The game of chicken between Snacker and Marina ended almost as badly as it could have for the Master of Faster; fin contact between the two Sharpedo caused Josh to flinch and give Tempest Quinn a scowl before destabilizing. He frantically tried to steer the Pokémon back on course before several Pokémon zipped by him. By the time he had regained control, he was in the back half of the field. He flashed an apologetic look toward Raju Mystic before deeply inhaling and submerging beneath the waves.

An impulse went through the young man's mind as he found himself trailing significantly, his MEGA GLOVE's Key Stone thrumming as he battled his coworker through the narrow tunnel. Right at its end, the course took a sudden rise, forcing the Gym Leader to yank backward and downward on the steering fin. He followed his coworker, splashing out of the submerged area and catching air. "Yeehaw!" he whooped as the Sharpedo went sailing over a palm-lined sandbar. He would have to bring Snacker back here when it wasn't race time - this was fun!

Even with all the finesse, Genny finds herself unable to advance. Despite a masterful set of leaps on the open water, and the crowd going wild, it made little difference in placement; she was still 14th. It even seemed like the Sheriff was going faster than Genny could hope to catch-up. But if there weren't bad, everyone had brought their A-game.[break][break]

It was just a little disheartening. Everyone was doing spectactularly, and Genny's face still showed hope, and plenty of it. As the course buoys her beneath the surface, she holds her breath, and rides through the tunnel. As it tightens and constricts her and Uzi, she clings closer to her little Vaporeon, before riding the wave out between double row of palm trees.[break][break]

By time Genny realizes it, her eyes see what they have to do. "Mid-air Flip Turn! Spiral above, and corkscrew to the right angle, Uzi!" she orders. It's a barrel roll, but Genny is ready to be whipped around, tightening the harness. Then comes the spin.[break][break]

If Genny's learned anything from Josh Devlin 's Gym Challenge? Wait for the right time.[break][break]

So there was a dive coming up, and for a few moments he thought the guy on the Aegislash surfboard was looking close—

Whoa, wait a second, hold up, they were literally way too close towards each other!

“Ri, Ri, back off a little, now!” he would hiss as he crouched down even further, getting ready for the dive coming up and taking the deepest breath he could manage before they slipped underwater, following the ‘jet stream’ of water that was being left behind in their wake.

Eventually, they would see that the underwater part suddenly came to an abrupt stop and force everyone to temporarily go airborne; mentally crossing his fingers as his head broke through the waves, he then let the Mantine fly up first, who seemed to easily clear the trees—

As for him, though?!

He hoped that the force that propelled him into the air was high enough for him to make a somersault landing on the back of said Mantine that was flapping her fins as she flew through the air and—

This was going to get messy, wasn’t it?!

Hopefully they would stick the landing!

In spite of boosting her speed with her move, the ambassador is still a little last. Her dragon duels with her fellow ranger’s and the sheriff’s for the other spots, but the Vaporeon from Genny comes on top. Now, the next course would be ahead of them as Elise directs her serpentine dragon in going through the tunnel that starts out wide, but gets narrower. All of the other racers who were ahead were putting on their boosting too and while Elise hasn’t had Josh’s badge yet, she’d want to show Mauville gym that she’s still their top student.[break][break]

With a boost in speed, the blue dragon attempts to make her way through the tunnel. Bavsargra’s lithe, slender body comes through the tunnel and ends up on the landing zone between the palm trees and the waters. The Dragonair quickly tries to use her reaction time to get back to the Corsola reef afterward![break][break]

A LEAP OF FAITH

BEFORE THE COMPETITION was the reason racers had been warned to come geared for both surface and underwater environments. The sun was at the perfect angle to make the leap over the tiny island almost completely blind on the way up: a true test of trust in their Pokémon.[break][break]

