With a splash, Penelope dropped down into the water, both equally prepared and unprepared for the mysteries of the ocean. The currents were rougher than she expected, but with the help of her Blastoise, she was just barely able to push through.

Static drowned her warning as several PIN MISSILES whizzed by, barely missing Cian and herself.

The deeper they swam, the darker the waters became. It drew out a sense of unease from her - a feeling she rather not test.

"Buster, put up a PROTECT. I have a bad feeling about this."

A thick barrier curled around the giant pokemon, effectively blocking any possible incoming attacks from hurting either himself, Penelope, or , who she kept close by. All while she began to peacefully pluck the algea.

Before entering the water Sunny summons a swampert from a pokeball. Waiting their turn patiently when her turn arrives she dives into the water with a messy flop. She quickly corrects her self and prays no one saw her in that embarrassing moment.

Not much of a swimmer, Sunny holds onto her swampert as he guides her down into deeper waters where there were stronger currents. Upon seeing the obstacle she directs her pokemon to use the move bubble.

Many bubbles manifest and are directed towards the schools of pokemon, acting as a make shift cover. Sunny uses it as a chance to slip past them without much trouble. She quickly proceeds to follow after her group.

Professor Remzi probably would've been concerned but as soon as any sign of danger appeared, a little Chewtle appeared paddling beside the underwater archeologist, casting a sudden PROTECT as the scientist carefully peeled off seaweed with his team. This, along with a cloaking BUBBLE from 's Swampert seemed to offer safety for the dig team for a moment even as the top of the trench gets busy. Corsola and Binacle shuffle off, bounced around by the dual type's BUBBLES. Those within the immediate area of her and Proff. Remzi would see not only the wild pokemon fleeing, but also , chunks of calcified sand and plant peeling off with them revealing more and more of the structure. Huge patched are left in plain view carvings of waves and water pokemon, decorated intricately with pieces of an iridescent and pale material that shimmered in the water. [break][break]

Still, an ambush is an ambush. is taken by surprise, and pushes his own Froakie to work quickly, DOUBLE TEAM clearing off more and more algae. Strands of the plant float away, a contract to the pair's more frantic efforts. He wouldn't hear much on the comms but a small chuckle from the easy going Professor. While offered his assistance as well, his Phione would try its best to CHARM it's way to the hearts of the wild pokemon. [break][break]

Though somewhere along the way the pokemon seemed distracted, hovering over a patch of something freshly cleared. A small smudge of navy that its trainer had revealed by pulling a particularly stubborn piece of seaweed and sand. Perhaps it's this distraction, that the Phione fell flat on its mission to distract any pokemon. A colony of aggressive Binacle cry and shout as it floated in a slight daze. The Binacle led with aggression, SLASHing the two. Even with its connection to the fabled prince of the sea, no mercy is shown for Phione or the Champion. Blood curls and unfurls from harsh gashes, marking them both as first blood. [break][break]

Meanwhile, closer to the top uses Buster the Blastoise to defend the team, using PROTECT to deflect stray needles. Too slow to act however, stray needles prick and stick into the water type, the PROTECT faltering and cracking. As they hold their position, and her Greninja make quick work of anything that managed to slip through past the SAFEGUARD and PROTECT shields that materialize at the trench opening. [break][break]

Through them, should bother looking up from Pip-Pip, they would see half blurred figures of the Security Team handling the worst of the chaos. As the little slowpoke tugged the Piplup out of the entanglement he was stuck in, a cloud of sand would puff out before a large chunk of debris fell into the courier's hands. The shiny revealed by the Piplup some sort of iridescent spike, the very top of the thing they were unearthing. It shone brilliantly through the water, attracting the attention of Shellder from below. The disruption and destruction of their real estate infuriated the pesky clams. A barrage of ICE SHARD is sent to the trio in an attempt to shove them away from the peak. [break][break]

meanwhile sends out her ILLUMINA Starmie, their light helping guide the rest of the dig team and stun the pokemon attached to the structure. While a good distraction at first, the pull of the light is too much and brings in Corsola that cry out and try to BUBBLEBEAM the pair away from them. Shellder creep in for the assist feisty as they double down with their pink brethren. [break][break]

Amidst all this, a brown and cream colored doggy paddles its way to Eva. A curious little ZIGZAGOON IN A SNORKEL, idly paddling up to Eva and Starmie, attracted seemingly by the light. Propelled by its back paws and wagging tail the normal type deposits a BIG PEARL into Eva's hands before blowing bubbles and casually paddling away. [break][break]

