THE BALLROOM OPENS



Opening ceremonies have ended, and with them, the masquerade begins in earnest. The Anvil Inc. security guards step aside to allow the masked event coordinator through the main doors, where the opening floor of the museum has been cleared for ballroom dancing. Any attendees riding Pokemon, such as , are politely asked to dismount, as the ballroom is at full capacity this evening.[break][break]

One or two participants have dared enter early, but the name is one difficult to refuse entry in Slateport. The councilman's misbehavior opens the door for other misconduct, though and would find the Insectarium to be filled with over-worked staff attempting to finalize preparations for dining later in the evening, and their arrival would not be a well-received one.[break][break]


DECEMBER WALTZ


Here in the ballroom, there will be no want for music. and his well-prepared orchestra have ensured it.[break][break]

Light, festive melodies filter through the vicinity as live musicians begin to play, their dulcet notes beckoning the new arrivals to the centre of the dance floor.[break][break]

Some might recognize the first song to be an arrangement of Elite Four 's holiday hit, "All I Want for Christmas is You", which seems to pervade every part of Hoenn during the winter season. Playing it first seems tradition, although soon, the musical selections shift to orchestral renditions of modern pop music.[break][break]

Of the many other songs to be played this evening, an instrumental version of Tervaolt's "As It Was" stands out, a once lesser-known hit now made famous by Elite Four 's performance.[break][break]

It is a wide-ranging repertoire, inspired by a playful fusion of genres as eclectic as the skillset of the man overseeing their performance. With so many skilled musicians assisting in its direction, would be more than able to enjoy the dancing himself, without lacking for a rhythm to follow.


SPARKLING WINE[break]& CONVERSATION


Chandelure provide a faint, charming glow to the proceedings, their muted light a flattering one to all attendees regardless of what their masks may hide.[break][break]

Wallflowers may, if they wish, linger near the walls, where sparsely arranged plush seating can be found to invite pockets of conversation. Wandering near, several Bulbasaur wearing bowties uphold delicate trays between the sturdy grip of vines, bearing sparkling beverages as well as platters of hors d'oeuvres for those feeling peckish.[break][break]

For those desiring something a bit more stiff, an elaborate bar that puts the foyer's refreshments to shame has been established at the far end of the room, tended to by staff from 's Howling at the Moon.[break][break]

Garlands and wreaths ornament this splendid place, but sprigs of mistletoe are also rumored to also be placed within this gathering, for those fortunate or unfortunate enough to stumble upon this holiday tradition.[break][break]

The night is still young, and a masquerade is nothing without the opportunity to meet, mingle, and waltz.

's parting statement rang in Gunner's ears as extended the silver flask toward him. The offer was tempting, and in any other circumstance, he may have capitulated to the taunt in her familiar voice. But he had his own vodka tonic in hand, and anyway, he was technically working.[break][break]

"I'll pass this time," he told her, raising his glass to emphasize his point. "If we find ourselves out on the high seas again, though, I'll make up for tonight."[break][break]

Of course, he was only guessing. Perhaps he had guessed wrong and she was a woman he'd never met before.[break][break]

When Skyler turned to , Gunner took the opportunity to slip away, weaving his way through the crowd as they began filtering into the ballroom that had just opened. Just outside its doors, he paused, catching sight of a woman in a striking green dress. With its high neck and long sleeves, it was very different from what other ladies were wearing.[break][break]

If he had known its wearer was none other than , Gunner would have thought it fitting. The low cuts and cinched waists of sweeping gowns did not seem to suit her. But the whole ensemble successfully hid her identity from him, and he soon moved on, entering the ballroom with the crowd.[break][break]

Gunner was taking a sip of his cocktail when another kind of dress caught his eye — one he'd encountered before. He fell into step beside and leaned in so she could hear him over the conversation and music. "Care for a dance?"

