Thomas watched as Michael Navidson maneuvered past him, as well as kyle lopez. It was the final lap, and Thomas was still in eleventh place. The pressure was on, for sure. And with the whirlwinds whipping up, due to interference from Wild Pokemon, the course was looking precarious. Thankfully, his position in the race made things more manageable.

Ermac pressed upward, attempting to take advantage of the more predictable state of things.

Even if she only pushed ahead of one person, it didn't phase Genny. Uzi looked back, feeling as if he had done something wrong, and as Genny leans forward through the narrow corridor, she smiles. "Not over yet, Uzi!"[break][break]

And wouldn't you know? The whirlwinds started, and it gave Genny ideas. "Keep going! Flip Turn with the wind, and ride with it!" One fist thrown outwards and upwards, Uzi does just that, utilizing the FLIP TURN to attempt to turn on a dime.[break][break]

She could feel herself getting more and more hyped up.[break][break]

Luck just wasn't on their side anymore.

Perhaps attempting to seize the initiative early had been a mistake for a slow rider. He would keep that in mind for the next race. For now...

"But of course! Always bring the best pokemon for the job at hand!" Gwyar shouted back at Michael Navidson over the roar of whipping waves, before grimacing as the man burst forth into a whirpool, feeling the tassels wrap more firmly around his ankles.

"Come on... We can still make it through this...!" Gwyar muttered lowly as he crouched lower, trying to minimize air resistance as they rapidly approached the next obstacle.

If nothing else, being this far back made it a little easier to maneuver around the tempest of the seas left in the fleeing pokemon's wake.

"Come, Galatine! We are not out of this race just yet!"

tenth place wasn't so bad if he wants to keep his position.

still, kyle doesn't have enough time to worry about his standing on the race. what was more important was not getting blasted off by the winds and being made a fool by the race's obstacles.

he holds on to his wailord, making sure he doesn't fall off.

"you got this."

in a battle scenario, he's certain he can guide his pokemon. a race was different though, as they have to keep moving forward and using a wailord's natural strengths effectively needed finesse.

kyle hopes that its weight holds them down, allowing the waves not to impact them as much.

THE STORM IS COMING

RACE OFFICIALS WERE ABOUT TO CALL FOR A CAUTION when the flock of disturbed bird Pokémon had loosed a series of WHIRLWINDS upon Pacifidlog's western sea. Before they could make the decision, the flock had already left, but not without an unexpected challenge for the racers! Those near the front had almost no time to react, lam logan ordering his FERALIGATR to sink beneath the rotating funnel. Though the aquatic predator had the strength to swim through the resulting whirlpool, there was no opportunity to get to its leading side, robbing it of a lot of speed.[break][break]

Jack Napier 's MANTINE was far more used to such conditions. A trio of TERASTAL BALLOONS materialized over the broad water-type's head as a crystalline body formed around its entire frame. BOUNCING along the rough water with precision that may have put even the Alolan surfer's balance to the test, the duo caught the very edge of one of the WHIRLWINDS, flinging them forward. Inspired, others had the same idea, Tempest Quinn and Eris Halla setting their sights on the left side of the largest cyclone. The wonder child and her WOOPER went TRAILBLAZING through it, barely holding off Tempest Quinn and his SHARPEDO.[break][break]

THOSE FARTHER BACK IN POSITION had more time to line up with the cyclone's leading edge. From the back of the field, Raju Mystic and kyle lopez observed the way the whirlpools were throwing racers about, seeing what Eris Halla did and duplicating it the best they could. Being lighter for their size, the whirling water's effects on them were amplified, sending them flying forward faster than even an Aqua Jet would. robin coello and CIAN MAHER were rocked by quite the wake as the duo zipped past their CARRACOSTA and FROAKIE. Hoenn's hotshot wouldn't give up so easily, though, the SYGNA SUITED Gym Leader ordering the use of DOUBLE TEAM. In addition to forming a wall of Cians and Froakies in front of Robin to discourage her from passing, he made up a lot of time on kyle lopez and Raju Mystic in front of him.

