*kicks down door* I'm necro'ing this thread because I've got a lot of ~feelings~ on this!! I try to keep my names pretty consistent across my characters' rosters, because I feel like it's a fun little touch of characterization that can give a little insight into the trainer naming them!
Victor Haas - A mix of real-world names (Barnaby, Tegan, Serenity) and references to either mythical figures or cryptids/generally odd stuff. For example, his Beeheeyem is named Braxie for the Flatwoods monster of Braxton County, Virginia, and his Xatu is named after the Nazca lines (which, if Ancient Aliens is anything to go off of, are probably extraterrestrial in nature /j)
Honoka kinda-sorta fits the "real-world names" category, but is intentionally a little distinct because it was a Pokemon named by someone else!
Oh, and Notus + Erebos (a Starmie and Lunatone respectively), are a double reference to both Greek deities, and are named as an inversion of the Aesop fable of 'The North Wind and the Sun' (Notus is a representation of the southern winds and Erebos is the Greek personification of darkness. Also, uh, moon 🌚)
Jaakko is also technically a real world name but I named him after a side character in Alan Wake 2 because I can't help myself orz
Eduardo Hisakawa - A couple of real-world names (Delilah, Beau), but the rest are all specific media and historical references. Tsume and Batou are anime references (ultra-specifically, stuff that was airing on Adult Swim circa 2003-2008), Daisuke and Lynch are named after professional wrestlers, Nero + August + Caligula are named after ancient Roman emperors, and the rest are named after a playwright and characters from plays (Blanche and Stella from A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee for the playwright Tennessee Williams, Collins and Angel from Rent).
The dichotomy between what some might consider traditionally masculine interests (professional wrestling, the Roman empire) and a gay playwright + theater is both very intentional and kinda self-indulgent on my part 👌