WHILE FLYING WAS NOT PERMITTED, as much as Elise Calcifet may have wished it could be to allow her a chance to catch up, some Pokémon had a talent for gliding. Jack Napier 's MANTINE and Gwyar Wledig 's AEGISLASH catapulted out of the underwater passage surrounded by roaring water. The gallery started chanting the Alolan's name as he leaped from the ray's back in a vertical 360, nailing the landing and rocking lam logan 's FERALIGATR with quite the wake as they challenged him for first place. The Galarian knight's angle was a bit too high; though he had more than enough distance to land back in the water, he had shed a lot of speed doing so. Eris Halla would not let that mistake go unpunished, her WOOPER's expertly-timed MAGIKARP SPLASH letting the wondrous child slip past both the steel-type and Tempest Quinn 's SHARPEDO just before landing.[break][break]

DESPITE CIAN MAHER 's ORDERS TO HOLD BACK, the Obstacle before them was, in its most basic form, a jump. High leaps were a specialty of FROAKIE, making it challenging for the amphibian to hold back. Enhanced by INFINITY ENERGY, the thrust of its leap stretched and grew the limits of their bond. The two whizzed past robin coello and her CARRACOSTA in an impressive blur, closing the gap to his fellow SYGNA SUIT wielder in a hurry. Several large SPLASHES rocked the ancient turtle as Leilani Kalawai'a , kyle lopez , and Josh Devlin all landed around her in a four-way battle for seventh place.[break][break]

EVEN AMONG THE BACK OF THE FIELD, the competition was unrelenting. The underwater tunnel became crowded as Raju Mystic was the first to make a move on Thomas Benoit 's BASCULEGION. The GOLISOPOD had to be careful not to get caught on the larger Pokémon's long tail while making his passing attempt. It was a valiant effort that came up just short, the ghost-type widening the gap with its more aerodynamic body as they both sailed between the rows of palms.[break][break]

THE BROADCAST PANNED TO Genevieve Cromwell , her VAPOREON whipping her tail vigorously back and forth to prepare for a dramatic FLIP TURN. Rolling through the skies like a soaring Latios, the Eeveelution launched herself and her trainer above the small island, landing in sync with Michael Navidson 's KINGDRA. The duo were front-row witnesses to Elise Calcifet 's DRAGONAIR skillfully leaping past them, the serpent perhaps more adept at sea-to-sky transitions than any other common Pokémon. Too good, even; without the ability to fly, the royal's Pokémon could not slam on the water brakes in time to avoid getting caught in the reef. The dragon's tough scales protected it from harm, but the result was catastrophic, causing an almost complete loss of speed. After freeing herself, the Elite Four and Elite Ranger were barely in sight. On the bright side, she would have the course all to herself during her efforts to catch up![break][break]

THE SECOND LAP'S HOME STRETCH quickly came upon the competition, the current working with them for a change. How would they handle it propelling them to potentially uncontrollable speeds in its narrowing corridors?

Prompt: The course's home stretch is long, straight and with the current, letting Pokémon reach incredible speeds well beyond their normal capabilities. It is not without dangers, though; it gradually narrows over time, accommodating only one Pokémon at its most slim point. Pokémon looking for passing opportunities will need to react quickly to both traffic and the tightening confines![break][break]

"No!" She ducked as a Froakie hopped past her at wicked speeds. She recovered slowly, barely getting to see the blur that was CIAN MAHER has he passed her. The infinity energy was absolutely giving an advantage. Though, Robin was determined not to regret her decision to bring a regular schmegular pokemon.

She patted Carracosta's head as he tried to keep pace. "It's ok, big guy. We're still doing good. They'll all make mistakes up here, bet." Her slow and steady philosophy had kept her in good placing. She had gotten to fifth and held it for a while, so she was confident they could recover and redeem themselves. She looked at Leilani Kalawai'a right ahead of her; if she could pass this gal, she would be a little closer to first for the finish line...

