One week ago, Angelo had been issued command of a space ship, guiding it to intercept the meteor on its course of promised doom.

Now he stands in Slateport Park, participating in an event that was far more conventional and yet somehow, just as energetic in its own way. With its brightly coloured stalls and the buzz of the local businesses, cheerfully advertising their livelihoods - their passions - that they get to keep on living to anyone who'd listen.

With the vibrancy in the air, it feels like an age had passed since last week, when the Drk Triad's end had been defied.

Hoennians were experienced at bouncing back from a narrowly avoided, region-ending disaster.

Angelo was no exception. Since 99943 Meteno was destroyed (aside from one really good nap) his days had been occupied with the opening of the dome and of the new worlds beyond. Of the changes it brought.

As evident by the Nautica job fair stall, manned by himself and skyler dross .

There are no testers to peddle, simply practical information laid out before them or on a display board, borrowed from Mr Dross after the Cultural Festival earlier this year. On one was a collection of photos documenting some successful jobs and a map of the world, along with the notice underneath:

"ACCEPTING INTERNATIONAL REQUESTS."

Snapping off strips of tape with his teeth, from behind the stall Angelo smooths the sticky film onto the corners of a Hoenn map, fixing them to the table surface. On it, areas are highlighted to symbolise islands and locations found under his (and their) name. As well as red crosses, boldly placed on the new dimensional tears.

It marks his next point of interest, as claimed on a sign affixed to the stall that reads:

"EXPLORATION SERVICES TO 'THE WILDS' NOW AVAILABLE."

Angelo smiles to himself in amusement as an invisible presence straightens up the banner, after a feisty Wingull had tugged the string lopsided.

She waved away Elisa’s compliment with a flick of her wrist, looking around the Job Fair at the other booths.

Considering her past with feisty Zeraoras, angry Shaymins, colossal Melmetals amongst many other legendary encounters, she's sure that her experiences will lend itself to her future endeavours. But for now, she sees the hesitation in Locke Jamison's eyes and she wonders if he thinks it's far too dangerous for her.[break][break]

"Through rain, sleet, or wormhole'- I wanna be able to deliver one of these!" She smiles, pushing at the corners of her lips. "I'll try my bestest to not let you down!"[break][break]

Not that she ever actively planned on doing anything that would. It's just a quiet thought that nags in the back of her mind.[break][break]

"In fact, I can go grab the sandbags! Maybe I'll end up finding our missing buddies along the way?"[break][break]

It doesn't require much more than that for Reiner to slink up to her left, ready to guide her out of harm's way.[break][break]

Zev fell silent as Aurelie exchanged words with an older woman, sending her off with a thorough rejection.[break][break]

"I'll be counting on you then!" they said, offering the younger girl an application of her own. There was a section towards the bottom for a guardian to sign as well, but they wouldn't question how she went about covering that.

A blush suddenly sprung to Locke's cheeks.

"R-Right now? I guess Latias could look like anything," he deflected. "B-But when she left she looked, uh, I guess a bit like me…"

A bit was an understatement. Latias admired all of her new treasures, gleefully adding a third pair of sunglasses to a picture-perfect recreation of Locke's face, which might've gotten tangled in her much longer hair if it weren't an illusion.

It was a form she'd caught her companion wearing one night as he stumbled out of building with a group of other women, and the look on his face when she took it today was enough to encourage the legendary to keep it.

Also the dress was cute.

It flowed around her ankles as she skipped through the fair, gawking at all the different shapes and colors adorning the booths before landing on a familiar-looking design. With a gasp of delight the disguised Latias darted over to the Nautica booth and danced underneath her invisible brother, who was apparently much more diligent in his work than she was.

A KEEN EYE KEEPS WATCH OVER NAUTICA’S BOOTH. from the other side of the park, fernando can make out few details but his concern doesn’t lie in the specifics of their advertisement. it is who stops by and by what measure they engage in that lies at the top of his priorities. despite the familiarity other AQUA MEMBERS have claimed as leverage, he trusts very few of them to do a thorough job.

which is why he tracks their opening from behind his sunglasses.

