One of the monitors began to beep erratically, calling attention to an energy signature out of the norm.[break][break]

"Possibly. Or perhaps a congregation of Pokémon are nearby. This device gives us a baseline reading," Barnaby gestured to the other various pieces of technology. "But these will help narrow it down. That's the idea, anyway, from what the scientists tell me."[break][break]

And when she spoke of her hopes for the birds, he smiled again, disarming in its soft commiseration.[break][break]

"Agreed. That would take some of the pressure off, hm?" But in the back of his mind, BARNABY FINCH doubted their lives would ease anytime soon.[break][break]

With that he stood and began the process of attaching cameras to fastening points, tucking in monitors where Pokémon were less likely to investigate, and the like.[break][break]

Barnaby continued with this work even as he answered Aurelie Lefevre's question, "This book-summoned Articuno is an unknown, as are all the birds. It would be foolish to assume they are simple carbon copies of the ones inhabiting Galar."[break][break]

The admin's voice was even and conversational as he progressed through his explanation.[break][break]

"We would fight it if it came to that, but for now I am content with collecting information first and foremost. They've been quite invasive, anyway, which is information in and of itself. They don't want to be found."[break][break]

He paused to settle a curious eye on his companion.[break][break]

"As far as its level of sentience... who knows? Hoenn's Articuno can apparently communicate with its Avatar, but I haven't heard of that same level of communication with, say, Zapdos and Oscar Clayton."

A hand clasped Barnaby's shoulder, goading a slight, commiserate smile to his lips.[break][break]

For a moment, he idly wondered if Grigori Sokolov was a spiritual man.[break][break]

The enforcer talked of balancing moral and immoral, of the world forgetting as time passed. To the admin, it all sounded rather removed from the reality of their situation. Like watching calamity unfold from above.[break][break]

And then he asked the same of Barnaby.[break][break]

"There is no nuance, Grigori." [break][break]

BARNABY FINCH was not a spiritual man. The highest power he conceded to was his own. Moral and immoral had no place in his theology.[break][break]

"I will try because I want to live. I will fight because I want Hoenn — our Hoenn — to thrive. I will go to war because I want Rocket to rise to power."[break][break]

He was not forceful in his reply. If anything, it was spoken as if to a trusted confidante, softly and with a kind eye.[break][break]

"We're here." They'd reached the inner chamber. "But Zapdos doesn't seem to be around right now. Perfect, actually. We can set up without it pestering us."[break][break]

Sliding his bag onto the floor, Barnaby unzipped it and began to remove the various instruments from within so that they could begin setting up.

Though Howard waved off the suggestion with a laugh, Barnaby regarded him with a serious, though brightened expression. Why couldn't it be a Pokémon? He'd seen crazier things in the years that had passed since coming to Hoenn.[break][break]

"Don't be so dismissive, now, Howard." Barnaby chided amiably while giving the archeologist an encouraging grin. "Have our scientists checked the crystals for signs of organic compounds? Or traces of Infinity Energy, perhaps?"[break][break]

As for the GALARIAN TRIO, well, BARNABY FINCH had other ROCKETs in mind that could help.[break][break]

"Don't worry about the birds. We'll find them. I have some of Rocket's best people looking into it."

Barnaby's eyelids narrowed a marginal amount — imperceivable to ollie morales all the way across the field.[break][break]

Being adept at deflection as he ways, it was painfully obvious when others tried to wriggle away from his questions. Especially when said person assured him that he could ask 'whatever ya want.' Hm. [break][break]

"Isn't this an interview, Ranger Morales?" Barnaby replied innocently enough, still smiling that gorgeous, beaming smile of his.[break][break]

"I question, you answer? And I don't believe I've gotten an answer yet..."[break][break]

While Tofu tried to steady itself on the shaky ground, MELMETAL took a moment to right itself and assume a defensive stance. There was no chasing after the PIKACHU, after all; they were complete opposites when it came to speed. [break][break]

Instead, when Tofu charged forward, vines and foliage aiding in its attack, MELMETAL deployed its SPIKY SHIELD at the last minute, blocking and almost certainly injuring Tofu in the process.[break][break]

MELMETAL wasn't all that impressive, especially considering its lack of battle experience and Barnaby's supposed novice skills as a trainer. That was the act for today, anyway. He wasn't ROCKET Admin Bee here, after all, but HNN Journalist Barnaby Finch.[break][break]

With so many parts to play, he wasn't even sure if there was a real Barnaby anymore, or if his identity was just a muddied mixture of personality traits spun together for optimal effect.[break][break]

"Correct. That's pretty normal though, right?" He replied, all smiles now. There were eyes on them, after all. Pedestrians interested in watching the match, cameras recording for various media outlets. [break][break]

Now that Caleb Harcourt had entangled himself with BARNABY FINCH, he had his own part to play, too. And he better not fuck up.[break][break]

MELMETAL began the match by rushing forward (though it was admittedly more hurried walking than running) and slinging its fist toward Lyra with a THUNDER PUNCH.[break][break]

MELMETAL was fairly self-sufficient when it came to combat, almost as if the creature itself had been made for purely this sort of pursuit. And that suited Barnaby just fine, as he was a bit of a chatterbox in his HNN journalist persona.[break][break]

And yes, it was also a good way to distract opponents gullible enough to give in to conversation.[break][break]

"Dewford! There's been quite a lot going on over there as of late," Barnaby replied in a somewhat concerned tone, obviously referencing the battle at the rift and KYOGRE rampaging around Hoenn's seas. "I hope your family hasn't been too disrupted."[break][break]

And then he asked about Barnaby himself.[break][break]

"Oh, can't you tell?" Spoken with a light hint of a Kalosian accent, more enunciated here for Noel's benefit. "I'm from Kalos. I moved here a few years ago for work, actually."[break][break]

While the two trainers chatted, the ground erupted all around the field, unsteadying MELMETAL and sending it to one knee. It used this position to its advantage, however, and slammed its fist down to cause an EARTHQUAKE.[break][break]

Combat rages all around them to a dizzying degree. It was easy to focus on the colossus in front of them, but out of the corner of his eye Barnaby saw someone go down.[break][break]

Within moments BARNABY FINCH deployed an acrobatic series of movements where he returned his STEELIX and released his GENESECT in its high-speed flight configuration. Barnaby fell a short distance onto the mechanical Pokémon and then directed it downward to land beside Steven Campbell, who laid pathetically face-first in the torrential snow.[break][break]

This was the grunt's first major conflict. Barnaby knew that. And it was becoming apparent to the admin that Steven required more guidance than what he'd been currently receiving over comms.[break][break]

"Get it together." Hopping off the GENESECT, Barnaby crouched beside Steven and reached out to steady him into a sitting position. Time was precious here, but a few seconds spent verifying his wellbeing was a worthwhile investment.[break][break]
