THE WHITE FLAG DROPS!

THE LARGE CROWD SURROUNDING THE SANCTUARY ROARED, Josh Devlin and kyle lopez in an intense battle for the lead as the white flag waved above the starting line. Neither the blazing SHADOW TALONFLAME nor the purple-glowing DRAGONAIR backed down, side-to-side through the first few turns. The two were so close to one another that it was impossible to tell by the naked eye who was in the lead. Much of the field scrambled to command their Pokémon to raise their wings to create drag, the downward grade of the trail the course was based on making it difficult to passively shed speed.[break][break]

THE TUMULT OF THE FIRST TWO LAPS had stratified the field into two separate races: a battle for the lead, and a battle for 9th place. Andrea Vaneau and her SHINY GYARADOS had the most room to make up, but they were not out of the race yet; what looked like a dangerous tail strike turned out to be a well-timed BOUNCE as it flicked the long rear section of its body against the trail! While she still had a ways to go to catch the three racers in front of her, them being in sight now could have been the morale booster she needed to make a big push. [break][break]

WELL AHEAD OF Andrea Vaneau , the determined MATIAS SILPH and his DRAGONITE threw all caution to the wind. While the Volatile's lateral angle was perfect, he had miscalculated his angle of attack. By the time he attempted to pull up, it was too late; the dragon had suffered a painful tail strike. The powerful Pokémon was able to fight through the physical pain, getting back into the air as quickly as possible. While he remained in EIGHTH POSITION, Elise Calcifet 's NOIVERN and the dueling TOGEKISS that SONIKKU and El Sunderland were in command of were hot on his trail! The three rapidly shifted positions ranging from NINTH through ELEVENTH, and all threatened to pass the DRAGONITE if the standing Elite Four member didn't get up to speed in a hurry![break][break]

OVER TWO SECONDS AHEAD OF MATIAS SILPH , the front half of the field tightened up. While lam logan and oscar clayton noisily battled for FIFTH PLACE, sparks flying as the Ranger's TALONFLAME's talons barely scraped the ground, sapping the fire-type's speed a little. oscar clayton 's queasiness limited his ability to maneuver his BEEDRILL at high speeds, as well, preventing him from cutting off Julia Davis 's screaming SALAMENCE from rocketing past them both. The battle became one for SIXTH PLACE as Julia had opened a sizable gap ahead of them, alec foster and his persistent DRAGONITE in their sights.[break][break]

AS THE EMERGENT AND MASTER OF FASTER continued their daring duel through the oddly-angled curves, the discharge of INFINITY ENERGY from Alexei Ivanov 's SALAMENCE briefly startled both kyle lopez 's SHADOW TALONFLAME and Josh Devlin 's DRAGONAIR. The bright light of MEGA EVOLUTION bestowed the dragon with a second wind and the amped maneuverability needed to navigate the challenging elevation changes without slowing down. Try as he might, Josh and his serpentine dragon were simply unable to cut the Fortree Gym Leader off. Now it was Kyle and Alexei battling for the lead![break][break]

FINAL LAP | OBSTACLE 2

Prompt: Even after navigating a treacherous dive at an odd angle, the course did not relent: following it were a series of six downhill, 90-degree turns, one right after another, in the reverse shape of a dollar sign. The only mercy the Ordeal gave the competitors was a wide berth to fly through, but even the most nimble of flying Pokémon would not be able to take these turns at full speed! Pokémon that were incapable of hovering could find this series of turns especially challenging, perhaps needing to slow dangerously close to their stall speeds to get by without any scrapes![break][break]

DEADLY CURVES

CONTRARY TO THE PERCEPTION OF MANY not familiar with the intricacies of racing, technique is just as important, if not more important, as raw speed. These wicked turns would put the teams' breaking skills to the greatest test the course had to offer. Too much speed, and teams would find themselves with a face full of wood. Too little speed, and teams incapable of hovering would find themselves with a face full of dirt.[break][break]

EVERY BIT OF AIRSPACE WAS VALUABLE, larger Pokémon such as the GYARADOS piloted by Andrea Vaneau and the TOGEKISS piloted by SONIKKU. The GYARADOS made SPLASHING motions to try to bounce off the course's floor, maintaining speed while the back-and-forth curves flung their riders about. Blood rushed from one side of the head to the other, both laterally and vertically, as the two fought. In their dizziness, the two found themselves on a collision course, Andrea Vaneau coming out on top of the dangerous exchange. The cry of SONIKKU's TOGEKISS could be heard throughout the Fortree Gym property, a sign that the Ordeal had claimed a third victim.[break][break]

AHEAD OF THEM, MATIAS SILPH , El Sunderland , and Elise Calcifet followed one another closely. Though the course was wide, the turns were too tight to maintain a horizontal three-wide formation. Reining their TOGEKISS to the upper bounds of the course, the Ranger took full advantage of the Fairy-type's maneuverability and ability to hover, feeling like they were being thrown out of a slingshot with every curve. It worked, though, leaving Elise Calcifet and her NOIVERN behind in a battle with MATIAS SILPH . The standing Elite Four member's easing of pressure allowed his DRAGONITE to relax and fly as naturally as possible. Catching the slipstream at the very upper right corner of the course, the dragon-type effortlessly started coasting on it, zooming past not only Elise, but El as well. The Volatile was charging ahead; even oscar clayton and his BEEDRILL were in sight again, the GMH executive's hesitation to Mega Evolve his Pokémon letting the team make up a lot of ground.[break][break]

EVEN THE FRONT-RUNNERS STRUGGLED with the rapid-fire curves. Every Pokémon had to take a different approach, based on its individual skillset. The TALONFLAME of kyle lopez and lam logan took risky approaches, pushing their finesse to the metaphorical razor's edge. Their talons perfectly grazed the tree marking the first apex, but left them in terrible shape for the rest of the curves. They swerved from side to side, overcorrecting and bleeding time to try to stabilize their flight before the second set came. Their mistake also adversely affected Julia Davis and her SALAMENCE, who had only a split second to fly out of the way of not only the two fire-types, but alec foster 's DRAGONITE, as well. In the Fallarbor Gym Leader's overzealousness, he had taken a big limb of a tree with him from trying to cut the corner too sharply, without enough altitude to recover. While the two did not suffer any serious injuries, they were too shaken up to return to the race. The Ordeal had claimed yet another victim; now, only ten remained.[break][break]

ALL EXCEPT Alexei Ivanov STRUGGLED, THAT WAS: his SALAMENCE continued to gleam brilliantly with the light of MEGA EVOLUTION. The dragon-type's merged wing crescent bestowed the duo with improved racing performance. Had it not been for the Birdfather's heritage and great skill with flying Pokémon, he may have passed out after being exposed to the g-forces the rapid and sharp turns subject him to. Even if he didn't win the race, the daring move would almost certainly earn the Fortree Leader a spot on PSPN's highlight reel.[break][break]

COMING OUT OF THE INVERSION ON THE BACKSTRETCH, all that remained was a laterally narrow straightaway that gradually widened as the finish line approached. It would be a straight but narrow sprint to the end, the gallery on the edge of their seats, kyle lopez and Alexei Ivanov in an intense battle for the trophy![break][break]

FINAL LAP | OBSTACLE 3

Prompt: The home stretch was all that remained, an official standing near the starting arch and waving the checkered flag. There was little risk of an accident on this straight sprint to the finish! Now was the best opportunity for the flying Pokémon to give it everything they had![break][break]
