AS THE S.P.E.C.T.R.A. INITIATES VANISH TO THEIR SIMULATIONS, cameras record their departure from the HOLO DECK into separate warehouses designed for their unique team-based missions.[break][break]

These images project on monitors elsewhere, in an observation deck unseen by the participants of the Trinity Trials at hand. Furnished with a massive lounge and several amenities, those who had been here during the S.P.E.C.T.R.A. exams of the previous year would recognize the bar, betting stations, lounge chairs and sofas, and large tables bearing a holographic map of the deck's current readings.[break][break]

The evaluators of the S.P.E.C.T.R.A. Trinity Trials are some of Rocket's finest and deadliest. Underbosses, admin, scientists, and fearsome Beasts intermingle here as they coolly watch the proceedings with silent judgment.[break][break]

He'd tuned out the inane shouting and sat on a couch with his own glass of whisky in hand. With his other hand, he scrolled through his texts, catching up on the latest science facts Neffatari Nzingha had sent him while he'd been busy.[break][break]

Only when the monitors changed, switching from cameras overlooking the initiates to the final drafts of teams and their simulated foes, did Zev look up. He contemplated the two teams he'd been assigned, Team Blank and Team Gilgamesh.[break][break]

ana fell, Kaname Fujihara, and Kouji Matsubara were all familiar to Zev. Based on what he knew of their personalities and skills, they may synergize together. Between Cygne's experience, Kaname's intellect, and Kouji's sheer perseverance, they might succeed.[break][break]

Ruby Garcia, Makoto Kurumi, and Gerald Kaiser might also stand a winning chance, provided that Makoto didn't hinder their teammates. Of the three, Makoto was the least experienced. The least hardened.[break][break]

Zev heard Cillian's declaration, of course, but chose to remain silent. His preference was to watch and see, not play games with tools they may need for future use.

Instead of finding his own seat, Temp had found Cillian Quinn's instead. Perched on the arm and draped on the side, he peeked over Cill's shoulder to peer at the monitors.[break][break]

Temp was surprised he had been asked to participate. Yet, in the scheme of things, he had played an important role in Rocket during his time as a spy. That whole job, too, had been about evaluating Trainer's worth and seeing if they could face the adversity and challenges he handed them. This wasn't that much different; he just played less of a direct role.[break][break]

His eyes clicked to the two screens holding the teams he had been assigned.[break][break]

Hmm. Temp had never met any of these people. That was probably for the best, though. It would let him be more impartial when the time to judge them came.[break][break]

"Some of them seem pretty, uh... eccentric?" He phrases it as a question, his pronunciation of the last word a little off. Something recently learned.[break][break]

"Maybe that kind of weird energy will make them better god killers." It didn't sound hopeful, just a mulled over thought. While he didn't verbally answer, he glanced at the screen holding Makoto Kurumi.[break][break]

"Hey, Zev?" Seems that Zev Harcourt wouldn't be getting the peace he probably wanted. "Who do you think will surprise us the most?" An inverse of Cill's question, in a way. Temp gently nudged his husband on the shoulder, encouraging him to answer as well. Zev would be forced to socialize. As was his punishment for being around Temp.

Zev's blue eyes flickered over to where Cillian Quinn and Tempest Quinn sat upon hearing the latter's question. He considered the initiates engaged in battle versus the simulated Pokémon before replying.[break][break]

"River Marx is unassuming and quiet, but he gets the job done," the Beast replied, nodding toward the monitor that showed Team Fate's progress. "He might have something up his sleeve we don't expect."[break][break]

Elisabeth Fiorelli's comment about Ruby Garcia was one with which Zev agreed. He nodded at the underboss, though his expression remained apathetic, neutral.[break][break]

"Garcia has promise. I've taken her on an assassination before. She killed the target without flinching."[break][break]

Unlike other grunts, such as the one Cillian and Elisabeth were discussing. Zev's eyes narrowed as he observed Isaac Merlo on the screen.[break][break]

The boy had been so useful in the early months of their relationship. Though he still displayed loyalty to Zev, he'd failed to harden his heart and become the weapon Zev desired, even after all this time.[break][break]

Useless. It was time to look for a new tool. A better one.

