RACE DAY

THE SEASON OPENER WAS FINALLY HERE. Fortree's open-air Gym was filled with bleachers occupying thousands of racing fans eager for the race. There were a lot of big names present, including Mauville Gym Leader Josh Devlin and Fortree Gym Leader Alexei Ivanov , who were dark horses to win the race. 2022's Silph Cup champion, Isaac Merlo , was nowhere to be found. [break][break]

THIS SEASON, ALL EYES WERE ON Sonikku (vanessa rosiello ), who was swamped with fans looking for autographs. She had put up a Time Trial that nearly broke the long-standing record on Fortree Gym's most challenging racing route, the ORDEAL, which was the route being taken for today's competition. The skies were cloudy, conditions windy but still within safety limits, giving added depth to navigating the aerial course as quickly as possible.[break][break]

PLATINUM CLASS RACERS RAY BROOKS AND JODY SUMMERS would be calling the action from the skybox, their words echoing from the speakers of televisions tuned to Hoenn's largest sports television network, PSPN. The race was also being broadcast on many ChuTube channels, such as the Pokémon League's official competition channels, Fortree Gym's channel, and Josh Devlin 's personal channel. The race was being covered nationwide, with global viewership across all media outlets nearly one million.[break][break]

AS TIME COUNTED DOWN to the start of the race, the event's Master of Ceremonies took the microphone to welcome the gallery to Fortree Gym and introduce the event's sponsors. The long list included oscar clayton 's GMH and FERNANDO SILPH 's SILPH CO. Afterward, he explained the rules of the competition and called all fourteen teams onto the courtyard from which the starting line was located. Each team was dramatically introduced, with raucous applause and shrieking whistles following each. The racers were expected to line up in their positions on the starting grid after their names were called, determined by the results of the time trials. The racers were expected to stand next to and not astride their Pokémon after being called to the grid.[break][break]

Once everyone had lined up, the MC continued, "And now, FERNANDO SILPH will say the most famous words in all of Pokémon racing." The wealthiest man in all of Hoenn took the microphone and inhaled deeply, his booming voice amplified through the aviary's loudspeakers.[break][break]

"Ladies and gentlemen, mount your Pokémon!"

"You've been doing great, Akero." El smiled, as they ran their fingers through the angelic pokemon's crest - gently scritching him with their fingernails. "I can't believe we've managed to get this far!"

The togekiss, in response, would gently coo as he tilted his head into El's touch. The happiness radiating off of them, it felt wonderful to bask in it - and they seemed to have so much, more often than not! Really, it was what had drawn the both of them together in the first place - that kindness, that gentle cheer... And perhaps, the excitement that came along with the both of them getting to fly around together. It all worked out, for the both of them.

El chuckled in response - continuing to lavish attention upon the togekiss, as they looked over his equipment. Though Akero wasn't the fastest, he had good stamina and handled like a breeze. Maybe once the second and third laps came around, a well placed Tailwind or Extreme Speed would be able to propel the both of them straight to the lead!

Serving the role of a service pokemon, Bibidi would be present as well - and she was helping El in adjusting Akero's saddle and reins. It was tricky to do something like this on your own when one of your hands had to be occupied with a cane, after all. But even as she was busy with making sure that Akero was ready for the coming race...

... Her psychic awareness had spread out - quietly searching through the sea of minds around her, in an attempt to see if a familiar soul was here. Namely, the one who had given her to El. Sadly though, there was no signs at the present. The only familiar presences were that of other people that El had spoken to and met before - such as that of Julia Davis. Which, speaking of her...

El glanced up as they finished securing the saddle on Akero - and in doing so, they'd spot her and her salamence, Drake. They'd give her a big wave as they approached - smiling brightly. "Hey, uhm- I hope you and Drake have a good time. You two did great in the qualifiers!" They spoke, adding "Akero and I are excited to try our best, too!"

As if in agreement, Akero would call in their direction with a melodic chirrup.

Though, Julia wouldn't be the only one who had El's attention. Noticing Josh Devlin and his dragonair - Resheph - out of the corner of their eye, their gaze would drift in the other duo's direction. For a moment, they couldn't help but fidget - wondering whether to talk to him now, or later. They certainly wanted to - they wanted to ask him about something. Yet, as silly as it might sound, they couldn't help but find a sudden burst of nerves whenever the idea crossed their mind...

