RACE DAY

A CAPACITY CROWD ROARED louder than the crashing waves churned by south-central Hoenn's violent rip currents. Thousands of fans spared no expense to make it to the remote PACIFIDLOG TOWN, the humble hamlet's docks pushed to their limits with the human traffic they received for the biggest sporting event in Hoenn: the opening race for the SILPH CUP. Sponsored by FERNANDO SILPH 's SILPH CO, advertising for the multi-billion PD company was plastered all over the floating town.[break][break]

ALL EYES WERE ON CIAN MAHER and his FROAKIE, murmurs abounding on how he would ride on such a small Pokémon. With a SYGNA SUIT, the possibilities were limitless. Although he could not contend with lam logan 's FERALIGATR, the amphibian's tremendous muscle power letting it beautifully battle the currents during the TIME TRIALS, the small Pokémon's performance was arguably more impressive. The weather was perfect, the southern seas warm almost year-round despite KYUREM's continued influence on Hoenn. [break][break]

PLATINUM CLASS RACERS RAY BROOKS AND JODY SUMMERS would be calling the action from the skybox, their dulcet voices broadcast to televisions and streaming devices all around the globe. Even as distant as HAU'OLI CITY and NIMBASA CITY, sports bars were filled with racing fans watching the race on the cable channel PSPN, the Hoenn League's official competition channels, and in the case of the CHECKERED FLAG in MAUVILLE CITY, Josh Devlin 's ChuTube channel. Thanks to the global growth of Pokémon racing and the merger of Hoenn's Pokémon Racing Federation with Paldea's Cyclizar Racing League, worldwide viewership was in the millions.[break][break]

THE TIME TO THE START OF THE RACE was fast approaching. The Master of Ceremonies took the microphone to welcome the gallery to the rough waters of PACIFIDLOG TOWN and introduce the event's other sponsors, including oscar clayton 's GMH and jayden cross 's WYNDON PHARMACEUTICALS. Technical support was provided by ameena abadi 's ABCON. Afterward, he explained the rules of the competition and called all sixteen teams to the town's main docks, where they would be introduced. After their names were called, they would be expected to line up in their positions on the four-row, four-column starting grid. Despite dozens of entrants from across the globe, all sixteen of the qualifying racers were residents of Hoenn.[break][break]

"Qualifying in sixteenth place, from Freezington, Galar, give a warm welcome to Hoenn's newest Gym Leader, Gwyar Wledig and Galatine, his Aegislash!" The gallery was mesmerized at how he rode atop the giant sword. While an odd choice for an aquatic race, no one would be right to underestimate what the knight could do with a steel Pokémon.[break][break]

"Qualifying in fifteenth place, from Goldenrod, Johto, your Vital City Tournament runner-up, Mauville's Gym Leader, and the Master of Faster, Josh Devlin and Snacker, his Sharpedo!" Raucous cheering came from a particular corner of the gallery where many of his familiar faces were located.[break][break]

"Qualifying in fourteenth place, from Konikoni, Alola, Leilani Kalawai'a and Koa, her Blastoise!" Crowds watching from sports bars in Hau'oli City were almost certainly cheering for her.[break][break]

"Qualifying in thirteenth place, from Pacifidlog, Hoenn, please welcome DAVEY JONES and Marina, their Sharpedo!" The legion of excited fans roared for the dark horse to win the race.[break][break]

"Qualifying in twelfth place, from Pallet, Kanto, your 2022 Drift Waterway champion, give it up for Dr. Eva Morales and Torpedo, her Barraskewda!" The crowd reaction was the loudest yet; while the bookies didn't seem to agree she would perform well, she was also a crowd favorite for her outgoing personality.[break][break]

"Qualifying in eleventh place, from Hammerlocke, Galar, let's hear it for your Galarian Ambassador, Elise Calcifet and Bavsargra, her Dragonair!" The Mauville Gym section of the gallery whistled loudly, wanting to see one of their top employees perform well.[break][break]

"Qualifying in tenth place, from Dewford, Hoenn, robin coello and her Carracosta!" Surely, she was getting encouragement from the island town's fans back home despite the lukewarm reception on site.[break][break]

"Qualifying in ninth place, from Verdanturf, Hoenn, her very own Top Champion and 2023 Fortree Ordeal runner-up, kyle lopez and his Wailord!" To make navigating the obstacles feasible with such a large Pokémon, a MINIMIZE effect had been applied to the floating whale Pokémon, though their size was still great. It could serve as both an asset and a liability.[break][break]