The last time the SPECTRA Exams had started, he'd waited in anticipation for the tests to start. Life threatening? No problem. He'd needed a change, and Cillian Quinn had suggested it as a way to get stronger. Or had it been jayden cross ? His reasons for joining SPECTRA were hazy, with his focus fully on being there. Most of his research and intel gathering was for SPECTRA after all, though albeit a little slower with the additional duties of a Beast. Still, he's a little excited to see behind the curtain. Only a year ago right? Crazy how shit changes. [break][break]

The lounge is nice, as anything meant to cater to the upper brass is. He makes a bee line for the bar asking for frozen margarita to sip on, before graciously taking his glass and moving towards the group of higher ups milling around. [break][break]

There's been laughs, little snickers and giggles as the Beast watched the main events unfold before they broke into groups. He'd been busy writing, scratching out names and reading them- then scratching them out again. [break][break]

Yes, while they were here to evaluate SPECTRA recruits, Mint also wouldn't waste this opportunity to glean the different talents of all of them. Not everybody made the cut after all. [break][break]

The conversations drifts to the teams and Mint listens carefully. As Elisabeth Fiorelli mentioned the first team he chimed in, "If they can get along long enough to make it through, ma'am." he said before adding, "Maybe in a different team the synergy would be better but how often to field agents get a second chance against threats of this caliber? They need to prioritize their mission over their egos first." he said, thinking of his own squad. Despite the odd combination CERBERUS was he worked fairly well with jayden cross and Felix Gallagher . "Don't you guys agree?" he added with a grin at the other heads that made the squad. [break][break]

At the mention of Isaac Merlo and Cillian's doubt for him he added, "Sir, If you think he poses that big of a flight risk, why not ask Zev Harcourt or I to kill him now? Exposing him to SPECTRA and more only creates an intel risk, doesn't it?" the question makes him straighten up. His eyes go from Cillian to Elisabeth and back before moving to find Jayden again. The most staunchly loyal of them all. Jayden had threatened to kill him for less. [break][break]

"In any case," he said after a polite silence. "From my first impressions, I think Team Bouquet will make it. Collectively, they may be the most cooperative team. At the very least I think they're all survivors." he said as he looked over one of the monitors for the KYUREM SIM. "Poor Alba Evovae though." he added looking back at the Underboss. "Bet you he stays." But then again, of course Mint would put his money on an underdog. [break][break]

"Teams aside! I want- I believe if these ones wash out of SPECTRA, their talents may be useful in a different department." His attention moves to THEO BECKETT and then Elisabeth Fiorelli for this, now more so giving a report than participating in a conversation with others. [break][break]

"I can provide a copy after with updates reflecting pass/fails. But I think these would make excellent choices for a more espionage focused path. Should they chose it." He quickly lists off his thoughts, once she gives him the nod. [break][break]

As the members of Rocket's Upper Brass convened around their new SPECTRA, Jayden sat at the corner of the room. He was quiet in his observation of their new recruits, his interest switching from those grunts that he already knew and towards the ones that he didn't.

[break][break] River Marx, Asriel Pryde, lykaios athanasia. of the three, he knew about River Marx the least, though from his brief interactions with the man he found him to be the capable sort. lykaios athanasia was also quite adept as well, if his reports to jayden regarding the league's rangers were any consolation, but the fact that he had a sister who was a defector still remained to be a thorn in the back of his mind. and unfortunately for the both of them, both paled in comparison to jayden's clear preference for Asriel Pryde — the admin had grown up with the other, and with Raziel Beckett leaving a gaping hole in both their chests, jayden knew that asriel would not disappoint.

[break][break] his gaze shifted from the screen and towards his mentor Cillian Quinn who sat next to him, as well as his husband who sat draped comfortably over him. both Tempest Quinn and bryan delarosa were paired alongside him with evaluators for this group — he wondered how well they knew asriel.

[break][break] as Zev Harcourt vouches for River Marx, jayden finally speaks up:

[break][break] "for my group, my vote is on Asriel Pryde." it should have come as little surprise to those who knew him. "he was raised in kanto, and so stands a leg up from the others."

[break][break] as mint frost speaks for CERBERUS, jayden merely tilts his head. "synergy is important yes," he says, eyes shifting back over towards the screens. "but sometimes skills can compensate for both."

[break][break] after all, what was the point in team work if all the chains were weak?

[break][break] briefly, his gaze fell upon Ashley Shepard. he was paired up with Hitoshi Inoue and Selena Desmarais. though jayden was not assigned to them, he couldn't help but think of the last conversation that he shared. how the other had wanted to be admin. jayden knew his childhood friend had the mettle and the skill — but did he have the amibition? thus far, it seemed like Selena Desmarais held the reigns of their operation. unsurprising, considering the position she used to hold within the league.