The blond-haired trainer known as Elio DaCosta sat proudly atop his Gyarados, Leviathan. Grinning widely he patted the thick, coarse, scales of the sea serpent pokemon as the giant creature gave out a bellowing noise of contentment.

"Right, don't worry Levi! We can do this! Don't sweat it! Even if we somehow lose at least we'll have a great time!" This was more to psych himself up and deal with any possible feelings of crippling defeat.

More than the feelings of the flying serpent pokemon. But Elio didn't need anyone to know that. The Gyarados let out a low roar as it smiled as much as its naturally angry face could.

It was downright terrifying to everyone else who knew of the pokemon's infamous reputation. Elio of course didn't like that nonsense. As long as you raised them right Gyarados was as loyal as a docile Yamper!

Looking at the racing track he noticed Josh Devlin as he gave a wave, speaking out to his friend. "Yo! Josh! Wish ya luck! No matter what, let's have fun!" He expressed earnestly before turning his attention to El Sunderland a bit less friendly but friendly nonetheless. "Good luck to you as well, kid!"

The mafiaoso was brimming with excitement, fire burning through his veins. Though at the moment he wasn't sure if it was the poison or just the fire of his resolve. Hopefully, it was the latter... But regardless of what it was, Elio was excited to see this race to its end!

Having made it to the Fortree Gym, Olliver couldn't help but survey the area. The various other racers had been gathering in and the crowd had begun to completely fill in. The number of people within the area had been.. far more than he had anticipated. It was almost anxiety provoking, being surrounded by this many individuals. Almost.

The fact that this had been getting essentially livestreamed to the world as well had been yet another thing that he hadn't quite anticipated. Whilst there were those that would likely never come to recognize him, if he wasn't careful, it was entirely likely that people would remember him in the future. That having been said, Olliver was going to need to take things a bit more cautiously here. "If only I thought of wearing a helmet or something.."

These were the kinds of thoughts that Olliver couldn't be having right now. The more anxious he got, the worse things would play out for him. That having been said, Olliver would take the time to compose himself for putting on a stoic face and calling forth his Metagross. "I'm not sure how things are going to go out here but.. We've got this buddy." A soft pat would be offered to the metallic creature as Olliver had quickly reminded himself of the rules.

Given that there wasn't really too many people that he had known here, aside from perhaps Josh and Elise, Olliver would simply remain beside his Metagross and would wait for things to begin. He couldn't afford to out his relations here and now. No.. Not unless they came to him first. As such, unless anyone had come to speak with him before the match begun, Olliver would remain beside his Pokemon before ultimately mounting it for the race.

TLDR: Olliver arrived, noted that Elise and Josh were here but chose not to interact with them unless they come to him first, then opts to mount his Metagross as directed just before the race. This is subject to change if anyone interacts with him.

The Fortree gym had the feeling of freedom with its open air space which made her heart pound a bit with excitement over being in the big race along with the other flyers. Out of the people in the crowd of partakers, only three of them were recognizable to her and one that she was comfortable talking to. “It is good to see you again, Josh. This race does make me a bit nervous in my racing performance compared to your standing as the Master of Faster.” She spoke to Josh Devlin , trying to hide her nervousness though she could do her best as her Noivern gave her some chitters of reassurance.[break][break]

To alec foster , the woman spoke with a nod to the orange-haired man. “And though I haven’t had a chat with you since the expedition we were on together, I hope you will do well in the race, best of luck.” Her Noivern made a few excited sounds though the dragon type would stay still since the time would be good for the woman to have some small talk.

Andrea’s last dip into the wonderful world of racing had ended with several near-death experiences in a row when she took on Josh Devlin’s Wave Panic course. So naturally, she decided it was a great idea to do it again!

There were some familiar faces among their fellow competitors, most notably Champion kyle lopez, Elite Four MATIAS SILPH, and the racing prodigy (and part-time gremlin) SONIKKU. Whiskers towered over nearly every other Pokémon assembled at the starting grid, save for @elio’s own Gyarados, aptly named Leviathan.

FERNANDO SILPH, being the benevolent philanthropist that he was, was one of the sponsors for this illustrious event, and even had a few words to say before the race started. A man of few words as always, he invited the racers to mount their Pokémon. Andrea did so, climbing on top of the massive sea serpent’s head and using its large horns as handlebars.