Nothing was working! The Basculegion was staying just ahead, and was even increasing the distance between them. With a heavy sigh, he just had Samurai to keep up the pace. Maybe an opportunity would present itself. But everyone here was more experienced than he was. All they had was some childhood bullshit and pure instinct. If there was a time that that wasn't going to cut it, at least it was during a friendly race and not in the throws of his gang activity. If nothing else, he was a fighter. Even witht he Kingdra nipping at his heels, they plowed on. The track narrowed on ahead...encouraging the Golisipod to move faster so that at the bare minimum they didn't lose their position. If they could pass the Basculegion, great. But if not, he'd just try not to finish in last place.

tldr
Doesn't pass Thomas Benoit, but tries to close the distance in the straightway. Maybe passing? Doubtful.
At least tries to maintain position and stay in front of Michael Navidson.

As they barreled around obstacles, Tempest found himself being passed. Damn! But, no use in despairing... soon he and Marina would show them the boost that they had planned for! Then, everyone in front of them would see![break][break]

... At least, that's what Tempest hoped. He wondered if he would just do his boost now. But... then again, the obstacles and waves looked choppy up ahead.[break][break]

Yeah, it would be best to save it and just hope he didn't hit anyone as they all clumped together.

if he counts right, he should still be at the middle of the race.

he peeks through his view to see what lies ahead in an attempt to count heads, but what welcomes him is the treacherous next segment of the race. any attempt to keep his position was now taken over by the need to survive.

for now, at least, he thinks of pushing forward just to make sure he doesn't collide with other racers.

"go fast," he tells his wailord. "we don't want to get caught in traffic."

the pokemon hears his trainer's call and makes an effort to push for the next place. kyle surmises that it would have done the same even if he had not instructed it to do so.

Josh and Snacker briefly submerged upon landing from the leap, their form sublime. The shark's mouth was wide open, trying to force as much water through him as possible to keep his speed up. After sea water washed over his helmet, he was rocked by turbulence that tossed him to one side of his seat, one of the fingers of his Z-GLOVE tearing from rubbing against the Sharpedo's rough skin. It was a reminder that, no matter how tame one was, riding a Sharpedo came with risks.

As the veil of water covering his helmet completely dried out from the effective wind tunnel his speed put him inside, quarters slowly began to get more cramped. He desperately wanted to save his Pokémon's Mega Evolution for the final lap, where it would be most effective. The urge to fire it early rose as none of the racers seemed to give an inch. After a long game of chicken, with his mount's side fins about to slice into kyle lopez's WAILORD, he yielded, pulling back on the steering fin and allowing the trio to narrowly pass him. The last lap, though, they were going to floor it.

If there was one thing Sharpedo didn't have, it was a horn.

Despite his best efforts, Thomas found himself still in the same place he was before. Trailing right behind Josh Devlin, with Raju Mystic on his tail. And with the next obstacle promising to be a bottleneck, Thomas had to be careful, if he didn't want to crash, and fall further behind.

Though the temptation to boost was there, Thomas relented from doing so. After all, that'd only make him more prone to crash into another racer. Instead, Thomas simply focused on attempting to get through the obstacle in one piece.

There was always a more appropriate time and place for a boost.

He was not expecting to stick the landing—and actually become a viable threat for the Feraligatr that was currently at the head of the pack!

“Nice one, Ri,” he would whisper quietly as he briefly touched the back of her head and leaned into the tailwind from the other Water-type; they were already ruminating when to start the next plan of their operation—they were so close, and yet so far!

The next part of the path they were traversing seemingly looked wide—however, at some point it suddenly started to narrow down…

And from the looks of things, the way that the pack would inevitably start crowding altogether…

“Keep it in, we’re not there yet, I’ll let you know when we drop the surprise, okay?! Just hang on!” he would urge the Mantine on; leaning as best as he could towards the wind—for if he was to prove how Mantine Surfers really did things; then it would have to be through this upcoming acid test!
