Another shift of tending to the strange tree and the legendary Pokemon that remained within the branches and leaves, Yuina was approached by it again in the quiet, the spring breezes brushing through the branches above. It spoke only briefly, a request for another story, something different than last time...[break][break]
Tell me a story of justice and heroism...[break][break]
"I... I don't know that I'm the best one to tell you a story about that... But I'll try, I'm still learning what that is for myself," Yuina spoke quietly first, the idea was there, the concept, but she was still working out in her head what those things meant, how they worked out...[break][break]
"Deep in a forest, a beautiful forest that only belonged to the Pokemon there, three groups of the forest all shared the land and called it home. The normal type Pokemon that lived on the forest floor, in the tree trunks and in their burrows. The bird Pokemon that flew through the air and protected the skies, and the Bug Pokemon that lived in the trees and tended to the flowers."[break][break]
"The bug Pokemon felt that because they took care of the plants and the flowers of the forest that they were more important, that they should rule the skies and the bird Pokemon should move elsewhere, taking their nests out of the Bug's trees and giving them control of the forest. The bugs were many, they had whole hives of their kind, and when they declared war on the birds, the birds were out numbered."[break][break]
"The birds asked for help from below, from the Normal Type Pokemon that lived on the forest floor, for there was no telling how far the bugs would go to expand their territory and upset the delicate balance of the ecosystem they had all created together."[break][break]
"The war broke out in full force, the only hope was for the birds and the animals to work together to take down the Queen Bug and her men, but their forces were formidable. One Meowth was flying through the air with a Pidgeotto, trying to work on a path towards the main bug's forces when there was a terrible buzzing and screech in the air above them. A Beedrill fell down through the air, injured, and knocked the Meowth off of the Pidgeotto that was carrying her. And for that moment, the Beedrill and the Meowth fell through the air together, far above the forest floor, and would surely die from the fall."[break][break]
"But the Meowth realized, she wasn't trying to hurt anyone, in fact, the Beedrill hadn't even attacked them, so she reached out to the bug to try and save him, when her Pidgeotto friend caught her in the air within its talons. The Pidgeotto's claws dug into her fur as she hung there in the air, holding onto the Beedrill, she didn't want to let go to save herself as blood started to drip from her sides... It wasn't fair, it wasn't as if this Beedrill was the one that started the war, nor had she intended on joining... They were just small pieces in the over all puzzle... Would she serve justice, letting him die? Dropping him and moving on to the next bug that opposed them? He wasn't even trying to fight, wasn't trying to sting her with his stingers...,"[break][break]
"Bleeding from the Pidgeotto's talons that dug into her sides, the Meowth held onto the Beedrill still, trying to hold on for long enough that they could get close to a tree, but in the moment that she would have been able to let the Beedrill go to safety, he flew off, having not been so injured that his wings were damaged..."[break][break]
"Sitting on the tree branch herself no, released from the talons that dug into her, her sides clawed through and marred with blood at her sacrifice... The Meowth wondered... where the justice was in her heroism... And if it was worth it..."

TALES BENEATH THE DYNA TREE (LEAGUE)
POSTED ON Feb 16, 2024 22:38:24 GMT
Ettie Avatar
Ettie has never really told stories. Or at least, she had never told stories in the same formats as the almost fairytale-esque orations many of the others who came and went from the tree told. It was just as fascinating for her, as it must've been for the Calyrex, to hear the different tales people had to say.

Though, at the same time, there was... A certain unease, in being around the Calyrex. It wasn't their fault - but to see the lapine pokemon, it leaves her thinking of that 20 year dream. That dream that always seems to make her heart ache. The fact that the Calyrex seems to recognize her, even if only faintly, doesn't help either - but...

... When one of the requests is about fairies and steel, a thought occurs to her. A story that she could tell, even if she wasn't likely to be the best at it.

Thus, when there's a chance to step forth, she does - showing a shiny Doublade, resting in its sheathes. "Is Scarlet!" Ettie speaks, smiling bright. "Is... Not wolf, or Flock... But is still Pack. Scarlet is... Claws for Ettie. Can fight, loves play-fight, but... Likes when held in fights." She recognizes that Scarlet is a bit intense in their love for fighting - but she also knows that it doesn't have any inherent ill will, either.

"Ettie meet Scarlet in... Border! Is... Not-here? Not-Hoenn? But can go to!" The child crouches down to pick up a fallen stick, that she uses to scratch in the earth - trying to draw, to show the Calyrex what she means. Drawing a mountain, with some strange 'rip' in the air above it.

(Haru, though, lingers near - the Delphox happy to use a more psychic form of communication to clarify Ettie's words.)

"Rift, up in mountain - Pyre - that way!" Ettie points with her free hand. "Pyre is... Where dead rest underneath. Border is... Where-go after? Ettie thinks? Lots-ghosts. Can be scary, and dangerous. But also is pretty." She nods a bit, casting a smile back to Calyrex. "Ettie go to Border with friends! , , ! One day we find... Big human-pokemon-ghost-Pack, going somewhere! Ettie not-know where, but we make friends, and follow!" It had been a fascinating experience for Ettie, really.

"While moving... Ettie find pretty Doublade. Doublade was Scarlet! Scarlet was waiting long time, was bored, wanted play! So Ettie let Scarlet play. Scarlet play-fight with friends, have fun together! Though..." Ettie's expression was a little sheepish now, as she mused "Friends thought Scarlet want hurt, but No. Scarlet just wanted play-fight." Even if Scarlet was one to play a bit rough, sometimes.

"After playfight... Ettie take Scarlet with, as friends!" The child grins bright with this - she was happy to have met Scarlet - even a full year after. "Scarlet like Ruffian - thinks about fights lots. Also sleeps lots when not-fight, wakes up when playfight or fight."

"Scarlet likes when held... And when Ettie hold, Ettie... Shares self?" Possession was a word Ettie knew - but she wasn't sure if it was quite right. Because it sounded as though when someone is possessed, their 'self' - their body - isn't being shared. But Ettie and Scarlet had found that in sharing, things went all the more smoothly for the both of them. "Scarlet helps swing, protects Ettie. Ettie helps move, and gives play!" A fair trade!

