One would be wondering—where was he, anyway?

Well, he was busy making sure that his Mantine, Ri, was already prepared to go out there—having come in for a last-minute adjustment… of course he wasn’t telling anyone what the adjustment was. They’d have to wait and see for themselves what it was.

For now, though—

He was busy applying as much sunblock as he could all over his exposed legs, himself, his arms; hell even his nose had a liberal layer of sunblock on it because when was the last time he’d come out here to surf?!

(Yes, he was determined to show everyone that Mantine Surfing wasn’t just something to be terrified of!)

“Surprised, aren’t you, Ri?” he hummed quietly as he squirted out the last of the sunblock and liberally lathered it all over his bare top (with some difficulty reaching his back, but it was there all the same too).

“I know you’ve been itching—no, dying to be out on the waves again. Well, here we are. I kept my promise, didn’t I? Don’t let me down now,” he would chuckle quietly afterward.

The first match against Josh Devlin ended in a thrashing defeat. It was unfortunate, but even when offered the Gym Badge from the man himself, she said no. She didn't want to be given something she didn't fully earn. But today, the Silph Cup? She'd make a better showing for herself. Uzi was ready too, this time, a pair of goggles accessorized on his head.[break][break]

Genny donned her swimsuit, more representative of Alola, and readied up. The competition looked fierce today. Between the numerous cute and fierce Water Types, and the people who would have them win the cup, Genny feels all the more pressure.[break][break]

But today, she'd make a better showing than her previous. With Uzi, ruffling his fins, she smiles, and kisses his head again. lam logan, Thomas Benoit, Eris Halla, Michael Navidson, Elise Calcifet, and Eva Morales, all of them were in this race. Even kyle lopez and CIAN MAHER were joining the fun. This would be one heck of a race, that certain.[break][break]

Waving to the competition of friends, rivals, and mentors she's looked up to, she grins. "Good luck out there!"[break][break]

THE GREEN FLAG DROPS!

PACIFIDLOG'S FLOATING STANDS SHOOK from the crowd's roar, seeing CIAN MAHER and Eris Halla grab onto their FROAKIE and WOOPER. Though they were small, through the power of their trainers' SYGNA SUITS, they could tow the two as quickly as any of the larger Pokémon present could. There were doubters in the field, such as Thomas Benoit , but he would do well not to underestimate the bond between trainer and Pokémon reaching its apex.[break][break]

THE NOISE may have made it difficult for the racers to talk amongst themselves while waiting for officials to get into position and wave the green flag. Leilani Kalawai'a and her BLASTOISE seemed fearless, floating between Josh Devlin and Tempest Quinn and their two SHARPEDO on the starting grid. [break][break]

THE FIELD WAS THE MOST COMPETITIVE IN SILPH CUP HISTORY: there were more Quick Badge holders there than ever. Raju Mystic and Elise Calcifet , while not in possession of the Badge, had arguably more experience than most of the field by virtue of working at Mauville Gym. Michael Navidson had little to worry about; with KYOGRE last seen on the far opposite side of Hoenn's shores and the League keeping close tabs on the leviathan's whereabouts, they would have canceled the race if the sea god was nearby. And in the unlikely event of an attack, they had kyle lopez and his WAILORD to serve as a platform for Hoenn's finest trainers to mount a counterattack. [break][break]

THE PEACEMAKER AND PROFESSOR, Eva Morales , snapped some photos to remember the event by, making small talk (and perhaps even a modicum of trash talk) with Gwyar Wledig , the newly-minted Gym Leader making sure his stance on his AEGISLASH's hilt and guard was firm. He wasn't the only surfer in the field; Alolan favorite Jack Napier and his MANTINE would be quite the challenge for them to overcome. Sunscreen dripped down the large-finned water-type's back and toward the confident Genevieve Cromwell 's VAPOREON; perhaps he'd applied too much?[break][break]

