Introduction

Welcome to Hollowcrest Hall, an enigmatic mansion perched near the sea with its history lost to time and rumor. A select few have been invited to a grand masquerade, with invitations tailored to draw people in by any means necessary. The only condition is that your face must remain hidden behind a mask, as none are permitted to reveal their identity upon entering.

Once inside, one should notice that there are no human hosts; only the silent, eerie presence of ghost-type pokemon who guide you through the hallways. The mansion itself is vast, with a grand ballroom gleaming under crystal chandeliers, a sprawling kitchen also managed by pokemon, and long corridors leading to dimly lit rooms where one may rest, or perhaps, escape.

Participants are encouraged to join the dance, savor the fine food and drink, and take part in the many festivities. The air is thick with secrets, and the halls whisper with something unseen. Something is not quite right about this place. Will you uncover the truth behind the masquerade before it’s too late?

the Hollowcrest Hall was once the grand estate of the Rennard family, a lineage with roots shrouded in mystery. Reginald Rennard, the first of his name to settle in Hoenn, commissioned the mansion nearly a century ago. For decades, the Rennard name was synonymous with nobility, but after the Ultra Beast War, the family vanished from most records without a trace.

SUMMARY

This is a masquerade ball event set in the mysterious Hollowcrest Hall during the night of Halloween. Players are encouraged to explore, interact with each other, and enjoy the atmosphere of the grand estate. Players can freely roam the mansion, dance, partake in festivities, and uncover its secrets.

Every few days, the event moderator will post an unusual or supernatural event that takes place in the hall. These mod posts will also include a riddle for participants to solve. Players are encouraged to interact with both the spectacle and the riddles, helping to piece together the broader mystery at play. The event will unfold through multiple strange occurrences, gradually building up to a grand revelation for everyone involved.

While the moderator will introduce riddles and strange occurrences throughout the event, the storytelling heavily depends on the participants. Engage with one another and shape your own experiences within Hollowcrest Hall as the mystery gradually reveals itself in the background.

Some claim to have witnessed strange portals around the estate, believed to lead to other worlds. The most unsettling tales emerge on Halloween night, with multiple disappearances recorded near the estate during this eerie time of the year.

Bold your riddle answers.

You may only use one character for this event.
Posting multiple times between mod posts is acceptable.
Interaction with clues, riddles or spectacles is not required.
Most importantly, embrace the mystery and have fun!

Riddles

Riddles will appear in each mod post throughout the event, taking various forms such as questions, images, puzzles, or statements. Each riddle requires a single-word answer. To ensure fairness, both singular and plural forms of the answer will be accepted. While some riddles might relate to pokemon, the answers may not, so keep this in mind when solving them.

To earn rewards, players must provide their answers in a single post following the initial mod post. The answer must also be in bold. Failure to meet these requirements will result in the answer being considered incorrect. A subsequent mod post will tag those who answered correctly and the item they can automatically add to their PC.

Some riddles will be trickier than others, so participants should expect a challenge. While there may appear to be multiple answers at times, only one will ever be considered correct. Feel free to work with others to uncover the answers.

Grand Mystery

The grand mystery of Hollowcrest Hall will unfold gradually through a series of spectacles, riddles, and clues provided in mod posts. Each post will reveal new pieces of the puzzle, leading players closer to uncovering the estate's deeper secrets. Unlike the individual riddles, the grand mystery requires a comprehensive understanding of all the clues and events that have transpired. This means the solution will be more than just a one or two word answer.

Players will have only one chance to submit their solution to the grand mystery. Partial answers will not be accepted, and once a player attempts an answer, their opportunity will be lost. It’s advisable to wait until more information has been revealed before making an attempt. Part of the solution may appear very obvious while the other part certainly will not. To encourage an element of secrecy, players should send their final answers privately to TEAL rather than posting them publicly, but this is not a requirement.

The first two players to solve the grand mystery correctly will each receive a special reward.

Rewards

Rewards will be distributed after each riddle is solved in the following round. Characters who guessed correctly will be tagged and can add those items to their inventory. At the event's conclusion, all participants will receive a larger reward for uncovering the grand mystery.