Weaving effortlessly through the crowd, the masked man in black makes his way to the bar at the end of the room. Once there, he orders a GRAVEDIGGER from one of the HOWLING AT THE MOON bartenders present. The taste of vodka, berries, and pecha liquer grace his lips sweet.

Content to stand beside the bar's counter and enjoy his libation for a bit longer, Remiel casts a gaze over the pairs steadily beginning to form at the center of the ballroom floor. It wasn't long ago that he might have been one of the first as well... with . With so much loss and trauma in the wake of recent events, however, the idea of going out there now seemed quite foolish and fake. Disrespectful, even.

He'll linger here at the bar and watch them gather for a bit longer, however. Eventually, the masked prince plans to visit one of the several exhibits prepared for the occasion.

Niky chuckled at the fish out of water. "Aw, buddy, if you're more than forty, you age super well, I can only hope I'll age just as gracefully. Come on handsome..." obliged the musician to the bar, and they were soon approached by another that knew his escort. While the guy did lean away, Niky knew it wasn't out of rudeness, just to say something in private. The blonde waited politely as he got a glass of Charja-Cola. No alcohol until after their performance. Once they were done with a tiny chat, Niky asked the man some questions. "So sweety, what do you do for a living? I don't get gigs like this very often, but it seemed fun a bit different. I'm one of the orchestra peeps. But I run a modest record shop in Rustboro and do DJ work on the side usually. Oh, and I'm Niky." Was he trying a little bit to get a feel for the guy? Yeah...he was interested in the man. Might as well see if he would bite and maybe oblige the young man.

Sadly, shortly after, the music started. Pouting at the awful timing, Niky spoke again to the man. "Sorry, it seems the music is starting, so I need to get into position. I'll be finding you later for a dance if interested?" He gave the plain looking a guy a hopeful look, before waiting a beat to hear an answer and scurry off to 's Christmas song. Such a lovely voice she has...a duet with her would be a dream come true. When it came to their turn, he started off with an unusual choice.

Orchestra version of his Bad Guy song started. After it was done, his Bad Habits in a orchestrae cover went along. And the third one for their first stint was one of 's rock songs.

As the adrenaline buzz from their entrance starts to wane, Cyg starts to feel nervous.

She doesn’t belong here, she really doesn’t. She belongs at home, on the couch, with a pack of Leinie’s and scrolling on her phone to catch the highlights from an event like this, judging the attendees and how they dressed from the safety of her own abode.

She doesn’t do this kind of thing sober.

Scanning the crowd, she pegs pretty easily, but their relationship isn’t exactly the adhering type. Besides, he’s with his-- his wife? Fiancee? Hadn’t they been talking about proposing? Maybe he hadn’t done it yet. She also didn’t want to abandon Isaac because she was part of the reason they were here in the first damn place.

She doesn’t miss giving her the eye (though she doesn’t know who the fuck he is, and isn’t sure if it’s a good eye or a bad eye). She resists the urge to flip him the bird because that is not what is done in polite company.

The ballroom opens. Cyg exhales and tenses in equal measure. She doesn’t know how to dance. Doing the wobble with a sea of drunk white folks at a polebarn wedding does not count.

A little Bulbasaur passes with a tray of alcoholic beverages and Cyg grabs the first one that looks vaguely tossable and pauses just before she does just that.

“I’d ask you to dance but I don’t know how,” she says, frowning apologetically as she sips her drink, like a normal fucking human being. “I probably should’ve said that beforehand but, uh. I thought it would be more negotiable and less of a main event.”

"Do ya even need to ask? Who would turn down a nice drink?" Even if he himself wasn't much of a drinker himself he would have to imagine that they would have some really fancy drinks at a party like this. Although while he was ready to indulge her it seemed the party staff beat them to the punch as the announcement of the moving of the festivities went on.

