GYM LEADER BATTLE - Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

EXPOSITION

As Hoenn enjoys its latest unnatural winter, a call is put out to gym leaders across the region. Michael Navidson, with the backing of Councilwoman freya morningstar, has called for a general meeting to discuss security concerns and growing tensions in the region. Tensions run high over the dynamax issue as well. Dewford’s gym leader feels it is best to discuss these issues in person, rather than in a group chat.[break][break]
Every gathering needs a name. Gym Leader Navidson proves, once again, that he should not be given the ability to name anything. He hopes that Gym Jam will become a regular occurrence in Hoenn, noting that gym leader assemblies are far less common than they once were. Only time will tell.[break][break]

THE SETTING

The stage for the summit is Lilycove City, during VCT.. The meeting takes place on one of the higher floors of a skyscraper within the city. From the windows, the gym leaders can see battles throughout Lilycove. Citizens of Hoenn and foreigners alike frolic in this festival of battle. In a nearby arena, a Pikachu grows to massive size, perhaps the one owned by aaron faust or ollie morales.[break][break]
Gym Leader Navidson has not yet arrived. Catering has been provided for the event. In an unfortunate turn of events, Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki was put in charge of handling food. A massive platter of tuna sandwiches line the table. The only refreshment available is coffee. Iced coffee. With no sugar.[break][break]

The food selection here was…underwhelming. One bite of that sandwich was all he needed to not try any more, and one sip of that coffee nearly had him spitting it out.

At least his Pokemon was enjoying it; the Ralts that sat on his shoulder consumed what Hideo wouldn't…well, "Ralts". It was Uxie sitting on his shoulder, an Illusion keeping it disguised as a Ralts. He was letting his Beheeyem rest for the time being, after all the battles he put it through, and a Ralts wasn't out of the ordinary to keep around.

A Ralts that didn't seem to mind tuna sandwiches or unsweetened iced coffee.

Did Uxie even like it? Or was it just trying a new experience? Hideo didn't know - he just knew he wasn't eager for either.

"Think we should just order something delivered here? There's an Alolan place nearby that does delivery. Could get one of my Pokemon to pick it up for us."

freya doesn't have strong opinions on food these days and if she cared about decorum, she would have chastised tsubaki for not welcoming hoenn's finest with a better platter. as it stands, she's delighted by the coffee table and helps herself to a glass so she can nurse away her caffeine headache.

she looks up when a couple of the invitees show themselves, but they engage with each other just as quickly, which leaves her to munch on her sandwich and pour over the tablet she has in front of her.

When was… when was the last time they met like this? In person, and not through text?

(Honestly, he wasn’t too sure. Most days he would look through the group chat and idly ponder if they were going to meet in person that wasn’t going to result in a food fight…)

So for the next few days prior to the actual meeting, he got busy baking.

(Yes, Guillermo Marceliño asked if he was out of his mind making so many macarons. The answer to that was simply: no. Was he stressed? The good thing was, he wasn’t! So there was that.)

Eventually Birddad™ #1 himself would arrive (as lam logan was Birddad™ #2) accompanied by his Lucario who was helping him carry several boxes of macarons.

For those in the know, this Alex baked a lot of goodies. And they were almost always macarons. They were the one thing he would never fail at. Said macarons just happened to be a wild assortment of flavors sorted by color, too.

(So that was the sugar problem fixed, to an extent.)

“Macaron, anyone?” he began as he set down the several boxes that he was carrying near the table where there were tuna sandwiches… and noticeably only tuna sandwiches spread out so far. Uh-oh!

Once the Lucario had set down the other boxes as well, he recalled the jackal Pokémon before sending a quick text to a certain friend of his which read:

‘help they only have tuna sammiches here at the gym leader meeting. I brought macarons, but we’re gonna need something savory too! can you grab pizza or anything? not sure if you can grab drinks too. will pay you for one, two boxes, get pepperoni and the all-meat if they have it!’

Before sending the message to little Josh Devlin. He noticed that there was just… coffee?

Only coffee?

Out came the phone again, this time to lam logan another message:

‘hey uh. gym leader meeting right now, but they only have coffee for drinks. i brought macarons, but idk if i have time to grab more things, can you get drinks? i’ll pay you when you get here.’