The esteemed Rennard family is rumored to have amassed a significant collection of ancient sculptures and paintings which can be found scattered throughout Hollowcrest Hall. Many of these artworks depict legendary pokemon, with some artifacts appearing so ancient that their origins and dates are shrouded in mystery.

Eerie Beginnings

The Hollowcrest Hall begins to stir as guests trickle into the grand estate. At the entrance, each is greeted by a ghost-type pokemon, ensuring every guest complies with the invitation’s most important rule: no one may enter without a mask. Once approved, the ghost pokemon usher the guests swiftly down dim corridors toward the ballroom where the festivities have already begun.

Inside, the grand ballroom gleams under the soft glow of flickering chandeliers. The lively halloween-like music fills the air, though no musicians can be seen. Instead, instruments float in midair, swaying as if played by unseen hands. Some guests are already lost in the rhythm of the night, dancing with masked partners, while others linger by the lavish buffet tables, sampling strange and exquisite treats and sipping drinks as they observe the spectacle.

The rest of the mansion remains locked away. The kitchen and dining rooms are closed to all, their heavy doors bolted shut without explanation. Should any guest venture beyond the ballroom into the labyrinthine halls, they will likely encounter a ghost-type pokemon. Some of these spectral guides may gently urge the wanderer back to the ballroom; others may lead them to one of the many dust-covered long-abandoned bedrooms where guests are encouraged to stay overnight.

perhaps absinthe is an unusual sight, here in the hollowcrest hall. among the feathered and gilded masks that obscure the faces of politicians, aristocrats, socialites and celebutantes, she is a figure in black. her mask, at least, looks like it could be real: a military issue breathing apparatus that fits snugly over her entire face, fogging slightly with each exhale. it's anyone's guess what lies beneath.[break][break]

she isn't here to make friends or curry favor. she's here to observe. she has been pulled to this land by a living specter, a woman she knew before abby died, before absinthe was born from the ashes. absinthe, as she is now, is not made for parties. it does not come naturally to her. she attends only because she is asked to by an old friend she struggles to say no to.[break][break]

speaking of the demoness, where might Evelyn Vespera have wandered off to...?[break][break]

at the very least, the music is nice, even despite the ghostly manner with which the keys are plucked. absinthe entrenches herself in the music in lieu of any physical comforts, counting along to the beat.

As Chu-e passed through the door, his purse is handed off to one of the ghost types. The Haunter gives the man a confused look as they pass by, holding the purse up and shaking it. The red and black lace ends up being swallowed with a giggle, the Haunter vanishing from sight.[break][break]

Chu-e tapped the fox mask on his face to ensure it was staying aloft. It had been borrowed (without permission) from one of howard slayte's shelves. A few new straps and it had been perfectly usable for this occasion. The rest of his outfit was plain and unimportant; not usual for his 'going out' style, but he hadn't the room to store more extravagant outfits yet. Maybe someday.[break][break]

A smartly dressed woman in a gas mask (Absinthe Blackwood) lurked in the corner of the large room, one of the few interesting looking guests. Chu-e did not approach her, however, too busy in lingering by the floating instruments. He watched them closely through the eye slats provided.[break][break]

A dramatic, drawn out, over top sigh escapes him.[break][break]

"How very sad that I have no one to dance with!" Is said, a bit too loudly (on purpose).

They were told to savor the fine food and drink, likely stolen from some illustrious grocery store where tipping the cashier was expected and everything was organic. It was highly likely that the food was cursed and that the drink was tainted with the blood of innocents.

Granted, that came with the risk when it happened to be free.

"Incredible." A man dressed in a fine suit said as he plucked at a plate with numerous types of bread. The outfit fit well, if not for the Big Bubba's Bargain Bin bag that had been shamelessly placed over his head to hide his identity. Two eye holes had been cut out for sight, even though only one was needed. "Haunted bread? Delicious."

If only the carbs were as transient as the ghosts who had offered it. Alas.

When Chu-e Choi 's voice rang out through the main hall, Howard let out a small 'eep!' and ducked under the table, which Absinthe Blackwood would get the dubious honor to witness. Good thing that bag guy wasn't her boss, otherwise it'd be living proof that Team Rocket had scraped the bottom of the barrel.