Music started to reach the ears of the masses and Kaz couldn't help but feel the beat move his body as one of his legs started to twitch with excitement at the prospect of dancing. However what caught his full attention was the sight of a bar opening up and the timing couldn't be more perfect that he brought out in light laughter. "Looks like they read our minds! Allow me."

With that he quickly made his way over to the bar and order two drinks, one that caught his eye by the name alone and brought back two glasses back to with a grin on his face as he offered one of the glasses of Gravedigger to her. "This one sounded pretty hard. Grrrravedigger. Guy at the bar made it sound like one with a bit of flavor."

With that he took a sip of the drink and with a hard swallow he smacked his lips and even licked them. Then he took another sip. "Oh yeah. That really-that really does have some flavor to it. Real fruity. I kinda like it."

Girard had not necessarily arrived at the masquerade with any kind of agenda, but upon spying early on, he had started to formulate a somewhat devious plan. Why he could not stop thinking about her, he could not say...she was pretentious, haughty, and acted as if she despised him...any ordinary man would immediately deem her too high maintenance, not worth the effort despite her beauty.[break][break]

Clad in a violet evening gown and blossom-adorned mask in matching hue, Xiura politely handed her invitation to the masked person at the entrance to the museum, hurrying inside so that she could see all the decorations. Everything was quite lovely, from the snowflakes printed on the luxuriously heavy cardstock to the wintry decorations of the ballroom. She hoped to be able to dance, though she was without a date.

However! Dancing aside, business needed to come before pleasure.

As her first (and only) point of order, she sidled over to the bar where a couple of bartenders were steeping some tea. Under her sidelong supervision, they poured steaming black and green teas into porcelain cups. They were served piping-hot on matching saucers to a seated couple, who thanked the server and started sipping in between bits of conversation. Xiura nodded in approval, then turned around, only to be faced by another server.

"Oh!" she said, mildly startled after being so focused on the reception to her teas.

"May we help you, miss?" he said, gesturing to the teapots. "We have teas for your refreshment if you so desire."

Her identity was on the line if she were to linger too long around the teas. Which was quite the opposite of the purpose of a masquerade. "Oh, no, I'll try some, er, alcohol!" she eventually said, picking up a sparkling champagne glass from the tray he was holding, gathering up her skirts, and scurrying off briskly.

Catching her breath by a trio of Bulbasaur carrying hors d'oeuvres, she noticed a gathering of redheaded attendees. Perhaps her friend was among them! Unless, of course, she had dyed her hair to further the masked persona, but it wouldn't hurt to try. Xiura hadn't, hoping she would be recognized by a friend or two.

On her way weaving around the many pairs of attendees conversing with one another in hopes for a dance, she came upon a lone blonde woman () in a striking champagne gold ensemble, accompanied by a Beautifly. From the roses in her hair to her floral perfume, she was dressed impeccably, and Xiura could not help but comment.

"I love your gown and mask!" she exclaimed, the mask affording the anonymity she realized she needed in order to compliment a perfect stranger. "The ballroom decor is beautiful, isn't it?" she said with the same tone of admiration, taking a sip from her glass, the Starlight Champagne, which tasted quite delicious with its fruity notes.

Alex was right in saying that Memo’s #2 love was clothes. Maybe his #3, too; because, listen. You grow up poor and closeted and then you finally get to come out of the closet and then maybe it just looks scary and empty so you fill it up, right?

Right.

“Yes, I have considered, Scrooge,” Memo shot back, doing his best to smile and look photogenic for every camera, “and I love it.” And yes, he had insisted that they match, because it was both beautiful and tacky and honestly Guillermo was loving every friggin’ minute of it.

They pressed through the doors and into the main swathe of people, where the current broke off and they began to disperse and scatter. Memo was fairly certain he was the only one who heard what Alex said but he fished an arm out of his humongous cloak and swatted him in the arm.

“God, it’s like you’re me, and I’m you,” he scolded, grinning. “What I’m wearing underneath took even longer to get into, so hands off, pal.”

A flourish announced the opening of the dance floor.

