The whistle blew, the green flag was raised, and off the racers were. Wedged in between and , Leilani and her Blastoise were a part of the initial surge forth as everybody would shoved their way into the front of the pack.

There was a lot of chatting, more than Lei had thought there would be. She wasn't the best at it, not like Mahina was. So maybe this could be a good time to try and work on that thing? The Rocket arced her back when the signs of the first obstacle appeared over the horizon. A series of twisting turns lied in store for the racers ahead. Lei steadied herself and knelt down on her pokemon to prepare.

riding a wailord felt stranger than most other water-type pokemon he has ridden, but he'll adjust.

having it minimized looked weird for a pokemon as large as wailord, especially when it still looked normal beside the few pokemon that joined the race. regardless, he will be taking it easy for the first half of the race to acclimate himself with the course.

his wailord, on the other hand, had a different agenda.

it joins the other pokemon zooming past each other. kyle holds on, trying to coax it to a more respectable speed, but rapids left by the pokemon that went past them was inviting for the wailord.

kyle sighs, giving in to the hype.

Thomas' expression is one of intense focus. The Kalosian takes an optimal stance on the back of the Basculegion, leaning in as he waits for the signal.

When given the greenlight, Thomas and Ermac set off. With an Aqua Jet, the Basculegion raced through the course. Built for attrition, rather than speed had its advantages. And though the course was wide, Thomas felt that the Basculegion would be easier to handle when things likely got tight.

As the dive came up, Thomas took a deep breath, before holding it as they became submerged.

THE FINAL IMAGE OF SUICUNE DISAPPEARED, and the sixteen qualifiers were off, rough surf from the closely-packed field's wake rocking nearly every trainer and their swift aquatic Pokémon. 's late reaction time off the starting line left her trailing by more and more as her DRAGONAIR's tail swished back and forth in the water. Without close proximity to the rest of the field blocking the current as its relative direction shifted with the opening turns, she fell even farther behind as she came up to the dive.[break][break]

FROM FRONT TO BACK, traffic elsewhere in the field was heavy, incidental contact among the Pokémon piloted by , , , and inevitable. The small WOOPER's SYNC STONE hummed; through the power of their special bond approaching its apex state, they could keep up with even the agile KINGDRA and VAPOREON next to them. Though the CARRACOSTA found itself dangerously close to the sandbars, having to choose between going four-wide across the rip currents or yielding to its fellow racers, it was in a great position to break away from them and reach more open waters. A highly localized WHIRLPOOL followed the KINGDRA on the outside, helping pull the aquatic dragon into the short, submerged passage.[break][break]

EVEN AT ITS MINIMIZED SIZE, 's WAILORD left quite the wake. Steering the aquatic giant proved to be challenging; its size gave the Top Champion a good look at the rest of the field, but that size also proved to be a liability, the current affecting it more. Kyle surged through the ranks easiiy, 's GOLISOPOD and 's BLASTOISE unable to remain stable in the rough surf. Even the power of a SYGNA SUIT would not let 's FROAKIE fully overcome it, barely outpacing the other larger water-types around him. The SHARPEDO bearing put a stop to it, the water it expelled from its rear slowing the whale down just enough to prevent it from passing them. That extra space they had gained proved crucial in entering the tunnel cleanly, the WAILORD behind them churning its tail rapidly to counter the buoyancy of its light body to stay submerged long enough to make it through.[break][break]

STANDING ON HIS AEGISLASH LIKE A SURFBOARD, the gallery roared for . Though the ghostly sword was very slow to get up to speed, its sleek body let the ghost-type cut through the water as cleanly and effortlessly as its Sacred Sword rent through flesh and bone. The Galarian knight rode the waves skillfully, sandwiched in between 's BARRASKEWDA and 's larger BASCULEGION. When he gave the command to use AQUA JET, the giant, otherworldly fish shook him, upsetting his balance just enough to get his attention but not to buck him off. Did he forget that Aqua Jet was disallowed during the first lap? Thankfully for him, his Pokémon had that covered! He might not be so lucky next time...[break][break]

PROFESSIONAL MANTINE SURFER proved to the field why he qualified on the pole; with almost zero reaction time and immaculate acceleration and stability, the Alolan's MANTINE sliced through the inside of every turn, gained just enough lift under his wings to effortlessly bounce along the current's surface, and pulled well ahead of and the Master of Faster himself, . The FERALIGATR's impressive swimming form earned applause from the Lilycove Leader's section of the gallery, his fans chanting Pepper's name as the trio dove out of sight.[break][break]

Prompt: A SANDY ISLET split the course in two after emerging from the tunnel, the cross-current pushing those in the front half of the field toward the right side. It may have been a blessing in disguise; those protected from the current by racers in front of them would find themselves on the left side of the fork, which was more straight. They would be able to regain their stamina or even just give themselves and their Pokémon a breather. While it would be against the current, it would be less stressful than also trying to navigate the meandering path on the other side![break][break]

That early lead vanished as soon as it started, immediately getting caught in the rough surf left by 's Wailord. He wasn't the only one, as two others got caught in it as well. But once that thing was out of the way, Raju and his Golisipod got going. Things were still pretty close here, with , and his little Froakie,  in front of him and and her Blastoise behind him. And neither by too much. The blonde doubted that Blastoise could be knocked off course too much by his own wake. So instead he focused on trying to pass the Froakie.