As Chu-e passed by, Howard poked his head out from under the table to ensure that the former underboss had meandered on in his attempts for courtship.

"Shhhhh!" He told the chemist, before plucking a glass of wine from a passing Haunter.

A haunted mansion, but one decked out for a masquerade... It was a fascinating notion, honestly; and the truth was they were indeed quite fond of ghost types. Perhaps... They could get away, with being a little showy? While they would still dress as nicely as their wallet allowed underneath, you didn't need too much in the way of elaborate silks and the like if you had a Zorua.

With someone so skilled in Illusions, Makoto had someone to help add a little bit special effects; things to make them appear just as phantasmal as the hosts. They did not appear as though their steps touched the ground - even if reality was otherwise.

Though they normally would not be so flashy, well... Who would recognize them?

At their side, their Sneasler - Kama - would adjust the mask on his face and the gloves over his claws, chittering happily. A party! That sounded like fun! And he even got to play along, dressed like a little butler to the lady that was Makoto for the night..! He carefully holds the front door open for Makoto, and follows them into the main hall.

Which is a dazzling sight, to say the least. No expenses were spared... If a ghost even had to deal with expenses, that was. There were a number of other people here, although they'd find themself drawn to the refreshments and catering provided, at least to start.

But, the last thing they expected was for someone to poke out over the table with a bag over their head; someone who seemed... Strangely familiar, after hearing them speak.

"Howard?" Makoto blinked. Was that howard slayte ? "Is... that you?" Why was he under a table..??

Kama glanced to Makoto, then to Howard, and made a puzzled squeak.

TLDR: Makoto's dressed decently nice, but also using illusions from Kuro (who is hidden in their shadow) to add some ghostly special effects. Kama is dressed up like a little butler and accompanying Makoto. Upon entering the hall, they recognize howard slayte and the both of them are wondering why the heck he's under a table.

If anything, it drew attention to them.[break][break]

...Which was proven when someone muttered his name questioningly. Pfffft.~ He stifles the laughter with a raised hand, though it's almost cruel how quickly they lost their anonymity.[break][break]

Adrian, clad in the black luster of a beaked venetian mask, would turn his attention to Absinthe Blackwood and lock eyes before shaking his head with his sharp disapproval. Only to be distracted by an assortment of cocktail shrimp. ...Just one couldn't hurt...[break][break]

"Mmm.~" He's reminded of—of the Star Soiree. His arm had been less vacant, then. And he might've had more reason to smile.[break][break]

He observes the cacophony, listening for the familiar voice and gait of Rowan Wrynn.[break][break]

Dressed in a simple dress with flower motifs and gentle plaits, she adorns a curious little fox mask that she's saved from her time at the new year's festivals. It does well in hiding her expressions, the subtle twitches and frowns as she takes in the setting. The voices that surround her are a mix of foreign and painfully familiar, her gaze tracing the tables of food as a man goes around taste testing the breads as if it were a Steel Chef competition. Mismatched eyes close as her attention dips away, blissfully ignorant to the way the same man ducks under the table. All because of one particular voice.[break][break]

To announce a lack of a dance partner. Or well, bemoan the lack of one. She can't help the little snort that escapes her, even as Isolde tilts her head at such a graceless gesture. It really is just like him to pull such a stunt. The only question is whether she should approach him on this fine night, all when it has yet to begin -[break][break]

Ah, but Eyja will not let her make the decision tonight, the joyous little Yamper scampering towards what she deems familiar. And she barks, tail wagging ever so excitedly as she nuzzles up against the poor man's ankle (with her little bits of static electricity).

if this wasn't a masked affair, nikola would not be here. they have absolutely no desire to be caught with their proverbial pants down by someone who knew them as catellus. their hair is dyed, and they're quite skilled at manipulating their own voice, but there's not much they can do about the rest of their face or body.[break][break]

and that is how nikola came to be here today, sporting a plague doctor mask and loading up their plate with food. they're quite content to enjoy the evening by themself, but then they hear a familiar name from a bit further down the table. common sense dictates they ignore it, but they wouldn't be much of a researcher if their curiosity didn't get the better of them sometime... so, against their better judgment, they follow the voice until they come upon makoto standing by their lonesome.[break][break]