"Ettie want-learn more, but... Not lots humans share-self. Says is dangerous, but... Ettie trusts Scarlet. Is Pack." There was only so much she could learn about wielding Scarlet, from letting Scarlet handle the swings, after all. But if she did get better at this... Then they could work together better, right?

Was this what people meant, when they say 'here's to another year'?

"i spent so long begging him to be my end. i never wanted it to be by his hand, but i wanted him to take me to it. take me to the shore, where the fires turned all the world to coals, and just let me walk until i was nothing.

"i let him turn me into nothing.

"it's still hazy. the fight. i never asked myself what i was fighting for. why i was fighting. i just knew i had to. i broke my promise. that trust. but...he expected me to. he always knew i would. i thought - naively so, when i escaped the mist, that that would be it. i'd be free of those shackles.

"i could fulfill my promise and it would be for me as much as it was for him. i wanted him to trust me.

"yet still he brought an iron serpent capable of using light of ruin to the field. he brought a goliath capable of taking me down.

"and the david, as backup. that damned rabbit. not you - sorry. his wigglytuff. the one pokemon he used in our gym battle.

"he knew i'd be there. he knew i'd go after her. he knew we'd fight together - that she was a poison specialist. wo-chien, dark and grass; tapu fini, fairy and water, and he brought his wigglytuff.

"...

"you know, he said to me - he said she'd never offer herself to me. and she did. she wanted me to use her. wo-chien, at the end, i think it wanted me to use it too. and i -

"it scares me, knowing that i would have, less than a year ago. i'd have taken anything if it meant being less of myself.

"...

"thank you. for listening."

Returning to the Dyna Tree well-rested, Shalin stood near and prepared to regale the High King with another story, though this one had nothing to do with her travels in Hoenn. "Good day to you, High King Calyrex," the Rustboro Captain greeted. "Today I come to you with a tale of Fairy and Steel. A tale from long before I came to Hoenn. It was about five years ago, in the Arciel region far from here." Taking a deep breath and closing her eyes, she began to tell an exciting, harrowing, adventurous story of a forest unlike any other she had ever explored.

[player]https://fi.zophar.net/soundfiles/nintendo-snes-spc/final-fantasy-v/208%20As%20I%20Feel%2C%20You%20Feel.mp3[/player]
MUSIC - "As I Feel, You Feel" - FINAL FANTASY V ORIGINAL GAME AUDIO

"In the northeast corner of the distant Arciel region was a tree whose leaves and branches sparkled like gold. Hidden deep within the Sequoia Forest, fairy trickery caused the woods and wild Pokémon to grow to colossal heights. The farther north one went, closer to the Golden Tree, the larger the woods and the Pokémon became.

The fairies of the woods were among the most aggressive in the region. Granbull trampling, Mawile chomping, Ninetales dashing, Gardevoir watching, Ribombee flitting. They were Pokémon that seemed to defy wild instincts. Though I sent out trained Pokémon to protect me from them, they ignored them and went for me, as if the only purpose they served was to keep humans from setting foot near the Golden Tree. It was as though their very lives depended on making sure I never set foot there. I still remember the day a Nidoking the size of a truck stabbing through me with its Megahorn. It was only the voice of one of the watchers of the Golden Tree - a Galarian Rapidash bigger than any Rapidash you could imagine.

Leading me to the tree, I was in disbelief at what I saw. At the tree's base was a sword in a pedestal, radiating Infinity Energy unlike anything I had ever felt. It was as though the power of every fairy in the woods drew from it.

The Behemoth Blade.

As I stepped onto the pedestal and lifted the sword into my hands, black streaks shot up the tree, from root to crown. As the tree's bark grew more black, its golden glow faded. All the while, a vacuum-like sound echoed around the grove, growing louder and louder as the tree's trunk became darker. Once the black bark had reached the tree's apex, a bright flash blinded me, and the unthinkable happened: the opening of an Ultra Wormhole.

With the Behemoth Blade in hand, I fought valiantly to keep the Ultra Beasts from flooding Arciel. Its weight and power were overwhelming; while every swing cleaved an Ultra Beast in two, it felt like it took just as much of my own energy away from me. As I felled them, more flew through the Ultra Wormhole, overwhelming many of the Golden Tree's giant guardian Pokémon.

After the Galarian Rapidash that had saved my life gave its own to close the Ultra Wormhole, only one fairy of the forest remained: a colossal Ribombee that flew me to the woods' edge. It was my mistake that caused that entire region to be overrun by Ultra Beasts. And it was by my Behemoth Blade that I swore to right that wrong. With steel in hand and a flitting fairy for a steed, I had been tasked with ridding the region of its invaders."

"And that's the last memory I have of the Arciel region before I came to Hoenn," Shalin exhaled. "I don't remember what came of the region, nor do I remember what happened to the Behemoth Blade. I wonder if it's still out there somewhere..." Out of energy after recalling her exciting bur traumatic story, she let herself fall onto the grass beneath her.

TALES BENEATH THE DYNA TREE (LEAGUE)
POSTED ON Feb 17, 2024 21:34:08 GMT
Johanna Joy Avatar
Johanna returned once more when it became known to her that Calyrex wanted another story.

She would approach the king with the same respect she displayed last time before she began to tell her story.

“Long ago in a region now lost to time, there lived a Healer. They were not known far or wide for their skills but simply for their loveable personality and kindness, their skills in healing were ordinary at best, but their heart was pure and their desire to help was strong.” she began putting on her best storyteller voice.

“They lived their life in peace and quiet until one day a village nearby was struck by a plague. It didn’t take long before word got out and the surrounding towns came together to quarantine the place by raising impassable walls.” Johanna paused, recalling the tale as it had been told to her.