• Alex went and made macarons for everyone (as you do)
• offered them to the people in the room before belatedly realizing that there was just tuna sammiches for food and coffee for drinks
• sent a text to both little Josh and Lam if they can bring more food and drinks!
• macarons: why are the macarons all pastel, they taste great though

hot off yet another win in the vital city tournament, cian cleans himself up a bit, drying off sweat and sand clinging to his skin, before making his way over to the gym leader summit.[break][break]

he casually slips into the room with two bags full of fast food containers, not wanting to make a big deal about his arrival, and as he approaches the catering area, he's caught off guard by the spread.[break][break]

"oh. was this not meant to be a potluck? maybe i misread..." with his free hand, he reaches into his pocket for his phone before pulling up the invitation. "i did misread. damn, that's on me."[break][break]

shrugging, he unpacks the containers from mcpognalds, having bought enough big pogs and quarterpoggers to feed a relatively large family, but definitely not enough to feed all of them.[break][break]

claiming his mcpognalds and fries along with another set, he walks over to sit next to noah faber's machamp, placing noah's preferred order on the table. he bumps his elbow into the fighting-type's first arm.[break][break]

Hideo's attention is ripped from his phone the moment noah faber addressed him. "Don't think there is any," he said, "'least none that my Ralts here saw…would'a brought something myself if I knew this was gonna be the selection. It's not even fancy cold coffee."

He was always more a tea-drinker anyways.

Sweetened tea.

It's a miracle that Alexei Ivanov showed up offering macarons; the second he offered them up, there were already several being lifted with psychic energy, floating over to the boy and his Pokemon. "Yeah, we'll have some!" Hideo said, unaware his Pokemon was already working on that.

Not until one was placed right in his hand.

Finally, sugar.

And the smell of fresh Mcpognalds was impossible to miss, courtesy of CIAN MAHER . Finally, some good fricking food. "Misread or not, it's just what we needed," Hideo said, already smelling the Kalos Fries Uxie was psychically lifting over in his direction.

No need to order Alolan today.

Those were Navy's orders, and her responsibility to Freya. Not like Gym Leaders needed security, but these days, you couldn't be too careful. [break][break]

Delivery guys kept lining up with suspicious boxes. Looked like food, maybe Alolan, but you couldn't be sure. They wouldn't get close enough for her to inspect their contents anyway, with a vicious Arbok beside her. Sumire would bite anyone who drew near who Baki didn't give the go-ahead, just like she did the first guy who tried to snap a picture of a bag next to the door. [break][break]

Now he was nursing his arm, getting antivenom administered by an ambulance. And she had a free meal for her snake.[break][break]

Nobody was gonna enter save certified Gym Leaders and her boss. Period.[break][break]

Just as well that they were too afraid to approach after that first guy tried calling their bluff. Made this gig easier.[break][break]

In a way, Josh was happy that Michael Navidson 's and freya morningstar 's Gym Leader summit had been moved out of Mauville at the last minute. With all the Gym Leaders being present in Lilycove for the tournament anyway, he wouldn't have to prepare his office like he originally planned. He also wouldn't have several of the other Gym Leaders breathing down his neck for his large collection of Raikou merchandise. On the other hand, he wouldn't have to foot the bill for catering from the Checkered Flag. While the crowd was a lot smaller than it would be for the big Ranger meeting, it was still a pain hosting these things. Outdoor events, like his birthday party, were much easier for Mauville Racing Grounds to host. He couldn't help but bring his favorite item to the party; a ten-inch stuffie of the Johto Beast he admired and loved. The adorable god of speed was perched on his shoulder as he walked down the hallway to the meeting room high above the Vital City Tournament.

Unsurprisingly, many of his colleagues were there already.

He brought food and drinks: a pack of lemonade cans were strapped to the saddle of Inky the Glaceon, and two pizza boxes harnessed to that of Clyde the Flareon, both of whom followed him into the room. He had brought only his Eeveelution steeds with him. Raikiri had to rest after fighting twelve matches, and he couldn't bring anything overly large. "Sorry if I'm a little late," Josh apologized as he stepped into the meeting room. "Hi there, Noah! I can't believe I'm 11-1 after the first twelve rounds! How's your tournament been going?" he asked as the two walked up to the refreshment table, undoing the strap on the Glaceon to get his box of cans free. "There's two per person. That should be enough. If you need them on ice, Inky's got you covered."

