The light shimmered around the fairy as the illusion faded away, starting from the back and gathering up towards her mouth in a swirling sphere. Locke stared at the check on his table. 's signature decorated the bottom of the slip of paper, but other than that it was entirely empty.

Mr. Rose had said they could take no less than a million, and no more than thirty million, as if that wasn't such a ridiculous range of money the courier could hardly visualize it. They'd practiced writing out random amounts on a napkin, but every time they got to the fourth zero their hand would shake too much to finish neatly, every number ending in a mess of anxious scribbles.

Between one million and thirty million…

Locke sighed, locking the still-blank check safely away in their desk for another day.

Locke was, as usual, behind the rest of the region when it came to this kind of stuff.

A small detour to avoid a road blockage had led him to an odd sight-a glass-like crystal about the size of a softball embedded in a small crater, likely of its own making. It reminded him a bit of the mega shard veins that had appeared a couple years ago, before the majority of them had been excavated and processed into the stones most everyone else used now.

This formation lacked the multi-colored swirls of mega shards, however. Instead its many facets gleamed in various shades of orange-not unlike a fire stone-and radiated enough heat to melt the snow in a decently-sized radius around it.