“But humans do not wish to be contained even when sick, and so the villagers who had yet to show symptoms of the Plague tried to escape. But for all their efforts they were caught.” She stopped letting the moment set somberly

“The escapees were thrown back into quarantine. But the damage had been done. A seed of fear had taken root and the thought of drastic measures had become tempting. In their fear the townsfolk saw no other answer than the death of the plague stricken villagers, for what is the worth of a village of strangers to the safety of their own family.”

“Luckily amidst the crowd the Healer stood. Having listened quietly and contemplated a solution to the dilemma. They could not fault the townsfolk of the neighboring towns for their desire to protect that which was important to them. Yet to take the life of another was a grave injustice. The Healer could not let them do this. And so they stepped forward proclaiming that ‘The murder of one village will not keep your families safe, for what will happen when the next plague strikes your towns?’ Johanna tried to speak the words with the same certainty she imagined the Healer of Eld carried.

“Instead the Healer offered their own life. They would enter the Plague stricken village and stay there until they were all cured or dead, themselves included.”

“The neighboring townsfolk agreed to this, though it pained them for they all loved the kind healer. But the Healer was allowed through and time moved on. Days turned to weeks, weeks to months. And at last the village was cured. The walls were lowered and the villagers were allowed to rejoin with the world. Then, and only then did the price they paid become clear. For while the villagers had been cured the Healer had succumbed to the deadly plague.”

“And so the Healer became an icon not for their skills. But the heroic example they set. It is easy to let the greater good be an excuse for acts of injustice. But doing so will simply breed more acts of injustice. No, to truly make the world a better place one must take the path of justice, even if you won’t live to see the fruits of your labor.”

“I hope you enjoyed the story. I personally did the first time it was told to me.”

“Cro rown.”

“Thank you for listening.” She bowed and left so the next one could tell their story.

Notes:
- Johanna tells the tale of a Village stricken by plague. The surrounding Towns, filled with fear, considered kill the sick villagers, but a heroic Healer managed to talk them out of such an injustice before sacrificing their own life in a heroic attempt to cure the plague stricken village.

"HIGH KING..." Remiel addresses the CALYREX with great reverence after taking a knee. "A pleasure making your acquaintance again. Shall I regale you with another tale?" The crown prince suggests with a smile as he rises from his kneel.[break][break]

In his hand there lies an ancient tome bound in old leather. And, as his APPLIN blesses the DYNA TREE with a SPRINGTIDE STORM, the Galarian takes his usual seat on the large tree root by the CALYREX's throne. "This one is about JUSTICE."[break][break]

[break]

"Once upon a time,[break][break]

[break]

There lived a noble king of GALAR named ARTORIAS. Though young, Artorias was a true son of HAMMERLOCKE and had united the twelve realms of GALAR after a terrible war with ZEKROM by his side. The people loved him for being a true and just king, though failed to see how the war had changed him and his patron.[break][break]

[break]

One day, a grievous crime was committed in the kingdom. A young knight named FARRAS was accused of stealing a MAGICAL STONE that King Artorias and ZEKROM had obtained during the war. The evidence against Farras was overwhelming and the royal court was convinced of his guilt. The people of HAMMERLOCKE demanded justice for this offense, and the king's advisors suggested he be made an example of to deter any would-be thieves in the future.[break][break]

But King Artorias had fought beside Farras during the war and remembered him as a kind and honest man. Finding it difficult to believe he would do something like this, the king decided to investigate the matter himself, ignoring the feverish call for blood as he sought truth.[break][break]

[break]

After days of questioning and thorough examination of the evidence, King Artorias and ZEKROM intercepted the true culprit as she attempted to escape HAMMERLOCKE with her stolen bounty: Farras's bride-to-be, GWYNHILDA. Filled with hate for the king after having lost her brothers during the war, Gwyn sought to use the magical stone to summon a great and evil power they had barely managed to defeat in the past. She had carefully plotted to frame her fiancee for her crime as a diversion to escape.[break][break]

The king, of course, was fuming with righteous fury at the injustice that had been done. When the truth was revealed, the people of GALAR were shocked and angered at the woman's betrayal of her fiancee, the king, and the kingdom as a whole. They demanded she be executed publicly for her transgressions. And, fueled with this irreproachable wrath, King Artorias and ZEKROM agreed.[break][break]

[break]

The morning of the execution, however, Farras stepped forward to offer himself instead. Despite everything she had done, the young knight still loved Gwynhilda. He could not bear to see her hung when he placed the blame on himself for not having helped her through her traumas. And King Artorias, with a deep-rooted sense of JUSTICE that had grown weary of bloodshed, was moved by this.[break][break]

This was not the IDEAL WORLD he had envisioned. True JUSTICE was not about vengeance and bloodshed, but rehabilitation and restoration. Executing Gwynhilda for such crimes would only make him as wicked as the evil they had quelled in the first place. So, wanting her to understand the power of mercy, King Artorias spared her life and ordered her to work the fields alongside Farras in the CROWN TUNDRA.[break][break]

As the months passed, Gwynhilda began to understand the gravity of her actions and the impact they could have had on Farras and the entire kingdom. She did not wish to create more martyrs and broken families by seeking vengeance for her own. So, through hard work and genuine remorse, she sought forgiveness and redemption. And Farras, with a forgiving heart, accepted his fiancee's efforts to make amends.[break][break]

[break]

The two would marry and form a royal lineage of CROWN TUNDRA kings loyal to GALAR for centuries. The people of GALAR themselves would learn an important lesson from this ordeal. JUSTICE, they realized, was not about retribution or punishment, but about understanding, forgiveness, and giving people the opportunity to make things right. King Artorias' commitment to fairness and compassion had shown them its true meaning, and for generations his kingdom continued to thrive as a beacon of righteousness and equality as a result.
[BREAK][BREAK]

The end."
[break]

✦[break][break]

"CRO ROWN!"
[break]

Remiel softly closed the tome shut as he finished, drawing in a deep breath of the DYNA TREE's sweet air before sighing. The CROWN TUNDRA, of course, would eventually use Gwynhilda's story as a platform to rebel. It was proof that, whether or not the story rang true in its entirety, its message differed depending on the reader. Mercy was a weakness to those who would take advantage of it.[break][break]

