The sight of the waves is beautiful, but the sight of the gyrados swarm before them is more so. The great beasts of the water, weaving in and out, understanding the waves in a way Lethe could never. Sights like these reassure them, remind Lethe that the world is big, and everyone is small.

Gyrados had always stood out to Lethe. It reminded her of the tales of the kraken, which had captured their imagination from a young age as a youth stuck in beachless Ballonlea.

They move to the water, ready to attempt their capture.

There’s nothing natural about the current state of the Hoenn region, and even the seas loudly voice their disagreement. Or, well… their inhabitants sure do. Within the waters of Slateport bay, a swarm of Gyarados does as their species often does best: they rage. Waves are high, and HYPER BEAMS break to the surface on occasion, giving the scare of their lives to a few unlucky Wingull.

It’s as if the Kraken had woken in the ocean’s depths.

So Mars thinks while watching it all happen from the marina’s docks, standing by the yacht that he clearly cannot board until something is done about the Gyarados. He had wanted to go on a nice diving trip, but apparently, first he’ll have to help deal with this. He reaches for a Luxury Ball, and with no lack of flair, it’s his Milotic that appears in the waters before him.

she's perched on a flying golurk's shoulder, staring down at the cluster of sea dragons. each one looks angrier than the last. or, wait... don't they always look like that?

either way, one fires a hyper beam a little too close to her and her golurk for comfort. her expression dissolves into annoyance.

any closer and it would've been nasty.

she tosses a pokeball into the madness down below. if that doesn't work... there's always hammer arm to knock them out, right?

It was almost a surreal experience. Even as she stood on the shore, she could see multiple of them in the water, heads up and towering, as if lances piercing the heavens. Waves undulated and crashed as multiple behemoths roamed the water. Whether it was a frenzy or a brutish nature, what lay before her was a disaster waiting to happen.

And as she watched, it became easier and easier to find it--the center, the heart of the swarm.

That one.

She tossed a Pokeball up to release the four-legged mass of steel within.

Zev watched the roiling ocean from his vantage point on Slateport's beach, the angered Gyarados frothing the waves with their serpentine bodies. From that distance, they looked like countless kraken had come in from the depths, their many tentacles waving in ominous portent.

Normally, he would not care about this inconvenience to Slateport, but the Splashfest was scheduled for the following day, and he'd spent a considerable amount of money in his bar's sponsorship of it. It had to take place and it had to be a success. There was no way Howling was going to recover the cost of sponsorship if not enough people showed up to buy drinks from their stall.

Zev released his Gengar, Smoke, from a Pokéball. "Go put them all to sleep," the man ordered, not sure if that would actually help and not giving a single shit.

Xiura tossed a Pokéball at the oncoming wave, her Poliwrath appearing amidst the shallows. "Let's save the Splashfest!"

Poliwrath rumbled dutifully, aiming a mighty HYDROPUMP attack at a raging Gyarados nearby. But just as the water lanced across the open air, a Magikarp leapt up, incidentally taking all the damage meant for the other Pokémon.

Xiura clapped a hand to her mouth in shock. "Oh, dear. That was unlucky." Poliwrath rubbed his head sheepishly.

Then came a flash of blazing white light, and an apparently newly-evolved Gyarados launched upward from the water in the same place the Magikarp fell. Its maw gaped open, aiming a HYPER BEAM at Bufo.



"Oh, no! Very unlucky!" Xiura shouted. "Bufo, watch out!"

a few of her coworkers had mentioned the swarm of gyarados a few times before the end of her shift. between worries about how unnatural it was, and the damage the dragons would cause, there had been a few jokes about whatever was in store for hoenn next.[break][break]

maybe it was the subject matter, but most of the jokes had been kraken-related. despite the humor, the thought of a city-sized tentacool rising out from the depths of the ocean didn't seem entirely implausible at this point.[break][break]

regardless of all that, flora practically vibrates with excitement as she gets closer to the beach, readying a pokeball in hopes she catches one of the majestic water types. even if she doesn't, then...oh well! at least she can say she got to see something like this in her lifetime.

Everything was still just so fucking raw for him.

So it was kind of surprising, really, to see him, Arashi, #1 hater of sand because it got stuck in his joints—out at Slateport Beach, atop the head of his Steelix, Alex Louis.

There was carnage out in the water. Unbelievable.

Why were the Gyaradii acting like mf’ing krakens on crack?

