The poor GALLADE holding mistletoe above them. It was in for a show.

Barnaby was only tentative for a moment; having Felix Gallagher so close - and so receptive - was absolutely intoxicating. The fact that they were both guests in a high-ranking public official's home was apparently completely pushed from their minds.

Felix leaned in first and Barnaby reacted in kind, his body putty in the larger man's hands. The fervent touch of their lips sent shocks throughout his body; each connection like lighting in his bones.

"We really shouldn't be doing this here..." he whispered between kisses.

Was Barnaby suddenly regretting being so forward? Mmm, unclear. His words and his actions didn't seem to be synching up. Even as the statement left his lips, Barnaby's hand had started to wander from Felix's chest downward until it found purchase on his inner thigh.

Someone needed to stop them before, say, a random man with a cane started recording. That would not be good for the journalist's public image.

It was after the third or fourth time passing under the same gaudy-looking portrait that Locke finally got tired of chasing after the Yamper. “Alright you.” They chided as they scooped up the corgi in exasperation. “I’m pretty sure we’re not even supposed be down her-Oh!”

Maybe they shouldn’t have doubted the pup after all, as who should appear but exactly the pair they’d been looking for.

Locke jogged up to meet them with Eris Halla’s Yamper still in his arms. “There you both are! Everyone’s been-Okay, and we’re going.” He let himself be tugged back down to the main room by Remiel Calcifet, who was wearing antlers and a clown nose for some reason, where things seemed to have gotten even more heated than when he’d left.

He quickly pulled his hand out of Eris’ to cover the young girl’s eyes as they passed two young men getting ready to do more than kiss under a Gallade’s mistletoe, and tried to steer their little troop away from whatever was happening at the punch bowl now.

“Mi-Mister Calcifet…” Locke pleaded, face flushed and hiding behind Eyja’s yellow fur.

Her cheeks burn red and she's more than happy to be blinded, carefully holding onto Locke's hand as she totters after him. Like her, Reiner immediately turns his gaze to look at the skies but Eyja barks excitedly, kicking her smol legs at the loving atmosphere.

With the kids in tow, Remiel stops at the central landing of the bifurcated grand staircase, preceding the main parlor. Their vantage point there grants them clear view of all the shenanigans happening below. From Felix Gallagher 's kiss with BARNABY FINCH , to Martín del Mar putting the moves on another poor soul (Matilda Greenlaw ).

Eris Halla 's voice is the only thing that serves to tear Remiel's amused (and slightly flushed) expression away from it all. He blinks as she shoves a gift in his hand, holding it up before inspecting it with a wide and merry smile. "You made this yourself, Eris?" He asks, reaching down to gently pat her head in thanks. "I absolutely adore it. Earl Grey will, too."

Though he proudly clips the ball to his belt, lifting his cardigan slightly for a moment to show it off for a moment, Locke Jamison 's sentiment doesn't go disregarded. Remiel chuckles as the boy covers Eris' eyes, moving to pet the Yamper before nodding. "I'll take care of this, kids, don't you worry." The royal assuredly states, briskly walking down the last flight of steps afterward.

Seeing Alexei Ivanov with his phone out, recording all the amorous play, Remiel wags a scolding finger in his direction. He reaches luka chêne and the small group she surrounds herself with afterward (Martín del Mar , Matilda Greenlaw , Dominic Grey ), gently grasping her hand with his own as he approaches from behind. If they need a moment to soak in the antlers, the ears, and the red reindeer nose, they're given it as the royal gauges the tipsy expressions on some of their faces.

