The clacking of keys was a short-lived sound; within a few moments most of the necessary information had been entered into both Zev Harcourt and Neffatari Nzingha's files. It was easy considering the scientist already had a profile within ROCKET's database. She was already being watched, as almost everyone was at Mossdeep Space Center.[break][break]

To Zev's question the admin quirked an innocent brow.[break][break]

"No, I haven't, but..." He smiled, more devious than congenial. A flicker of candlelight in his eye from the CHANDELURE in the corner added to the effect.[break][break]

"I was just thinking," There was obvious humor in his voice now. Arceus, what was he about to say?[break][break]

"Isn't she too pretty for you?"[break][break]

What a way to deflect. Hopefully it wouldn't lead to Zev choking him out with taloned, crystal-tipped fingers. That would definitely be bad and not at all something ~~Dove~~ Barnaby would want...

RESURFACED TREASURE & ITS REPERCUSSIONS[break][break]
As I explore a more openly villainous Barnaby, RT really gave me the opportunity to impact LEAGUE characters in long-lasting ways. Barnaby injured both jack wainwright and Neffatari Nzingha in fairly traumatic encounters, leaving one with a grudge that he gets to address in a later battle and the other with an experience that eventually gets back to Zev Harcourt. Barnaby quickly finds out that Neffatari Nzingha is Zev's wife, but doesn't share the fact that he was the one that hurt her. Will this come back to haunt him later?[break][break]

Post-RT, the grip WO-CHIEN has on Elisabeth Fiorelli has loosened. She returns to Barnaby's penthouse and welcomes him home with a warm meal and an even warmer confession. FORGET-ME-NOT is a long-awaited return to something resembling their relationship pre-Avatarship. Elisa is more open with her feelings now — but is it love? Whatever it is, Barnaby is pleased to see her affection for him deepening.

"That's fine. You can pay up later tonight, then." There was quite a laundry list of things she'd promised him in their escalating series of bets. But BARNABY FINCH knew that Elisabeth Fiorelli would make good on what she owed, no matter how much she huffed in the interim. [break][break]

"Enjoy the rest of the party." He called out after her — parting words that were fondly invoked to the underboss' back as she stomped away to Xiura Balfaltin's bar.[break][break]

Elisabeth's exit left him in want of someone else to play with. He leaned back in his chair, scanning the room at large from the poker table he'd sponsored. Many familiar faces materialized from the crowd, though there were just as many strangers as well. That was a given, considering the size of their organization.[break][break]

Admin Bee hoped to become acquainted with at least a few more members tonight.[break][break]

Speaking of, a newer ROCKET happened to hook his attention, in no small part because he had something Barnaby wanted, silver platter and all. That was the silver lining of this entire mess of a reunion. Caleb Harcourt knew of his celebrity persona, but not his true identity. Still, it was more than Barnaby ever wanted him to know. [break][break]

There was more, though. An impassioned admittance that he hadn't seen coming, followed by a feverish, rough kiss. [break][break]

For a moment, Barnaby almost gave in to the other man's aching withdrawal. It spoke to a need and a time long past — one that he'd tried hard to forget, but that Caleb insisted on dredging back to the present.[break][break]

His tongue slipped past Barnaby's lips, pressing in with such urgency, such hunger, that the admin briefly kissed him back. [break][break]

Anger and indignation quickly overtook that lapse in judgement, however.[break][break]

How dare he lay his fucking hands on me.[break][break]

Barnaby bit down — hard — on Caleb's bottom lip, ushering in the familiar taste of blood. He coupled this with a strong push against the ranger's chest in an attempt to put some space between them.[break][break]

Taking her wrist in hand, he started with her index finger, savoring the saccharine taste as his tongue edged upward from palm to manicured nail. Next was her middle finger, which slid smoothly into the warm bower of his mouth; saliva met skin, melting both sugar and resolve all at once.[break][break]

The branches of large, kelp-like trees swayed like ribbons on a breeze, though there was a distinct lack of wind in this liminal space. It was an unsettling thing - much like THEO BECKETT's response.[break][break]

The underboss' words were hard to swallow for a man so staunchly devoted to carving out control over his life. Barnaby detested the thought of relying on others for his own survival.[break][break]

"How can we, in good conscience, work towards those goals while ignoring impending calamity?"[break][break]

As they delved deeper into the icy cavern, darkness began to creep around them at all sides. There were fewer and fewer cracks in the ceiling for natural light to spill through, necessitating a more artificial approach. Barnaby released his ILLUMINA STARMIE to remedy the problem.[break][break]

Their body glistened with a lustrous illumination, casting the cave walls in a soft violet hue, not dissimilar in color to the very book that brought them here.[break][break]

"He's a formidable man. He has to be to orchestrate an organization like ours," Unspoken was the admin's reservations about some of declan walsh's decisions, including those surrounding 99943 METENO, like Aurelie Lefevre.[break][break]

"But no, I wouldn't say I know him well."[break][break]

Barnaby shifted the bag strapped across his shoulder, which contained monitoring equipment meant to be set up a little further into Shoal Cave.[break][break]

"We meet as often as you might expect. Leadership makes it a point to commune regularly and disseminate information between the different departments." Sometimes Walsh was present for those meetings, sometimes not.[break][break]

"I think he's an adequate leader. Rocket has gained ground in Hoenn under his superintendence by taking Sootopolis. We've amassed power in ways unheard of in other branches. I've been able to build and expand my information network, in no small part because of his support."[break][break]

howard slayte was right. The Tera Crystals posed an uneasy problem for Hoenn, despite their tantalizing potential. They were like mistletoe staunchly clamped to the branching tunnels of the region: parasitic, poisonous, pervasive. [break][break]

"Easily? Unlikely." For a moment Barnaby paused to toe a nearby crystal with the blunt edge of his boot. It refused to move from where it jutted from the earth.[break][break]

"It would take a mighty effort. They've already dispersed to nearly every corner of the region. Controlling their spread will be difficult..." he lifted a thoughtful finger to his lips.[break][break]

"...Unless we find the source of their power, perhaps."[break][break]

BARNABY FINCH was no scientist by any means. All he could do was throw out ideas and hope some of them stuck.[break][break]

"Are they like mycelium, branching from a central core? Destroying that could destroy the crystals in turn. Or... as you said, something born from similar stock, like the birds, could possibly have a greater influence over them."

Displaced frustration, perhaps. It seemed that with every crumb of possible explanation came an added mystery to be written on the list of inexplicable things occurring in Hoenn. The VIOLET BOOK was no exception.[break][break]

"The tales inside provide physical evidence of the collective dream many of us shared," Several of the things inscribed within the tome were familiar to BARNABY FINCH. "So at least we have proof that those events were not a conjured fiction."[break][break]

Oh all the things Zev Harcourt could have said, that was by far one of the lowest on Barnaby's list of guesses.[break][break]