Cillian wasn't planning to come.[break][break]

Well, all right. Originally he'd planned to go with Tempest Quinn, a cute little Halloween date-night, but his husband was in bed recovering from illness at Cillian's behest. He'd been lamenting that fact to Chu-e Choi when his friend had insisted that he come along regardless.[break][break]

Little in Hoenn was what it seemed. Good point.[break][break]

Unfortunately for Chu-e, the sight of a small girl heading toward them is enough to drive Cillian off.[break][break]

"For your sake," he growls, soft enough so only Chu-e will hear, "I'm going to go get a drink."[break][break]

He wanted Eris Halla dead, but he wasn't about to kill her in front of her dad.[break][break]

So he stalks off toward the tables in time to hear Makoto Kurumi's comment to howard slayte. He scoops a glass of something dyed the bright green colour of slime, sipping at it as he turns to Makoto.[break][break]

Though the mask of a Corviknight conceals his face, the rumble of Cillian's voice might be familiar as he asks, "Howard? Where?" He looks down, following their gaze. "What the hell are you doing under there?"

"I don't know any Howards. Stupid name, that." Howard muttered as a Skarmory with a top hat on his head fluttered down from the heavens. The steel bird pecked at his bag several times, before flying over to chatter with Makoto's Sneasler. "I'm..."

He almost said 'unemployed', before stopping himself. There was a momentary war between his pride and his dignity. Unfortunately, they both left each other mortally wounded, so the admin's startling lack of shame was ultimately what won that battle.

"...Howard, yeah." He slumped his head and sighed. "Don't tell anyone, though. It's a secret."

Unfortunately, a crowd had gathered, including the person he went to hell with, the person who had saved him from Regirock's fist, and his boss, alternatively known as the other person he had recently went to hell with. Given that Tempest Quinn wasn't clinging to Cillian's arm, Howard assumed he was at home feeding his Corsolas or something.

Alternatively, he was sleeping off the effects of... that trip to the Borders.

"I'm hiding from my roommate. I'm afraid he'll ask me to do something absurd, like dance. I'm just here for the food and artifacts." Howard told Cillian Quinn and Adrian Malcolm as he lifted the bag slightly to drain his glass of wine. He shuddered in trepidation, before passing the empty glass to a nearby Dusclops. "Not unless it's a special occasion, which it's not."

When his coupons refreshed for the grocery store, he'd dance. Not for something as absurd as a masquerade. He rose to his full height and raised a glass to Makoto Kurumi and NIKOLA SAMSA .

"You look lovely, Makoto. I didn't think you'd go all out." He screwed up his face at Nikola. "Don't peck my eye out with that mask. I'm all out of spares."

GLASS ONE DOWN GLASS TWO IS A GO. Illumina Skarmory is flying around with a top hat and bow tie, yapping.

what a ridiculously absurd situation.[break][break]

normally, absinthe would consider an admission of loneliness to be little more than a desperate plea for attention. she's hardly interested in attaching herself to a person(Chu-e Choi) she's never met before, who declares their lack of company dramatically to a room of ghosts. it's flashy, and a little sad. nonetheless, it's drawn her attention away from howard, who may or may not be hiding under the table nearby. only briefly though, as absinthe finds her attention once again caught by the admin and a gaggle of observers.[break][break]

"do you have brain damage?" absinthe mutters, head tilting slightly as the realization dawns that howard has come to this place and failed to properly bring a mask. a paper bag over his head is the sort of slapdash solution she would expect from him, especially considering the eye holes are asymmetrical and haphazardly poked through.[break][break]

his eyepatch is visible too, which... might defeat the purpose of the mask entirely? then again, nobody here would likely know the precise appearance of howard slayte's eye patch.[break][break]

she's not supposed to know he's here. and yet. the thought he's here and she doesn't know is almost funny enough to make her snort.[break][break]

then, when she sees him raise from beneath the tablecloth, absinthe decides to add gas to the fire. she gestures broadly to howard and meets Chu-e Choi's gaze. "oh, look. i've found a perfect dance partner for you."[break][break]

absinthe grabs a flute of champagne from a nearby haunter and its pattern and leans up against ornate curtains, meeting Adrian Malcolm's eyes with the slightest nod of her head. parties bore her—sometimes one must make their own fun.

