Barnaby's blood chilled upon seeing the monstrous claw cleave through the mist. He took one step back, then another, as the creature stood to its full height. [break][break]

Had they honestly just manifested NECROZMA, of all Pokémon?[break][break]

No, not they. Zev. And as BARNABY FINCH glanced at his companion, he wondered if there was a look of excitement behind the cold mask her wore. This was his patron, after all, was it not?[break][break]

Would that connection stop the thing from attacking them? [break][break]

Before they could test that theory, a voice rang out through the smog. A man resembling Zev Harcourt — but older, grizzlier, and looking antiquated, in a way. Following him was a vaguely familiar, cunning-looking bird. The sight of it brought pulsing memories back to the surface of Barnaby's mind.[break][break]

But that wasn't the end of this grand parade. After the Galarian ARTICUNO came a ghostly rider astride a galloping SPECTRIER, his own bow at the ready. Eerie blue flames blazed at the tip of the arrow drawn back on the bowstring, poised to be shot at the avian monster. The rider was beautiful, with flowing raven hair and piercing cobalt eyes that flashed with the thrill of the hunt.[break][break]

"This mist is conjuring quite fantastical dreams now, I see." Barnaby commented, content to stay on the sidelines while the storybook scene unfolded before them.

Efficiency bred perfection. Their routine had been successful up until this point — therefore, there was no need to stop now. So, when a HYDREIGON flew within the perimeter of their attack zone, ALAKAZAM commenced its PSYCHIC hold as it'd done to the other dozens of Pokémon.[break][break]

All the while, BARNABY FINCH was on reconnaissance duty, making sure nothing escaped his notice. The eyepieces of a pair of binoculars were pressed against the holes of his mask. Everything seemed ordinary until a shape in the distance began to take form.[break][break]

Barnaby stilled, cranking the dial at the side of his binoculars to zoom in closer.[break][break]

Then, a chilling bark of a laugh escaped the ROCKET admin.[break][break]

"Isaac Merlo, you fucking traitor." He muttered before releasing his SHADOW STEELIX to the dunes below.[break][break]

Immediately, the gigantic, crystalline serpent used MAGNET RISE to easily glide over sand and rock, in hot pursuit toward the ROCKET defector.

Well, shit. BARNABY FINCH wasn't fool enough to deny when he'd been bested. Where his arrow clinked off plated armor as if it were a child's toy, freya morningstar's own projectile... well, had a much more shocking effect.[break][break]

Digging heels urged Lucien on, painfully goading the CHARIZARD out of range of whatever the dragonrider had in store for them — but it wasn't enough. In a flurry of aerial acrobatics the woman and her SALAMENCE were beneath them.[break][break]

Suddenly, arching bolts of electricity found purchase on dark-scaled flesh and upward to Barnaby himself. Pain radiated along every limb and settled as a fiery blaze within the admin's torso, causing him to almost lose his grip on the CHARIZARD's neck.[break][break]

Lucien fared even worse. His entire body locked up, PARALYZED from the shock, and began plummeting to the sea below. To freya morningstar, it may have seemed like an easy victory.[break][break]

Just before the pair hit the water, however, a blinding energy enveloped them. Within seconds the CHARIZARD emerged in a new light, having MEGA EVOLVED to shed its paralysis. Faster now, it raced upward toward the SALAMENCE, its jaw unhinged to release a DRAGON BREATH toward the enemy.

"Once more into the breach." The admin echoed, sounding more amused this time rather than unimpressed.[break][break]

That amusement quickly faded as the smog around them coalesced into a... startling familiar scene.[break][break]

She was right, of course. The mist merged the two cities in an almost seamless way, their token monuments opposed at either side of the boulevard.[break][break]

The sundial on one end was a blazing red the color of a stoked flame, immaculate and glistening in the afternoon sun. Prism Tower was its chromatic opposite, composed of cool steel and illuminated by vibrant greens and yellows.[break][break]

This was not ideal. BARNABY FINCH could guess why Lumiose City, of all places, was manifesting now — it was his cherished hometown, after all.[break][break]

But he preferred that no one knew that, unless they had the security clearance to do so. Aurelie Lefevre most decidedly did not.[break][break]

"The mist has a way of bringing ones desires to the forefront." He explained, still calm despite his inward frustration at this inconvenience.[break][break]

"I assume you were born in Kalos? Or have some sort of emotional connection to it?" Barnaby asked, deflecting from his own connection to the region.

The ground beneath their feet began to quake and break into sheets of parched earth, prompting Barnaby to release his BRAVIARY, who whisked him into the air before the attack could do more than dirty his boots.[break][break]

"It can't be helped!" [break][break]

They'd been caught by the enemy and were now under fire — literally, as a small flock of TALONFLAME cloaked in flames charged in toward them (FLAME CHARGE). One directed itself at Kouji Matsubara, the other two at BARNABY FINCH astride his BRAVIARY.[break][break]

All that was left to do now was fight their way through.[break][break]

Seeing his subordinate vulnerable to attack, Barnaby directed his Pokémon to use ESPER WING; blades of psychic energy thrust forward, knocking the TALONFLAME off course and into the ground below, close to where Kouji stood.[break][break]

This left time for the other two TALONFLAME to act and, despite some aerial acrobatics on the BRAVIARY's part, they clipped his eagle's wing, causing them both to careen out and almost hit the ground themselves.