“Ooh, ooh, ooh-- do you wanna dance?” he was like a kid in a candy store, grabbing Alex’s hand and tugging him along behind.

Memo breezed through a decorated arch and paused, spinning back into his boyfriend-- Shivani had to work quickly to sweep his voluminous cloak behind him.

“Kiss under the mistletoe?” he asked, hopeful, pointing up at the plant hoisted over their heads.

The opulence and glamour of a ballroom held a nostalgia for Elisabeth as she glided through the twin doors with ease, as if stepping into a memory she'd long brushed aside as something to gather dust and decay. [break][break]

Her glance flitted across the dance floor for her first partner of the evening -- -- seeking him out among the crowd. The masked, dark-haired man lingered around still, and Elisabeth kept a distant gaze on the two men with a poisoner's patience.[break][break]

"Merci," came her easy reply, a small smile attending to her new companion. "Your gown is breathtaking as well. I wouldn't be surprised if in moments, you were swept away from my side to dance this evening."[break][break]

Summer sipped from her glass, reading over quite the fascinating plaque in front of her when she heard footsteps. They were faint, almost covered by the noise surrounding them. Of people mingling, exchanging pleasantries, and dancing.

Did she hear someone say kiss under the mistletoe? Well that was exciting.

However, she didn't turn or acknowledge until he was at her side. Even then, she gave him the slightest of glances from the corner of her eye, perhaps hidden by her mask as she appeared interested in the display in front of her. When he spoke...

A smile crossed her lips, unable to help herself from giggling as he asked for a dance with her. Summer turned, finally acknowledging Gunner with her glass extended for the nearest server to take away.

"A dance with me? But of course, my dear sir," Summer cooed, extending a hand for him to take expectantly. She held herself with dignity and poise as she waited for him to wisk her away.

alone, he entered, dressed to the nines in his only good suit, and bearing a variation of the same disguise as everyone else. rarely had he felt so mysterious, which was maybe ironic, considering how often he found himself hiding in plain sight.

while he would have preferred to be back on his couch at home at this hour, there was no way that he could be. not when something this big was happening in hoenn. not when the league was here, which meant somewhere, was probably here too. that was worriesome. what was more, was that was here, with . lance would protect her—but that just wasn’t enough. not now.

as the ballroom opened, he left towards the refreshments. he had come prepared with the explanation that his date had already left, and he wasn't asking anyone to dance.

he opted for a monarch black bergamot tea. caffeine.

she's nervous, to say the least. this will be the first real thing she does with lance in public. this will be the first time they won't be passersby to strangers. her hair is freshly washed and smells faintly of roses. she has the lightest smidge of makeup on - an accidental smoky eye that makes her blue-green eyes look wide and startled. but the botch job is, thankfully, hidden behind her mask. 

more than fretting about being on lance's arm in public (this is still new to her, okay?), she'd worked tirelessly over the past week drying and preserving and gluing and painting and everything else under the sun to make this ridiculous mask happen.

handwoven rose and yellow acacia flowers fringe the brows; globe amaranth nestled within a hill of amaryllis and windflower anemone; anthemis looking like daisies, springing from the tiny garden home pinned delicately to plaster. 

and on her other cheek, a careful cutting of arborvitae, the same she'd dare wear tucked behind her ears upon one of bo's visits. the flowers hold fast even when she gives it a shake. 

after telling lance she'd be working late at the farm, that she wouldn't want to hold him up, they'd agreed it best to simply meet at the masquerade. and she's teasingly told him he'd never be able to pick her out of her disguise. 

so when she comes out of the bathroom with the mask fitted neatly over her face, she sighs and looks for familiar faces. 

is talking with someone she doesn't recognize and is laughing with a few others. she'd know the two of them anywhere. and then a third shape, holding a cup of bergamot tea, tall and broad, makes her smile. her gaze lingers and then continues on, searching for her date.
