BONUS ROUND!

ROPE BURN CHAFES HANDS RAW as both teams refuse to give an inch. The hot summer heat drenches participants in puddles of their own sweat, salty enough to be mistaken for ocean brine.

TEAM KYOGRE looks to cinch victory by a hair’s breadth, coming back after almost an hour of chasing TEAM GROUDON’s early lead. Greyson Connors’s call for one last pull gives the signal for both sides to dig their heels into the sand. Seconds tick by with the clock hand getting ever closer to a full revolution.

“GAME!”

The announcer slaps down a buzzer to signal the game’s end. Everyone’s sudden release causes the rope to snap, inertia rebounding as several individuals fall onto their asses. A unanimous groan ripples past a wave of relief. The collective sign of the many bring new life as the more competitive trainers look to the judge for a verdict.

“Sorry–I, uh, blinked.”

Everyone goes wild at the possibility of inconclusion. Even the spectators rile up in a frenzy, engrossed in the artificial divide between teams. The historical feud of these great titans comes to life as those in attendance reenact the very battle itself.

Soleil had fell back on her butt with a yelp—nearly crushing her poor, terrified screeching Comfey in the process—taking a deep breath, her arms and legs aching like jelly, patting the Comfey in question as a means to apologise. It was at that point that the ref had admitted that he hadn't been paying attention, the pastel-hair girl swivelling her neck around in shock—~~at a near literal break-neck speed~~—ready to voice her complaints when whiplash had gotten the better of her![break][break]

A particular Soleil Delarosa had earnt herself a mouthful of sand, having lifted the arm she was resting on in distress to mitigate the painful burn of whiplash. Her frustration getting the better of her, Soleil struggling to flail around like the ersatz head of a Mimikyu in the wind, struggling to choose between comforting her neck or swing her hands like a child, to complain or to spit out the sand in her mouth. The young teen puffed her cheeks—even if it felt weird and gritty with the sand in her mouth, before deciding to raise her voice a little,[break][break]

The second the rope snapped, Sam was one of the contestants who landed on his ass. He sighed and stood up, careful not to dig his hands into the sand. They were a bit raw from tugging the rope and he didn't want to battle an infection the rest of the day.

Within a few hours they'd be fine, though.

But then the referee apparently ... blinked. There was little in life that didn't irritate Sam, but none that really got on his nerves enough to send him into a rage. But this?

He could feel it welling in his stomach first. It was further encouraged by his surroundings, almost as if origin pulses and precipice blades of emotions were summoned from the primal legendaries themselves. Sam found his usually stoic self furrowing his brows and expression not only rage, but disappointment.

"WAS NOBODY RECORDING??? THERE'S NO WAY THE GLORIFIED WAILORD BEAT US! WE LITERALLY HAD THEM ON THE ROPES SEVENTY PERCENT OF THE GAME!"

For such a basic bitch game, this was way too competitive. Next to the titanic fights of gigantamax pokemon back home, this contest appeared somewhat mundane to the Galarian boy.