"It's hard to tell," Barnaby admitted, walking with the medic toward the makeshift camp that had been erected. Adrenaline coursed through his veins, numbing the painful effects of the several wounds he'd sustained.[break][break]

When he arrived at what he assumed to be an examination area, the admin began discarding the layers of garments hiding the injuries beneath. First his outer armor, then his tactical jacket; below that was a stiff undershirt, where blossoms of blood had bloomed on the dark fabric.[break][break]

Eventually Barnaby's chest was made bare for marcus kotov. There were more bruises than lacerations, but it was obvious that some form of blunt trauma had occurred. [break][break]

BARNABY FINCH left others to toil over the mechanisms of the pressure plates. His duty was on the periphery, guiding their naval forces along the boundaries of the island. The ROCKET admin remained at the bridge of the largest vessel, where he had a bird's eye view of a... particularly prickly annoyance.[break][break]

Navy eventually made his way to the deck of the ship, howling brazen taunts like a man who desperately needed his ass beaten.[break][break]

"Cocky, aren't you?" A masked Barnaby goaded back from on high, looking down from the upper deck along the outside of the bridge.[break][break]

On the admin's shoulder was a SKY FORM SHAYMIN, who immediately took flight upon hearing a light cluck of Barnaby's tongue. A sharp whistle saw the small Pokémon careen above Navy's URSHIFU, well out of punching range, and expel a LEECH SEED that fell like small bombs onto the deck below.

This time was... better. Not perfect, but not as poor of a display as before.[break][break]

With its mouth shackled by its mask, the TYPE: NULL relied on its insectoid claws to slap the FEEBAS out of the water. It flopped on the shore, terribly distressed, at Barnaby's feet. An absentminded flick of his wrist found the thing captured in a Safari Ball, but really the admin's attention was on his bionic creature.[break][break]

"Once more. They shouldn't see you coming."[break][break]

He gestured again, this time to a yellow tail sticking out from the brush.[break][break]

Again, he whistled.

thread summary: I'M SORRY I COULDN'T CHOOSE JUST ONE 😩

In PERFECT SHADOWS, Barnaby interrogates an imprisoned Caleb Harcourt. Over the course of the interrogation Caleb admits to more than the ROCKET admin originally expected — namely, a feeling of trust born from their time in GOODBYE GALAR. Barnaby rejects the hazy memories they shared together, rationalizing that time as nothing but a dream, separate from their current reality. Caleb was no longer a king, and Barnaby no longer a courier. The thread ends with Barnaby emphasizing that their roles and dynamic are very different now.

In LE LETHÉ, Barnaby returns home to see Elisabeth Fiorelli raiding his wine cabinet, clearly distraught by something. After a little coaxing, she eventually admits her struggle to him, saying that her two Avatarships with WO-CHIEN and TAPU FINI made her feel owned by them, rather than empowered. In fact, Elisa goes on to reveal many of her secrets, showing just how much she's come to trust and rely on Barnaby.

why is it important?: Both threads allowed me to showcase Barnaby's villainy in ways I haven't gotten to before.

A major device for him as a character is this juggling of facades to get what he wants. He likes to feel in control. Needs to feel in control. And manipulating others is one of the main ways he attempts to do this. I was extremely happy to be able to demonstrate this in Le Lethé, where Barnaby internally judges Elisa for her weakness, but externally feigns affection — to his benefit, in the end. She spills so many of her secrets, which Barnaby will surely use to his advantage at some point in the future.

Though he does care for her, it's more out of a feeling of ownership rather than love. He views her as a possession that can be used, especially now, with her newfound powers as an Avatar.

Speaking of possessions... in Perfect Shadows, I got to be MUCH more overt with this theme of control and ownership of others! This thread probably shows Barnaby at his most authentic. He doesn't need to wear a facade in front of a man destined to die soon. Caleb was relinquished to him by Zev Harcourt; he belongs to him now, as a fun toy to play with before being inevitably broken. I don't get a lot of opportunities to show just how cruel Barnaby can be, so writing out Caleb's physical/psychological torture felt cathartic and needed to flesh out Barnaby as a character.

(Shoutout x2 to Nelle for all the love and care she put into this thread and others! Caleby has been an AMAZING ride so far ♡)

Cobalt eyes fluttered open, seeing Odette fretting by his bedside. A moment of confusion lined his face, proceeded by the reason for his NINETALES' worry — loud, distinct banging coming from downstairs.[break][break]

Something was wrong.[break][break]

The ROCKET admin quickly headed toward the bedroom door, picking up a discarded silken robe thrown across a chair earlier that evening and wrapping it around himself as he made his way to the entryway.[break][break]

He stopped in the foyer to access his security system. Through the monitor Barnaby spied the last person he would have expected at his doorstep.[break][break]

"You must have a death wish," He began, letting the door creak open so that nothing stood between them.[break][break]

"Showing yourself to me here."[break][break]
