EXPOSITION



ROUND 2 OF THE STEEL CHEF 2024 COOKING CONTEST IS UNDERWAY! Throughout the cooking process, keeps darting curious glances at 's Calyrex, despite her visible attempts to remain professional and detached. She seems fascinated in it, for reasons that are probably fairly clear to most Rockets present and perhaps a few League members as well, if any are paying attention.[break][break]

However, the savory odors and exciting processes of the participating chefs is what dominates the round, as they rack their brains while tackling the challenge of creating delicious Kantonian cuisine. As each dish is brought to the judges and evaluated, it seems that simplicity as much as skill or quality is what wins them over.[break][break]

's tempura is a clear winner of the round, as the coating proves light and crunchy over fresh and perfectly chosen seafood. ' omurice is pronounced "homey and comforting", while 's strange, rustic concoction of roast meat, onions, and berries on skewers surprisingly apparently contains appealing flavors and textures. Similarly, 's understated yet classic sushi roll of cucumber, rice, and diced fish wrapped in seaweed is pronounced "delicate and refreshing."[break][break]

Unfortunately, 's monjayaki and 's okonomiyaki don't quite fare as well. The judges smile encouragingly at both contestants after their scores are announced, offering to give suggestions and advice for future rounds if needed.[break][break]

At the front of the kitchen, Aurelie steals a piece of tempura for herself and happily munches on it, before lifting the microphone to her lips. "Well, that was fun! I always love watching people cook, and this was especially enjoyable seeing you all trying different dishes!"[break][break]

Clearing her throat, she continues, "But as they say, variety is the spice of life, so let's move to a very different region, culinarily speaking! For the second round, I want you all to give me your absolute best...Unovan dish!"[break][break]

Nodding again at the clock on the wall, the redhead continues, "Hopefully, this might be easier for some of you in some ways, if you're familiar with Unovan cuisine. But...can you elevate it? With only one-and-a-half hours to cook? Let's see!"


SETTING



THE STEEL CHEF COMPETITION KITCHEN



ALL CONTESTANTS have been brought into a large warehouse near the Lilycove City harbor reserved for the occasion. Inside the warehouse, you find yourself within a high-ceilinged, cavernous kitchen space equipped with numerous rows of prep and cooking stations, one for each chef to use.[break][break]

Each prep and cook station features a gleaming stainless-steel countertop, stainless steel sink, gas stove, and electric oven. At the front of the kitchen is the presentation area, where the judges will sit together at a long table when tasting and appraising the contestants' dishes.[break][break]



A hallway to one side of the kitchen leads to the equipment room and pantry, which contain all the materials, cookware, and ingredients that contestants might need. Planter boxes line one wall of the pantry, filled with fresh herbs and greens that chefs can harvest and use in their dishes.[break][break]

The rest of the pantry is filled with shelves, refrigerators, and bins of fresh produce, meat, seafood, spices and seasonings, dairy, breads and grains, and kitchen staples (eggs, salt, sugar, flour, butter, several different types of cooking oil, cooking wine, and more) to help chefs bring their unique concoctions to life.[break][break]

  • The Steel Chef 2024 contest will feature several rounds with deadlines.
  • Each round will feature a prompt to fulfill.
  • Each contestant must post once per round and make a roll at the end. If you miss a round, you won't be disqualified, but your chances to win will be lower. The roll will represent the judges' opinion of the contestant's dish.
  • At the end of the contest, the contestant with the highest roll total will be the winner. Therefore, please add up all your rolls at the end of each post.
  • Winning the contest will give your character a Clever Pokemon Contest win.
  • Like Shiv, I will not tolerate complaints about not being mentioned, tagged, acknowledged or feeling "useless" in a raid. Unlike Shiv, I'm arbitrary and capricious and will tag and mention people as I darn well please, including high- or low-rolling characters or characters who have the moxie to incorporate green eggs, purple shrimp, eldritch horror, or Eevee flavoring into their creations.

