It's coming down to the wire, and Gavin's competitive nature inspires stress with the knowledge that others are outperforming him. That he thought he stood a chance against others who actually enjoyed the sport was a product of ego.

Skyler has a distinct advantage over every other competitor, all things considered. Bruises and minor injuries dissipate under the ocean's surface, so whenever a wave comes to slap her down, the consequences are to her pride alone.

What that means is that, in tandem with Skyler's glorious lack of common sense, giving up does not come easy. Or at all.
