The call he dreads receiving comes through regardless of his wants.[break][break]
Of course it does.[break][break]
The worry that had nettled him in the days following that strange conversation amplifies as linger what ifs are made manifest as the report is updated with whatever piece of information can be supplied.[break][break]
He’s reluctant to leave , but the call breeds less of a sense of obligation in him and more of a compulsion to help a friend. He stifles the bitter thought that his words could’ve helped if Matias had chosen to listen. But what’s done is done, and Lam reassures his partner that he’ll be back soon, that he’ll keep him posted as much as he can.[break][break]
He just hopes that it’s worth it.[break][break]
"would you condemn others if it meant saving yourself?"[break][break]
The question loops through his head, and he thinks, Matias, what have you gone and done?[break][break]
And he thinks, I’m not the right person for this.[break][break]
But what other choice is there, but to go? [break][break]
When he steps outside, color leeches away from the world under the weight of infrared light. The dark sun bathes everything in muted tones, washes out vibrancy until all that’s left are the darkest blacks, the brightest whites, the muddiest grays.[break][break]
Again: what’ve you gotten yourself into?[break][break]
Though this time, he’s not sure if he’s asking an imagined Matias, or himself.[break][break]
They are no more than a muddled blur in greys and white as they streak through the monotone sky toward Mt. Chimney. On Mallow’s back, Lam is no longer a grassy speck among cloudy down. Instead, he blends in with her feathers, tucked close as he is.[break][break]
When he touches down at the mountain base, Lam looks up toward the peak and dread churns in his stomach. The stretch of DROUGHT leaves his mouth and throat dry. He has half a mind to send his altaria back out and fly to the top.[break][break]
But is there to meet him. And soon, they connect with as well.[break][break]
Drenched in tones of fog and smoke, Lam is not his normal, lighthearted self. There are no jokes that could bring any sense of levity to the moment. Even Noodle is somber when the shinx breaks loose of his ball–sensing the agitation that rolls off of his trainer, and off of his company. His soft illumina glow is pale and barely noticeable.[break][break]
When Ollie defaults to Paxton’s experience, Lam nods his agreement. “Agreed, we’ll follow your lead.” At least for now, he tells himself. Because uncertainty roils in him now, pitching his heartbeat to an uneasy staccato.[break][break]
He’s not the right person for this, or maybe he is. He doesn't know.[break][break]
He doesn’t know what they’re consigning themselves to in this ascension. What other choice is there, though, but to find out?

from the land and the skies, the league responds, muted black and white under the FALSE SUN as they rush to prevent cataclysmic disaster or at the very least contain it.

almost immediately, they are met with the damning realization that MT. CHIMNEY is no longer theirs to tread on. here, they are intruders, pests that have no place in this domain.

even at the base of the mountain, DESOLATE LAND finds them, PRECIPICE BLADES spiking with ill intent forcing them along a path up the mountain less traveled.

hanging high in the sky, what was once serene blue has since been blotched with SOOT as colorless as the FALSE SUN that seems to consume all that is pure. even rayquaza's AIR LOCK proves ineffective, overriden by powers corrupted by nightmares.

but through all the chaos, both from the land and the skies as the area trembles from EARTHQUAKES, GROUDON remains visible. the land titan continues to rise at the top of the mountain, basked in DROUGHT with tendrils of lava drooping off its pulsating primal scales.

as GROUDON lets loose a piercing, guttural ROAR, would be the first to see the telltale signs of what is to come. it echoes the past; failures brought into the light; and paints the future; an ERUPTION is imminent.

time is of the essence.

is nowhere to be seen.

NARRATIVE PROMPTS

here are some prompts to use either in this round or in the thread.


JAGGED PASS
  • jagged pass lives up to its name as PRECIPICE BLADES threaten to impale you before you ever make it to the top. incorporate PRECIPICE BLADES into your posts in some manner.
  • constant EARTHQUAKES threaten to throw you off the side of the mountain. find a way to contend with this hazard.
  • include the sight of one single MAGICAL LEAF in your post; for some reason, this has not been made muted black and white by the FALSE SUN.
  • witness fleeing, though you will be unable to interact with or stop her.

