Behind him, his talonflame hovers—geared up for the race. This is a challenge that will certainly prove interesting, having not entered into the running before. Strangers and friends alike seem to mingle in the group, and he spies one as he hovers on the outskirts.[break][break]

Flagging him with a short wave, Lam points at MATIAS SILPH as a bright smile spreads across his face. It hovers for a moment and then slackens in tandem with the swift thumbs down he gives his buddy. Because he’s goin’ down![break][break]

Short, brief nods are given to anyone else he recognizes, though they are few and far between. His attention swiftly turns back to Ziti, smoothing over the feathers atop the talonflame’s head as he coaxes her toward the starting gate.[break][break]

“We got this, we totally got this.” Her beak clicks in response, which he takes as agreement. One of the more determined of his team—a good thing, because despite his mellower personality he proves competitive when it comes to games and contests.

THE GREEN FLAG DROPS!

THE NORMALLY SLEEPY FORTREE CITY was as loud as a metropolis, Gym Leader Alexei Ivanov 's fans lining the stands to cheer their local favorite on. Three of these fifteen Ultra Class racers would earn their card to the prestigious Master Class, where they would be racing for life-changing sums of money and fame against the best the world had to offer. While there were crowd favorites such as SONIKKU, Gym Leader Josh Devlin , Elite Four MATIAS SILPH , and Top Champion kyle lopez , it was truly anyone's race. Andrea Vaneau and Elise Calcifet were dark horses to win the race, and no one could sleep on Julia Davis either, having put up a strong showing toward the end of the 2022 season.[break][break]

THE RAUCOUS BUZZING OF oscar clayton 's BEEDRILL got the crowd amped up, drowning out all noise the other Pokémon made. The noise was unsettling to those nearby in the starting grid; in particular, it would have rung loudly in the ears of Josh Devlin and Andrea Vaneau , El Sunderland and Alexei Ivanov able to feel the tremendous wake of wind from the giant wings beating invisibly fast. Those near alec foster and MATIAS SILPH could also hear the humming of the wings of their DRAGONITE, eager to burst into EXTREME SPEED when it was both legal and appropriate. The remainder of the Pokémon had their wings raised, serpentine bodies flexed, or in the case of olliver samovar 's METAGROSS, mind ready to work at full speed in propelling them down the course in anticipation of the green light.[break][break]

JUST AS THE COUNTDOWN WAS TO BEGIN, the officials had to halt the start of the race after identifying a serious safety issue: olliver samovar was astride his Gyarados with no helmet on! Within minutes, there was an official on a Pidgeot ferrying a lavender-colored helmet with the Fortree Gym logo on it to him, mandating he wear it before the green flag drops. After all, with no head protection, a fall at the speeds these Pokémon would get to could easily be lethal! Once it was secured properly, the official left his METAGROSS to resume getting ready.[break][break]

THE RACERS' ATTENTION was squarely on the digital screen above the starting arch. Aural warnings from both the Gym's loudspeakers and from FERNANDO SILPH 's voice would give them ample indication of when to push their Pokémon to a high speed start. The executive's voice burst across the loudspeakers, "Battle routine set!", as though they were at Slateport City Gym.[break][break]

A LOUD SQUAWK blared from the arch's speakers at T minus ten seconds, and several other speakers throughout the facility, prompting the racers to be ready. Three images of an artist's depiction of the Great Djinni Tornadus, in its Therian Forme, appeared on the arch's display, overlaying an orange "GET READY" prompt. Another squawk at T minus three seconds as the third image from the left began to fade. Another at T minus two as the middle image faded. A third as the final one faded. A higher-pitched squawk nearly drowned out the Silph CEO's cry, "Execute!" as the final image faded, the MC waving the green flag and the prompt changing to "GO".[break][break]