And, as history has proven time and time again, sometimes it wasn't enough.[break][break]

[attr="class","textbox"]"Heroes. All the places in the world you could go, and you come to Hoenn to ask about heroes. I'd say you're barking up the wrong tree, but considering this is your tree, maybe it's us looking in the wrong place." A quick, bitter laugh escaped Isaac as he turned over his shoulder, a city on a hill looming behind him. "But, hey. Since you asked so nicely, lemme give it my best shot."[break][break]

"There was once a lonely little knight on a lonely little planet, drifting its way through space." This time, the role of "space" was to be played by Isaac's Musharna, Harmony. Dreamy mist wafted from the spout atop its head as it sat before Calyrex, stars seeming to shimmer along the peels of the pink smoke. There, cast in shadow, hung a sphere, a little silhouette marching along its surface.[break][break]

"The knight didn't remember when he ended up on the lonely little planet. Sure as heck never asked for it. But that didn't stop him from marching up the length of the planet every sunrise and marching back down it every sunset. It was the only home he ever knew, and he could never let any harm come to it."[break][break]

"And yet, come, the harm did."[break][break]

Flashes of energy erupted through Musharna's mist like atom bombs. The rainbow shine of Mega Evolution. Unstable, cosmic wisps of meteoric Z-Power. The mutlifaceted reflections of Tera Energy Dynergy, crackling through like red lightning. The little planet shook to and fro, leading to the little knight holding on for dear life.[break][break]

"Gods and monsters saw the little planet drifting through the cosmos. Some took it as an insult, wanting to see it ripped right out of the sky. To others, it was a plaything, tossed around to and fro with no care for its well being. A few wanted to help, but they were so very big, and it was so very small. Even their gentlest attempts left its surface quaking."[break][break]

"There were days where the knight just wanted to give up. There were beings out there a thousand times bigger, a thousand times stronger than him, able to end both his life and his world with barely a thought. What use did he have to go on, when that was what awaited his little planet?" Isaac sighed, taking a second to compose himself. "And yet."[break][break]

"Who would see the sunsets when he was gone?"[break][break]

Slowly but surely, the shaking stopped. The intrusive lights pulled back. "Nobody. And there'd be nobody to walk the river that stretched from pole to pole, either. Nobody to tend to the forests. Nobody to explore the caves. Nobody to call the little cabin that he'd known all his life home. Sure, things beyond his understanding could ruin them all with a wave of their hand. But if he gave up on them because of it, would they be the ones guilty? Or would it be him?"[break][break]

"So the lonely little knight tended to his lonely little planet. There were days where he cried on it. There were days where he laughed on it. There were days where he watched the stars, wondering if he was the only one left in a cosmos too big for him. But he savored each and every one because it could always be his last."[break][break]

"And then, one day." After cycles and cycles of flashes of energy the planet shook. "Everything changed."[break][break]

"The planet shook. And shook. And shook some more, until cracks spread all along its surface. And then, like an egg, it hatched." There was no grand explosion. There was simply a gentle decay, the sphere slowly yet surely crumbling down to nothing. "As the knight looked down to see what was beneath, there was another lonely little person, the curled-up core of a world that no longer was."[break][break]

"The knight watched as they slumbered. And then, with a smile, he took his helmet off, ready to finally look himself in the eye."[break][break]

Hand in hand, the two little figures drifted through the cosmos. As Harmony's mist ebbed away, so, too, did they fade.[break][break]

"This region's no place for a hero. But that doesn't mean there aren't any. Think about it. Great, political machines rumble in the background, caring only about their own survival. Legends flock from everywhere in the world and even the universes beyond. Time, space, energy, and possibility have become weapons of war. Arceus itself wants our head on a platter."[break][break]

"Yet the sun always rises. And with it, so do we, ready to face another day. Ready to laugh, and lose, and learn, and love, and live. Because it might be a blink in a cosmic eye, but to us? That little planet called our life is all that matters. The biggest, maybe even the only, thing we'll ever experience."[break][break]

"You want a hero? Look at everyone that's got the strength to keep going in this Arceus-forsaken region. You'll find plenty."

[attr="class","star2tsu4"]Another long night, another quenched fire. [break][break]

Long branches of the tree protect them from the cold, wet winter rains. [break][break]

Embers light the base of the tree now, and Calyrex stares at the girl. She crouches down close, checking on him.[break][break]

"It's cold. I don't got a blanket, but..."[break][break]

She takes a hot stick, begins to stoke the fire that's burnt itself out.[break][break]

"How's about another story?"[break][break]

She watches the king. He just stares back. [break][break]

"Well... then, what about... yeah, that should work. The archer and the braviary.[break][break]

"A proud braviary once soared over the heavens. He was the heir of all above him, and took what he wanted from the lowly pidgeotto below him. [break][break]

"Every time they tried to hunt in his territory, he would steal from them, kill them, eat their meals. [break][break]

"That was the right of it. That's just how nature bore out. He was just doin' what was natural, cause he was strong, and he could. [break][break]

"That was justice in his eyes."
[break][break]

The fire starts to crackle loudly now, lighting the girl's face. She watches the flames dance, continuing her tale in hushed tones.[break][break]

"Well, one day when out hunting, he saw a group of pidgeotto and swooped down to terrorize them as usual. [break][break]

"When he got close, the pidgeotto scattered, and with all his momentum he was unable to escape what they were runnin' from. [break][break]

"An archer had decided to shoot at the pidgeotto. Decided that they, too, were his prey.[break][break]

"The braviary looked down to see what hit him, and lo', turns out it was an arrow fletched with his own feathers. [break][break]

"The feathers that carried him to all his stolen meals, all his killing of pidgeotto, had ended up being his undoing. [break][break]

"'Oh no', he said. 'If only I hadn't gone down so often to the treetops, to terrorize the pidgeotto. That archer never would've found my feathers to guide his arrow! Now I'll die because of it!'[break][break]

"And he did."
[break][break]

She pauses, staring at the flickering flame for a long time. The only sound, that of the damp logs popping in the heat and a sleepy sigh from the king.[break][break]