THE RACERS' ATTENTION was glued to the display above the starting arch. They would get two warnings of when to spur their Pokémon forward: several horn-like sounds from the arch's speakers, and from FERNANDO SILPH himself. The executive's voice burst across the loudspeakers, "Battle routine set!", as though they were at Slateport City Gym.[break][break]

A LOUD SQUAWK may have startled lam logan and others not ready for it, ensuring racers were ready ten seconds before the race was to start. Three images of an artist's depiction of the Beast of Winds, Suicune, appeared on the arch's display, overlaying an orange "GET READY" prompt. Another squawk at T minus three seconds as the third image from the left began to fade. Another at T minus two as the middle image faded. A third as the final one faded. A higher-pitched squawk nearly drowned out the Silph CEO's cry, "Execute!" as the final image faded, the MC waving the green flag and the prompt changing to "GO".[break][break]

WITH A DEAFENING CACOPHONY of splashing and a wall of white water, the sixteen competitors battled for early position.[break][break]

Prompt: With the current at the racers' backs, conditions are ideal for Pokémon to get up to speed. Those that have particularly strong acceleration might even be able to exceed their normal top speeds as they bounce over the waves in Mauville City's direction. It is not until the first gentle turns around a series of sandbars that the course truly tests the field. Two rows of anchor-tethered buoys mark the wide bounds racers are required to stay between. As wide as the lane is, the competition would need all the room they could get. Steering through a rapidly-moving current while making a long, sweeping right turn from south to east would prove to be a challenge, particularly when they had to briefly dive to go through a short, submerged tunnel at the end![break][break]

Nobody bothered the silent, serious sam of a trainer/bodyguard/gang member/host/gym trainer. He noticed the sygna suits on the little girl and a guy, both using smaller Pokemon. If Shalin Nariya's was any indication of what they could do, they weren't to be underestimated. Not that he had any intention of winning. Of course, he was going to try his best, but this was more for practice than anything for Samurai, since they never raced before. The region top champion used a Wailord of all Pokemon...even if minimized, it was still huge. Beyond those two odd choices, there was also an Aegislash. On the surface, he could see using the Pokemon as a surfboard. But the underwater sections? That could be difficult for the trainer.

Soon, the warning came to the racers to be ready. Latching himself onto the special saddle for the Golosipod, Raju was ready for the dive. Samurai likewise cracked her claws and was ready as well. With the announcment, off they went! As soon as they dove in, Raju was surprised that the current was at their backs...good thing Samurai was quite fast, and had the reaction time to deal with obstacles. The buggy swordsPokemon swam with her powerful legs and main claws, easily brute forcing their way through the waves, hoping for an early lead.

He knelt atop Galatine, hand resting atop her blade as he shifted his feet for balance.

"How are you feeling?" He asked, receiving a prompt hum in response. "Good."

Though this wouldn't be their first going 'sword-surfing' together, it would be the first time they deliberately set out to do so. Though they had practiced in preparation for the race, it still would be the longest they ever surfed....

"Then we're both having fun." He said, smile growing razor sharp as FERNANDO SILPH 's voice boomed across the starting line.

“Mmm, we’ll see if you can add a Silph Cup to that list,” he calls back to CIAN MAHER with a voice loaded in playful skepticism, even if he knows full well that Ribbit is more of an asset than his tiny size makes him out to be. He remembers full well how much of a punch the lil guy can pack from VCT. But he also remembers being a comeback kid and managing to take the froakie out on the second go round. So as far as Lam’s concerned, the playing field is even for this round of friendly competition. “Won’t even know what hit ya, Lord Maher!”[break][break]

A laugh follows as they paddle past to take their position at the pole. “You ready to roll, Pep?” he pats the feraligatr’s scaly, seafoam green back as she gives garbled bellow, not fully lifting her head from the water. Bubbles stream up to the surface from between her teeth. A bright blue ridge of spikes is all that pokes free from the water as she dunks her head completely for moment, eyes blinking in adjustment to the salty water.[break][break]