Prompt: After a dive off the rooftops serving as the starting grid, two right angle turns, one right after another, require steep banks to navigate without slowing down. After exiting the turns, racers have less than two seconds to make a decision: do they swerve right and take the safe path around a small thicket of petrified trees, or attempt to take a risky shortcut through them? The trees are narrowly spaced, necessitating Pokémon to bank almost completely vertical to make their bodies narrow enough to pass through![break][break]

Target Number 1: 150 (Speed)[break][break]

Special 1: Pokémon who roll at or above this Obstacle's Target Number will gain 80 TP in addition to the normal TP gained. Pokémon that roll beneath this Obstacle's Target Number will lose 50 TP and be diverted to the longer route (Target Number 2) instead.[break][break]

With no more time to talk, El would have to rush a little - with Bibidi's aid - to settle themself into Akero's saddle. They're someone with many hopes - although the main one on their mind, as they find and grasp the reins, is that Josh Devlin will be willing to talk, and will recognize what - who - they're looking for...

... But as Akero chirrups beneath them - wings fluttering with excitement - El can't help but blink, before smiling softly down at him. "Let's do this, buddy." They speak softly and encouragingly, running their fingers through the fairy-type's crest. "You'll do great, I know you will - we did great getting this far in the first place."

Akero, happy to feel the positive and encouraging feelings coming off of El, would trill in response - readying himself for the race to come. And Bibidi, giving the two one last mental brush of her own in encouragement, would return to El's pokeball - ready to come out if need be, but otherwise not about to interfere with the race.

The countdown was tense - everyone was likely looking to start with a bang, the second the race started. It was hard to worry too hard with Akero gently cooing, however - even if El's eyes did remain locked on the countdown. 3, 2, 1...-

And GO!

Alongside the other competitors, El takes off on Akero - the Togekiss whistling in joy as he takes to the air. Following the right angle turns, El joins in the whistle with a delighted laugh as they hang on to the reins for dear life - even if there are straps on the saddle, to help keep them from falling off. Even if Akero isn't the fastest, he moves like a breeze - the only thing keeping him from twirling about as he pleases being the fact that he has a passenger.

The coming obstacle was sure to put that maneuverability to the test, however - El angling low to Akero's back in preparation. One way or another, they were going to do their best..!

Alec stared intently into the deep expanse that the racing track, waiting patiently for the signal to go. Alec didn't even really take another glance at the racers. Instead, all he would do was smirk at Veta and said while sitting on her back, "You got this Veta!" Sure, the competition was tense, but Alec had faced various types, including death, and despite that, managed to still be alive.

The moment the prompt in front of Alec and the other racers changed from Get Ready to Go, Veta took off, as did the other racers. Alec figured that saving the use of his TERA ORB for later in the race, not wanting to waste it. What's more, is that Alec also had to keep in mind of Veta herself. As Veta flew, she felt exhilarated, feeling the wind brush against her wings. After the right-angle turns, which were a breeze for Veta with the help of Alec's steering, the dragon tamer saw a fork in the road. As they were getting closer, Alec noticed that one seemed rather longer, prompting him to steer Veta into the shorter path, where the trees on both sides made the path narrow. Veta turned attempted to turn her body vertically so that she and Alec could try to safely pass through the trees.

Andrea covered her ears in order to withstand Lancer’s raucous buzzing, feeling it shake her to her very core. Shalin Nariya wasn’t kidding when she said that vibrating Pokémon were the toughest to get accustomed to. Whiskers let out a deep bellow in response, furling and unfurling her dorsal fins that doubled as wind sails.

With FERNANDO SILPH signaling the start of the race, it was time for the draconic duo to make good on their promise. Yes, not many people knew this, but Gyarados could indeed fly, hence why they were partially Flying types. The scarlet dragon soared through the sky gracefully, its wavy, serpentine form looking like a koinobori from a distance.

Already Fortree’s unique landscape presented a challenge: How would a gigantic Pokémon like Gyarados be able to navigate the verdant sea of trees? “We’ll just have to go straight through it! Right, Whiskers?” The sea serpent growled in agreement with its rider, turning its body completely straight, and zipping through the narrow opening like a large, red arrow.