Unovan food was simple. Sometimes, it was a bastardization of other cuisines, but it had its own charm, admittedly. She didn't seek it out as she preferred the comfort of Galarian curries, but she could enjoy a solid Tauros steak and potatoes. She began heating the pan, first. Then, she chose her hunk of meat and chose a variety of spices to complement it. She grabbed garlic and butter to create the perfect substance for basting the meat. Finally, she picked the nicest strand of rosemary she could find. [break][break]

It was simple enough to select a potato for baking. The steak required more attention. She seared it carefully, counting in her head as it went to ensure she went about it evenly. She used a spoon to continue soaking the meat in the garlic butter. The rosemary went in to embed the meat with a gentle aroma and flavor. The baked potato was an easier fiend. It received garlic butter as well once she split it open; then, she gave it a generous helping of shredded cheese and chives. [break][break]

She plated the medium rare steak with the baked potato and took a step back to appreciate its heartiness and simplicity. She was no UNovan patriot, obviously, but she figured it was a dis hthat would make any Unovan feel patriotic.[break][break]

Okay, so maybe Eddie had gone a little too heavy on the doubanjiang, but it wasn't his fault that he didn't know the judges' spice tolerances. Maybe cutting back would have earned him a higher score, but he had to consider the integrity of the dish, Arceus damn it! Eddie pouted a little while he considered what dish to make for the next round, [break][break]

“Unovan food, huh?” [break][break]

Easy at a glance, but decidedly difficult to elevate, Eddie reckoned. After all, how fancy could a burger or a pizza get? He glanced down at Blanche, who simply stared back up with vacant glee, [break][break]

“You got any bright ideas?” [break][break]

Maybe that stare was less vacant than Eddie originally thought, because the Growlithe suddenly took off with a gleeful yip and started dashing toward the kitchen, [break][break]

“Hey, wait up!” [break][break]

By the time he caught up to her, Blanche was nosing open one a stainless steel refrigerator door, bound and determined to get a hold of... well... something, [break][break]

“Whatcha got there, girl?” [break][break]

Blanche was mere inches away from tearing into a particular bit of plastic packaging until Eddie snatched it up and checked the label, [break][break]

“Andouille sausage?” Eddie suddenly beamed and gave Blanche a firm pat on the head, “Blanche, yer a fuckin' genius![break][break]

With a quick dash through the kitchen, Eddie was back at his station to chop up bell pepper and onion and garlic, [break][break]

“Man, they got some bougie stuff here,” he commented idly to Blanche as he poured a glug of some quite pricey olive oil into a high-walled pot, “You think I could snag one'a these bottles ta send back to Mom?” [break][break]

Next went the sausage, just to render out a little fat and get the sliced rounds crispy, until it was replaced by the vegetables. Garlic, crushed tomatoes, and a slew of seasonings followed, until rice and chicken broth joined the bubbling pot after. [break][break]

Now came Eddie's chance to “elevate” the dish; alongside the typical sausage and shrimp, the trainer carefully dumped in some cleaned mussels, separated from their shells, alongside a bit of calamari. It wasn't the typical sort of protein one would find in this specific rice dish, but good God if it didn't make Eddie salivate just thinking about the added seafood, [break][break]

“Jamblaya is kinda like a Unovan version of paella, yanno?” he explained to Blanche, though he was sure that the dog was likely not listening, “So I figured I'd paella-ify it up! How's that for elevation!” [break][break]

Before long, steaming bowls were filled to the brim with savory rice and sausage and seafood. In spite of it all, Eddie wasn't as worried about his score as he thought he'd be, but that probably had more to do with the small portion of jambalaya he was happily devouring himself more than anything else. Thankfully, he did not fuck up the egg flip, and in celebration he downed the entire can of beer before crunching it and disposing of it.