The invitation finds him despite his best efforts to avoid it. paxton concordas isn't much for parties. Not anymore. Not when the last one had gotten him and luciano fisk fighting and ignoring each other for weeks on end. OR well, it was more so Luci ignoring him, and Paxton having a panic attack about it every few days or so. [break][break]

But the invitation kept...finding him. Eerily so. It'd given him chills at one point. But there's only so many times he can say no to studying old architecture under candlelight with a glass of wine. And he was a snoop. The disappearance of the family had made him incredibly curious. He even thought maybe this elaborate scheme was a way to re-debut the family into high society. Not the worst way to draw in a crowd. [break][break]

So he gets dressed in finery he didn't own ( Luci lent it to him ), and heads without telling the man. He's unwilling to stoke the fire that lay dormant within his lover's deep blue eyes. He'd mention the holiday party. Paxton would get annoyed. The disappearance of the family would be ignored, and everyone would go home mad. And lonely. [break][break]

"Augh, that's enough of that." he muttered to himself as he entered the mansion, eyeing the ghostly servants. Some of them cute, others...staring too much for his liking. Probably the guard dogs. He didn't expect an answer, but he asked anyway as he followed a Drifloon to the main hall where the party seemed to be at full swing. "Did you come out of those portals that're rumored to pop up on occasion?" He offered a small grin to the ghost who, naturally ,said nothing. But it did loosen its gentle grip on his wrist and set him loose on the dance floor. [break][break]

But dancing is pretty boring without a partner so he carefully avoids it, moving by the edges and scooping up a wine glass as he did. Luckily the mask he donned allowed his room to eat and drink as he pleased. He skirts by glancing up at the décor and the paintings. The finishes on the wood and the strange aesthetic the Rennard's had chosen to create their home with. Eventually, he ends up by the instruments, more than happy to indulge in his red wine and watch the instruments move. A couple of green apple, gummy eyeballs bob in his drink.

They say that war is profitable, but that was only true if you weren’t one of the soldiers waging it. On the ground, you were wrapped up in the great machine, left with the devastation. It meant a lot of things: people had to flee their homes, rebuild their lives…[break][break]

And most importantly, Alba had not had the budget to buy a nice mask for this fancy masquerade party. The costume shop plastic made his face itch, and while he could at least disguise the elastic with his white hair, it still dug in just a little too tightly. But the rules were you couldn’t take it off, and so he would suffer through the tragedy of mild discomfort for the sake of drinking spooky (expensive?) alcohol and eating cocktail sausages shaped like tiny ghosts in a manor he couldn’t afford.[break][break]

He’s just about to poke his head into the commotion around one of the tables, but as he closes the distance, he’s pretty sure he hears the voices of not one, but two of his bosses. Honestly he shouldn’t be surprised that one or two of them had shown up, but also Howard — that was Howard, right — was wearing a paper bag over his head and had just emerged from under the tablecloth, which wasn’t really the kind of horror he was looking for from Hollowcrest Hall.[break][break]

“No, thank you…” So he turns on his heel, and slinks off to see if he can figure out the floating instruments. And maybe grab another drink. …Maybe another tiny ghost cocktail sausage as well.

howard slayte is the center of attention as always, slinking away only drawing more attention. Did the man not know that showing weakness was like showing blood in shark infested waters? A silly little man. Chu-e had been content to ignore him for the night, let Howard have his own fun, but it seems that Howard is hiding from him and...[break][break]

Well, Chu-e did so love to stir the pot.[break][break]

"He doesn't deserve to dance with me. Not after what he dared try in bed last night." Is taunted in answer to Absinthe Blackwood, Chu-e turning to face away from the small group. Chu-e relished in knowing exactly how that sounded. The real crime had been the other stealing the blanket.[break][break]

Chu-e is about to wander elsewhere when yapping and sparks catch his attention. A grateful look is shot at Cillian Quinn as he leans down to pat the small dog.[break][break]

"I think I've already found my dance partner anyway." Holding out a hand in Eris Halla' direction, he nods to her from across the space of the hall. An invitation, if she so accepted.[break][break]