TL;DR: Whiskers turns her body completely straight in order to pass through the shortcut.

Of course, being the Birdfather™, safety was already a given—asides from the aviator goggles that were hanging from around his neck, he’d already crammed a lavender-colored helmet with the undeniable stylized design of the Wandering Stormbringer as he quickly slipped on Gabriel’s back.

“Now, I know you want to go all the way fuck out, but we don’t have the liberty just yet, okay? So just, like, keep it cool until we can actually unleash our ace in the hole.”

The Salamence turned around to huff at him, but he calmed the rumbling beast down with a neck rub as he leaned down into the draconid’s neck as the starting pistol went off.

(Thankfully, precious little knew that he wasn’t one to get airsick no matter the sudden change in altitude.)

“Gee, I wonder what Ethan and Claire are gonna say when they see this madness happening,” he hummed to himself as he cackled softly, turning their attention toward the grove of petrified trees.

“I know, I know—don’t go too crazy,” he went on while the Salamence grumbled. “But trust me, okay?”

Julia took her place astride Drake at the starting block, feeling the Salamence flex his legs beneath her, barely able to stop himself from taking off right then and there. He growled his annoyance at the delay that olliver samovar's lack of safety gear caused, and Julia stroked his neck to soothe him.

[break][break]Drake's wings flared when the countdown began. Knowing she'd need to give it her all from the get-go against her fellow racers, Julia put on her game face, leaned forward in the saddle, and gripped the reins. She didn't even need to squeeze her mount's sides at the signal to go; immediately, Drake launched into the air and soared forward. Time to fly!

[break][break]Though Drake was still relatively new to flying and hadn't quite found what he excelled at, he'd been training hard with Julia, allowing the duo to take the right-angle turns without much problem. Then, a decision: did they charge straight forward or take the safe path around? Drake didn't want to slow down, and Julia felt confident they could make it. Straight forward it was, then!

MATIAS SILPH's taunt is met with a loud "Boooooo!!" from Lam to his back. Plus more thumbs down if he's looking, though he's pretty sure the elite four member is not. For the better anyway, because he soon slips into focus as he pulls his goggles down over his eyes in preparation.[break][break]

With Ziti in place at takeoff, the talonflame shoots off from the launch point, tucking into the sharp turns and banking at the exact right times to catch the wind in her feathers to take each right angle turn neatly. "Around, not through. Not just yet."[break][break]

No vertical shifts right off the bat. They can afford to be a little more showy later, maybe. For now, they stick to slightly more secure in that split second as they veer in an arc around the foliage.[break][break]

Hearing the announcer start the race off, the racers had mounted their rides to fly off the starting grid over the course being the river banks and the trees. While she would have responded to those who talked to her and namely that Josh was helpful to give her an offer to come to his gym for riding lessons, the woman mounted her Noivern to have Koko take off to the air. [break][break]

She steered her Noivern to take the two right angle turns until there was two paths being the easier one and the other being the hardest. The trees in the harder and risky path didn’t appear to be something her Noivern could do, so she would steer her dragon type into taking the safer path into the small thicket of trees.

It seemed that Alexei Ivanov had taken inspiration from Mauville Gym for the setup at his own. The Birdfather had told him a story about the trio of Pokémon the green, cloud-tailed bird that appeared in Raikou's place on the electronic banner. The young man slipped his visor down early when oscar clayton's Beedrill roared his wings, the wake of displaced air stinging more than the noise rung in his ears. Once his visor clicked into place, the sound was still loud, but much more bearable. Resheph lurched away as the terrifying creature's deadly rear sting came close to her.

Josh tensed up as the countdown began, raising his hands to flick the Dragonair's reins much like a whip the moment that fourth buzzer sounded and the green flag wove above the starting grid. Three... two... one... GO!