The ILLUMINA beacon helps 's Dhelmise get to work. As it tries to spin away the seaweed like spaghetti on a fork, something drops out for her. While she ducks down to catch the shiny object, Dhelmise, spotting incoming ICE SHARD, they moves in to intercept its trainer, slammed back into the structure they were trying to unearth. Despite its sacrifice, the scientist is still slashed by stray ice. The attack launched as such force it leaves gashes in her legs as she tries to take cover. Though she hides, a tell tale trial of blood reveals her hiding spot. [break][break]

ABOVE THE TRENCH




released his Octillery, letting her snipe with BULLET SEED the pokemon that made it past everyone else. The pair set to cover the bottom of the trench, trying to keep an eye on others to move in for cover when people like acted as decoys. He relaxed slightly as and @symon sent their Milotic to guard the opening. Champagne's golden scales shone brilliantly as the power of SAFEGUARD released from her. Annalise's Milotic, not to be outshone by her counterpart, swirled quickly and gracefully, creating a strong underwater SURF that cleared back the encroaching Qwilfish. [break][break]

Closer still to Paxton was Captain , directing Citrus the Lanturn to use THUNDER WAVE right as a swarm of fish came to pick off the trainers by their feet. The electric fence cuts through making for easy pickings for and her Hisuan Samurott. The beast AQUA JETTS into groups of twitching pokemon with ease, sending them flying back into the cliffs they'd come out of. [break][break]

's moves are reckless, evident by Paxton's cut off protests. As she and Pharika the Dragalge rush through, they seem to purposefully jostle and aggro as many of the wild water types as possible, amassing quite the crowd away from the Security Team. 's ILLUMINA Aegislash throws in their lot as well as the SPOTLIGHT further pulls more enemies, who snapped and bit at the pair of pokemon. Finally, attempts to use Bastilo the Blastoise to launch a small ice chunk at school of Qwilfish, but maybe the combo is rushed somehow and the wall breaks apart into chunks as it approaches the cloud of fish surrounding their colleagues. The rush of cold distracts some of the pokemon, but soon enough the cloud is rendered helpless by Pharika's DRAGON PULSE. Unfortunately, the Executive Vice President of Rai Corp is also chewed on, their pokemon’s focus on assisting their team a blind spot as a Carvahna angrily latched onto one of Josh’s forearms, swirls of blood flowing out of one of it. While distracted by witty banter with the Head Professor, a panicked Clamperl with an odd coloring moves up to smash its shell shut onto the 's ass trying to make its way out of the battlefield the bottom of the cliffs had become. [break][break]

's ILLUMINA Primarina has just as much success on her own. The publicist turned rookie ranger, finds that her sparkling partner has an uncanny ability to lure the enemy to her, much like her companion's Aegislash. All drop to the sand gently as SING lulls the wild pokemon to sleep. [break][break]

The same can't be said for the other rookies on mission. dives in with his Vaporeon and uses MUDDY WATER. The cloud created seems to confuse the Qwilfish, however it also serves to obscure line of sight for 's Dewott. Through the cover of their own attack Wren's Vaporeon's tail fins are bitten through with a strange sounding fleshy crunch. The blood flowing out put the Carvahna nearby in a frenzy. Kieran's own Dewott is unable to defend, AQUA TAIL missing its mark again and again despite being pinned and stung with PIN MISSILE. As Carvahna surge for Wren, latching onto his shin, and the Qwilfish push forward, riddling Kieran's right arm with needles, a barrage of BULLET SEED cuts through the water, battering the cloud of frenetic pokemon. Streentrup the Octillery provides cover for the injured, and Paxton is gesturing at the pair to move closer in range.

Good work everyone, it looks like a lot of the pokemon are starting to back out! And we are starting to see some of that beautiful mother of pearl inlay, the Children of Water particularly liked! Oh, how exciting!