He stepped away to the other side of the table and undid the straps holding the piping-hot pizza to the oversized Flareon. "One extra large pepperoni and one extra large meat-lovers should be plenty for nine people," Josh said to Alexei Ivanov , withdrawing Clyde once his duty was complete. There was only room for one giant Eeveelution inside, with with all the other Pokémon out and about. "When are my Pokémon and I gonna whip you into shape? You've wanted battle training for how many months now, and we've never made a date to do it!" he half-teased before walking off toward CIAN MAHER .

"Have you looked at the leaderboards for the tournament? After the first day, we're in first and second place!" Josh bragged to the weather warrior. "I'm 11-1, and you were my only loss! There's still a lot of action to go, and it's only gonna get tougher. There's so much food here, though... good thing I didn't make dinner plans for tonight!" Thankfully, he had some time to rest while other matches were still going on.

the world waits at their doorstep and he will be one to deliver. the future of the region depends on it.

with freya morningstar present, there is little reason for him to lead or even delegate. which leaves him to stand by the window, unfazed as a DYNAMAX pikachu scrawl across the lilycove skyline.

“it seems dynamax has proven quite popular,” he states aloud, “and just as potent.”

If only because of the sudden detour he makes on his way there, derailed by Alexei Ivanov’s sos to grab some extra munition. Luckily, he’s by an in n’ out type pizza joint, so he figures—why not grab a couple of those too? With his decidueye toting along a bag of soda bottles behind him, he’s back on track.[break][break]
Unnnntil he’s halted in place right outside the door to the meeting room. The assistant that bars the room is not quite as imposing as the arbok that bares its fangs at him the second he reaches for the door.[break][break]
"Sir, you can deliver that after the meeting."[break][break]
Well that stops him in his tracks.[break][break]
“Uhh, huh?” Lam frowns, awkwardly shuffling the pizza boxes in his hands as he looks at her, but she’s already looking down at her phone. Casting him away without second thought, “I’m not a delivery guy! Is it the hat?” His face scrunches up as his eyes tilt to look at it though he obviously can’t see it with it on his head. His voice flattens out, ”Yeah, it’s the hat, isn’t it?”[break][break]
By total coincidence, he’s wearing his pizza hat—quite literally. The plain black baseball cap is not flashy, simply stating P I Z Z A across the front in block letters. It had been funny, when he bought it, and he’d needed a hat today![break][break]
He’d sort of forgotten that was the one he’d grabbed.[break][break]
Shaking his head, he tries to shuffle the boxes in his hands so that he can reach up and tug the hat off— green hair a bird’s nest underneath. “I’m a gym leader,” he says to Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki, shoulders rising and falling in a shrug.[break][break]
Though between her basically dismissing him, and the arbok’s intimidating presence, he’s not sure if she’s about to believe him. He leans up on his toes, trying sneak a peek past her into the room, to mouth a hellllppp at anyone who might notice him.

Josh Devlin 's pizza delivery soon found a slice being lifted out psychically, heading straight for the "Ralts"'s mouth - and a can of lemonade was deposited neatly in Hideo's hand. "Your gut's gonna get bigger if you keep this up," Hideo joked, taking a sip of his newly-given drink.

How could Uxie down so much food and drink in one go?

It just could. Hideo had learned that questioning Uxie's stomach capacity was a question of how much money he had to spend. It'd eaten several times its own weight before, and it still weighed a third a kilogram.

FERNANDO SILPH 's comment drew Hideo's attention, his "Ralts" informing him of the gigantic Pikachu off in the distance. "Already got to face off against one myself," he said, "courtesy of the Head Ranger. Kinda intimidating to deal with if you don't got one of your own, though my Beheeyem managed." ollie morales 's Pikachu had proven an impressive challenge.

Maybe that was Ollie's off in the distance right now?

Uxie pulled his attention over to the door - evidently someone was there, asking for help? It took him a second for Uxie to tell him who it was: lam logan .

Who had more pizza, according to Uxie.

