The FALSE SUN oozes and bleeds black as Primal Groudon howls out its rage and pain. The flurry of blows is unyielding and something that connects the two snaps.[break][break]

The Volatile is flung, and Lam watched helplessly as the husk of MATIAS SILPH’s body flops like a mimikyu’s broken disguise against the hard earth. For a moment, a breeze stirs and the air becomes more breathable. Just for a little bit, before the heat swallows everything up again.[break][break]

“Got it!” Lam nods to paxton concordas, teeth gritting as he fixes his attention back onto MATIAS SILPH. There’s an eerie sort of limpness to the gestures he makes—marionette mechanics pulling the sway and turn of his hands, his arms.[break][break]

And though the head ranger tries, there’s no reasoning with a puppet.[break][break]

Not right now.[break][break]

It’s difficult to avoid the tension that climbs as the mount begins to rumble with the warning of eruption. To focus on the task he’s been handed rather than the overwhelming force of nature and the groudon that spurs it. He seeks the clear minded fixation of virizion as it turns back to them, leaving the creature to rayquaza’s exacting judgement.[break][break]

As it returns, slabs of rock jut up from the ground around MATIAS SILPH. The STONE EDGES are blunt and ineffective compared to the lethality of the PRECIPICE BLADES of before, but they do not seek to impale. They shutter up around him, closing around the space as he begins to limply rise again in the air—in suspension.[break][break]

The soft glow of a pokeball pulls Poppy back as ollie morales charges the Volatile, followed close after by Melody Miro, but Lam sends out his decidueye instead. “Try to keep him still and pull him back,” he says, and Artie nods solemnly. The LONG REACH of his skill keeps them at range for the time being—until the dust settles and it feels safe to approached.[break][break]

Cloaked in spectral energy, the archer pulls a bow taut and lets the bind of a SPIRIT SHACKLE toward Matias, intending to tangle him and stop his movements.[break][break]

Lam’s mouth remains snapped shut, lips pressed in a thin line as he fixes a hard stare on the Elite Four member, then two as Melody closes in with more efforts to snap him out of it. His friend. Their friend. But he keeps guard, tense and silently willing Matias to come to and wake up from all of this.[break][break]

Or is he too far gone for that?

The sharp roar of pain bounces off the crumbling cliffs of the mountain and the serpent recoils against the searing pain of Groudon’s SOLAR BEAM. It shakes their hold on Eva enough to release her from its vice grip. The golden rays of the PRIMAL ENERGY putter out and she falls to her hands and knees, choking on the very air she draws power from. The soft coo of MEW sounds like a distant echo, the shouts of Melody Miro, ollie morales, lam logan, and paxton concordas feel so far away. She watches them lunge towards MATIAS SILPH at half speed. The world around her feels like a dream.

Rayquaza’s desire for carnage becomes a distant memory. She finds her way back to her own pillars. It is their greatest divide, the deep fissure that keeps them from true unity. Where Rayquaza accepts peace through war, Eva does not. For the way to peace, is the way of love. There is no greater power on Earth. It conquers all things.

She sees her friends rush in, hell bent on saving someone who has done them all so much wrong. Betrayal, hate, manipulation. Yet, they fight for him.

She’s not the only one who loves him.

Love defies the rules of reason, it is the only exception.

Of all their power combined, it is the most powerful and the most powerless. It gives hope to the hopeless, light to the never ending darkness, life to the lifeless, warmth to the most frigid depths of the soul. It is the only thing that can conquer the most invincible barrier one carries, the impregnable stronghold of the heart. What else can claim such power?

But it can only do so with consent, which is what makes it powerless.

Legions of soldiers may not be able to defeat the titan, but five hopeful souls with love in their hearts could save him.

“Mew,” she doesn’t need to say anything more, her eyes say it all. In a flash, she’s TELEPORTED to him, past the lava and the stones and the fire. DELTA STREAMs pulse out from the golden angel to trap them in a world of their own. She doesn’t scream at him, she doesn’t shout, she doesn’t beg, she only acts on the instinct she knows above all else, the only language she knows to transcend all others.

Eva reaches out to grab a hold of his face and pull him into a kiss, an act designed by nature for when words become superfluous. It’s genuine and kind, without malicious intent or deceit. It’s a truthful proclamation she’s never quite abandoned. It’s, above all else, pure. Despite all the power she’s been given at her fingertips, love still remains the greatest of them all.