[break][break] glancing towards fern delaney and Naomi Sato's group, his eyes fall upon one of their recruits. the boy with the wild, silver hair and a lineage that could run deep into promise.

This time last spring it was BARNABY FINCH who had been under the microscope for the first iteration of the SPECTRA Exams. Participant turned evaluator, now he was the one judging ROCKETs brave enough to test their mettle.[break][break]

Seated near Elisabeth Fiorelli with a glass of cognac, Barnaby responded first to her comment about one of the groups he was evaluating: Team Postmodern Shredettes. He spoke with mild interest, musing over what could be gleaned from behind the screens.[break][break]

"Is it boldness or hubris? Both could get them killed." And endanger ROCKET's cause, if this were an actual mission and not an assessment of their skills. "Of the three, it's Xenon Antheil that separates herself from the rest. She has an unchecked mouth that's bound to get her in trouble some day."[break][break]

He had thoughts about the other two, Shred and Sylvia Cousteau, but would reserve further judgement for now.[break][break]

"As for Team Godkiller," Barnaby's gaze passed from Elisa to Tempest Quinn. "Selena Desmarais has promise. I recruited her myself. We'll see if she lives up to my expectations." It was a gamble the admin hoped would pay off. [break][break]

As for the others, Ashley Shepard was already on his shit list for decking him with a snow ball last winter, though the executive hadn't known it was Admin Bee at the time. The last of the Godkiller crew, Hitoshi Inoue, was relatively unknown, although Barnaby faintly remembered someone mentioning him in passing. Yumi Hasegawa, perhaps?[break][break]

When mint frost offered his insight, Barnaby nodded in agreement — too many uncurbed egos could be ruinous. With jayden cross's comment he felt compelled to add, "But where do we draw the line between skill and synergy? I'd rather have a cohesive unit than one vigilante going rogue."

Mint's offer to kill Isaac Merlo drew Zev's attention, especially because the other Beast had mentioned Zev's name in the same breath.[break][break]

Killing Isaac had never crossed Zev's mind before. The boy had been a valuable tool in the hitman's arsenal; he had even found Caleb Harcourt for Zev. But once a tool outlived its usefulness, what else was there to do but discard it?[break][break]

Looking inward, Zev found no feelings of possessiveness for Isaac that he'd once harbored for Caleb. That he was starting to harbor for Nenet. All that remained was a twinge of disappointment that Isaac's persistent weakness had wasted Zev's time.[break][break]

If Cillian Quinn wanted Isaac dead and ordered Zev to kill him, the Beast found he had no qualms with pulling the trigger.[break][break]

"Mint is right," he said to Cillian in a cold, apathetic tone. "Isaac should be removed from S.P.E.C.T.R.A. if that's the case."[break][break]

Zev raised his gaze to the monitors again as jayden cross and BARNABY FINCH spoke of synergy and skill. The first group Zev had been assigned, Team Blank, had barely begun their assault of the simulated Unown. Meanwhile, though Team Gilgamesh was making progress, they seemed to be arguing, too.[break][break]

"When it comes to Legendary Pokémon and their Avatars, synergy is better," Zev said in agreement with Barnaby.[break][break]

"A single, skilled operative can hold their own against a non-Legendary or non-Avatar without an issue. But in this scenario, with this power gap?" He shook his head. "They need to work together flawlessly."

He had always considered himself to be a part of Rocket the same way that an organ is a part of a body — a vital component in a integrated network of pulsing veins, complex pathways and vital organs all working in unison to keep a body moving.

It is only natural they look to Cillian Quinn for this. It cuts a proud line in Temp's chest that his husband's opinion is so valued.[break][break]

"I'll do it. Isaac Merlo can prove his loyalty or be culled." It was cold to say about someone you considered your friend. Something unexpected for those who knew Temp for a long time, like jayden cross, mint frost, or many others in the room. But declan walsh had seen him changed. The Battle of Dewford had solidified the path he now walked down.[break][break]

Unlike with Mint or Zev Harcourt or anyone else who had offered, Temp takes the responsibility. To him, you didn't get anything done by pussyfooting around or laying the choices on others. It was natural to grab these things by the horns and make them himself. Plus, Isaac was his friend. It seemed like a mercy kill in his eyes.[break][break]

His eyes cut over to Elisabeth Fiorelli, no judgment there further than a raised brow in question. If she was silent, he would take that as confirmation to the task.