AIRBORNE
  • the FALSE SUN blinds you but it also attempts to strike you with streaks of THUNDER that travel disjointedly, ridden with corrupted power. avoid being struck.
  • SOOT begins to fall, clouding your view and hindering your approach.
  • you get the eerie sense that you're being WATCHED. by what exactly, you aren't too sure.

Totally the wrong time to be thinking of this but Melody wanted to post on social media about not needing a black and white filter. But as soon as she tried to pull out her phone she quickly put it away again as streaks of corrupted lightning flew through the sky towards her.

Noivern just barely managed to dodge it. Arc of electricity spreading out still strike noivern but the main blast was missed. Melody's hair began to fuzz up but it calmed itself as she witnesses rayquaza come into the area and try to LOCK DOWN the area around them. Yet soemthing strange began to occur, the black sun was not removed. In fact it got only stronger as it continued to rain hell fire down upon Melody and Eva. "Eva what's going on?! Is this matias?!"[break][break]

Streaks of lightning attempt to strike at Noivern again and he starts to dodge away. The streaks chase after him and melody wasn't the most adept at flying so she just grabs on for dear life and prays she doesn't fall. [break][break]

They fly into the clouds of soot erupting into the air and hold their breath as she tries to buy time to think of something. [break][break]

"Rayquaza cant remove that sun...its firing at us, we gotta handle that thing first boy." she says patting her noivern on his neck "AIR SLASH!" she orders as the cloud of soot is cleared as noivern channels gusts of winds into his wings and sends them careening towards the electricity strikes chasing him and towards the BLACK SUN. [break][break]

She started being unable to tell if the hairs standing on the back of her neck were from the electricity..or something watching her.

"No response from the flying team. We'll rely on our own visuals until HQ can give us information themselves." he said, turning to the other two. They set him as leader and he takes point with a small nod after a split second of hesitation. It'd been a while since he'd taken the reigns of leadership, but now was not the time to worry about the rust on his limbs. They were trusting him to get them to Matias and out of this safely. He won't let them down. [break][break]

The constant tremors vary from slight shaking to full on EARTHQUAKES. Right now it was fine, but the closer they moved to the top that more precarious that'd be. Either sort ledges or volatile PRECIPICE BLADES. "I'll take the point, Joules can cover from the explosions with PROTECT but it's not foolproof. If either of you have anything that can help keep up grounded from the EARTHQUAKES. The one who takes back can catch the two up front, or help destroy the blades before they get too close to us." The blade up the JAGGED PASS looks like glowing hot thorns. [break][break]

He knew enough to know what to expect, but this wasn't terrain he was an expert with. Joules seemed ready regardless despite the danger they were in. "I'll push out first, wait a few seconds before following me in case it's a particularly bad explosion." he said as he and his Magnezone departed. "Sky Team, Cassidy, Morales, and Logan are moving up the base." he said before his partner pushed up, setting off a powerful FLASH CANON that cuts through the PRECIPICE BLADES threatening to cover the current path up. It sets the blades off but they don't reform too quickly. He pushes forward eyes alert as Joules scans the vicinity before preparing to blast the path forward again. [break][break]

Movement pulled his attention and he turned, rifle up. He sees the back of the woman that had been conspiring with this entire time. "You-!" he blurted, taking a quick shot as retreated. She doesn't trip or stop, the shot missing as she disappeared all too quickly. "Shit,"

The past melds together with the present. Something primal rises from the ash with a false sense of righteousness and assurance. A pang of familiarity bleeds through the dragon’s connection with their chosen. They waste not the time nor energy in trying to battle for supremacy with the FALSE SUN. Without their GREEN ORB, it would be a losing battle. Perhaps their reckoning was coming sooner than planned. Both dragon and rider recognize the imminent danger but refuse to acknowledge a reality in which they lost Hoenn to PRIMAL GROUDON’s Earth-shattering ERUPTION.

’s question pulls Eva out of her stupor. She ferries herself through the storm of emotions to find a glimpse of clarity on the other side. She doesn’t see an Elite Four member, or an idol. Eva sees hope. They’re not alone, and they never will be. Hoenn will prevail. Before she has time to respond, THUNDER cracks down from the sky. The electrified air stirs the dragon into action, pulling Eva away from Melody and into a scramble to dodge the incoming attacks. Rayquaza’s own THUNDER rattles the skies, attempting to intercept the bolts as they descend from their heaven.