And with that, the airspace above Fortree Gym quickly became crowded as fourteen of Hoenn's finest battled in a chaotic contest of speed. The competitors guided their Pokémon in a dive off the rooftop to rapidly accelerate, the wind whipping around Josh as he guided his Dragonair toward the outside of the first right-angle curve in an effort to take both turns without slowing down. Turning wasn't the Dragonair's specialty; it had to be supplemented with quite a bit of the Gym Leader's own strength to avoid braking.

Then the fork came. If Josh knew there was one thing his Dragonair was good at, it was speed. While raw speed was important, Josh had to have quick thinking of his own. Remembering what happened last time he wanted to just ensure he finished the big race at his own Gym, he squinted toward the small gap in the trees. Resheph's narrow body and lack of wings meant she could fly through the gap with Josh upright, rather than the myriad of winged Pokémon that needed to turn vertical, but the path through the petrified trees wasn't straight! Between the hardened trees the duo went, Josh keeping both his hands on the reins, ready to make micro-adjustments as needed to follow the skinny path!

Oscar's anticipation grew as the start of the race neared. He pushed himself close to Lancer's back, his hands tightly clasping the small reigns at the top of the beedril's saddle. His legs locked into Lancer's waist, ensure that Oscar would be both safe and aerodynamic. Lancer reered his lance like 'claws' back, pointing them behind him. He shall have little need for them in the first round, best to keep them out of the way to create as little air resistance as possible.

Then...THEY WERE OFF!

Oscar clicked his heels against Lancer, and the beedril took off with a roar-like buzz. Oscar cackled with fiendish glee as they dove off the rooftop, Lancer's speed already sending shivers of adrenaline down Oscar's spine.

Then came the first obstacle, which Oscar did not fear in the slightest. Lancer was a slim pokemon with a solid acceleration, so Oscar was confident in his steed's ability to weave through the trees. Of course in the pit of his stomach Oscar feared slamming into a tree, but he pushed such anxiety away with his uproarious chortling. After all, it was too late to back out. Might as well give it one hundred percent!

he reads MATIAS SILPH' text message before stuffing his phone back to his pocket. maybe he'll set a higher goal in mind this time instead of going middle of the pack.

then again, he did enter with a much more unstable pokemon than last time.

the timer ticks down, and everyone zooms past each other. early leads were made and different decisions were decided by the contestants. while different approaches helped them prevent into funneling into one corridor, it does pose different pros and cons.

given his choice of pokemon, he was given no choice on the matter. he decides to rely on his pokemon's instinct, zooming within the shortest path possible within the expanse of trees.

"No problem! We got this in the bag, Faye!" Sonikku said, hopping up and down on her saddle while the girl continued to eagerly get ready for the take off. At the moment of take off, the two of them soared into the lanes. Sonikku grinned ear to ear, shouting at the top of her lungs as Faye speed towards the upper path, aiming to focus more on her speed than handling. "Alright, Faye! Just like we practiced! Let's smoke these losers." The Togekiss chirped in agreement, with Sonikku putting her head down as she ducked behind the Togekiss, their bodies parallel to reduce the amount of drag on their bodies.

INTO THE WOODS!

FORTREE CANNOT BE SPELLED WITHOUT TREE, as the more daring racers in the field would soon find out! @elio and his GYARADOS timed their takeoff perfectly, the young man's reaction time mere hundredths of a second as he led the race in its opening seconds, with oscar clayton and his BEEDRILL's discordant wings not far behind. The bug-type's foreleg stings were stretched toward the aquatic serpent not to attack, but to minimize drag. A traffic jam ensued at the first two right-angle turns as racers fought for position. alec foster , MATIAS SILPH , and their DRAGONITE had a fierce duel for the inside line, both cutting the other off every time either made an attempt to pass.[break][break]

