Kindra floated above the sand. It's body was lithe and thin. Too thin. To Ruma's eyes it was brittle. Crushable with one good smash.
"What a beauty!" Zac said, grinning at the gorgeous seahourse. It was a great specimen, but unfortunately water Pokemon battling on land faced a number of disadvantages. The heat effected them much more than land pokemon. The blazing sunlight, undiffused by water, was hard on their eyes. And of course the lack of contact with the biome meant they couldn't use their surroundings as well as a Pokemon used to being on land.

Ruma grabbed great handfuls of sand in his fists as Aqua darted about, building up speetld. Kingdra attacked with a Bubblebeam, and Ruma threw himself at the thin dragon. He hit the Bubblebeam fists first, absorbing the brunt of the attack with the great handfuls of wet sand. Ruma's eyes never left the brittle seahorse. He hurled himself bodily at his opponent, thick fists swinging with enough power to crush the Kingdra's plating.

"Avatars aren't necessarily strong trainers," Zac said, watching the chase apprehensively. "Strong people is more accurate. Most of us have been through a lot, or have been strengthened by our Avatar bond."

"What about...THIS!?" Zac asked, pulling a funny face at his Omastar. The Pokemon's own rubbery face shifted. Its beak and cartilage bent so that it looked at least 70% like the face Zac has just pulled.
"BAHAHAHA!" Laughed the Gym Leader, doubling over and clutching his stomach. "Oh that's too bloody good hahahaha okay, okay. How about- Oh hey Oscar!" Zac called, waving as his biome buddy approached. "Just getting in some last minute, uh, practice. Ready to go?"

They stood at the edge of the water, just a few metres away from the tidal line. The sand was dry from the sun, but firm underfoot. Omastar slapped the sand absentmindedly, leaving little tentacle trails. He looked up at Oscar with big, wet eyes that weren't quite round and opened his 4-toothed beak. Set into a face so similar to Zac Ramsay's, the effect was quite unnerving.
"Bootes is all set, oscar clayton . Fire when ready!"

"Pleasure to meet ya too!" Zac said, grabbing Rowan's hand and pumping it up and down in a warm, arm-shuddering greeting. "I'm not here for the challenge, really, just getting in some exercise!" Zac stretched his arms and neck, the muscles creaking like swaying trees. "I've been lazing around for too long. But THIS is gonna be the season of action!"

Zac grabbed an almost unused Pokeball. He'd won it from chryssa glasgow in a bet, and now it was time to take the beefy boy for a whirl.
"Byron! Get in there mate, it's time to show us what you've got!"
The Nidoking burst into the bright sunlight, blinking and making low noises of caution. "Ready for a battle?" Zac asked, pointing at Ora, Byron's opponent. The Nidoking looked his new trainer up and down, before turning to look at Poliwrath. Byron's eye-plates lowered, and he bristed, snorting in challenge. He pulled himself up, flexing his plated body and never breaking eye contact. "Kiiiiiing," he rumbled, with a voice like an idling bulldozer.
Suddenly, he banged his chest plates with both armored fists, shocking Zac with the harsh clang. Byron was ready, he was confident, and he was offering Ora the first shot.

"I've never tried a rotation battle!" Zac said, flush with excitement and Summer sun. "Guess you'll be the mentor today."
He followed Razz's lead, sending out three Pokemon. To one side was Vern, the Summer Sawsbuck, replete with his newly malted coat and a sandy ruff. In the center was O'Malley the Lurantis. He was as green as an underripe lime, and twice as zesty. The great mantis slid one claw along the other, slivering the air with the shriek of peeling carapace. "Hey! Stop that!" Zac said, wincing at the sound.
And on the other side was Bulu. Zac hadn't sent him out like the others. Instead he had been here before Zac and Razz arrived, lounging in a grove of freshly grown palms. "Ready Bulu? Time for a bit of exercise!" Zac said, clapping his hands together and rubbing them in anticipation.
Bulu closed its eyes.
"Well Razz, I'm ready when you are. Hit me!"

"Great to see ya here Amor!" Zac said, taking a deep, exhilarating breath of sea air. He grinned at his latest opponent, and reached for his strongest Pokemon. "And don't worry, you'll get the best."

Zac threw his first Pokemon out onto the beach. The ball burst before it hit the sand, ripped open from within by the uncontained, brutal force of Ruma, the Darmanitan. "DARUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" Roared the beast, spraying the sand with drips of burning spittle. It pounded the sand with fists like flipped pyramids. Top heavy, solid as stone, and hard edged. Zac took a step back, letting his monstrous beast thrash around the arena.
It had been months since Zac had let Ruma out, and for good reason. The Darmanitan was wild. Unfettered.
"Fair warning mate, you asked for the strongest, not the best trained. Ruma here is probably gonna go right for the throat. I'll try to return him before things get out of hand, but whatever you're sending out better be able to take a hit or two just in case."

"Howzit goin Eva!" Zac called down to Eva from the top of the sand dune. Beach grass curled underneath his bare feet, forming a cool, comfortable standing spot. "It's a hell of a thing. You can almost smell the competition! Or maybe that's just the smoke and sunscreen." From their vantage spot they could see the rest of the trainers going at it. Flashed of fire and glistening sheets of temporary ice burst along the length of Slateport Beach. Up here they had some space to themselves, and room for a proper Sky Battle.

"Nobody's redder than me!" Zac laughed, and he hurled his Pokeball into the sky. Nana emerged, stiff-feathered and hunched. She was an ancient Corviknight, and reminded Zac strongly of his grandma back in Alola. She flapped heavily, stretching her wings and stirring up whirls of sand. "Time to take this fight to the skies!"
