylishly matching her. Hailee could always be relied upon when it came to fashion sense. Which was great because Caleb had absolutely no idea about any of it.[break][break]
"Of course," he replied to Rosie when she mentioned feeling grateful for his presence. "Thanks for inviting me." He was grateful too...he'd had a string of bad luck lately (well, always) when it came to dating, so he was glad for the opportunity to show up to a fancy event with someone who wasn't just a coworker.[break][break]
"Listen, I’d introduce you to a bunch of folks, but honestly, it’s going to be a pain in the ass figuring out who everybody is." Why couldn’t this have just been a regular party, why did it have to be all mysterious? Caleb didn’t find the masking gimmick particularly enjoyable, but, well, he might as well make the best of it.[break][break]
As he surveyed the wintery-themed decorations and ice sculptures, Caleb wondered vaguely if Zev Harcourt would be here, finding it difficult to imagine his brother enjoying himself at such a large social gathering. Then again, there were surely plenty of Rockets in attendance, under their various false identities. Caleb knew well that the criminal organization had its own inner workings and political dramas. Who knew what tonight would end up meaning for those in attendance.[break][break]
"Shall we get a drink?" he asked Rosie, beginning to lead her in the direction of the bar.

Winter Masquerade

Girard was well-accustomed to fancy galas, as he had attended his fair share of them in Galar in his youth. Dressed in an elegantly tailored forest-green suit, brown shoes, a copper tie that matched his eyes, and a gold mask adorned with lush green leaves, he stood out against the wintery backdrop as the lone, lingering memory of Autumn amidst the turning of the season. Mortimer stood dutifully beside him, ready to do as his master commanded.[break][break]
Girard leaned casually against a stately marble pillar, surveying the people around him, trying to guess at who they all might be. Girard had made a career out of observation, priding himself on his ability to discern more than most, and it was likely due to a lifetime of practice that he was able to pick out a woman from the crowd who reminded him very much of Elisabeth Fiorelli. She was standing by two men - one Girard was almost certain was August Black (the silvery hair gave it away, he thought) - and one that he did not recognize, but who carried himself with an air of confidence, as if he owned the place. Perhaps he did, Girard mused. Was that GIDEON GRAVES, the director of the museum? And was he actually someone Elisa had interest in, then? Curious.[break][break]
Yumi Hasegawa’s presence was not lost on Girard - for how could it be anyone but her, her dress reminiscent of a princess attending her own coronation - but he made no move to intervene, for he found it amusing that Cillian Quinn had taken notice of her. Though he was no longer Cillian Quinn, Girard could still, to this day, see vague hints of the man he’d once been underneath the grit. There was a small degree of playfulness there; Girard wondered if the man’s husband would show up later, and what sort of entrance he would make.[break][break]
Beckoning for Mortimer to follow him, Girard made his way over to Elisabeth Fiorelli. "A toast, was it?" he asked smoothly, a glass of champagne appearing as if magically in his own hand. He sipped it lightly, then addressed August Black. "If the lady’s already taken, may I be so bold as to offer myself as a dance or conversation partner?"[break][break]
His eyes sparkled, wondering which man Elisa would choose first.

if someone asked hellebore to make a list of what he thought would be most dangerous, heading straight into icefall cave with no proper gear or protection would be two on the list. the first? going into a masquerade ball with some simple blue dress and mask.

was it silly of him to feel like he was walking right into a lion's den? yes, and he knew it; it was a charity event, nothing more, and that's what kept him from turning around as soon as he arrived and, for lack of better terms, getting the hell out of dodge.

when ends up being harder to do than he had originally thought when he sees the crowd of people, and the sculptures, and the cameras- pretty much everything about it. what had been a plan to- just get out?- turns into a plan to get somewhere further away from the crowd and collect his bearings.