Unfortunately, his spirits fell the moment he heard the theme for the next round—as someone raised by the Italian Alto Marean equivalent of ‘high society’, there was nothing more terrifying than committing the worst sin alive:

The sin of bastardized cooking in the kitchen. Which just so happened to be the current round’s theme: Unovan cuisine.

(He was sure his friend would have a laughing fit at this; but he was going through the five stages of grief all at once he thought he saw a hole opening beneath his feet and taking him straight into the tenth circle of Hell!)

“Perdonami, perché sto per peccare,”1 he muttered and closed his eyes as he said a silent prayer to nonna Angelina and nonno Lorenzo, bless their souls in the afterlife.

Once he’d made peace with the sin of humanity kitchen crime he was about to commit, he had to find something he could make; and all within the span of one and a half hours!

Baking a pie was out of the question since he knew most pies that came out of the oven had to cool down, and then had to be refrigerated either several hours of overnight—he just did not have the time for that right now.

So, he would settle for… meatloaf.

(Reminded him of ’s Salamence, too.)

First thing he would do was to get the oven ready—making sure to get the temperature as close to 190 degrees Celsius (we’re not imperial heathens here) before turning his attention to the ingredients he had to prepare.

He would then reach for an onion and begin chopping at it, as fine as he could manage—although there was almost a disaster where he very nearly sliced off his fingertip!

“Cazzo,” he hissed as he then slid the onions to one side and reached for the parsley and began finely hacking and chopping away at the greens as well.

The rest of the ingredients were easy to combine, so straight into the bowl where the ground lean beef was waiting, he would then add the onions, parsley, and then an unholy combination of other seasonings to taste (eggs, ketchup, breadcrumbs, milk, salt to taste, pepper, paprika, and he almost forgot the minced garlic) before mixing the unholy mess in the bowl together.

Once he was sure this… this conglomeration of meat and spices was as mixed as possible, he would line a loaf pan with parchment paper and scoop the glop into the pan before running towards the oven; which had preheated to 190 Celsius nicely…

And now it was time to make the sauce that went atop the meat…

Turning to his illumina Rotom, which for some reason had a bottle of ketchup inside it beside the cans of beer, he would grab the ketchup bottle (and a new can of beer) before getting a second bowl and mixing the ‘meatloaf sauce’ together the best he could manage.

(Okay, asides from ketchup… brown sugar, garlic powder, white vinegar—yikes, WHAT—onion powder, ground black pepper and salt… goodness, he was more than certain his nonna and nonno were rolling over in their graves right now.)

At least the forty-minute wait would have him popping the second can of beer open and taking a rather long sip from sheer panic, and to disguise the fact he was literally ready to lose his shit.

All too soon the oven dinged the first time—grabbing an oven mitt he would then get the ‘meatloaf’ out of the oven, before spreading the… the sauce all over it; and swearing softly under his breath once the deed was done before returning the pan back into the oven for twenty more minutes…

This was.

On his honor and pride as an Italian an Alto Marean, he’d committed a grave sin, and would probably need to go to confession after this contest was over!



All too soon the oven dinged a second time, and it was time to get the… the ‘dish’ out and onto a wire rack to cool.

This Eevee was going to be the end of him. was a war criminal, but not only that, he was a scoundrel.

"Wait, Hati. Hang out for a minute." Howard said sweetly as he grabbed a pair of tongs and produced a coal from his Colossal's supply. It glowed cherry red. "A hot minute."

The coal disappeared into Hati's tail and a trail of smoke quickly followed. With an unceremonious throw, the admin sent the Eevee back to Temp's station where it could ruin someone else's life. Maybe 's. That little shit was too successful in the kitchen. He had to be humbled, and quickly.

Strange. With the Illumina coloring of the Eevee alongside the fire... Howard narrowed his eye.

Arceus above.













It was glorious.

As for Unovan food...