"Cro... own..."[break][break]

Baki looks up from the fires finally, staring at the only one listening to her story. There's a dangerous look in her eyes. [break][break]

"What you deliver unto others comes back to you. [break][break]

"Do good, and good will return to you. Kill, and be killed. [break][break]

"That's justice. [break][break]

"Or karma, if you wanna call it that.[break][break]

"There ain't nothin' else waiting for me, but before that all comes back to me... [break][break]

"Well, actually, it's a long story, and you look tired. Let's save it for another night."
[break][break]

She stops herself. No sense confiding that in the king. He doesn't know anything about this region or the next, the politics, the factions. The lost girl come back as an arrow. [break][break]

She watches, and waits for the king to fall asleep by the warmth of the fire before she eventually makes the long, wet trek back to her dormitory.[break][break]

A week claim and went soon it was time for a tale for the mighty king. Adel pondering a new story but she spoke from the past- her past. The tale she remember like it was yesterday. "There time before I joined the rangers that was just a wandering soul. I came to the region when tension were high. A enraged Luxray on the forest made trouble for may people."

"I didn't know land while I choice to to ask. I didn't know exactly what I would put against only using my knowledge of the wild. I dare to know what others at the time couldn't and braved the danger alone. All I had was a few pokemon none skills or potent they do but they didn't stop. Only on our mine was to see that menace was brought down."

"I search and searched and search until I found her or better called she found me. We close for what like age she knew why was there and she knew was a willing to do to see that it was done. The electricity thick in the air as battle began."

"It took everything. No amount of training or prep could have prepared for what was for the longest the hardest fight of my life. Everything was on the line - no words simply power and despite the old. I defeat her however that did mean I was going to end. i saw spirit of pokemon although temperamental and prideful has a heart underneath. Instead she began my friend and more ally. I found my call to aid nature as ranger and the rest is history.  i don't know if that would count for a heroism but it's my story nonetheless."

The blonde would remained silent for a time before the sound of approve from the might king.

Though, part of her does wonder about the mistakes he had made that led to his existence being forgotten.[break][break]

"Well, all I can do is give it a good old try." Gently pressing her hands together, she looks up to the king with a smile. "This time, let's start with..."[break][break]

Fading quick, like the constellations that watch from on high. Her knuckles grow white as the pale moon hanging over their heads.[break][break]

"Let's... start with a girl."[break][break]

[break]

There once was a girl haunted by ghosts and ghouls. No matter how much she pleaded, begged and ran, they would never leave her alone. Day after day, she would find herself tormented by them. And as the days went by, she was beginning to believe that she would never escape them for as long as she lived.[break][break]

But one day, a knight in shining armour appeared from nowhere. And with his secret magic, he would chase away all those ghosts and ghouls. That day would be the first time in her life that the girl wouldn't hear their whispers. That she wouldn't feel their presence sending chills down her spine.[break][break]

Strangely enough, the knight decided to stick around. And he would make the girl a promise, to always protect her no matter what happened. Her eyes lit up. This was the first time anyone had been able to do such a thing. And to promise that he'd keep her safe? From that moment onwards, that knight became a hero to her.[break][break]

Freed from her curse, the girl decided that she wished to go on an adventure. And the knight was more than happy to follow along, keeping true to his words as he took care of all the dangers that would dare to jump at them on their journey.[break][break]

Together, the two would travel to the ends of the world. They would see the deepest of chasms and chase the brightest of stars, walking under roaring waterfalls that originated from the heavens and crossing seas of flowers that would stretch for miles. As the knight continued to protect her from danger, the girl found that she had a new wish.[break][break]

To one day become strong enough to be a hero for the hero that had saved her life.[break][break]

And she would try her very best from that point forwards. Each time they ran into danger, the knight and the girl would work together. And each time, they might gain a few new scrapes and bruises, but they would always somehow manage to fend off the threat.[break][break]

Slowly but surely, the girl was getting stronger. Or at least, that was what she believed with all her heart. After all, with the knight telling her the very same thing, how could she not?[break][break]

One day, whilst passing through a field of snow, the land shook as a giant dragon rampaged. Creatures attempting to flee would be frozen by its breath, humans attempting to fight back battered by the hailstorm it summoned. The knight, being a knight that wished nothing more than to help people that needed it, would throw himself into the fray without hesitation. But the girl, weak and powerless as she was, would falter.[break][break]

It was okay to leave this to the knight, wasn't it? After all, he promised that he would protect her no matter what happened. He was a hero that could defeat any evil.[break][break]

Death was a being that wandered the field, taking all into its embrace and guiding them onwards to new lands. The girl, having been haunted by ghosts and ghouls all her life, would fear running into this spectre. For once, she would not follow the knight into battle. Instead, she would cower away and avert her eyes from the ghost.[break][break]

On the other hand, the knight would fight with all his might. To defend a few more hearts. To save a few more souls. In turn, he would garner death's attention and ire. For you see, this knight had once cheated death itself. And so, death would charge at the knight, all too ready to take him down and make him pay the price.[break][break]

The girl, who was all too familiar with the thoughts and movements of spirits, would turn to see death and its mount looming over the knight. And she'd scream, every bit of fear and dread she'd held towards the ghost now condensed into a fear of losing the knight. Running towards the one she called her hero, her prayers would become a magic that protected the knight from the finishing blow.[break][break]

And yet, the girl's efforts were still too little, too late. The knight would ultimately fall before her very eyes.[break][break]

[break]

"The story doesn't exactly end there. When the knight falls, the girl notices how his helmet cracks and shatters. And lying underneath it, isn't some angel or mythical god. What she sees is a human. A human, just like her."[break][break]

One final squeeze of her palms.[break][break]

"There is a kinda sorta happy ending. In the end, the knight does live and reunites with the girl. But nothing is ever the same in her eyes."[break][break]

Then she lets go.[break][break]

"Truth is, heroes are not born. They are created. They emerge because people need someone to believe in. Someone strong that will take care of all their problems and protect them no matter what."[break][break]

"But because of how much they give, because of how many they save time and time again, they become a sort of legend. A hero that will never fail, an invincible force that will chase away all kinds of danger. And over time, people tend to forget that these heroes are still people like them. They still tire. They still get hurt. They can still die."[break][break]

Her heart quivers, as does her breath.[break][break]

"People always wish for heroes to appear and protect them in their time of need. But who's gonna protect the heroes in their time of need?"[break][break]

"Maybe... we shouldn't search for heroes."[break][break]

"Maybe, it's time we take things into our own hands and just... try to protect those we love. You might say that's just you becoming a hero yourself. But I think, if everyone were to do the same, if everyone became a hero, no one would have to be a hero. Not anymore."