Proffesor Remzi! Concordas! Distortion incoming, preparing to defend ships-

The radio goes silent as the current seemed to pick up. The faint pull into the trench suddenly jerks hard and if one looked above, the shape of the ship in the distance seemed to be swaying. Natural sunlight is blotted out by the sudden storm as a DISTORTION coalesces above their dig site. Maybe this was why the pokemon were so on edge, and the currents so strong. [break][break]

The wave before is reactive. What follows are more rabid, more frantic pokemon. A group Sharpedo circle the expedition, some biting at each other some tearing through the water towards the Security team. As if that wasn't enough, the hot pink menace, Bruxish rush forward opposite the Sharpedo eager to break into the trench and bite at the Dig Team being protected bellow. [break][break]

The Dig Team isn't doing too hot either. Their progress is evident at least. The top half of the thing revealed the top of a dark blue shrine, dotted with mother of pearl inlays and carved with an array of water types. The pokemon were everywhere on the visible structure, swirling and gliding effortlessly on their wooden canvas. [break][break]

Professor Remzi had made his way towards the bottom looking for something before shoving his arm through a sand wall. He yelped, though nothing came out of the other side to attack him and his Chewtle helped tug him out. Further inspection revealed the entrance to the shrine, the door a bit small and necessitating a sort of crouch if one attempted to walk in. [break][break]

The current jerks again, trying to suck something deeper and deeper. Again, the team would be able to discern a specific cavern or cluster of caverns that seemed to dip into shadow. Water gradually sucked in before it was released. Bruxish slip through under the cover of that Sharpedo ready to bite and tear at the trainers trying to uncover lost architecture. [break][break]

We must keep digging! I have a feeling retrieving the shrine will become more difficult the longer we take!

each member of their squadron does as tasked, whether by more conservative or more aggressive means, and they're able to push away the majority of the wild pokemon from the dig site. or at least, so ollie thinks, as he watches citrus' electricty crackle through the net to make way for .

[break][break] to the councilwoman, he shouts through the comms, "thanks!"

[break][break] his words are early, however, just as he notices both and to the side. "make sure to worth together guys," he advises, as he swims over to them. on the way over, he catches a MEGA SHARD and pockets it quickly.

[break][break] noticing their wounds, however, he becomes alarmed. "are you okay —" he starts to ask the two younger rangers, before a comm from and the professor cuts him off.

[break][break] "watch out!"

[break][break] sure enough, the current picks up and a DISTORTION appears before them. he looks around for his sister, , remembering what she's told him about these things — and what he's experienced himself — but can't seem to find the younger morales in sight.

[break][break] an ELECTRO BALL forms in front of the lanturn's maw as it's antannae glow brightly in the dark water, before jutting out towards the BRUXISH.

[attr="class","hanatext"]There it is, her legendary inability to come up with anything to say in response. Even as reassures her that everything is fine and even offers a ride down, the most she can give is a meek nod, joining him in holding onto his Wailord as it begins its descent into the ocean. And for a moment, though she tries her best to hide it, she tenses at the sight of a dark trench.

But perhaps, that can be brushed away as a brief spark of panic from the sounds of a sudden ambush outside. With quick thinking on the group's part, most of the threats seem to be immediately scared off. Or so she would have thought if it weren't for the strange sounds echoing ominously in the water.

What comes next? Hungry Sharpedos and Bruxish? As she snatches the tiniest of glimpses of the incoming mob, she feels a slight hint of regret. She really should have thought a little more about the team she brought, shouldn't she? But no time to think about that now, what she needs to do is focus on the excavation - Whatever it is about that opening that Professor Remzi has found.

There is a moment where she looks to Locke to see what he does, but as the little thoughts begin to nibble at the back of her mind, she finds herself gesturing towards the shrine instead - As if asking if he'd like to go with her.

With a little help from her Lumineon, she dives a little deeper, her vision slowly adjusting to the difference in light as she moves to inspect the entrance. It's small but there are probably risks involved if they try to force this entrance wide open... Something about architecture and weak points? Something something collapsing the ruins... Yeah, the more she thinks about it, the more she refuses the idea of being trapped underwater.

Waves are summoned to wash over the attacking Pokemon and gently push them away. Sy is happy that many of his comrades chose pacifism over violence so early on in the endeavor. It would have injured him greatly if they were all a bunch of bloodthirsty shmucks leaving a trail of viscera in their wake.

He finds himself distracted by ’s beautiful Primarina and the way she glows. He’s so distracted that he almost flows into ’s electrical barrier-- oops! Sy redirects just in time, kicking his fins down closer to Champagne, watching her twine in serpentine with ’s Milotic and create a strong barrier to protect those below.

In almost slow-motion he watched the shiny Clamperl putter up and attempt to snap its shell around ’s rear end. He was looking up at the man, so couldn’t quite see the result.

Sy’s hiss was a crackle of static through the comms.

“Ouch. Did that get you?”