"She's right, you know," He chuckles. "Everyone is free to stay the night in a room of their own, especially with that particularly nasty blizzard on the horizon." Fingers entwine softly with Luka's as he pauses to side-eye her, tickled pink and fascinated to see her in such a state. "Which I suppose means you all can get properly sloshed without worry."

there is little he can say in the abyss of a downward spiral. the past months have not been kind to her. sootopolis represents more than team rocket. it represents the fears and failures of their organization. and no one feels that pain more than the person dutied to protect it.

he knows this pain. he’s worn it many times before. for that, he empathizes with her. tricks himself into thinking he understands.

the hall is filled with the hustle and bustle of frenzied guests looking to deload their numerous gifts. some take a detour to grace them with their presents.

all come with pokeballs. some of the are pokemon, owned by Martín del Mar or luka chêne. but it is Locke Jamison who takes the extra steps into making a personal stop, leaving fernando with a cheeky quip and magikarp too old to eat.

“i wish you luck in your battles to come. however, you need not beholden yourself to the perception of others.”

the sliver of a smile peeks out from his baffled juggling of abandoned pokemon.

It occurs to Mars that perhaps Matilda Greenlaw may have been trying to call him on some sort of bluff; that perhaps she thought he would back down. It could also simply be that this is how bold she usually is or that alcohol is having quite the effect on her, but whatever the truth may be, the banker finds no reason to feel intimidated by her words and actions.

A hand is gently placed upon Matilda’s waist, stopping her from moving away just yet, and while Dominic Grey may have apparently lost the ability to whisper and seems set on embarrassing Matilda, Mars spares her by making his response quiet enough for only her to hear:

”Remy! Nice antlers! Finally gracing us with your presence? You’ve been missing out on all the fun, everyone has been really spreading the holiday cheer.” An apparently innocent statement, and yet, when are things ever innocent when it comes to Mars? An idea forms when saying those words, and soon enough he’s approaching luka chêne. ”Actually, Luka, why don’t we give dear Remy a taste of what he has missed?”

It wouldn’t take too long before the man of the hour, the host of the entire shebang himself, Mister Remiel Calcifet would grace them ~~the plebians~~ with his (belated) appearance!

The moment he saw the other appear, wearing… antlers—all that was missing was the nose, apparently—he cackled.

“Ah, there you are!” he said, waving a hand in his direction.

“Geez, never thought you’d actually show up!” he added with another cackle, dropping off the empty glass of punch and excusing himself from Cap momentarily as he hobbled over to the man of the hour himself.

And from the depths of his jacket, he pulled out a Pokéball.

“You know these gifts ain’t gonna deliver themselves to their recipients! This one’s for you,” he added as he handed the Pokéball with a Dreepy sticker on it to the other man.

Of course, he was well-aware of how the other loved draconids as much as he himself had a bit of a problem with his feathered children (explain the Bird Mafia™ then).

From one hoarder to another.

“Oh, and for the record, I was only texting Locke because I asked them to look for you. Guess they succeeded,” he added as he flipped his phone around and showed that indeed, the message trail with Locke showing the last message he sent clearly visible.

“I was waiting for them to get back to me, you know.”

• finally the man of the hour appears
• excusing himself, Alexei hobbles over to Remiel the Reindeer
• hands his friend the last gift he’s brought along
• clears his name and shows the message screen where he had indeed sent Locke a message asking the courier if they’d found him yet

Dom was still very sure that his whispering had gone off without a hitch, even when luka chêne muttered something about beds. He turned to her with a quizzical stare, squinting his eyes far more than was probably necessary. It was only a moment later that someone else (Remiel Calcifet, who Dom absolutely did not recognize as the owner of the estate and purveyor of this very fancy party) confirmed the existence of crash space. Dom pursed his lips, nodding thoughtfully. He patted Martín del Mar and Matilda Greenlaw on their shoulders and said, "Mmm, carry on, then." And with that he turned and toddled back to his chair, slumping into it with a contented sigh. He was unconscious in a moment.[break][break]

He would have indeed wished for a kiss from Mars. Instead, he snored quietly in his chair, blissfully unaware.