"Like you, huh... It's like hide and seek, Locke!!" The application form is taken with much enthusiasm, carefully tucked away into her satchel before Reiner begins urging her forwards. "I'll be back with her as soon as I can!"[break][break]

Strange though, why were Locke Jamison's cheeks so red over having Latias look like him? Something about not liking doppelgängers maybe? The thought does bring a few shivers down her spine as she remembers seeing her own self in that strange cyberspace just months prior...[break][break]

Ah well, she'd figure it out! And figure it out she does when she sees a Locke look-alike (A Locke-alike if you will) wandering around the Nautica booth and dancing?[break][break]

"Reiner, we have our Locke number 2 in sight! Rei-" When she looks at him, she sees the way his eyes have dilated and if he was ever to grow pale under that midnight fur, this would be that exact moment. "What are you looki- Oh."[break][break]

Oh feels very much like an understatement when she spies the faint glimmer of a red jewel on a blue tail. And she can see the tiny little hands attempting to reach for the small pieces of tape on the table edge. As they begin peeling off the corners, Rosmontis breaks into a run, sliding very abruptly into the stall and leaping to grab the mischief maker.[break][break]

But Mesprit is a cunning little spirit, taking full advantage of her weaker side to dodge under the table and quickly fly out of reach. She giggles in her usual singsong tone, blowing a raspberry before zipping right behind Latias and hiding in her shadow.[break][break]

"Oh, we are so having the talk after this, missy..." She huffs, getting back to her feet with Reiner's help before dusting herself off. But first, she should probably deal with the whole... jumping right into the stall issue, shouldn't she?[break][break]

"I- uh-" Deep breaths, she clears her throat as she sheepishly looks towards angelo vestri. "Hi there, Mr Vestri! I was uhm..." Her fingers point towards Latias as Reiner slaps a paw over his eyes. "We were looking for Locke's missing assistant?"

Unaware of the stalker in their midst (FERNANDO SILPH ), Skyler leans precariously atop a chair, boots squeaking against plastic as she reaches upwards to straighten the NAUTICA sign.

Any onlooker walking past would notice it being ever so slightly askew, but the captain seems satisfied as she leans back and appraises it, hands on her hips.

"So," her voice drawls, rising over the surrounding din to reach her blue-eyed husband, "we're just supposed to- wait for people?"

She doesn't seem too impressed by the idea.

Ever since creating NAUTICA, Skyler had undergone several traumatizing situations. Nightmares of being consumed by mountains of unredable documents and legal jargon had become worryingly common as of late.

Maybe they should get someone to do that job for them. (Skyler herself wouldn't be opposed to finding some sailor types to join her maritime expeditions - and swab the deck. Watch out, Cyrus Halbrook .)

A list of NAUTICA's services is nailed to one of stall's wooden posts, free of decoration save for their logo. Pictures of three ships follow below:

The Sotally Tober, warship.
The Bottoms Up, salvaging ship.
The Dorado, speedboat.

The latter's namesake had found the perfect ambush location beneath the NAUTICA table, feline pupils expanding rapidly as a target is acquired. The Galarian Meowth fluffs up, tracking its unfortunate prey with the grace of a top tier predator.

Without warning, Dorado pounces on female!Locke Jamison 's shoes, missing by an inch when she moves. Plan foiled, the deranged cat immediately darts out of sight behind the stall - likely awaiting his next victim.

"Hey, cutie," Skyler greets Latias, recognition morphing into an affectionate grin. "Gettin' into much trouble?"

“Well, you can always head out and hit up the crowd, if you want.” Comes the suggestion, as silken as the gaze that peruses Skyler balancing on the chair. “Pull 'em in with the Dross charm.”

There may be a thinly veiled tease lingering beneath his advice, but it's still a sound suggestion.

Maybe they could hook in a secretary if they went out there. It had been a fantasy as of late, taking a lighter to the piles of paperwork that seemed to regrow in the Nautica office overnight...

Angelo's focus is dragged away from mundane business woes when he feels a playful energy radiate from Latios. Blue eyes looking over to witness a familiar girl nearly being attacked by Dorado. (Why was he here when he was a renowned little bastard?)

On recognising female!Locke Jamison however, a warm smile is brought to Angelo's lips.