“Yeah, sounds good,” he agrees with the rumbled sound cheerfully, noting the tension that ripples through her when she resurfaces to hear the countdown. Like a spring loaded trigger, ready to snap. Turning, he looks up into the crowd for any sign of where Ikarus Rook managed to seat himself, but to no avail. Lam tucks himself into place on Pepper’s back after pulling his goggles down over his face.[break][break]

In good timing too, as she hurtles forward at the GO and he’s swiftly smacked in the face with the kickback of a saltwater spray. Sturdy legs cut through the current, and they rocket into the race as lets out a thrilled whoop from the rush that comes from the burst of speed as she took the turns at a wide berth.[break][break]

Then he braces himself for the full chill, sucking in a breath as she dunks them both to shoot through the tunnel.

“Man,” he laughs at CIAN MAHER, “you’re crazy.” The words are spoken with admiration. Crazy people, he has decided, are his people. “Makes me wish Hattori was here.” Eyes glance up at the stands, where he sees the frog spectating from the top of the commentator’s booth.[break][break]
“Alright then. Let’s race.” Gripping on his reins, he looks at the path ahead. A straight run down smooth waters, what more could he ask for? It’s ideal conditions for Leviathan, a path that plays to his strengths as a racer.[break][break]
Just gotta take advantage of it while I can.[break][break]
Above, the countdown begins. Leviathan starts pulling water inward. Even if he’s one of the slower competitors, he’s going to launch like a missile.[break][break]
“Yo, Lopez! How’s the view from up there!” Right as he shouts that to kyle lopez, the green flag gets waved.[break][break]
And, they’re off. Off across azure waves. Sixteen people of vastly different backgrounds, all united in this contest of speed. Much as he wants to win, Navy enjoys the ride more than anything.[break][break]
“Yahoooooo!” He shouts, forgetting the dignity expected of an Elite Four. He feels like a younger man again, leaning against his Pokemon, eyes focused on the track ahead. Leviathan skips across the water’s surface like a stone. As they near the tunnel, he quickly inhales water.[break][break]
Leviathan pulls them down with a whirlpool, launching man and mon through the tunnel.

Whoa, people were off to the races with a crazy start. Robin patted Carracosta's head as he started moving. "Don't rush, Carra," she urged. "We'll get 'em later in the race. Let them fight it out in the beginning." She figured people would rush for first place immediately. Those folks could tangle and hopefully keep each other down long enough that she could pass them.

As it was, Carracosta moved faster than she expected. She was content to hold on and let him lead. "Yahoo! We got this!" Adrenaline coursed through her as she took in the excitement of the race.

Much as he wanted to go fast right as the starting noise went off, he knew that he would have to bide his time… even if it was a major pain in the ass.

“C’mon, Ri, let’s show ‘em what we’re made of!” he would snicker quietly as he slid into position and off they went!

The starting part of a race would always be the most complicated to weave through; considering everyone was trying to gain distance and the beginnings of the front, the middle and the back of the pack would form.

He idly wondered how the rider who had an Aegislash and—and Mister Froakie would deal with having to go underwater!

“Don’t overshoot, now!” he would cheer his Mantine on, leaning into the wind and going with the flow. He was even feeling a little daring, so he’d dip his hand into the surf before realizing one part of the track suddenly appeared to be underwater!

“And that’s why… I have these!” he would chirp as he quickly pulled something out from his shorts pocket—a pair of plugs for the nose—the ones used by synchronized swimming teams in their artistic underwater routines for when they had to stay underwater for as long as they could.

Slipping the plug on as quickly as possible before the Mantine would dive, he would leap into the air at the exact same moment Ri the Mantine would sink lower into the waves—

He would hit the water in a jackknife dive before hanging onto one of the Mantine’s flippers as they made their way through the first underwater obstacle!