The now white dragon’s sharp gaze locks on to the threat that needs to be neutralized. The titan claws their way up the mountain towards their throne where they could undoubtedly witness their apocalypse first hand.

No matter how high the peak, the sky would always be higher, and the God of the Skies would reign supreme.

So it is written, and so it shall be.

Rayquaza’s ROAR challenges the THUNDER itself, echoing off the mountain’s peak to reverberate across Hoenn. It demands attention and submission. The first and last warning it would offer their brethren.

Eva’s stomach curls, knowing all too well that the dragon’s demands would never be met, not by the Volatile. When is nowhere to be seen, it's vengeance that sharpens her own resolve that should be driven by justice. Without reluctance, she accepts Rayquaza’s suggestion.

This peace would be won through war.

Again, he's struck with the thought that it would just be easier to fly the rest of the way. But soon it doesn't quite matter. Taking off would likely prove just as difficult in dodging the sharp spikes of earth that jut up with sudden force and spontaneity.[break][break]

Tiny, but not lacking for boldness, his shinx trails Lam's heels as he follows on the upward climb, doing as instructed and waiting a beat before moving again. When another precipice blade threatens to knock them off the path, Noodle tumbles forward and pulls down a column of THUNDER that makes the rock splinter and shatter into rubble as electricity forks and splits in spidery tendrils of harsh white light.[break][break]

His eyes sting from the brightness, vision fuzzing and spotting before the world comes into focus again. Still washed in monochrome.[break][break]

Because everything is so void of color, the glimmer the flashes in the corner of his vision immediately grabs him. A blot of color as vivid as his hair was before the FALSE SUN sapped the hue away."Wait, was that-"[break][break]

The flicker of verdant green, bright with life, whips up in the air and Lam lunges for it. The color burst catches on his fingertips, threatens to spin up and away, and then his hand closes around it.[break][break]

He teeters for a moment, then settles on his heels again. And when his fist uncurls, it is a viridescent leaf that sits in the open palm of his hand. "Look," he holds the MAGICAL LEAF up, pinched between his thumb and forefinger by the stem. The lightbulb goes off in his brain. "Virizion." Maybe it's here, making the same climb to find someone it doesn't quite wish to give up on, either.[break][break]

It's as if all of the color that's seeped from the world around them is contained right there, in his grasp.[break][break]

[break][break] there is nothing but soot as the FALSE SUN reigns over all of them, purging the land of all color as the league prepares as it's ascent up the mountain.

[break][break] "i can handle the ground," ollie says with a nod, swapping out his dragonite instead for his tyrantrum. river's once vibrant blue scales are blackened into ash as he joins the monochrome landscape, but his ivory teeth gleam as he charges ahead amidst the world's jagged spikes, unleashing a defiant roar.

[break][break] the dragon's ROCK SLIDE launches a substantial slab of earth upward, carving out a convenient pathway for their team to swiftly cross the mountaintop and shield them from the relentless onslaught of EARTHQUAKES.

[break][break] "quick! let's go!"

[break][break] ollie runs across the slab alongside the others, pausing when the PRECIPICE BLADES lean too close. he lets out a sigh of relief as noodles' THUNDER cracks one in two, splintering just in time for him to see the sight of something - or someone - flashing out the corner of his eye. one that shoots.

[break][break] 'is that...?'

[break][break] "who was that?" ollie asks, turning towards after he curses, missing his shot. "do you think - do you think that's who's responsible for all of this?"

[break][break] before he can say more, he sees the glimmer of something GREEN but it's who lunges for it. ollie sees it - clear as day - pinched between his friend's grip.

[break][break] just as the gym leader says, virizion. maybe the grassland pokemon is here too to bring the league's most volatile underneath the sword of justice.

[break][break] "we should hurry," he said, eyes flashing upwards, shaking his head. "before it gets worse."

[break][break] with that, ollie leaps forward, running along the slab as he ascends the mountain, the ordinary bright gold of his ranger cape glimmering a diminished silver underneath this FALSE SUN.

's righteous AIR SLASH cuts into the FALSE SUN, causing black ichor to spill and fall to the earth like molten lava. it splatters into the ground beside , corroding deep into ground with a scent so metallic that it feels wrong, as though it does not belong in this world.

much to their chagrin, nothing happens. the FALSE SUN persists like a stain in the sky that will not disappear, too stubborn and prideful, much like the volatile.