"Qualifying in eighth place, from Vermilion, Kanto, Eris Halla and Pips, her Wooper!" The crowd's eyes shifted to the SYGNA SUIT wearer, equally curious as to how she would travel through current-ravaged waters with such a small Pokémon.[break][break]

"Qualifying in seventh place, from Slateport, Hoenn, let's hear it for your very own Elite Four and Dewford Gym Leader, Michael Navidson and Leviathan, his Kingdra!" The crowd began chanting his name, ready to see his indomitable spirit in action.[break][break]

"Qualifying in sixth place, from Castelia, Unova, let's give a round of applause for Raju Mystic and Samurai, his Golisopod!" The Mauville Gym Trainer received an equally warm welcome as Elise Calcifet and Josh Devlin , three of the speed Gym's best trainers present.[break][break]

"Qualifying in fifth place, from Hau'oil, Alola, let's hear it for Genevieve Cromwell and Jacuzzi, her Vaporeon!" If there was anyone that was an Alolan favorite, it was her. A recent challenger to Mauville Gym, the Ranger could not be underestimated. What she had learned in her loss to Josh Devlin would be put to the test today.[break][break]

"Qualifying in fourth place, from Rustboro, Hoenn, your Vital City Tournament champion, Hoenn's hotshot, and Rustboro's Gym Leader, I wanna hear you scream for CIAN MAHER and Ribbit, his Froakie!" The vibrations from the whistling and clapping of thousands of fans rocked the arena from the introduction of yet another crowd favorite.[break][break]

"Qualifying in third place, from Malie, Alola, give it up for a wonderful Time Trial performance from professional Mantine Surfer Jack Napier and Ri, his Mantine!" The applause was perhaps more than the lorekeeper was used to receiving.[break][break]

"Qualifying in second place, from Shalour, Kalos, please welcome former Elite Four Thomas Benoit and Ermac, his Basculegion!" As the Hisuian Pokémon had only been introduced into races recently, fans were excited to see what the large, swimming ghost-type could do.[break][break]

"And qualifying on the pole, from Hau'oli, Alola, Lilycove's Gym Leader and the Tag Team master, make it loud for lam logan and his Feraligatr, Pepper!!" The deluge of spectators filled the sleepy town with noise levels its fishers were almost certainly not used to.[break][break]

Once everyone had lined up, the MC continued, "And now, FERNANDO SILPH will say the most famous words in all of Pokémon racing." The wealthiest man in all of Hoenn took the microphone and inhaled deeply, his booming voice amplified through the aviary's loudspeakers.[break][break]

"Ladies and gentlemen, mount your Pokémon!"[break][break]

Being her first official race ever, Robin was exhilarated. She was bouncing from foot to foot as she saw everyone pour in. There were lots of challengers, and she made it on the list as tenth. She wasn't sure how the place on the pole was assessed, but she was happy for lam logan . She hadn't seen him since they explored his city and captured a few pokemon; afterwards, he had gifted her a Carracosta, which was precisely who she was entering with.

So, naturally, she approached him to share as such. "Long time, no see! I hope you recognize this little guy." She gestured to the large sea turtle pokemon behind herself. Carracosta waved. "You're gonna be seeing his backside when we take first place," she teased good-naturedly. "We can't agree on a pose for the photos afterwards, though." Carracosta curled down low with his arms out like he was swimming. "I think we should be back to back instead. It'll be more intense, y'know?" The turtle pokemon groaned in disagreement.

This was Raju's first official race. He hadn't even done a race as a gym trainer yet. A couple of battles, but not a race. Not even enough time to teach Samurai Aqua Jet. But...this could still be fantastic practice. And who knows, maybe Samurai would learn something. Clad in only swim shorts, the blonde waved at the crowd somewhat shyly and broodingly. He wasn't a man of words, but of action. And he was a scrawny little shit...no one would tell from a glance that he was actually a pretty good fighter, let alone a member of a gang. Oh well, physique aside, he sat on top of Samurai in his spot.

Some contestants were visiting with each other, some ribbing and smack talk. Raju kept to himself though. His Golosipod stood menacingly with main claws/arms crossed coolly. He'd already gained some reputation for being one of the strongest Mauville Gym Trainers there, and had quite the welcoming committee. There was two others there as well, along with Josh himself. And a heck of an array of people and Pokemon. From Gym Leaders to the Top Champion himself...Raju was a tad intimidated...not that you could tell.