After exiting the tunnel, they immediatly got split off. Cian was forced to the left, as was he and likely the rest of the back half. It looked like it was a straight shot through. Raju hoped Samurai could really cut loose and pass Cian. But the power of the Sygna Suit may forbid him from doing so. Training will tell...that was for sure.

TLDR

Got caught in the wake of 's Wailord. Stopping him from going too fast.
Gets through the tunnel, gets caught going to the left.
Tries to really cut loose and go full speed ahead to pass

ninth place is abysmal for the vct champion but everyone loves a good underdog story, so it only makes sense for him to start out from the back. he's sure the underdog mechanic will help him later on, anyway, so it may not be the worst idea to hang back.[break][break]

he does envy the people who got the option to go for the safer side of the course. it was easier to navigate after all.

still, there's no point in complaining when his wailord's the reason why it happened.

"alright, steady now."

the wailord manages to swim through the course, watching a few pass by and a few fall behind. everything was inconsequential at the start, where everyone else, including him, was still trying to get a feel for the course.

Forced onto the right side of the fork by sheer momentum, Gwyar and Galatine found themselves staring down a winding path— one that, realistically, would not represent near as much of a problem to them as most.

Not in the maneuvering sense, at least.

It shone brightly in his grasp as he pointed it at his Aegislash, shooting a ray of brilliant light at the blade. Briefly, a blinding flash overtook the racers' silhouette— before Galatine's new, sleek and crystalline form was revealed.

A massive crystal axe had somehow found itself wedged directly down the flat of the Aegislash...

Turning Gwyar's surf-sword into a wind-surfing sword.

"LET'S GO!"

Robin tugged on Carracosta's shell to have him lean back as so many people charged in front. She didn't want to risk getting hit and getting knocked off. She had practiced riding with several higher ranking Rangers, but she still wasn't a pro. Riding on the water was an area she was minimally experienced with, as she tended to avoid the ocean altogether these days. Still, she trusted Carracosta to take good care of her.

"Let's do what we can with this current," she assured as they pursued the path. There were quite a few pokemon ahead of the duo, but Robin knew anyone in first place could get knocked into last. Races were unpredictable, so she was far from discouraged.

Josh was a professional in his field. Racing was his element. Out of the three modes of Pokémon transportation approved by the Hoenn Racing League, water was easily his weakest. He and his Sharpedo still had great fundamentals, split-second reaction time letting him zip past most of the rest of the field. "Eat my dust, Davey!" he taunted and Marina as Snacker opened his mouth wide, taking in as much sea water as possible to use as propellant via a high-pressure valve just inside his rear. While he couldn't utilize his mount's true turbo until after the first time around the course, it may have been for the best.

As Josh surfaced, he passed and stuck his tongue out at him, though he doubted his friend could see the act through his helmet visor. The Gym Leader leaned hard into the current in an effort to head to the right fork, which was much straighter and well suited to the shark's strengths. Even with the Pokémon's left fin exposed, the current was simply too strong, washing him toward more challenging curves that forced him to slow the massively fast predator down. "I'm coming for you, !" he cried as he tightened his hold on Snacker's steering fin. ready to make a move once they were in open water.

As the Basculegion shook him, Thomas shook his head. Perhaps all that had been going on prior to this had distracted Thomas. "Thanks, Ermac. I'll be more careful.", he told the Basculegion.

Thomas watched as passed him. Despite this, the man didn't let it get to him.

As the duo emerged from the tunnel, they'd find themselves on the meandering right side.

"Let's keep our cool here!", he told the Basculegion, more worried about staying in the race, than getting first, especially this early on.

Not that Ermac needed the reminder.

He was more than a little surprised to see that most everyone was either slightly close to or just behind him; however as the current leader of the pack he felt the current in the water before the Mantine did—and much as she flapped her flippers they were forced on the right side of the path—

Curse these underwater currents.

Riding low on his Mantine’s back, he would adjust his position ever so slightly so he was still slicing through the wind without too much trouble.

“Not yet, Ri… not yet,” he would hiss quietly; because he could tell the Mantine was already itching to speed up!

“We haven’t finished one lap yet, you know how this goes!”

Elise and her slender blue dragon were very last in the race while was first. Since there were so many other racers in the water, this made for a harder way to see whether Elise can change her placing. Her Dragonair appeared to be struggling to get her speed up during the round that the dragon type had gone so behind from the faster racers and their Pokemon.[break][break]

And now, the racers were forced into two paths in a Sandy Islet when Elise and her Dragonair emerge from the tunnel. Bavsargra tries her best to make sure that they’ll get in a different placing than their last one. Eyes from the dragon watch the other orange-haired ranger woman and her Vaporeon in the water. [break][break]

Across the water, the snake-like body of the female Dragonair attempts to use her natural speed without using her boosting move to get into a better arrangement in the race. [break][break]

That's fortunate, at least! Genny's slow, methodical moves did lead her to right next to in the running. But this doesn't have to be a bad thing at all. No, quite the contrary. She's more confident now. While Uzi was doing just fine, all this race is is a means of pacing oneself.[break][break]

A moment of reprieve. The straight and narrow would allow Uzi some time to relax. Genny takes a second to breathe, pets Uzi to do the same. They had to save all of their energy for the right moment. So Genny hugs on Uzi, and whispers.[break][break]

"Take it slow, Uzi."[break][break]

He does so, making sure not to go too far ahead.[break][break]

Seeing Elise from behind, Genny tries her best to make her feel just a bit better.[break][break]

"We're not out of the race yet, Elise!" she calls out! Elise would have the ability to turn it around! So would Genny![break][break]