"Hm... Hm...!" The admin tore into a loaf of bread and began chewing thoughtfully, a deja vu for . Hopefully nobody bore any witness to Howard's secret technique: Bread Blast. "Unovan? Damn. Can I just run to Burger Kingler or something? That shit's processed enough to be Unovan."

While he tossed a few burgers and buns onto his Coalossal, the admin galivanted through Grubbinhub.

Fenelle ponders for a moment as the next region is revealed - an Unovan dish ... and, similiar to , dee actually comes up with a good old classic. Burger. It meets the dough requirement dee has set for demself, so dee swiftly goes to work. Dee couldn't really actually let the dough rest for as long as it needed to, but they'd figure something out. With the help of Magnemite providing electricity and control over the kneading machine, the dough's quickly able to be put to rest so Fenelle could start with the ... boring part.

Patties are constructed, both vegetarian made of potato and normal made with beef and put to rest so dee could finish up the Brioche Buns. A time limit is always quite stressful, and it's even moreso when the limit doesn't actually take baking into consideration, but hey, dee's up for the challenge.

Porygon keeps translating the spoken words around dem to text, but gets distracted quite easily, transcribing some unnecessary chatter so that dee would leave it be for now. Dee would divert its focus later, but for now, Magnemite's warning nudges should be enough. The duo needs to put some more pep into their work, but eventually finish up.

A classic burger with an excellent bun and a decent enough layering in the middle. But the bun is truly good, or as good as it can get at the moment.

The other contestants’ Pokemon weren’t as attention grabbing as the legendary shard that accompanies the ambassador. Elise doesn’t think that the other competitors in the Steel Chef Cooking Competition were paying attention to her assistant than the host herself. Her dish for the last round was a bit passable, but she needed to up her cooking game if she wanted to win![break][break]

When the next round gives the chefs time to make food from Unova, the diplomat would put her own experience with trying the Unovan food here and make chicken fried steak for the judges. In a bowl, she puts the flour and bread crumbs to mix together inside while Elise uses her chopsticks to whisk the full egg in another bowl.[break][break]

That would be the coating for the ground beef that she takes out of the fridge.[break][break]

She already had put the ground beef in the oven when she watches the time tick off until the beef is ready to be coated. Coating the ground beef with the bread crumb and egg batter, Elise’s attempt at a chicken fried steak was ready to be served with a dash of paprika spice to give it a bit more flavor.[break][break]

Psychic powers from the Calyrex bring the plates over to the ambassador as she cuts up the chicken fried steak and places them on each of the plates. [break][break]

“Though I am not familiar with Unovan food, I hope this will be sufficient.” She speaks with a smile as the Calyrex shard comes to help clean the pan. “It’s chicken fried steak, a first attempt at this dish that my father liked from a Unovan restaurant we went to here.”[break][break]

On Charles' own plate, she serves him the chicken fried steak that she made. He eats the little pieces, savoring each of the flavor.[break][break]

Whew, so far so good! There were some amazing meals on display here - El was half prepared to have a bite of them themself! But! They had to focus on the contest at hand first.

And for the next round, they wanted something Unovan! Ooh, they already had an idea - one thing they always thought about with Unova is Casteliacones! Partly cause of 's love for ice cream, 'course... Maybe one day, the two of them could go out to Unova to try the real deal.

But! Getting back on track, what better thing to pair with ice cream than a nice warm pie? Apple pie, in fact! With everyone doing something savory, they needed some sweet to spice it up.

So, as Bibidi worked on the ice cream, they'd work a bit on the pie - peeling and chopping up some apples. Hopefully, this would come out decently - they didn't tend to bake much, so this would be pretty new!