Seconds later and all hell breaks loose. The call is distortion and Sy feels the water… sizzle? That’s the best word he can come up with for it. He’s never been a poet, after all.

A mass in the distance breaks upon the dive team, revealing itself to be a large conglomerate of Sharpedo and Bruxish with snapping jaws. Sy maneuvers himself behind Champagne and has a sinking feeling that any passive resistance is about to evaporate like forgotten soup on a campfire.

Champagne redirects her efforts to protect the dig team, aiming a dragon tail up from beneath the swarm of Sharpedo, to separate them out and drive them away from those below trying to uncover the shrine.

"Oh, you gotta be kidding me" Josh mutters as the ice wall breaks apart. It's fine, they can always try again. But what they can't try again is the fact that a Carvanha got past their defenses and took a bite out of his arm. The Ranger grit his teeth in pain, quickly drawing his extendable baton and giving the thing a good thrust to get it to let go of him, before Bastilo used a simple brute force attack to try and send the thing flying away. Josh meanwhile, collects some of the ice shards from the failed attack that haven't melted yet and presses them to the wound, quickly pulling out a wrap he had prepared and wrapping up the wound along with the ice. The ice would melt before long, but he could get some cooling on it for a bit this way, and this should put a stop to the bleeding.

"I've got a bleeding forearm, wrapped until it can be healed or patched later" the Ranger spoke into his comm, taking steady breaths to keep calm before he would hear the sounds of something coming up above them. Josh had hoped to surface temporarily to deal with the wound more properly, but that would have to wait. Sharpedo and Bruxish were headed for the dig crew, which was bad. A real middle finger gift from Arceus, complete with rift.

"More bogies coming your way" Josh spoke up to the others as Bastilo shot another Ice Beam at their ranks. This time, Josh climbed onto Bastilo's back to better protect himself.

It seemed was not too thrilled with how Shalin was handling her job, despite the effectiveness of her tactics. Someone had to be the decoy, after all, and her work helped the dig team out a lot! Once the coast was clear, she reported as such to the charter managers. "Scratch that, more on the way! Lots of them! Lots of Sharpedo. I'm going after their school leader. Come on, Pharika! Let's get to it!"

The venomous dragon swam toward the school, her side fins sparking and crackling as she prepared to discharge a devastating THUNDERBOLT in the general vicinity of the many Sharpedo. "Take me as close as you can to their leader," she requested of Pharika, forgetting to silence her comms. Thankfully it was tuned just to the Captains and not the entire operation. "Right before we cross them, fling me toward the biggest one. Then once I've drawn it away, fire. Okay, Pharika?"

With a nod, the two began to execute their plan. The school approached with serrated maws wide open, which was still a scary sight. One wrong move and she could have been seriously hurt! She wasn't going to pass up a golden opportunity like this, though. Perhaps she could even convince the giant, zooming shark to join her!

Just before the two were going to collide, Pharika bucked Shalin over her head and toward the school's leader. Reaching for the sea bully's large, dorsal fin, Shalin attempted to grab it and pull herself astride the wild Sharpedo. If successful, she would attempt to steer it using applied forces to the base of its large fin, much like a trained Sharpedo would be controlled. As skilled of a rider as felt she was, it was going to take more than a little effort for a Sharpedo to buck her off! Once she and the rest of the operation was at a safe distance, Pharika would discharge her THUNDERBOLT in the middle of the school, trying to incapacitate as many of them as possible.

Dangerous Pokémon defended against. Her work was so far coming along smoothly.

She gave her Hisuian Samurott an acknowledging gesture as it found a moment of respite while she took stock of the situation.

But danger was, as always, abundant. A sudden distortion appeared above the sea. But its effect rippled deep beneath the waves.

A Horde of Angry Pokémon swam about. Sharpedo at first. But they were quickly joined by the pink menace Bruxish.

Elinor was quick to command her Hisuian Samurott into action. With a simple gesture did the watery fighter charge forth AQUA JET once again its method of pinpointed strikes, aiming to deal with the Bruxish while leaving the surroundings unscathed.

Alright, so maybe too much light wasn’t a good thing necessarily for something like this. She felt stupid for having her Starmie out to begin with. of course she knew the underwater pokemon would be attracted to the light, “Ah!” Eva squeaks, driven back momentarily by the rogue BUBBLES of the Corsola and Shelder. The Starmie is quick to float behind her, making sure she isn’t blown too far off the dig site. Soon, she finds her bearings again and it back between and , pulling at seaweed to expose the brilliant Mother of Pearl beneath.