All these stories- heroic and fantastical tales aplenty- were more than intriguing to Sio. The reporter, having stayed towards the front of the crowd, had merely let her colleagues and peers take turns before her. They wanted to see what those who had not known what they did viewed justice. What *was* rightful retribution? Whose lights blew away in the wind, and who stayed triumphant? Were villains given undeserved second chances, or were heroes falling flat on their face in despair and detriment?

While all of these guesses and attempts had been grandiose in nature, they knew that only they held the *true* answers. The unadulterated, deniable facts of the world, told in blinding lights and spectacular movements on a self made stage.

“Ahem. Allow me, if you will,” the detective speaks, flashing a sly, almost cocky grin to those around her. On either side of her bound up her most faithful of companions- Kaló floating carefully at shoulder level, while Quill hops and skips right at their feet. The three turn to face Calyrex head on, Sio steeling what little nerves she had to take a precursory bow. They had never seen this king personally, and yet they knew that they had to perform at their best.

“This, dear friend, is a tale of trials and tribulations. Of fear and of triumph. Of true, heroic justice.” Sio stretches their arms out to their sides, graciously widening their presence before the Calyrex while cuing their pokemon to begin acting out the tale for them.

"Once upon a time, long, long ago, lived a young girl much like any other. She was no princess, nor any sort of regality; in fact, she was quite the opposite. Her family had little to come by, and she herself was horribly ill. Bound to her bed most days, the girl revelled in any time she'd get outside, even if bound by wires and tubes. She'd explore her hometown high and low, dawn till dusk, in between every crevice and in every bush." At this, Quill begins to move- using his roleplaying expertise to prnace about on wobbly legs, tail tucked in between them. He sniffs the grass, the tree, even near the Calyrex itself. "The little girl adored the world, believing it to be absolutely perfect despite her own shortcomings in such a feeble body. The only gripe that the girl had was with time itself; that she did not have enough of it to grow alongside the world, to see everything beyond her town borders. Until, by mysterious happenstance, she came upon a fairy one day, deep in the woods." Now Kaló joins the story, floating about not unlike the creature of myth. She draws closer to Quill, mouthing along vaguely to Sio's words while Quill does the same.

"Oh, sweet child, what are you doing out here all alone?" said the fairy.
"I only wished to explore the world once more. Any moment could be my last, and I so desperately want to enjoy it all," explains the little girl.
"Why, why must you be so worried about time? You are such a small and sweet child, there should be nothing stopping you from enjoying this world at its fullest," replies the fairy, confused and seemingly naive. The two chatter for some length of time. "Well, because μαμά said I was sick! Sick people cannot do much, unlike fairies." "What if I helped you to live longer? To be healthier, happier?"

The "help" comes in the form of Kaló using Telekinesis to lift Quill up into the air. The two float together happily, whimsically. Quill's posture grows more relaxed, and he howls with laughter and glee.

"And all was well; that is, until everything had taken a turn. Until the fairy had decided it finally needed payment from the girl, now years older and even happier to be alive. The fairy pushed, and shoved, and demanded tooth and limb from the girl and her family. And when the family could no longer provide..."

All at once, Kaló slams Quill down to the ground. Pink energy swirls around him, until his mouth is forced shut. His eyes widen and almost tear up- he looks around, desperate for someone, anyone to listen to him. To help him. To please, dear lord, someone, save him again.

"'Is this it? Is this all my life will become?' Worried the girl. 'How will I continue on when I can't even speak for myself anymore? My family no longer looks me in the eye, my friends take false pity upon me, I'm worse off than I was before!" Quill brings himself down to his knees, weeping and rubbing his eyes, while the fairy contninues to loom over Quill. At least, until he reaches out and yanks her closer. They whirl in a dance of conflict and blows snarling and snickering. "The girl was determined to fight back. To get right to the source of what had dealt her such a horrible hand of cards." Kaló lets out a final defeated cry, wilting to the ground. "And when she had won, she'd go on to tell her friends- the rest of her hometown. She warned them of the dangers of fairies like the one she'd met, and would continue to..."

Until that girl stood here beneath the Dyna tree, bowing to a king and a captive audience. "Justice would continue to be fought for relentlessly, and continue to be won. The girl refused to stop until all the horrible fairies dropped like flies; and legend has it that she's still at it today, hunting down fairies and trapping them in the cold iron of justice."

And with that, they turn around- both pokemon standing to attention and back to normal as they follow Sio back to her seat.

He actually liked coming out late in the evenings, because at least he didn’t have to deal with the evil orb hanging in the sky. He wasn’t too much of a fan of the sun; summer was easily his single worst season.

After waiting for the previous person to depart, he would pull up with the same half-bow as last time, before sitting down some distance away—he didn’t want to get in the Calyrex’s personal space.

“My story… is one from home. I’m not really from Hoenn, I’m from Unova, and the culture up north has a lot of folk tales with a hero playing a very big part.”

He then took a deep breath, and began:

“Back when there was more nature around Unova, Pokémon lived peacefully in the forest… well, that was, until humans started encroaching on their borders and cutting down trees to make room for settlements. There was one time a fire was left unattended, and the resulting forest fire would’ve been disastrous…”

He trailed off, providing for some dramatic effect.

“…had three heroes not come to the Pokémon’s rescue. Now it wasn’t exactly specified if the heroes were human that understood the Pokémon’s plight, or Pokémon themselves—however the version I’m most familiar with has the three heroes taking the form of what’s known as the Swords of Justice.”

