Truth be told, Barnaby wasn't too vested in his success here or in any of his other battles, really. Though Admin Bee was a competent battler, BARNABY FINCH was purportedly lackluster at best. [break][break]

"I didn't take you for a competitive trainer."[break][break]

There was little heat in his voice as he spoke, unlike the inferno that spilled from Lyra's gaping mouth. It was an unexpected attack and, unfortunately, one which MELMETAL could not defend against in time. [break][break]

It groaned in pain as the flames threatened to melt its outer shell. With a prompting shout from Barnaby, however, it slammed its fists down on the ground below, causing an EARTHQUAKE to rock the field. [break][break]

The driving snow threatened to bury them in an icy grave. GENESECT attempted to shield the two ROCKETs, but it was a surprising presence that truly came to their aid: KELDEO. [break][break]

The small but speedy equid skidded to a stop where BARNABY FINCH and Steven Campbell lay prone in a deep drift, offering the men and GENESECRT a HELPING HAND up against the storm.[break][break]

Barnaby was momentarily stunned by its sudden appearance but did not question it in the moment; instead, he grabbed Steven by his upper arm and heaved them onto GENESECT with renewed strength coursing through his body.[break][break]

"Hold on tight!" He warned the younger man before the steel Pokémon took flight. If Steven Campbell were to make it through this ordeal, Barnaby hoped the young ROCKET had good balance, otherwise he might drag them both into an early death.[break][break]

KYUREM's booming tumult of a voice rang out across the barren icelands, with HOOPA's echoed translation a close mirror. Through the freezing air and incessant blizzard Barnaby did his best to try and wrap his head around the prophecy.[break][break]

Some lines felt painfully familiar, while others just left him feeling frustratingly confused. There was little time to dwell on it, however, as the ground began to quake beneath his boots.[break][break]

The earth splintered before them, revealing rocky entrails encrusted with gleaming TERA CRYSTALS. Barnaby couldn't help but think of howard slayte in that moment, as he looked down into the crystalline abyss, and how vehemently the man had considered them a cancer to Hoenn. [break][break]

Suddenly, a golden ring materialized beside him and Steven Campbell and a HOOPA's fist flew out. There was barely enough time to react; reflexively, Barnaby dove downward over Steven, pinning them back onto the snowy ground.[break][break]

MELMETAL was none the wiser to the future attack it would inevitably have to endure; instead, it used the opening provided to knock off another close-quarters strike.[break][break]

This time, tell-tale layers of frost began to rapidly accumulate on one of the giant's metal fists. MELMETAL swung wide this time instead of head-on, attempting to hit POOCHYENA on its side and send it barreling to the opposite end of the field.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Barnaby was checking out kyle lopez in his SYGNA SUIT. The contraptions were popping up more and more lately, especially at the tournament.[break][break]

Hmm... I wonder if I should get one? Barnaby mused, unaware that he'd spent so much PD on the DYNAMAX BAND that he'd have to save for quite awhile to afford it. RIP.[break][break]

The boy was endearing, that much was obvious to Barnaby. And naive, perhaps, but Hoenn would surely beat that out of him in time. For now, he'd settle for simply putting Noel in his place.[break][break]

Especially after the little line about him winning.[break][break]

"Cocky, aren't you?" The journalist replied with a laugh, obviously finding the other's confidence amusing.[break][break]

But perhaps he had reason to be? MELMETAL wasn't exactly looking like the picture of health at the moment. ENERGY BALLS whizzed across the field, striking the iron giant square in the chest and sending it back a few paces.[break][break]

"Hm. Maybe I should buckle down a bit." [break][break]

Hearing that, MELMETAL righted itself and began to rush forward, though it was still slow due to its size.[break][break]

With the field drenched in water, the massive amount of electricity the PIKACHU suddenly expelled was boosted in power. MELMETAL groaned in pain, the sound like a metal beam waning under a heavy load. It almost succumbed.[break][break]

"Finish it!!" Barnaby shouted in encouragement, genuinely wrapped up in the intensity of the battle.[break][break]

With that command MELMETAL slammed its giant fists down once more to cause a MAX QUAKE. Thankfully, it was enough to finally fell the GIGANTAMAXED Tofu.[break][break]

The battle seemed to be at its turning point. With ollie morales utilizing his DYNAMAX BAND, Barnaby figured it was as good a time as any to GIGANTAMAX his own Pokémon.[break][break]

MELMETAL grew to the size of a colossus, ready to take on the PIKACHU on more equal footing. Just in time, too, as water washed over its gargantuan feet, threatening to destabilize it. In retaliation it called forth MAX STEELSPIKE, which sent giant thorns of metal jutting up from the ground and across the field.[break][break]

Their kiss started off slow and sweet, like two tender lovers reconnecting after a long time apart. And perhaps that was exactly what they were.[break][break]

It was what he wanted them to be — in her estimation, at least.[break][break]

But the more they drank each other in, the more fervent their kisses became. Soon Barnaby's hands clutched at the sides of her supple jaw, drawing her into him. In the same movement his body leaned in to where she'd turned, pinning her against the kitchen counter.[break][break]

Eventually he'd pause to breathe in a tapered, needy breath, and press his forehead into hers. [break][break]

"I missed you too." Barnaby whispered back, low and husky and evocative of all the other things that he'd missed, too. He planned to remind her of those and more as the afternoon waned into evening and beyond.

Immediately, BARNABY FINCH was distrustful of the notion. They were putting their wellbeing in the hands of this strange creature — what if it were a trick to get them stranded in the middle of this immense river?[break][break]

What if it wanted to drown them there and add theirs souls to its collection?[break][break]

But in the back of his mind Barnaby was already formulating contingency plans. Some sort of Flying-type would likely help him escape in a pinch.[break][break]

And so they boarded the small boat — after returning their steeds, of course. As they pushed off into the unknown, Barnaby picked up their previous conversation.[break][break]