With love comes sacrifice, while Rayquaza descends with DRAGON ASCENT in an attempt to cave in the entire volcano and disrupt the looming eruption.

as Melody Miro calls out to her friend, calling back to their promise carved in stone, his hand stops, falling down only to rise again slightly as though wanting to reach out to her outstretched arm, to accept the lifeline she offers because he remembers.

bit by bit, little by little, life returns to the cadaver-like puppet, the words and actions of the CHOSEN FIVE; his FRIENDS; are almost enough to rally him out of the deepest slumber.

PRIMAL ENERGY darkens behind his blinking eyes as STONE EDGES erupt out of the ground to form a safe haven over them right as Eva Morales appears out of her TELEPORT. she holds his face with genuine kindness, kindness he may not deserve but for whatever reason has earned, and kisses him with purity and love to finally pull him back from the ether.

"...eva?"

their safe haven erupts as DRAGON ASCENT claims the volcano.

MOUNT CHIMNEY succumbs to RAYQUAZA'S DRAGON ASCENT, the draconic attack powerful enough to split the volcano. cracks snake along the formidable structure, what was once thought to be immovable now bending to an ancient decree.

the volcano begins to cave in on itself, the deep pool of lava swirling as though being drained into the great depths of hoenn. the drain ditches paxton concordas's SOLROCK carved are for naught, their PSYCHIC not enough to redirect the flow of the lava.

PRIMAL GROUDON'S domain may succumb but the continent pokemon does not. it has made its claim, announced its defiance, and it will see it through to the end. this is a mere setback; after all, what is MOUNT CHIMNEY compared to THE REST OF HOENN?

the pool of lava may sink but it isn't enough to fully stop the ERUPTION. as the FALSE SUN continues to sink, felsic lava soar and spread and rain, threatening the neighboring cities of LAVARIDGE & FALLARBOR.

his hand folds over hers, trembling as he fails to resist PRIMAL GROUDON'S call. it need its AVATAR.

"i'm sorry."

feeling the last bit of control fleeting, he tears himself free from Eva Morales and launches himself into the air, high above the chaos; he catches glimpses of VIRIZION and lam logan, of paxton concordas and ollie morales, and of Melody Miro; he wishes they could forgive him for all he has done, though he knows he does not deserve any of it.

but he never makes it to PRIMAL GROUDON.

the falling form of MATIAS SILPH makes it close only to be snatched out of the air once again, this time by what the party would come to recognize as SOLGALEO. their shapes fall off the side of the volcano.

"primal energy levels are surging due to stress. poisoning is imminent. command center's suggesting to prepare for damage control for mt. chimney's eruption instead. please act accordingly, thanks."

static cuts through the league comms, kyle lopez's voice calling over the chaos of the ERUPTION.

All his friends move in on Matias and as Rayquaza slams into the volcano, he can only hope they make it to him. Under Mt. Chimney in the path of its rushing, bubbling black lava is still different towns that were hopefully getting evacuated. But the situation had changed rapidly, any time he could offer to the civilians below was a blessing. Whatever he could do to mitigate Groudon's- no, Matias' loss of control, the better. [break][break]

He already knew how this would look. How it'd pan out in the court of public opinion. Inside the League, within the Council, it may go even worse. Whatever he could do to minimize the damages from this mess, all the better. He knew what awaited him when they all went back. [break][break]

The FALSE SUN slowly drops further and further out of the sky, crying acidic black lava. Heat waves ripple and distort his vision. He'd give anything for a good rain, but now with that sun in the sky. [break][break]

Matias rises as if answering the call. But it's not Paxton's, but Groudon's. "No-!" he blurts out, as lava rushes out of the crater. His comms roar to life, cutting through previous static to deliver the news, right as Matias is taken by SOLGALEO. Hoenn's Champion has retrieved him. Matias is on the verge of primal poisoning. And heavy lava flows are moving down to Lavaridge and Fallarbor. He lets out his Corviknight, to better assess the situation from above. The ditches were overflowing with ease and Altan spun in wait of orders, unsure how to mitigate. Earthquakes still shake the ground as his partner takes off. "Altan, focus on diverting the flow off main pathways." he ordered, as the Solrock set to work using SOLAR BEAM to try to carve more ditches and ROCK SLIDE to act as temporary walls against the magma.

She watches as suddenly Matias is sent flying into the air. [break][break]

She recognized the solgaleo as kyle lopez's immediately due to it's black sheen and in her heart she feels relieved, the promise they all made in front of the boulder was coming true. Maybe that's what he needed, to show he wasn't alone. [break][break]

She didn't know, kyle was going to know what to do, he could get through to Matias in was she never could. So she defaults to her duties while the champion did something only he could. "Oricorio!" She orders as the two start to to work to redirect the flow of lava away from the citizen's in lavaridge and other nearby residencies to ensure that there wouldn't be any casualties. Now that the threat of Matias was gone she sent out several pokemon at once and instructed them together.