He wondered if anyone else had picked this tale.

“Cobalion, the leader, would help everyone get out to safety. Terrakion, the strongest of the three, would bulldoze whatever obstacles to help those trapped by the fire escape. And Virizion, fastest of them all, would run back and forth to help the older Pokémon who were left behind; or otherwise would’ve been lost.”

He then wrung his hands after he was done.

“The funny thing is, another region supposedly took this story of heroism and turned it into their own version—the Three Musketeers, I don’t know if you’ve heard of them; but they’re three human swordsmen who fought against the corruption and tyranny of an evil king to bring the rightful heir to the throne.”

Whew, this was tiring.

“As for the Pokémon who were saved from the forest fire? They were eternally thankful that their heroes had saved them, because while they had lost their home; they had gained three protectors who would watch over the new forest that they would all live in.”

He had no idea if the Calyrex was impressed…

“Well, that’s my tail for this evening.”

Alex picked the Unovan version of the Swords of Justice story to tell; that narrates three heroes who saved lots of lives from a forest fire.

It would take some time for Lars to come by the strange tree the next week, because he’d been busy running around helping train some of the new Ranger trainees who were still wet behind the ears in an outdoor excursion that took up almost the entire week…

So yes, he would show up looking quite a mess at the strange tree and caught sight of his friend who’d just finished his own tale—he only heard the tail end of it, but then…

He realized he had the perfect tale to tell.

“Sorry I look like a mess. I was out training the newer Rangers on survival situations in the wild. We only got back just now. So… I actually have a story, but it’s from my other home, dunno if you’ve heard of Alto Mare or some such. Anyway.”

He then dusted himself off as best as possible and sat down a respectable distance away from the Calyrex, before getting started.

“Back then, back when Alto Mare was still wild, open spaces where various settlements always warred, there was a king. A wise, fair, and just king. The king was old, and knew he didn’t have too long for this world. So he called for his own son by birth, and his son by adoption—one of his finest generals. Between the two, he had to make a choice as to who his successor would be.”

He continued to brush dirt off himself while he continued.

“His biological son was hoping to be the one to be chosen, however—the old king chose his adopted son, his general that had helped unite most of the land together, to be his successor to the throne. Of course someone was going to be pissed. So, unbeknownst to the ‘appointed heir’, the biological son actually murdered his father in cold blood, and framed the actual heir by spreading false lies about how he was chosen to be the next in line to the throne.”

Trouble was clearly brewing on the horizon.

“In order to silence his ‘brother’, the wicked son then had him banished; his family killed, his loyal legions seized from his control and subdued to serve under his own corrupt generals and officers. But of course, the true heir knew what had happened, and vowed to bring down justice on the wicked heir.”

He was already internally cackling at this point, because this story actually had a movie shot around this exact premise. He was just… cutting out the boring parts to make it exciting.

“After being sent far away, the true heir, now sold as a slave, found himself assembled alongside other slaves who were chosen to be sacrificed to the Pyroar. To the Lycanroc, if you may. However, these slaves could fight, and he led them to victory after victory. Fighting across the provinces, gaining fame as they went until they were invited to the capital proper for a match in front of the ‘heir apparent’, who wanted to celebrate his father’s memory with ‘reenactments’ of various battles across history.”

Boy they were just getting to the good part.

“And so the group of gladiators who had become famous were summoned, and a famous battle was recreated—only they were put in the shoes of the ‘losing’ team, but… you know how stories are meant to change and be broken, right?” he chuckled.

“Anyway. After they secured their victory, the ‘heir apparent’ wanted to meet them, but their glorious leader—the actual ‘heir’ to the throne—only revealed his face under threat of death. Well, the false heir was in for the shock of his life to see just who this valiant legionnaire was—it was his adopted brother, the general he had deposed and killed. Very much alive and ready to bring justice for his family and for their slain father, the king.”

He had to take a breather because this was horribly long but there you go.

“Of course the fake heir tried to have the real heir, his adopted brother, killed by various underhanded means. But see, the thing is, the real heir, who now fought as a gladiator, had become a beacon of hope among the ordinary people. Of heroism. Of something that they could all aspire to be once they were freed from the chains of tyranny.”

His hands were mostly clean by the time he got to the next part.

“The fake heir had promised his brother freedom, but not without one last fight. Of course, being the dirty cheater that he was, he’d secretly stab his opponent before heading out to that one last symbolic fight. Nobody but the fake heir’s ‘right hand’, who had seen what had happened, knew that what he did was wrong.

And so they fought. Fought in front of an assembled audience, with people actually cheering on the gladiator, because of the hope he represented—however, justice would be served for the fake heir as the true heir had managed to end the battle—but not without him dying as well.”

He sighed.

This was a story that did not have a happy ending.

“While the true heir’s fellow gladiators were set free, and justice had been brought down on the fake heir for very nearly stealing the throne as well as killing the king just to get the throne he wanted so badly… the true heir would not live to see them free. He quite literally, died a hero beloved by all.”

Oh ho, a hero, eh? Galar was never in short supply of those folks,” the man said with a glint in his eye. From the stars above, since he had returned once more during the cover of night. The four Pokémon had accompanied him as well, excited to hear the next story they’d already heard a dozen times over.

Well– I have a great idea,” he looked to the other Pokémon gathered, “what do you all think? With so many options, I feel like it should be one we all agree on.

The Obstagoon quickly signed something with gusto, but Tavish gave her a deadpan stare. “Obstagoon, come on. That one’s been done to hell and back. We can’t just give The King the most basic story there is. We need something heroic, something grand. Something that truly stands out.

Farfetch’d!

The Obstagoon signed again, must less passionate this time. “That one’s a bit more... vengeance-ye, yea? Not what we’re lookin’ for. Maybe another time.

It was the Stunfisk-Galar’s turn to sound off, and once again Obstagoon signed off for the man. He shook his head tiredly, which caused the living bear-trap to get snippy. The furry creature groaned and replied. This started a cascade of responses and furious hand movements that all four of the original Galarian homebodies took part in. None of them could possibly agree on what regal, grandiose, heartfelt story to tell their King.