Eva promptly returns the Starmie before releasing a large Alomomola to help with their cause. With so many aggressive pokemon, Eva opts for the defensive. She trusts the security team to do their job well.

“Kyle! You’re bleeding!” she suddenly gasps, seeing the dark crimson floating idly by his arm. Wanna know what else attracted not-so-friendly water-types: Blood. Eva frantically points towards the blood and her pokemon knows what she wants. A soothing HEAL PULSE washes over and Phione, attempting to stop the bleeding and not attract more unwelcome company.

However, a rather unexpected companion shows up. It’s impossible to consider the Zigzagoon a threat cause it’s just so darn CUTE. Its wagging tail indicates its friendliness and Eva accepts the Big Pearl dropped into her hands. She’s still a bit in shock seeing a swimming Zigzagoon with a snorkel, “Uhhhh thank you!” she tucks the Big Pearl away and frantically starts to tear seaweed again, “You wanna help?” she asks the pokemon motioning towards the ruins.

When she looks back at the Zigzagoon, a flash of magenta catches her eye heading straight for . . . ’s ass?!

Eva gasps as the Clamperl attempts to latch on. Not his ass! It’s one of his many great features! “Gwyar, are you ok?!” she doesn’t have too much time to fawn over the tragedy as something more sinister creeps their way. The familiar flash of purple lightning makes her flinch. The currents shift and the water itself becomes more violent as well as the pokemon around them, “Ahhh shit, we gotta get inside,” Eva tears at the seaweed, searching for an entrance that was already found by the other Professor.

There was a deep stinging pain in his arm. He felt it before he saw it, entirely too focused on his dewott, which was panicking a little in the water. It was only then did he note the quills in his arm, cutting through his wetsuit. A deep red stained through, making him feel a little dizzy. Maybe he was a bit of a baby, but he'd never liked the sight of blood (but who the heck did?). Dewott was struck by pin missle, but did not seem too in pain about.

There was a brief during which, he was able to see the Clamperl coming and also, realized the water around him would not let him react in time.

"Oh dear." He gasped eloquently in a possibly insufficient reaction.

CHOMP!

"BLOODY HELL!" He yelped into the comms next in a much more appropriate response, his hands clamping(HAH) around the mollusk nibbling on his ass cheeks, attempting to pry it off his vaunted behind with much effort. "Just... LET. GO!"

With a forceful yank, the man pried off the hungry Clamperl with a furious huff, holding it up to eye level with narrowed eyes. He was going to tear its world a a-bloody-sund—

He found himself staring at a golden pearl, gleaming within its Royal purple carapace...

"... Haaah." The man released the soft, defeated sigh of a trainer who had found a random Shiny and could no longer bring himself to heap abuse upon it.

Upon hearing @symon and , the man's shoulders fell. People had seen that?

"No, no... I'm... Urgh, fine. Seems like my pride was the only thing seriously injured."

He sighed, before turning his gaze towards his Empoleon.

Which had been standing there laughing for the better part of a minute.

"Tiberius." The man's voice cut through the laughter like ice, a thin smile on his lips. "How curious to see you idling at such a critical time..."

The Empoleon began to sweat bullets.

"Perhaps you need more serious training...?" He muttered softly— to which the Empoleon immediately launched itself face first into the caverns, drilling into it desperately.

"Hn."

Locke took a moment to admire the artifact that fell into his hand, briefly catching the security team and the chaos behind him in its warped reflection. Before he could turn to get a better look at the situation, however, a bubbling cry from Pip-Pip alerted him to the awakened Shellder and the oncoming Ice Shards.

The disguised Latias forcefully shoved them out of the way of the initial volley, and between the Slowpoke shoving them from behind and the Piplup dragging them forward they quickly escaped the ruins' peak. The mollusks thankfully didn't seem interested in following for now, and they rejoined and the rest of the dig team just as the shrine's entrance was uncovered.

They were nearly ready to accept the other girl's invitation to investigate the entrance, but changed their mind on noticing the lack of researchers surrounding a conspicuous set of caverns. The courier shook their head, pointing between themselves and the shadowy depths as they silently volunteered for the task, before following the current further downwards.

Latias, meanwhile, had broken off from her ward to momentarily tend to the injured security team. would find a Slowpoke swimming up to him-surprisingly alert for the species-before pressing her big, yellow nose to his arm and releasing a Heal Pulse. She gave the ranger another once over for any other wounds, then quickly swam away again.