AFTER THE TWO TURNS FLUNG RACERS side to side in their cocoon saddles, they had precious seconds to make their decision: follow the track around a right bend, or push their Pokémon through a narrow corridor that required racers to not only maintain almost perfectly straight flight, but also fly against the air current of the wind tunnel the narrow, petrified thicket imposed![break][break]

THOSE ABOARD POKEMON their riders felt were more technically inclined veered right around the bend, which came with its own hazards: a low ceiling meant that multidirectional control would be needed. @elio would prove to be a master of technical control over his GYARADOS, feeling his helmet just barely graze the canopy as his stomach dipped from navigating the downhill turn. Other racers that rode more well-rounded Pokémon, such as Alexei Ivanov , alec foster , lam logan , El Sunderland , and olliver samovar , leaned into the wind and guided their flying Pokémon around the bend, banking on their technical prowess to let them make up time on the swifter Pokémon later in the race. There were some extremely technical curves on the backstretch, after all! Unbeknownst to the Fortree Gym Leader, Ethan and Claire were watching the race on TV while catching up on Gym Battle reporting for the League, the broadcast momentarily focused on the battle the Gym Leader was having with El Sunderland , lam logan , and olliver samovar for NINTH PLACE.[break][break]

MORE DARING RACERS that trusted in their high speed took the straight and treacherous narrow path ahead. It was treacherous, with the canopy above and jagged tree stumps below from when lightning once cleaved through the area. The serpentine and otherwise narrow-bodied Pokémon, such as oscar clayton 's BEEDRILL and Josh Devlin 's DRAGONAIR, had the easiest time, making clean entrances and exits, finding them near the front of the pack. alec foster and MATIAS SILPH 's duel over whose Dragonite was faster aggressively continued despite the hazards, both of them also cleanly flying through the field of petrified trees that sounded like an air gun was being repeatedly fired into their ears when they shot past them. More wide-bodied Pokémon, such as SONIKKU's TOGEKISS and Elise Calcifet 's NOIVERN, though, had to tilt their bodies almost perpendicular to the ground. Blood rushed to the sides of the riders' heads as the two leaned in. The fairy-type's exit was clean, but the princess mistimed her counter-roll at the very end, the verminous dragon letting out a screech as she momentarily lost lift from her left wing clipping a tree. As she got back up to speed, she found herself joining the dueling Kantonian dragons in a battle for SIXTH PLACE.[break][break]

THERE WERE MISCUES, the Ordeal showing why it had gained that respected title. Julia Davis had her eyes on the narrow shortcut, as well, the SALAMENCE staring at the narrow path she saw her friend Josh Devlin and his DRAGONAIR floating through. A gust from the wind tunnel blew the leading edges of her SALAMENCE's wings downward. If she continued straight ahead, she was going to slam face-first into the treeline! She was forced to frantically pull up and to the right with all her strength, still bouncing off the trees but at an angle that would let the Salamence retain her speed. It was a good thing Federation safety was so extensive, otherwise that collision would have hurt! She and Andrea Vaneau 's SHINY GYARADOS were forced to divert around the outer bend, with the added penalty of having lost most of their speed. Though they were at the back of the pack, there was still plenty of race to go, and they'd have a better feel for the gap on future laps![break][break]

kyle lopez AND HIS SHADOW TALONFLAME had spent a lot of time in practice the day before after just barely qualifying, and their practice had clearly paid off. The fire-type flew so high that the Top Champion's helmet grazed the canopy as he entered the narrow grove, then his mount tucked its wings in, diving through the shorter path. The speedy bird glowed like a red, orange, and yellow comet as they made the sharp turn editing the thicket of rock-hard trees, cutting off @elio and LEADING THE RACE.[break][break]

Prompt: Several more ups and downs followed the bend around the petrified grove, some of which had very sharp turns immediately following them. The next thirty seconds of the course would be a constant battle of altitude and yaw management ending in a steep dive that was also at an angle! Without the correct roll and angle of attack, it would be easy to fly into the woods surrounding the course and bounce out of control![break][break]