Invisible, Latios reaches down towards his sister's head and attempts to mess up her long dark hair, floating out of the way each time.

“Look who it is.” Ducking out from behind the stall, the Nautica co-owner heads over to join the Eon siblings. “Is this a new getup? C'mon, give us a spin, Ms Assistant.”

His hand extends towards the disguised legendary, fingers taking hold where her claw ought to be and leads Latias into an energetic twirl like an older brother would at a dance.

There's a flicker of pride for how well she'd been mastering her disguise ability with Locke Jamison.

“If Delibird Deliveries are treating you this well, I might have to start charging you rent.”

His attention is then drawn towards a small figure who'd run up to the Nautica stall with a familiar Luxray.

Unaware of the kid's real motives for a disguise, he goes along with the assumed narrative that she's dressing up for shits and giggles.

“And who's this, trouble? A friend of yours?” He asks 'Lottie', humouring Eris Halla.

It was all surely a very incriminating sight for local businessman turned spy, FERNANDO SILPH.

“Like a marriage proposal?” Cyg asked, stepping from behind the booth to inch towards ~~freedom~~ exploring the rest of the fair for her own curiosity. “That depends. If she’s a simple gal, then yeah, absolutely. If she’s already high-maintenance it’d be insulting but I feel like Eva is. Not.” She shrugged. “I mean… she just seems the type to know what she’s about, you know?”

Kind of like her, fancy clothes aside.

“I’m gonna go bother some other people, see if I can’t pick up any engine work. Feed the inner grease monkey. Text me if you need me, boss. Nice seeing you, Matias. Good luck popping the questioooon!” She waved and almost skipped off, coffee curled close to her chest.

There was a small crowd gathering in front of a booth labeled NAUTICA and she wasn’t at all keen on canoodling until she saw the word ‘ship’ in triplicate posted to one of the information boards. The promise of superchargers and UNIC sumps reeled her in like a particularly dumb fish and she hovered outside the general chaos for a second, waiting her turn, until curiosity got the better of her and she pushed around two (apparently) small children (who had no business having jobs, honestly, what a world they lived in) to step up to the booth.

“Hi, hey, sorry to line budge, I was just wondering what kinda engine your, uh, warship has? Also, Sotally Tober, excellent name.”

"I'll have you know," Skyler's chin tilts just so, a huff following in the wake of her words, "that I have plenty of charm, thank you very much." And maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea, to wander the fair. Arceus knew Skyler could already feel the restless itch under her skin, begging her to do something other than stand here and look... something other than pretty.

Another kid (a real one this time) joins the small crowd gathering around Angelo, and Skyler silently thanks whatever deity may be out there that he's the face of the operation. She doesn't recognize Eris Halla , though she does find it curious that the kid asks Angelo for Locke Jamison 's assistant, of all things. Does she know something?

Skyler's getting ready to go, hand set on Angelo's shoulder to catch his attention, when a blonde (ana fell ) cuts past the gathering people - kids included - to reach their booth. The captain wouldn't have thought much of it, but then the most beautiful words leave the blonde's mouth.

Immediately all thoughts of leaving the booth evaporate. Hopelessly reeled in, Skyler doesn't realize the unbridled enthusiasm that curls her mouth into a smile when she approaches the girl.

"She's a beaut, ain't she?" Skyler pats the picture, and it's impossible to miss the pride in her voice. "Got her a few years back. Was about to be decommissioned too. Retrofitted her with a bit of an odd engine. Diesel, but only partly. Most of the work done on her enables self-sufficient systems, including all the electrics and navigation." Breathe, Skyler, breathe. "We got a special boiler for it. Betty." Then, realizing how odd that must sound, she smiles ruefully at the blonde and continues. "Uh, she's a Heatran."

Not often you see a Heatran-fueled ship engine.

Blondie's curiosity is not lost on Skyler. The captain's enthusiasm sharpens into interest as she briefly surveys the other blonde. Evaluating. The smell of coffee waffles in her direction, mouth-watering. "You do ship work?"