Matilda shoots a look at Dom when he 'whispers' to her, but as Mars pulls her into him she forgets Dom's existence entirely.[break][break]

When Martín del Mar releases her with a wink, she can't help but flash an amused smile up at him. He turns to the party and continues on his charismatic way, and Mattie's attention is pulled to Dom briefly when he claps a hand on her shoulder. Her grin of amusement only grows as she helps her wildly inebriated friend back to his seat. She stays quietly out of the way of the group's proceedings, pouring herself another glass of mulled wine as she contemplates the interactions of the group she's found herself in.[break][break]

The sight of a Dreepy sticker on a Pokeball pulls her out of her thoughts, and her face lights up as she excitedly bounces over to Remiel Calcifet. "A Dreepy?!" she asks rhetorically, releasing Dziban. The small dragon flicks over to Matilda's shoulder, hiding in her hair so just his snoot and eyes are visible as he looks around at the group. "In all my travels I haven't been able to find anyone else with one of the Dreepy line!" Matilda's joyous gaze is locked on Remiel, ecstatic at the prospect of finding a friend she could talk Dragons with.

Locke opened their mouth to remind Remiel Calcifet that they were twenty years old and certainly not a kid anymore, but the prince was already making a beeline for the group around the punch bowl, leaving the younger man at the bottom of the staircase with the minor. Though, from their perspective, it looked like he was more interested in joining in the debauchery than “taking care of it.”

With a long-suffering sigh, they guided Eris Halla and both their Pokémon to one of the lounges adjacent to the main party room, leaving the door ajar in case anyone called for them. ”Sometimes I wonder why I come to these sort of things…”

It felt like the party had only started a few hours ago, yet when Locke glanced at one of the room’s needlessly-large windows he found the sky darkening under the fast-approaching night and distant storm. “That looks nasty…” He said with a thoughtful hum as he watched the clouds roll closer to the seaside manor.

”I could probably beat the storm if ya got somewhere to be.” He offered Eris as he finally released her squirming Yamper to the rug. Kringle-Kringle gave the pup a curious look from behind Fran-Fran. He’d been planning to stay himself, if only for a warm bed for the night.

Luka immediately brightens when Remiel Calcifet finally appears, like a dimmer switch turned to full. But she doesn't rush to his side or cling to him, aware that as a prominent political figure, he must have a reputation to uphold. She doesn't want his face to end up on a tabloid somewhere.[break][break]

"Salut, Monsier Calcifet! We were just wondering where you'd run off to. I'm glad you didn't get lost in your own home!"[break][break]

Still, she doesn't protest when his fingers find hers. And she giggles when Martín del Mar kisses her cheek again, her skin pleasantly warm under the gesture. Her eyes flit from Remiel to Mars and back again, mischief lingering at the corner of her mouth. Restraint is important...[break][break]

But the urge to play along wins in the end. Luka gives Mars another sweet cheek smooch before she blesses Remiel with one as well— fleeting and soft, like a sudden summer rainfall. Almost immediately she pulls back, allowing him to receive a thoughtful gift from Alexei Ivanov and to converse with Matilda Greenlaw about his new ghost baby.

Quick delivered banter, with little room for rebuttal, was to be expected from Martín del Mar . But it must have been the alcohol that had made him so bold as to tease Remiel with a kiss on sweet Luka's cheek... before planting another onto the ambassador himself. Mild shock and confusion hit him like a bucket of ice water afterward, washing away any sense of envy or insult that may have been blooming otherwise.

luka chêne 's round of smooching serves to bring him back around again, however. Suddenly feeling competitive, Remiel narrows his eyes on Mars before turning to carefully frame Luka's face with his hands. Raising the sleeve of his cardigan with his wrist, he gently rubs her cheek in circles before leaning in. But the erasure of Martín's peck ends up being little more than a bluff after all.

Instead, Remiel's lips sweetly meet her own, savoring a space he knows has remained untouched by the other. The act may be short, but it's done with such boldness and ease that it'd be difficult not to see it for what it was: a declaration. Exactly what that declaration entails, however, is left for the others to wonder as the royal turns to greet an old friend.

Though not before casting Mars a proud wink.