Hati lashed her tail as approached her with the hot coal. She snarled her little mouth, pulling back to reveal the sharp teeth. Sharp teeth that was munching on Howard's food as fast as possible. She chewed faster. Hati would NOT be forced away from her food.[break][break]

The hot coal did make her "Disguise" barrier from her Purified energy POP; the surprise was a light-show, having her scuttling back over to Tempest's table. Said man smiled and leaned over to pat the Eevee between the ears before going back to stirring the cheese mixture he was making- and the noodles! Didn't want them to stick to each other.![break][break]

Temp didn't actually know that much about Unovan food. It wasn't in his usual wheelhouse. But he did know one thing: Mac and Cheese was fucking delicious. Especially the baked kind, with all the fancy breadcrumbs and stuff mixed in. It would also whip up super quick.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Hati lifted her nose to sniff at the air. Her target was honed in on: . Hopping over, the Eevee would jump up on the feral person's workstation (possibly upsetting a bowl they werte using), then dipped her whole face in the nearest non-lethal pot to start lapping at whatever was inside. Her brown tail would stick straight up as she did so.

Her little stepstool offers very little height for her to peek at other tables. All she can do is attempt to go off her senses: The sizzling meats on the pans, the crisping breads, that slight burn of melted cheese -[break][break]

"I don't think I could compete with a burger..." She frowns, looking to Nessie for ideas. And the little Wooper simply smiles back, proudly juggling a few eggs with the tip of their tail.[break][break]

"Eggs, huh?" Grabbing a pot of water, she begins to salt it and heat the stove. "I guess we can try poaching some eggs? And you can go grab some bacon!"[break][break]

This is it, a plan in formation! Eggs benedict, a dish she's seen at that cafe in town every time she runs by during brunch! Crafted from nothing but a faint thought and no certainty that it even classifies as Unovan.[break][break]

He settles into the routine of cleaning up his station, mind spinning with options. “Okay. Unova. That shouldn’t be too hard.”

He’d had plans for this. But he now worried his plans-- a sandwich-- skewed too Paldean. Bash rubs a hand over his eye and groans. He was determined to show he could do food that wasn’t a sandwich! He could make food!

The problem he was having was that all of the foods he considered the most reflective of Unovan tradition were all pretty gross.

“How do I make food from a place with no culture!” Oh, the anguish of the true artist. And his time was running out.

Letting his instinct guide him, he set a pot of salted water to boil on the stove; over top of the rest of his range he set up the little mobile grill bars. Striga ripped open a package of sausages-- superior to hot dogs and brats, in his mind-- and he laid those out over the flame, leaving Striga to turn them every so often and trusting her not to singe her feathers.

When the water boiled, he added a pack of bowtie pasta, then got to work chopping dill pickles from the fridge, an onion from the pantry, and shredding a block of cheddar cheese. He butterflied open some hotdog buns and set them on the grill to toast lightly, then drained his pasta. Mixing it together with the onion, pickle, cheese, and a fuckton of mayo and black pepper, he finished his salad just in time to pop sausages on buns, slather them with relish, mustard, ketchup, and diced onion, and plated it all together in the nick of time.

“Grill dogs and pasta salad!” he announced, sweeping his hand over the concoction. His plate wasn’t the prettiest, but it sure smelled good. "The most american salad there is."

So, the monjayaki was not a success. Funny enough, the person who cooked okonomiyaki also hadn't done too well. Elaine was by no means superstitious, but she couldn't help wonder if that type of dish was cursed in this competition.

Thankfully, this was just the beginning. The contest had more rounds left, so she was hardly out of the running just yet. So, she decided that this time, it was best to go for something more dessert-like. With eggs, sugar, berries, cream cheese, and butter at her side, she rolled up her sleeves and got to the arduous task of baking.

As the cake set in the oven the second time, she made her triple berry sauce--a delectable topping she hoped would enhance the flavor of the dessert when it was ready. But it was at that moment that she noticed something.

"That man really likes throwing bread at things, huh..."

The familiar sight of the forbidden technique BREAD BLAST was not lost on her, but it was not like she could call the man on it. At least this time, the ammunition would be consumed by somebody. Hopefully.