No matter how small or faint, that voice and glint of familiarity tells her that angelo vestri might just happen to have a clue of who she is. And as she slips a side glance towards Reiner, he merely scrunches his nose and sticks his tongue out. Why wouldn't he? After all, skyler dross is probably the bigger threat of the duo, considering her likelihood to mercilessly dunk on a child.[break][break]

Angelo would at least have the grace to pit her against 5 Gyarados and let her live her wildest dreams.[break][break]

"Well... I'm Rosmontis and uhm... technically she and I have never met in person before but Locke said that she probably wandered off while trying to get sandbags for their stall?"[break][break]

Where was her usual minor league gym leader confidence? The ability to pull out the most whimsical of sentences without batting an eye? All gone in the face of a little Mesprit hovering right above Angelo's head and attempting to braid a few small bunches of hair. And it really doesn't help that the Lake Guardian keeps trying to signal for Latias to join in on the fun. Try as hard as she might to hold it in, Rosmontis can't help but snicker.[break][break]

"I- Uhm... S- so, what do you have going on here?" Her words are jittered by bouts of barely-hidden giggles, her attention turned to the map as if it might help draw Angelo's attention away from his impromptu hairstyle appointment. "Exploring far off lands? Looking for old ruins and treasures? If I end up wanting help to find some strange island... would you accept having all the treasure found as payment?"

Aww! Look at him sleeping! Probably dreaming about sugar plums, unguided drones, and pinless hand grenades! Then again, the guy looked pretty young. So, maybe, he was still in the honeymoon phase. The one that came before you realized it wasn’t just your time you signed away.

“Hey, sleeping beauty.” He gestured vaguely to the dark-haired man’s head “Find a purple Ponyta yet?”

The biting comment was met with laughter” Oz grinned. At least someone in the ranks kept their sense of humor, even if he hadn’t been joking. Capitalism might be screwed up, but usually, it didn’t get people shot. And their advertised benefits were 401Ks and Dole Whip machines, not ‘courage,’ ‘patriotism,’ and ‘purpose.’

The Tweet was off on the internet along with the recruiting picture. “Kind of a side effect of treating people like cogs.” Sure, he guessed he had something to thank the fatigues for. This town wasn’t an apocalyptic wasteland right now. The question drew out another sharp smile. “Not today, amigo.” Gosh, this guy was a kid. Really was hard imagining him putting his life on the line. “I’ll just set my own money on fire.”

One gloved hand plucked a pamphlet from a nearby rack.

His head tilted at one particular photo. A soldier crawling through a mud pit with a Stoutland on the the bank and a toothpaste commercial grin. The whites of the soldier’s teeth were blinding. “You guys must have really good dental, huh?”

So she was Rosmontis today, was she?

His wife may think her an annoying gnat but Angelo saw Eris Halla as nothing more than a child who had a knack for popping up in places she didn't really belong.

A little kid playing make believe, in which he has thus far humoured from the softer part of his heart.

He'd simply played caretaker to younger siblings long enough to know how to artfully not come across as patronising.

“Well, Rosmontis, it looks you managed to track her down for them. Minus the sandbags.” An eyebrow sarcastically rises towards Latias, tilting his chin to her collection of sunglasses. “An easy mix up to make.”

For Locke Jamison 's sanity he hoped they were free samples.

His attention curiously diverts when a hand is felt upon his shoulder, only to find skyler dross already drifting away. He leaves her to proudly chat the ear off ana fell with an affectionate crinkle in the corner of his eye.

Although they all end up bunched together in front of the Nautica stall, regardless.

He chuckles. “That's a very generous cut, Ms Rosmontis.”

Or a rather foolish one, from a client perspective.

A fingertip draws an attentive line across the map he'd made, from Slateport to a splatter of islands in the blue. “But how would you guarantee that there's treasure to even find? If that's your only method of payment and nothing comes of it or it takes months to locate the island you're looking for, how would I be able to fund the expedition?”

Planes and ships could not be run on dreams and chance.

“We'd set our rates based on the request and then any treasure found would be split by an agreed percentage with the client. So, as tempting as your one hundred percent offer is, I'll have to pass today.”

Without looking, Angelo reaches behind him and swats at the ticklish sensation at the back of his head. An unconscious action, after living with an invisible troublemaker for so long.

Speaking of...

“I'll walk Lottie back to Locke for you. I need to talk to them, anyway.”