Uxie wanted him in here.

Hideo made his way over to the entrance. "He's good," Hideo said, "Lam here's the Lilycove gym leader...you know, this city?"

Hopefully, that'd be enough for Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki to let him in.

"Mind letting him in before the pizzas get cold?"

While little Josh had already shown up, he found it unusual… wait a second, where was lam logan?

Lilycove’s Birddad™ was late to the meeting, and it was right in his own city—wait a second…

“Okay, so… thanks for bringing the pizza, Josh,” he began as he grabbed a pepperoni slice for himself and hastily folded it down the middle before taking a rather big bite out of it—and he didn’t miss the remark about the kaiju-sized Pikachu either.

“Yeah, it’s fun now, but think of the collateral damage they can cause when they go out of control,” he remarked in the Pikachu’s direction at FERNANDO SILPH’s remark. For one thing, he… well, he had a rather strong opinion about kaijus suddenly coming to life.

And then there was the matter of someone who was stuck outside, along with so many other delivery riders who…

“Gimme like, five minutes. Gotta rescue someone,” he remarked as he noticed Lam waving from just outside—

Cramming the rest of the pizza into his mouth, he fought his way over to the entrance and then immediately spotted the odd one out wearing this ‘PIZZA’ cap and he sighed. He just sighed.

“Lam. You can take the cap off now, no wonder you’re stuck out here,” he joked as he immediately approached his fellow Birdfather™ and gave the younger man an affectionate noogie.

“No wonder you can’t get in, c’mon, let’s get your… ooh, you got more pizza and more drinks? Nice,” he chirped, looking over at the Decidueye that was carrying aforementioned drinks.

“Need a hand with the drinks?” he offered the greenette.

as noah takes his seat, his stuffs the rest of the tuna sandwich into his mouth. he readjusts his dynamax band, its feel around his wrist still unfamiliar as the second councilperson makes his arrival.[break][break]

"well buddy," the gym leader says, "if the pokemon goes out of control, that might be sign of bad training or a bad trainer."[break][break]

though noah is tempted to leave his seat to help too, lam logan is already rescued by Alexei Ivanov. he waves—and hopes his hand is seen behind towering boxes.

Baki doesn't even glance up from her phone as she brushes the man holding pizza aside. Bored, irreverent tone in her voice, she's more concerned with the little pop-up on the bottom of her screen.[break][break]

The sight still secretly fills her with dread.[break][break]

It's not til her Arbok gives a small hiss at the appearance of Hideo Kino and Alexei Ivanov behind her that Baki looks up. She notes the familiar faces, whispering along with the boy's words under her breath. Only after a moment's pause does she give the Lilycove Leader a very fake, warm smile. [break][break]

"Oh, it's you."[break][break]

Dull eyes with no emotion behind them size him up. [break][break]

She could probably take him in a fight. [break][break]

Using her pokemon, on the other hand... s'pose they'd cross that bridge when they came to it.[break][break]

"Why didn't'cha say so?"[break][break]

Not bothering with an apology, she reacts with a 👍 to the councilwoman and shoves her phone in her pocket quick after skimming Freya's texts. Stepping out of the way, she waves lam logan inside. [break][break]

"Go on in. Gotta check in with Freya anyway, I'll follow you guys up."[break][break]

One look at the people lined up giving her angry stares, and she tosses two pokeballs onto the pavement. Sakura and Momiji appear in a flash of light, jeering at the crowd like a couple of delinquents, not at all unalike their master.[break][break]

"Yo, Saku, Momo-- keep 'em out. Go wild if you need. I'm goin' inside."[break][break]

The two punk rockers seem pleased with the blank check, flexing their muscles and making faces to taunt the crowd. Those two can take care of anything. [break][break]

Door shuts behind them, and only the three Gym Leaders, Baki, and her snake remain. The warmth of the girl's pulse acts like a beacon for the snake in the dark stairwell, and she wraps her cold body around her legs.[break][break]

Why d'you need me, huh, Freya? What use am I in a place like this?[break][break]

Waiting til the two Leaders find their way inside, Baki stands alone in the entryway for a moment, fretting over what lies ahead. Collecting herself, she finally makes her way up.[break][break]