Until the Toxicroak chimed in. His hand movements were much clunkier than the Obstagoons, much less refined. He had been learning sign language at a pace that rivaled molasses, but his hands were able to get a vague message across: “Woah there, who the hell is King Kenneth?

The rest of the faces (sans Calyrex, who was probably just as clueless) gave him a shocked expression. “You… you don’t know King Kenneth?

Once again, Bloke tried to sign his response. “Course not. Never been in Galar.

But King Kenneth… is the best one! His style, his elegance, his grand tales! Everyone knows him! He’s the biggest one!

The other three spoke relatively similar things, about how he was the most important one to know just because of how cool he was. How he saved a kingdom from the hands of raiders, how he solved stalemates in seconds flat. Sir spoke the loudest of them all, about how he had solved the Devils’ riddle when no one else could.

Devil’s riddle? What, he want your soul but only for a few dollars?

No, of course– okay, we need to talk about this, yea?

They all agreed with a nod. The man quickly flipped the pages, desperate to see if he could remember the exact page that was on. It wasn’t a long one, but it was around the three hundreds– ah, seventy-eight, not sixty-eight. He smoothed out the page and quickly gave it a once over to make sure it was just how he remembered.

Of course it was. Hell, he could probably tell it by heart. But for the sake of posterity, he cleared his throat and looked down at the page. Then, he began to read:

Once upon a time, King Kenneth was in his castle. All his retainers, family, and blessed Pokemon were seated for supper, enjoying the bountiful harvest of their fields. Yet something was amiss— only the King himself could tell. The rest of the people were unable to notice, for they did not have the sixth sense the King did. This food was good, but tasted strange. As if someone had sneaked in a strange herb.

Sure enough, the rest of those in attendance for the grand feast soon fell ill. All but the King, who could only watch as they soon fell into a stupor. Strange. Odd. He knew there was a foul presence behind this. ‘Show yourself, you foul being of the night!’ he shouted. How furious he was!

And the Devil showed himself– dressed in all black, with horns that curled into infinite circles and hooves that left hellfire as he crossed the grand hall. Despite the bright sun, the sky soon turned to despair and became clouded with sin. Eventually, the stood face to face.

‘Why do you act as you are, Devil? Undo your foul trick!’

‘Ah, but for I to do that, it would endanger these merry fellows. For you see, I’ve granted them a deep dream. They do not know what is happening, but they are in bliss. Their wildest dreams, come to life. And to wake them is to kill them. I wish to rule over a people of peace and calm, and if you wish, I can send you off into a deep sleep. One free from problem or hardship.'

Of course, the King did not want this. Instead, he drew his sword and pointed it straight at the creature. ‘You fiend! I shall end your terrible existence in but a moment, if you don’t unhand my people! For their lives must be filled with hardship, as that is what makes it worth living!’

‘Then I shall grant you instead a question. A riddle, if you will. Answer it correctly and truthfully, and I shall grant you your desire and let your people go free. However, answer it wrong or without your full heart, and I shall damn you all to my domain. This kingdom and mine will be intertwined, and you all sent to a hellscape beyond your worst nightmare.’

Of course, the King did not falter in the face of a trial or tribulation. ‘Then lay your silly question onto me, so I may send you back to the land from whence ye came, o’ devious creature of the night.’

‘Very well, then. Riddle me this, Wise King Kenneth: I’m always coming, yet never show. People look to me, yet never see me. When I arrive, I’m back at the start. What am I?’

The Great King too much time pondering the question. He returned to his throne and put his head into his hands. For seven days and six nights, the King thought without break. All the while, the Devil waited as well. Yet while Kenneth never broke a sweat, the Devil grew impatient. This lasted until he could stand it no longer, and stomped a hoove into the granite floor. ‘I grow impatient, Kenneth. Answer, or I shall take what is rightfully mine!’

‘But you said I have to answer your question wrong for that to happen, and without my full heart behind it. A heart is not a thing to rush.’

‘I grow tired, Kenneth. If you do not have an answer, that is as good as being wrong.’

‘Incorrect, you foul creature. For a King must never rush to a conclusion when it comes to his people. That would be to put your own interest at heart, for tomorrow is but a day away from damnation.’

The Devil paused, clearly flabbergasted by Kenneth’s response. ‘How could you possibly know the answer to my riddle? It was quite a difficult one! No one has ever surmised its answer correctly.’

‘I did not, devious Devil. You gave it to me yourself.’

He realized that he had, in fact, confirmed the answer without the King ever speaking of it. He’d been fooled by his own question. In a huff, he undid the spell on the people and stormed out of the castle. The flames of the night were quenched, and day finally returned to the land. The people came to, and were clueless as to what occurred. King Kenneth spoke what happened, and they all rejoiced at the clever thinking of their King. Instead of the harvest, the celebrated their wondrous and smart ruler, for his thinking had saved the people without even so much as a worry of his success.

And they all lived happily. Ever. After,” the man finished his story with a tear in his eye. He quickly wiped it away and looked at Bloke. “Rather inspiring, right? Makes me tear up every time.”

“... That was stupid, ain’t it? Hell, I figured it out in a moment or two. Not too many things can ‘come’ yet never arrive.

Yea, right! That was rather hard. If it weren’t for the tale, I’d never get that answer.

Ya can’t be serious, right? What else do people look towards yet never see? Infinity, maybe? The future? Just think about it. Not hard, not one bit.

Oh, shut up! Liar.

Who you callin’ a liar, huh? Just cause you’re too caught up in the details– that’s where the devil is, I hear.

Oh for the love of–

Their bickering came back, but the King watched with joy. Their tale, even if simple and easy to see the end of, had been a tale nonetheless. It was rather heroic to goad an enemy into giving you the answer to a problem. Especially if it held many a life at stake. After all, it takes a lot of courage to act in the face of hardship. And if that isn’t heroic, then what was the meaning of the word anyway?