But that didn't matter to her at that moment. After pulling out the slightly chilled cheesecake, she cut it into slices before pouring the Oran-Pecha-Sitrus sauce that she had painstakingly created. Perhaps, this one would be enough to light fireworks in the heart of any patriotic, red-blooded Unovan.

She could only hope.

Wait, they loved it? Maybe he was in the wrong kind of career… Though he couldn’t really march up to , hand in his notice and say “I’m off to become a professional chef.”[break][break]

But thoughts of that dissipate at the mention of their next theme, his eyes lighting up as he listens on. Alba himself was from Unova, so surely he had an advantage in this round, right?[break][break]

Deep frying had served him so well in the last round… but that had been a showcase of savoury food. This round, he’d show off the power of sweet deep-fried food; the tooth-rotting childhood memory of eating doughnuts during one of Nimbasa City’s fireworks displays. He didn’t really miss home, but Hoenn couldn’t really live up to the glitz and glamour that place had to offer.[break][break]

“You can get the jam into the dough, right?” With a normal pipe, there was the risk of having a doughnut where one bite had too much filling, and another bite had no filling; with a Pokémon using psychic powers, though, maybe he could get a more even distribution. And with any leftovers, he could make some quick doughnut holes as a side…

Oscar and Unnamed Starmie returned to their cooking space with a new challenge: Create a signature Unovan dish. This would prove to be a struggle conceptually, as Oscar had only been to Unova once with and they were promptly barred from entering the country again. It can not be too hard though, right? It was just burgers and fries or whatever.

Wait, no that will not do. Everyone would be trying to make burgers, just like the sushi! He had to choose something that would help him stand out, but what? While Oscar pondered intensely, the Starmie with no name had already gotten to work. It was very familiar with Unovan cuisine, having served as a head chef within Castelia City before coming into Oscar's service. That's right, the nameless Starmie has a history all its own. It does not need a name to have an identity!

Using its Psychic abilities, the Starmie Stranger began heating a pot of water and sizzling some bacon. Once the water was boiling, the obscure star would place four eggs into the pot and cover. It then gathered various vegetables, once again slicing them up with its Rapid Spin. As the starmie began slicing up the bacon and now hard boiled eggs, Oscar finally realized what was happening and paid attention.

He was a little aghast as the inconspicuous starmie gathered all of the ingredients in a bowl and began psychically mixing them together. Has it always been this talented? Did Oscar need to be here at all? As the mixing finished, Chef Starmie nudged the bowl toward Oscar. Oscar examined the dish carefully, observing that it seemed to be some sort of salad. It was not a salad he recognized though, seemed more like a chef specialty or something. A Chef Salad, if you would. That would have to do.

Oscar brought his dish before the judges and awaited their judgement.

He was not starting out strong this go round. Lam winced, but quickly waved it off when Peaches looked up at him with a tilt of her head. “Nah, don’t worry about it— we’ll get ‘em this round!” Really make those judges’ faces light up like a fireworks display.[break][break]

Maybe simpler was better.[break][break]

“Can’t go wrong with fries— who doesn’t love those?” he told the Psyduck as he handed off potatoes to her, and began loading up on other items. All of the topping variety. [break][break]

In a pot, he got some oil heating for the eventual frying of the fries. But first came the slicing of the potatoes once they were peeled. The chopping knife was kept away from the duck’s grabbing flippers, but a wave of psychic energy lifted the cut wedges at her behest. Plunk plunk plunk into the hot oil they went to cook until they came out a nice golden brown.[break][break]

Another saucepan was produced and Lam added heavy cream along with a few different grated cheeses. Cheddar, some Colby Jack—all that good stuff. Confident he could leave Peaches to stir it into a simmering cheese sauce, he went back to chopping. Green onions, and despite his personal preference—a couple slice of crispy bacon.[break][break]

The fries, drizzled in melty cheese on a plate were then topped with more cheese shreds, a dollop of sour cream, and then the crumbled toppings. Just like a loaded baked potato. Just…French fry style.[break][break]