“Let’s do this, Whiskers! We’ll make everyone believe that a Gyarados can fly!” The dragon-costumed girl resolutely declared. Her shiny Gyarados roared affirmatively, floating just a few inches off the ground in preparation of things kicking off.

TL;DR: Andrea mounts Whiskers and gets ready for the race to start.

Alec was getting Veta, his Dragonite ready for the race. As he was doing so, Elise Calcifet had walked up to him; greeting him as well as wishing him luck in the race. "Thanks, Elise. Same goes for you and your Noivern," he said, giving her a friendly smile. Shortly after the two of them, spoke to one another, Veta nudged him, pointing towards a very familiar face. kyle lopez . Alec wanted right then there to walk up to him and talk, however, He was also preparing for the race as well. "I'm pretty sure he'll notice me soon enough." Alec thought to himself. The two of them needed to have a chat ... A chat that alec didn't know how to start. After all, everyone thought he was dead. And now that he was back here in Hoenn, that would change. Hell, chances are that the news had already caught wind of him being alive.

Alec sighed, looking up at the ceiling. Admittedly, he wasn't sure if signing up for this race was a good idea. However, Josh Devlin recommended it to him, and even though racing wasn't his thing, he felt that declining Josh's recommendation would seem rude, so Alec reluctantly accepted. Speaking of the 'Master of Faster', the dragon tamer also noticed him getting ready for the race as well. Alec gave him a slight wave over where he stood.

From top spot to somewhere in the middle—well, it was to be perfectly fair, alright to start from the middle. Because see what happened the last time he started from the front—he was immediately swept towards the middle of the pack and never got past tenth place afterward in the previous race he took part in.

Today, however?

T’was best to keep his best ace in the hole quiet, and take everyone by surprise once the actual race time happened. Plus, the last time he was in a race he was with his own Galarian Rapidash, Azula—and the ground wasn’t exactly one of his best routes.

Up in the air, however?

It was time to actually ~~bare the fangs~~ show what he was really capable of!

Picking out faces in the crowd, he was not surprised to see that more or less close to half of them were people he either knew by close association, or by sight, or simply because they lived in Fortree like he did.

His Salamence was huffing by his side—and as always, no saddle or reins, it was just him and Gabriel ready to take to the skies.

“I know, I know… so many others, right? Best we fly on the down low and surprise them all at the end, don’t you think?” he cackled quietly as he gave the draconid an affectionate neck rub.

Despite racing being well inside Josh's wheelhouse, season opener nerves affected even him. The seats surrounding Fortree Gym's famous outdoor battle facility were filled to capacity. He had closed his Gym for the entire day, and had bought tickets for every single one of his Gym's employees to watch him race against thirteen of Hoenn's finest Pokémon racers! So many of them were familiar faces, too!

"Didn't expect to see you here, Elio!" Josh called out to his friend @elio , the blue serpent next to him towering over even Resheph. Dragon energy started to build from the Dragonair's tail. "I know you're excited, but save it for the race, girl!" He turned his attention back toward the young man. "I didn't think you'd be much of a racer, but I'm glad you're competing! Resheph and I aren't cutting you any slack, though. You better be ready to go fast!"

As the duo wandered, Josh caught sight of Elise Calcifet , who was tring to get his attention. "Ah, Princess Elise! Glad to ee you here, too. You ever want to practice, you're welcome to come to my Gym in Mauville!" While he wouldn't be taking any challengers, there was nothing stopping him from teaching people how to ride! He waved back to alec foster before his name was called to line up and get ready to take off. He started sweating beneath his helmet, uncomfortably close to oscar clayton 's Beedrill's rear sting as he mounted his Dragonair and started floating just his position on the grid.

"I know you're excited, Drake, but save that energy for the race!" Julia called between giggles as Drake flew in circles around his trainer. He couldn't help it! He was just so excited to be racing through the skies and testing his mettle against other Pokémon! But at his trainer's words, he came to a mid-air stop and gave her a look. It took Julia a moment to realize what it meant: "Oh, man, I'm starting to sound like Dad." Drake rumbled agreement.

[break][break]Despite that, she convinced Drake to land just long enough for her to adjust his saddle and reins. As she was doing so, the Salamence turned toward a familiar presence and let out a short roar of greeting. Julia looked up to see El Sunderland waving as they approached her. "Hey, El!" Julia greeting, waving back. "You guys'll do great, I just know it."