“Geez…” he said with a one-armed sigh—oh, that’s right—he hadn’t gotten his right arm replaced yet, so there was this tingly, funny, weird sort of ‘phantom limb’ experience going on with him right now.

“Bring us closer.”

The Steelix inched forward further, not wanting to go closer to the edge of the water.

“Fucked up shit…”

He then took a clumsy aim with his left hand (seeing as he didn’t have a right one, at least for now) and then threw an empty Pokéball into the gnawing, thrashing mess.

Just trying to enjoy the Splashfest with his family, Josh found himself pulled into Ranger work once more as Hoenn's ever-chaotic climate brought about... Angry Gyarados. And of course it was up to Josh to try and help calm them down. Many Trainers also wanted to catch the things, which likely wasn't going to sit well with the creatures. The kraken apocalypse of Gyarados could very well be released if these folks weren't careful with their catching.

So it was that Josh would bring out his Swampert and hit the water, hoping they could pacify the Gyarados and send them on their way as much as possible.

another day, another looming doomsday. aaron stands on slateport beach, dogs out, and watches a group of gyarados rage just beyond the shore. their fury is indiscriminate, even though they should be banging their big, kraken tentacle-shaped bodies against the barrier instead of terrorizing the humble surfers of slateport.

When word got out of the Gyarados rampage, Thomas had to investigate. Unlike Lance, who just watched someone else handle the problem during the Lake of Rage Incident, Thomas took direct action. His Hydreigon would fly by, blasting the rampaging beasts, and drawing their aggro. Meanwhile, Thomas would attempt to capture one of them for himself.

Ruby didn't give a damn about the Slateport Splashfest. Okay, maybe she gave the smallest bit of a damn since her sister might want to go, but other than that, it just sounded like a huge waste of time. What she did care about was the Gyarados swarm that was stalling the festivities. Gyarados were strong and intimidating, just what Ruby looked for in a Pokémon, and she wanted one. So why not take advantage of the chaos and try to bag one?

[break][break]The way the waves crashed and white fins crested the surface reminded Ruby of... What was that mythical creature called? The Kraken, right! It was more tentacle-y than Gyarados, but the idea of a ferocious sea creature devouring ships whole still fit. Man, mythology could be badass sometimes.

this isn’t good for the ocean life here. anywhere.

nina had learned a lot about marine ecosystems over the past several months. the abundance of information had made this especially distressing. her fears were echoed by marine biologists around the world, every morning in podcasts. those fears were confirmed, now, in the most violent way they could witness—the thrashing of many gyarados like a horde of angry KRAKEN at the barrier’s edge, desperate to leave into farther waters.

there was word of other trainers going to catch them. some just wanted a gyarados, others saw it as a way to prevent them from hurting one another in their panic. she was here to do just that.

“let’s go.”

the shiny milotic beneath her took off across the waves. once scared of the ride, and often falling off, she now held on tightly, squeezing her legs. she was stable. they could go faster. she wasn’t scared as they came close to the swarm, or the violent waves they were creating. pokeballs were thrown. walrein and dewgong.

ICE BEAM and AURORA BEAM ripped through the splashing water towards the closest one.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Last time a swarm rolled in, Isaac had been chased down by a pissed off whale up and down Hoenn's coasts. Without a proper surfing Pokemon, he basically had to jetski away on Dhelmise's back for dear life. To say it was an ideal experience would've been a massive fucking lie.[break][break]

But, this? This he could get behind.[break][break]

Flapjack, his trusty Mantine steed, whooped and cheered as they glided circles around the writhing sea-beast. While not the fastest Pokemon, they practically hovered through the air when breaching the waves and had an uncanny knack for defelcting the Gyrados' Hyper Beams with their powerful flippers. Isaac had never felt safer on the water's surface.[break][break]

Bit by bit, the plan worked. Gyarados were such ferocious creatures that they tended to tire fast, and this one was no exception. As its tremendous body started to droop, he saw his chance. He drew forth Adrenaline, tucking the Amoonguss under his arm like a knight drew his lance. What better way to slay a dragon?[break][break]

The first joust passed, a blast of Spores hitting the Gyarados right in the face. Its eyes rolled back. Its head grew heavy. Slowly, it started to waver. Another joust. Another direct hit. Even all of the Gyarados' fury and hatred could barely keep it awake now.[break][break]

Content, Isaac took his moment to strike. He slipped a Pokeball into his hand, pegging the slumbering beast right on the neck during the third and final pass.[break][break]