Thankfully a special guest to this event saved Melody just in the nick of time. comes to her aid and swoops in on Rayquaza to save her from the lethal fall, she recoops herself just in the nick of time to recall Noivern into the safety of it's pokeball. "Thanks Eva, any idea what's going on here?" she asks her as Melody pulls out a new pokeball. She had to answer legendary strength with her own powerful arsenal if they stood any chance here. [break][break]



"Meloetta! Let's get to work!" she calls out as Melody had asked for Meloetta to join her for this exact reason, ro assist her with the anomolies that plagued hoenn. She pulls back her raises the pokeball into the air as DYNAMAX ENERGY from the POWER SPOT on MT CHIMNEY and sends out the pokeball as Meloetta emerges and causes the ground to shake as she lands. "Eva let's go handle groudon, maybe if we defeat him the sun will go away!" she says as Meloetta looks towards groudon and Melody notices the strange lump on it's neck. [break][break]

"Max strike! Max air stream!" she orders as Meloetta raises one hand and lowers the other as she claps her hands. From the left, the MAX STRIKE rushed towards groudon and from the right side the AIR STREAM collides into groudon as well. The airstream sought to boost the speed of her allies and clear some of the soot from the area while the max strike aimed to slow down groudon's movements.

"Virizion?! Could it be trying to find Matias?" he asked, glancing back at for a moment before focusing back on the path and the explosions. Virizion had never abandoned Matias, and Paxton thought it to be a result of his conviction. People may not always agree with the man's methods, but he did what he believed for the good of Hoenn. Or, at least, that's what Paxton liked to believe. That's how it'd been in Kanto. Maybe it was projection, but doubting the man they'd come to reason with would only lead to abject failure of this mission. [break][break]

Sweat pools down his back and under his body armor as the oppressive heat from Mt. Chimney, and the dark DESOLATE LAND threaten to bake them all alive. His comms roar to life with only a stuttering static. And as he looked up at the aftermath of the attacks on the strange sun he grunted, yanking him back to safety. He grips the man's arm with one hand, taking in a couple of quick breaths before his hand drops and he nodded his 'thanks'. He's morbidly curious as he watches the liquid quickly eat through the earth. Or was it that the earth itself was being repelled by Groudon's new power? [break][break]

It smells like a strange kind of sweet trash. Metal was never a good sign. The closer they scale the top the more soot drops. Then finally, past the few trees left on the mountain, he can see Groudon in all its fearsome glory. The behemoth looms over, just as void of color as everything else here. Except Virizion. [break][break]

The SOLAR BEAM is sudden, the pulse of heat and white light powerful and destructive. Ollie moves first and Joules soon after. Without an order they move to protect as well, shimmering with MIRROR COAT as they attempt to deflect the attack back to the source. PRECIPICE BLADES encroach and then explode in the wake of the attack's path. [break][break]

The itching and rawness of his throat begins to bother him. "Get ready to move left!" he sputtered through coughs, Joules bobbing as they understood the plan. Instead of directing towards Groudon, they'd use it to clear their path upwards instead. "Lam- got anything for this air?" he asked as he coughed into his elbow.

But surely it’s appeared for a reason. Its bright hue marks a reprieve from the harsh, washed out world around them. Maybe virizion will come to him now, and a part of him half expects the sword to come striding up the pass behind them. Bright and vibrant as the flora he holds.[break][break]

The primal behemoth stretches skyward, massive and imposing as its bulk stretches across his field of vision. Scales dark like starless night, endless nothing save for the cutting slash of white pattern-work. Unreadable scrawl across its hulking form.[break][break]

It is only fitting that they cower in the wake of its SOLAR BEAM, avoiding the photosynthetic blast as it cuts through the shroud of soot and smog.[break][break]

“Yeah, I’ve got it!” Noodle is recalled despite the small cat’s protests, and Poppy soon flutters into the polluted air around them. “Clear it out,” he tells her. The blue-winged pidove stirs the air, despite the weight of the heat that clings to every particle. A wind current pulls across the mountaintop to DEFOG the air and offer them a clean breath.[break][break]

Before the wind settles, Lam pulls free the MAGICAL LEAF again. For a moment, he holds it up–close. As if he’s whispering a prayer, an evening vesper, or a secret shared. A resolute breath–[break][break]

Rayquaza jumps before Eva has the chance to comprehend what is happening. She’s too caught up in her own storm of emotions to recognize the perils of the present. She sees a figure falling and instinctively reaches out with a push from her patron to catch her. A powerful gust of wind pushes into Eva’s waiting arms and she helps her get settled on the dragon’s back.