"Ahh, Alexei! My apologies for not showing up earlier. I was caught up with things." Gift wrap, ribbons, and sticky tape, mainly. Although he isn't given much time to elaborate before his friend produces a gift for him: a pokéball with a Dreepy sticker on it. Alexei Ivanov knew his taste in Pokémon quite well, no surprise there.

"Oh, you shouldn't have, friend. But thank you..." He smiles, disregarding Alexei's attempt at 'clearing his name' with a few waves and a chuckle. Oh, it wasn't that serious!

Just then, a young woman (Matilda Greenlaw ) regards the ball in his hand with awe, releasing a Dreepy of her own. Curious, Remiel summons his recently appointed gift, too, finding it to be a DRAKLOAK instead. It croaks after looking up at its new master, absorbing the sight of him, reindeer horns and all.

"In all my travels I haven't been able to find anyone else with one of the Dreepy line!"

"Is that so?" He remarks, supervising as his Drakloak takes a curiosity in the lone Dreepy. "Even with the Galarian embargo lifted, I suppose most people in Hoenn find it to be rather odd. I have an entire colony living in my draciary. Perhaps you'd like to see it sometime, miss... ?"

Locke nodded. ”I know whatcha mean. I haven’t spent the holidays with anyone since I left home,” he said wistfully. ”Speaking of which actually…” He rolled a white sleeve up, revealing the four cheap-looking watches underneath. He checked the one set for Kalos, then pulled out his phone to send his mom a quick ”Merry Christmas!” and a Santa emoji.

It was only after she’d replied with a few heart emojis and a ”Miss you. Stay warm.” that he finally noticed Alexei Ivanov’s earlier text. As he drafted up an apology to the older man, a small hand took his own and, suddenly, Eris Halla was pulling him down into a warm hug.

There was a lot he wanted to ask her about. Team Rocket. Cillian Quinn. The half-forgotten morning at Martín del Mar’s office. That hellish day in the crypts of a ruined church. If she was really as okay as she pretended to be.

But it was Christmas, and as he returned her embrace tenfold, he was just glad she was safe and having a good time.

“You don’t know that! Mr. Claus may’ve shown me a trick or two,” they jokingly insisted as they pulled away, then suddenly remembered why they’d sought her out in the first place. ”Oh! Before I forget again, I actually have something for you!”

Fran-Fran greeted the Yamper warmly while her trainer dug around in their bag. Kringle-Kringle peeked out from behind the Indeedee, then disappeared and reappeared on the other side. The chick repeated this a few times, trying to get the pup to chase him and play.

”Man, I haven’t been to one of those in forever.” Probably not since they were her age. Locke cast a glance back towards the door. ”I’m sure they’ll have to settle down eventually…Maybe then we can raid the kitchen for something bigger than a whores-horse doo-uh, the little finger foods…” They made a little pinching motion for clarification.

They finally found what they looking for, pulling out one last Pokéball for the night. It looked a little more used than the others they’d handed out that day, with chipped paint around the button and a pink heart sticker peeling away slightly on top. ”Here,” they said as they pressed the capsule into Eris’ hands. “You’ve already met him, but I actually got him at first with you in mind! Specifically how you were talking about making a secret base before. Didja know there’s only one Pokémon that can learn Secret Power naturally?”

Well, there were other reasons they wanted her to have him now too, but that was the first.

Watching the small tiff over luka chêne, a few things click into place for Matilda. She glances over at Martín del Mar to gauge his reaction to Remiel Calcifet 'marking his territory', so to speak. [break][break]

Expecting a small shoulder-dwelling creature, Mattie's a bit taken aback as a dragon nearly the size of her emerges from the Pokeball. She recovers quickly though and is soon looking at the Drakloak in awe; Dziban even emerges from her hair and floats around the Drakloak, inspecting it. The word "draciary" pulls her from her trance and she smiles up at Remiel. "Matilda!" She answers excitedly, offering her hand to Remiel for a shake. "Oh I would just adore that!"