Tempest stood in his spot. When his name was announced, he raised a hand to the crowd. A few of the natives seemed a bit confused looking at him; but the ones in the know would recognize who he was. Davey Jones was just the identity he used to hide in plain sight.[break][break]

Marina chuffed at his side, already in the water and all geared up for the race. Tempest, too, was wearing his Sygna Suit. The sleek suit was paired with Marina. While not active just yet, it still thrummed with their bond.[break][break]

He gave her a few pats and small smiles to the other races around him, but mostly kept to himself. No need to push his luck.[break][break]

"Lucky number Thirteen! We got this, girl." He muttered to his pokemon.

Phew, Josh had barely qualified. Out of the dozens that had braved the rip currents, only the top sixteen were permitted. The currents' unpredictability made Josh have to constantly adjust the angle of each and every turn, not to mention even straightaways had to be taken at an angle to compensate! Fortunately, a Sharpedo's fin served as quite the precise steering wheel, giving him great control over his shark Pokémon's direction... even if it was on a delay due to how Snacker propelled himself.

A number of celebrities were present, including Top Champion kyle lopez . "Hey, Kyle!" Josh waved before walking over to the Emergent. "How you been? Our match is only a few days away. Don't be too much of a bully with that Wailord, you hear?" he teased. While the giant whale wouldn't have the raw speed a Sharpedo would, such a large creature had to have boundless wells of stamina in his eyes. Even so, it didn't feel right bringing anything but his fastest water Pokémon, especially with the SHARPEDONITE embedded in the saddle he would soon jump into.

He wandered toward Elise Calcifet next. "I see I've taught you well, heh!" her boss teased her about her choice of Pokémon. "Excited to see you here. Would love to see you beat me today - I love seeing students that can outperform their masters. Not that I'll make it easy!" he asked, Snacker hearing those words and attempting to swim circles around Tempest Quinn 's Marina. It wasn't even race time yet, and he was already zooming!

Lastly, Josh stepped toward Tempest Quinn , noticing Snacker's antics. "Hey, Davey," Josh greeted his Badge holder. "Just like back at Mauville, huh? If anyone's gonna finish one-two, it's us. I've got a Sharpedonite now, too!" he bragged to Marina's trainer.

He would have little time to speak to others before FERNANDO SILPH made the call for the Pokémon to assemble on the starting grid -- one of the few places on the course not ravaged by the awful current running from Pacifidlog to Mauville Bay. Sliding onto the shark's back, Josh lightly squeezed his partner's sides, water squirting out of Snacker's rear sphincter. He would continue to chat with Tempest Quinn until Leilani Kalawai'a took their place between them.

His fingers scratched under her jaw, much to her contentment. Reptilian rumbles followed as her eyes closed. He only turned when he heard his name.[break][break]
Pepper lumbered behind him on all fours, no doubt looking comedic when she poked her head around to peer at robin coello as they crossed paths. If she had simply risen up, she would’ve towered over him. “Hey! How goes?” Green eyes skirted to the carracosta, and they lit up in familiarity. “Sure I do– glad to see he’s doing well. Not that I doubted that would be the case.” He waved back to the turtle. The feraligatr also greeted the competition, a low rumbling noise rolling from a toothy maw.[break][break]
“That’s what you think!” he retorted, laughing in good nature as he refuted her claim. “Pepper here’s a real dark horse,” he frowned, pausing, “Er, dark gator. Whatever.” Lam laughed again as the pair bickered over poses. “I gotta say, I think Carracosta looks pretty striking in that swim pose.”[break][break]
Lam’s attention skirted as CIAN MAHER drifted nearer. “I know Ribbit’s pretty quick,” he called out in playful taunt, hand cupped around his mouth, smirk obvious, “But how’re you gonna keep up, Maher?”

"don't worry about the race. we'll be on our best behavior," he tells Josh Devlin.

he's just going to have a nice, chill time like every other silph cup he has attended. placing at the middle would be ideal, as shown by their qualifiers. he didn't want to upstage, nor does he want to look bad, when recreation is his objective.

"our match is an entirely different thing though," he tells him in jest, mostly to unnverve the guy.

as talks died down, he attends to his wailmer, minimized as to not take up much space. given kyogre's situation, he figured it would be nice to train one as a platform.

on the other hand, he's not sure if a race was an appropriate test to see the fruits of their brief training.

It was a shining summer day and Leilani was ready to hit the waves in a racing competition meant to test whose Pokemon was made to be the best of the best! As always, she stood on the back of Koa, number one Blastoise in the world and all time greatest Surf user ever! The primary water-type made his way across the water while the Alolan woman continued to enjoy the sounds of the crowd awaiting a good race. She quickly took her spot, passing by a few choice people.