It’s a shame to go against everything she’s ever practiced to let emotions get in the way of her logic but here she is, convinced Matias is dead but needing to keep it together enough to stop Groudon’s imminent eruption. When Melody poses the question, she stares at her with a rather blank and surprised expression. Eva has no answers. She should, but she doesn’t.

“M-Matias,” is what she manages to blurt out before her throat closes over the rest of the truth she refuses to believe.

Eva holds Melody tight as Rayquaza rolls to barely dodge another THUNDER strike. The ground titan’s refusal to submit resonates as a thrumming pulse of energy beneath them. Rayquaza’s serpentine body tenses and Eva is filled with the overwhelming sense of urgency. The emerald scales rattle and the body beneath them pulses rhythmically. It’s an unmistakable sense of power that crescendos into a persistent echo, like an earthquake.

“Be careful, but end this. We’ll do what we can,” she passes her sentiments on to the dragon through the touch of her bare hand on their burning hide, “Hold on, Melody,” she warns her briefly before she pushes them both off of Rayquaza’s back and into a free fall towards the top of the mountain.

As soon as they are free of their burden, Rayquaza lunges forth in a flash of light. The world around them slows to a crawl and they curl around the emerald SOLAR BEAM to strike at Groudon with EXTREME SPEED.



DELTA STREAM flares to life to buffer their fall and Eva and Melody are safely deposited on the mountain’s rocky slope.

and so they stand—hoenn's CHOSEN FIVE condemned to stop hoenn from ascending into a bright and pure future; as pure as the RED SHARD that currently pulses black through PRIMAL GROUDON.

against the wrath of the elements, they stand strong, PROTECTED by 's MEGA PIDGEOT as attacks pour in from the side. 's MAX STRIKE and AIR STREAM converge on PRIMAL GROUDON, slamming into its sides to disrupt the pouring SOLAR BEAM, but the attacks are not strong enough to stop it.

kept safe by MIRROR COAT, leads, shouting orders through suffocating coughs as the air proves too heavy to contend with. but with 's DEFOG, they will find it a little easier to breathe, soot, debris, and heat clearing enough to allow them a momentary reprieve.

and then comes the impact—RAYQUAZA'S EXTREME SPEED spirals along the curved lines of SOLAR BEAM and right into PRIMAL GROUDON. the land titan isn't able to move in time, too slow to do anything but tilt away, as though protecting its NAPE.

as PRIMAL GROUDON ROARS, the MAGICAL LEAF thrums with a whispered prayer—a sacred promise; and for moments, everything seems to still; soot hangs in the air; the pool of lava engorges but never pops; 's trust and confidence fall over them like a shining coat of armor.

'i think i would feel the desire to save myself, probably.'

but here they stand in defiance, fighting for what is right; what is just.

the MAGICAL LEAF flies.

'but i couldn't do that, no.'

and the call is answered.

as an eruption of PRECIPICE BLADES flood towards like a tsunami, the MAGICAL LEAF fades into shades of green that blurs past with SACRED SWORD. the PRECIPICE BLADES are sliced, falling into pieces before they can find .

VIRIZION stands before them crowned in a whimsical, green trail of MAGICAL LEAVES that defy the FALSE SUN above. the sword of justice regards with a nod before beckoning with an ask.

once again, it has come to the volcano to save its knight, and though it'd succeeded against CHI-YU, VIRIZION knows it cannot do it alone this time. it needs another knight.

on the other end of the mountain, PRECIPICE BLADES threaten to impale and , but again, they are unable to find purchase. the sharp spikes are frozen in place, held back by a powerful PSYCHIC as MEW arrives.

it floats around , greeting the head professor with soft coos as it returns to the same volcano it had appeared at years ago when GROUDON first rampaged.

as LIFE DEW washes over them to keep them safe from the immense heat, MEW claps its paws in assurance that they are not alone. it will be their support against the unstoppable.