Hopefully they’d be able to come out of this without falling too far behind…

Tempest was pulled out of his own bubble of pampering his shark when Josh Devlin approached. He gave the other a grin and nodded.[break][break]

"Wouldn't have missed it! Gotta rep my hometown. Marina's been eager to let loose again, too!" The large Sharpedo grumbled lightly at Snacker's antics but didn't rise to his bait. She wasn't going to wear herself out before the actual race started![break][break]

But, soon it was time, so Temp gave one last nod to Josh before he slung his leg over Marina's back and onto his saddle. He leaned in and gripped it right, tense and eager.[break][break]

Three... two... one... go![break][break]

Marina shot out of the gate like a cannon. Tempest laughed and hooted, grinning as his pokemon tried to reach top speed. A lot of the other competitors stuck surprisingly close; some of them even shooting ahead! But that was alright, because Temp was in this for the long haul.[break][break]

The first obstacle came up, and Tempest gave Marina a pat in preparation to try and stay between them- thankfully his Sygna Suit would keep him covered for the underwater part,

When the green light starts for the racers of the aquatic race, the ambassador directs her Dragonair to swim across the water. Like an elegant serpent, the blue dragon type Pokemon slithers across the water like she’s giving it her best. Along with the other gym trainer working at Josh’s gym, Elise and the other young man were among the top performers of Josh’s gym even if they didn’t win his gym badge yet. The others were doing a little well and Elise would want to make sure that she represented the Mauville gym too.[break][break]

The first obstacle is some gentle turns. Bavsargra is directed to take those gentle turns as the Dragonair comes across some buoys and the rapidly moving current. Sliding around the buoys, the blue dragon type Pokemon goes into the test of withstanding the current. Bavsargra’s endurance begins to test the dragon when she’ll try to weather the current with keeping up with her own speed. [break][break]

With a loud pop from Snacker forcing a high-pressure expulsion of water through his rear, briefly popping Josh out of the saddle, the racers were off. Surf flew all over his gear, fiercely fighting Tempest Quinn , Leilani Kalawai'a , Eva Morales , and Elise Calcifet for early position. There may have even been some incidental contact between the two sharks' fins as they tried to get a clean lead on one another. The course widened to give Josh and his bouncing Sharpedo more room to maneuver, where he could focus not on the other racers, but on the course itself. He had to be mindful of them, but it was more important to him maintaining good form and, in a sense, acting like they didn't exist. Just Josh and Snacker against the clock.

That concentration would be disrupted when the strong current hit, making him turn slightly harder than he wanted to. He shifted his weight hard to the right, then to the left as the course demanded. Every time he seemed to have clear vision, water splashed into the Gym Leader's visor, making him focus extra hard to see his surroundings. "Dive, Snacker!" Pushing on the Pokémon's steering fin, the two dove beneath the waves, feeling them be yanked to one direction as the cross-current vanished once they were in the short tunnel. He had to be ready to be slammed the other way once they were in open ocean again, though! The rough waters between Mauville and Pacifidlog were no joke!

Seeing everyone so excited for the races proper, has Genny fired up and ready to go herself! She may not be expecting a high position, but she's hoping for one! With any luck, as the racing arch begins its countdown, Genny takes a moment to take a breath.[break][break]

Uzi may not be the fastest here on the field, but he is good as he is. the Vaporeon slapping his tail and racing off with Genny on his back, attached to him with a harness. Slow and steady, analyzing each opportunity to gauge the competition, the first lap would be much the same; get used to the track.[break][break]

With the row of anchor buoys on the field, the competition would mean the duo have to swim opposite to everyone, but delving under from the start, and holding her breath, Genny can see the tunnel ahead of time. This time, with a grab of her Vaporeon, she issues the Eeveelution to try something; AQUA RING. That would show Uzi how much space they have to work with. And hopefully, they had enough.[break][break]