Once in her place, Lei smirked upon seeing the somewhat familiar face of her boss. Maybe not her boss specifically, but it was somebody who no doubt would be able to make a command and have her snuffed out if she she tried to defect. Not that she could just yet. Her approach was slow while interrupting the flow between him and Josh Devlin .

"S'cuse me." she said shortly. She got in place while standing up on Koa to stretch a little before going to somebody familiar.

An eye went to the gym leader in front of her with a natural curiosity. This was that guy Mahina Kalawai'a went on about, wasn't it? Same spikey hair and gym challenger vibe. How well would he do here? She pushed her sunglasses down to glance at him once he had a sec.

"Heard you're pretty fast, Devlin." she smirked playfully, "Somebody I know's a big fan. Give her a good show."

There was nothing special about the Barraskewda or the rider. They didn’t have a Sygna Suit, the pokemon couldn’t mega evolve, or use Z-moves. They didn’t need it! Eva was confident in the water-type’s ability to rock this course just like they had nearly two years ago.

Wow! Had it really been that long ago?

Eva finished up greeting some fans and taking some pictures and made her way to the starting line. She tugged the race suitable bikini in place and fitted the Baraskewda with his reins. Unfortunately, her positioning wasn’t ideal but that just gave her the opportunity for an impressive comeback! She found her spot between Davey Jones and Elise Calcifet. She gave the ambassador a thumbs up, “Good luck out there!”

Sitting in the last seed was Gwyar Wledig. Eva looked back and gave him and the familiar Aegislash a wave, “Race you to the front!” she teased with a playful smile before readying herself and her pokemon for the starting buzzer.

He wiped away at the water rolling down his temples, his hair still wet from his quick warm up lap around the pathways. A wry smile found its way to his lips as he arrived at his assigned starting place.

Last place, huh? Right off the bat.

Lucky him.

Hopefully, not a spoiler of things yet to come.

Galatine glanced his way as they arrived at the very back of the race. Most couldn't have discerned anything from its gaze, but Gwyar merely laughed, dragging his hand gently over the golden handle of the towering blade.

"What is there to worry? What we lack in speed, we'll make up for with stubbornness." He reassured her, before turning his gaze over to a camera and smiling. "Let's keep ourselves sharp out there. The people of Mossdeep will be watching back home."

And as the newcomer gym leader, he had responsibility to his city to at least give a good showing!

Just as he finished off his peptalk— both to Galatine and to himself— he felt eyes on himself.

Pulling the towel around his shoulders, the blonde glanced over his shoulder, and smiled confidently.

"Hoh? You are challenging me?" He said humorously, sharing a look with his Aegislash. "Must be a champion's boldness... You are on, Morales."

Today was the day of the Silph Cup’s aquatic race and the ambassador sure was ready to try to win after she had placed a little dead last in last year’s land race. Her Dragonair stayed in the water when Josh Devlin came up to her with a wave and a teasing remark. “Hello Josh, I hope to see you at your best with Snacker too and I won’t go easy on you either when you’re my teacher.” The Dragonair gives a little wave of her tail when Elise nods a little to Josh’s teasing. “Yes, I thought of using my Dragonair for the race since you’ve taught me as Resheph’s rider.” [break][break]

Resheph always looked a lot more graceful when Josh was riding on her. Elise did have a lot more to go if she wanted to beat Josh in the race.[break][break]

Eva Morales also greets her when the Head Scientist comes up with her Barraskewda and the diplomat gives a thumbs-up to the blonde woman. “Good luck out there as well, Dr. Morales.” There were a lot of other competitors in the race, some were familiar like Sheriff Michael Navidson of Dewford Town and Dewford’s gym leader while others weren’t very familiar.[break][break]

Elise hoped to Arceus that she could put her training with her Dragonair to use in navigating an aquatic race.

Second place? Not bad for the qualifier, especially for a newcomer to the scene.

After waving to the crowd, Thomas wasted no time getting on the back of Ermac. The former member of the Elite Four scanned his surroundings, and the other attendees.

Thomas recognized most of the competitors, having worked with them in some capacity. Of interest were some of the selections the competitors had. Cian's surprisingly formidable Froakie, for example, was one he questioned. Though a great battler, he wondered how Cian planned to ride such a small Pokemon.

"Let's give the crowd a show they'll never forget!", Thomas told the others.