For a fleeting moment, she sees him, the real him behind those crimson eyes. It’s enough to pull him back from the edge, but not enough to keep him there. The strength he boasts is a fallacy, much like the power this Primal Groudon promises him. At his core, he is weak, a slave to the promise of power and the immortality of his ego. Even she can’t call him home. As bright as she shines, as clear as the path may be, she can’t force him to follow it.

“Matias . . .” her eyes beg him not to go, not to give in, not to leave her with an impossible decision. She can feel the noxious tendrils of the PRIMAL ENERGY constricting around him, intoxication imminent. His immortality is fleeting. He may have survived the initial PRIMAL REVERSION, but he wouldn’t survive this.

Maybe that’s why she doesn’t fight it, she doesn’t hold on for dear life. He ascends and she simply watches, her chest tightening into knot after knot as she swallows the pain and turns it into fuel. kyle lopez’s SOLGALEO steals him away as a last ditch effort to save him. She sees it now, he may have been hers, but she was never his home.

Eva trusts the others to protect the cities. To bring an end to this, the titan needed to be neutralized. With or without its avatar, it still remained a threat.

THE SERPENT WILL SINK ITS FANGS
INTO LAND OR SEA

Eva ascends to meet her patron as they rise out of the lava and scraps of what remains of the summit of Mt. Chimney. Somewhere inside the dragon she can feel the MIKADO ORGAN calling to her, stuttering like the dead engine of a car. She pulses with a golden light that matches the shimmering pattern etched into the dragon. She tries to revive the hidden power within, knowing it’s something they’ll need to truly succeed.

SUBMIT

They command, snapping like a whip to curl around their brethren and constrict around them like a chain. Eva stands atop the dragon’s broad skull, a hand stretched forward with burning golden eyes boring into Groudon’s own.

SUBMIT

She repeats, the command echoing across the dissolving landscape with the same resonance as the continuing ERUPTION.

Much as he’d like to follow, he leaves it to kyle lopez. More than likely, he’s better equipped to handle whatever lingering volatility remains. The same can be said of Rauquaza’s continued efforts against Groudon.[break][break]

He looks to virizion again, and nods. “Thanks.” He lifts a hand to rest against the flat of its head for a moment and then both turn to assist mitigating the damage. Thanks to the sword, he’ll be getting home unscathed tonight. All of them will. He can only hope the same can be said for Matias.[break][break]

More STONE EDGES erupt from the earth to help channel the flow of the lava in a bid to deflect it from the towns below.

[break][break] ollie doesn't pretend to know the relationship that his sister holds with this man — or the monster of the man that he's become — but he remembers the last conversation that they held about him. how similar it seemed to the toxic strain of his own with league's favored councilwoman of accountability, PENELOPE LIVY.

[break][break] "she drives me crazy," he'd told her back then. "but i can't help it. i can't leave her alone."

[break][break] and just like that, Eva Morales couldn't leave MATIAS SILPH alone. they couldn't, not like this. they couldn't just leave him to — to die, or whatever —

[break][break] wordless, Eva Morales conveys something stronger than any of them could hope to convey.

[break][break] and yet. it wasn't enough.

[break][break] "matias!" the head ranger's words rise over paxton concordas's devestating no!

[break][break] with a destructive CRACK, the earth rumbles. the mountain caves in on itself, a flood of cascading red and black. the world fills with the scorching smell of burning lava and neverending heat.

[break][break] before the world can truly corrode, true salvation arrives in the form of hoenn's CHAMPION. of course, they should not have been surprised. lam logan speaks first, and ollie answers him with a sigh of relief. "yeah, that's kyle."

[break][break] and thank arceus for that.

[break][break] but then Eva Morales ascends to the sky too, atop her dragon, her body swelled with brilliant gold light. ollie's stomach burns with cinders, worry tearing through his face like the scars that carve through the earth, flooding with fire. but there's no time to waste on things so nonconsequential. there are things to be done.

[break][break] he stands atop his own dragonite, aching to follow, but knowing better. there is a choice to be made here, a choice he must follow.

[break][break] "we need damage control," he says, calling to the remaining three. "divert the flow of lava away from the town for as long you can, and - " briefly, he looks back to lam logan, he glances at his friend and the half-god that has befriended him. "if one of you wants to come, i'm going down to warn them and see if we can get anyone to evacuate."

[break][break] if he can reach at least one person before the burning eclipse falls down from the sky, it will be worth it.