[break][break]She could still barely believe she'd come in second in the qualifiers. Drake's enthusiasm had carried them this far, and now, it was time for the real test. There were plenty of other familiar faces in this competition, too, but one notable one was missing: the previous year's champion, Isaac Merlo and his Buffaloman. She wondered if he was watching now.

[break][break]Of course, Josh Devlin was here, chatting with a few of the other racers. El was looking at him, fidgeting nervously.

El blinks a bit, snapped from their thoughts by Julia Davis 's voice - and glancing to her, they smiled a little sheepishly. "I-I'm okay," They're quick to reassure Julia - flashing her a brighter smile, as if to try and make the statement more convincing. The last thing they wanted was to needlessly worry anyone, when they were just having antsy nerves.

As @elio waved and called to them next though, El blinked - glancing in the other's direction. They weren't entirely sure as to how they felt about being called a 'kid' - (they were an adult now!) - but they nonetheless offered a smile and wave back. "You too!"

Casting one more glance towards Josh Devlin though, they'd briefly fidget again as they turned their attention back to Julia briefly. "I think I'm gonna, uhm, ask Gym Leader Devlin something - before the race starts." They weren't sure what would be the best way to address him - but being formal was likely the safest bet, right? Smiling to Julia one more time, they waved and mentioned "You two have fun with the race!"

And with that, El would step away - moving to approach Josh. There were others addressing and talking with him - but when a lull in the conversations arrived, El would shove down their nerves so that they could speak up. "G-Gym Leader Devlin - uhm... My name is El, I'm a trainee ranger here in Fortree - could we talk, after the race is over?" They questioned, giving a nervous - but earnest - smile. "There's something I'd like to ask about, i-if it isn't any trouble."

a lot of the previous contestants make their way to the track once again. some faces were starting to get familiar, especially those who attend the hoenn monthly of supernatural events.

there were newcomers though, one of which he recognizes. when he hears alec foster's name, kyle immediately looks for him among the crowd. when he sees him preparing, he gives himself a mental note to approach after the race. he always appeared to him as the diligent-type, so he figured he'd leave him to his preparation until then.

MATIAS SILPH comes to view soon. he sends a text message before minding his own business again, trying to corral the highly unstable pokemon he's entered with into calmness.

Oscar had been kicking himself ever since he missed the sign ups for last year's race. What an absolute blunder, he would have cleaned up the competition faster than a--really fast pokemon. Whatever, FUCK IT! FUCK! IT! The past is gone, at least he made it into today's race.

He felt especially invested in this challenge, as it was hosted by the elusive Josh Devlin. Well, he was not at all elusive but Oscar could not seem to pin the gym leader of his base-city down long enough to meet him. Like, first he just wanted to shake his hand or something but the longer it took to encounter Mister Devlin the more driven Oscar became to know him. How was Oscar supposed to destroy him so that he could take over Mauville if he could not even meet the guy!?

Oscar figured that supporting and taking part in Josh's race would be a good way to at least exchange prolonged eye contact, and as luck would have it the gym leader would be placed not too far behind Oscar's starting position. Oscar was already mounted on Lancer the beedrill's back, the both of them sporting vintage flying ace costumes. Oscar slowly looked behind him, his large goggles reflecting the sun. As he set his sights on his competition, he would give them all a nod and salute--though he was careful to aim toward Mister Devlin in particular.

Oscar turned back to Lancer leaning over to talk to his steed. "You ready to slaughter these jokers?" Lancer made a serious of buzzing noises that emulated an engine revving up, and Oscar would cackle manically in response. "What a beautiful day for a race!"

It was a great day for racing, with Vanessa feeling as pumped as ever. After a very good training course in prep for this event, the young rider was giddy as ever. Faye, the Togekiss that was slowly following behind her fluttered her wings every now and again. Upon entering the racing zone, she'd make a b line straight for none other than Josh Devlin and puff her chest out in pride. "Don't worry, Josh! You're favorite rival has arrived~ Hope you're ready to eat my dust!" she cheered out and made small talk alongside letting El Sunderland have a chitchat with Josh before she had so rudely interrupted. SHe'd pal around and talk with the two of them as the chaotic competitor was eager to get ready and in the zone.