[break][break] his throat is scorched with heat.

[break][break] "let's go."

[break][break] and with that, ollie leads a blazing path out of the sky with his dragonite's EXTREME SPEED, only hoping that they can arrive in time before the world ends.

with its avatar ripped away, PRIMAL GROUDON stands in its domain a sudden stranger, isolated and alone and lost. without its anointed tether to this continent, it is left to fend for itself. even with the corrupted PRIMAL REVERSION at its side, it will soon find itself disconnected from the power it draws from for it was never there to begin with. like any other nightmare, it has no place in reality.

together, paxton concordas, Melody Miro, and lam logan work to minize the chaos of the ERUPTION. they form paths, manipulating the earth the same way groudon's chosen would. HEAD RANGER ollie morales rushes to the neighboring cities of LAVARIDGE and FALLARBOR, warning them of the incoming danger before helping them overcome it. some may question the rangers or even ollie morales himself but the mantle of HEAD RANGER fits perfectly.

at the gratitude lam logan shows VIRIZION, the sword of justice returns in kind. its head lowers to press against the gym leader's palm. later, they'd return home and find a single MAGICAL LEAF in their pocket; both a blessing and a calling. it seems VIRIZION has found itself another knight.

and as for his once significant other, someone matias had promised himself to only to betray them when it proved most convenient, Eva Morales continues to fight for what she believes in—for the good of hoenn and for PEACE.

the prophecy is etched into reality as RAYQUAZA coils itself around PRIMAL GROUDON, ordering it to SUBMIT. with time, it will succeed, but it will not be able to tap into the MIKADO ORGAN; that part remains elusive, present but not yet available.

the ERUPTION continues but not for long, slowing and slowing as MT. CHIMNEY collapses in on itself. oddly, it will not fully crumble back into the earth. it continues to stand as stubborn as THE VOLATILE.

there is no darkness in the ether; it is bright and busy and loud, memories await at every inescapable corner reminding him of successes and failures, of good and bad, and of the life he took for granted.

'i am god,' he had said amidst his descent. he believed it then; a large part of him has always believed it, that he's unkillable, that he's untouchable; and a small part of him still believes it now.

but could he be faulted for believing as much? how else could his descent and ascent be explained? he is the volatile, groudon's chosen, the league's strongest as well as their outcast. he is no god, he realizes, but he might very well be untouchable.

his eyes open, interrupted by the tug out of the ether as SOLGALEO drags him out of the depths and into the ground he so proudly claims as his domain. the dirt tastes warm and ashen, immoral and unjust.

with SOLGALEO looming over him, he blinks, mind and soul heavy as the struggle for control persists. he can feel his patron calling for him, desperate for his aid. but as he looks at the man before him, he remains tethered to none other than—

the same carefree expression matias had always been familiar with is the one he sees. there is no worry as seen from the likes of the first responders, nor panic, anxiety and the like. there is only acceptance of the situation.

"this is a pretty big issue. are you going to ask for forgiveness again?"

he talks calmly, an antithesis of volatility.

there should be no reason to be calm, however. the readings don't lie, and even groudon's avatar, himself, has admitted lapses over the control of his own person. everything was going south, and the obvious solution for the problem remains hidden in plain sight.

this is fine, the champion tells himself. this is how everything usually is.

the pressure in his mind does not alleviate even as SOLGALEO steps away, indicative of groudon's continued control over him, but he has yet to realize as such. his mistake is assuming he's safe, and that he can seek refuge in the champion the same way he always has.

"forgiveness?"

his head shakes, gaze falling.

"there's no coming back from this. i'm not stupid enough to think otherwise, but it doesn't matter anyway."

the markings etched in his skin continue to glow, though they lack the same intensity as before.

"i'll soon be dead, kyle. i can feel it, the primal energy, all of it, and it's too much."

he sees that now; he feels that now; his hubris has led him to this moment, past the tipping point as he nears the end of his existence yet again, except this time, he has no time left to borrow.

death is mercy. kyle may have been lenient on a lot of things, even as far as failing to condemn a serial abuser of the rules to sate his self-indulgence, but he knows when to keep the train wreck from happening and when to let it happen.

"do you think that's what the people want?"

kyle squats down, getting on matias' level on the ground. he doesn't hold the moral high ground for being an accessory, having had a chance to stop this from happening but looking the other way regardless.

"it doesn't matter. i'm here. we do things my way."

he double checks his radio, making sure that nothing is picked up by the frequencies. batteries are casually taken out in front of matias before stuffing them inside his pockets.

"do you really not want a chance for redemption?"