They wouldn't be the only ones, though; on the outside line, Genevieve Cromwell and her VAPOREON took a dramatic, whiplash-inducing FLIP TURN that utilized almost half of the largest vortex. The Eeveelution and Ranger surged forward at impressive speeds, their wake sending Gwyar Wledig wildly off course and toward the hazard's right side. Going against the whirling water robbed the AEGISLASH of most of its speed, the sword-surfer having to put his weight into it to escape its clutches. By the time they were out of trouble, Michael Navidson was quite far in front of him, thanks to the KINGDRA's WHIRLPOOL augmenting the one the wild birds had formed. [break][break]

THE MASTER OF FASTER Josh Devlin , saw the opportunity. As the KEY STONE embedded inside the Champion's MEGA GLOVE glinted in the sun, his SHARPEDO's jaws opened wide, taking in a copious volume of water as it MEGA EVOLVED. The added speed and strength enabled the aquatic predator to cut through the funnel's center with ease.[break][break]

AS POWERFUL AS A BLASTOISE'S WATER CANNONS WERE, they, too, had their limits. Without warning, the pressure coming from Leilani Kalawai'a 's dropped substantially, forcing Elise Calcifet and her DRAGONAIR to make a sudden swerve -- right into the same whirlpool that the larger Pokémon was swirling about in. Her DRAGONAIR got swept up in its current, circling around it once before putting on a desperate burst of speed to escape its vicious clutches. The BLASTOISE was not so fortunate; when its water cannons stopped completely, the Pokémon simply floated in place. Seeing the two in trouble, officials sent a Braviary to airlift her and her DISQUALIFIED partner off the course.[break][break]

THOUGH THE BIRDS WERE GONE, the weather wasn't done playing tricks on the racers; as they rounded a long curve that drove them against the strong current, the wind changed direction and picked up, making the waves choppy enough to scare away all but the most skilled and avid surfers. Having to swim against such rough waters would push even the most stout of Pokémon to their limits in the race's final lap!

Prompt: As the field rounded a large islet following the hair-raising windstorm, the natural wind took a dramatic shift, making the water quite choppy as the current clashed direction with it. The turns ahead were gentle for the most part, but having to contend with an unpredictable surface that could leave Pokémon in midair for a split second could make navigating them a real challenge, especially for those in heavy traffic! It could be quite bumpy, particularly for riders of smaller Pokémon![break][break]

Success! Finally breaking through, and Genny called it right this time. Her hazel eyes look on with excitement, as she looks behind her. "Yo, Josh! Just stay back there, kay?" Her tongue out with a wink. And it wasn't just Josh Devlin either, with Michael Navidson , Gwyar Wledig , and Thomas Benoit also eating her dust. She can't help but seem a little smug that her plan came together. Turns out, FLIP TURN had its perks.[break][break]

So, as she whips around to those ahead, she can feel it now. This was the home stretch. This is what it felt like to be alive. She can see a few ahead of her; the one guy she challenged in Vital City with CIAN MAHER , and lam logan was really far ahead too.[break][break]

Still a long way to go.[break][break]

"Let's go, Uzi!" she calls out excitedly, as they rush into the windstorm. It kept moving in wild, choppy waves. Each turn is easy, but maneuvering them would be difficult.[break][break]

They still had plenty of energy to spare. Uzi wasn't out of the running, but they had to make the best of the situation to conserve energy for the final stretch. Genny looked over every avenue, and nods. "Jump up, and Aurora Beam at the back side of the waves! Make ice slopes to keep our speed up!" To the order, Uzi leaps upwards, and uses AURORA BEAM on the back of wave after wave to keep the speed.[break][break]

Robin almost fell into a Froakie at the speed folks whirled past her. She groaned as more people passed. "We mighta had beginner's luck," she whined. Carracosta made an encouraging noise, but Robin wasn't so sure anymore. "This is what I get for not having one of those silly suits." She should've trained Carracosta to use aqua jet or something, but the pokemon was a gift, and it'd felt wrong to change him.

She had no such qualms now. After the race, she was going to teach Carracosta every speedy move in the book. She'd make the fastest Carracosta to ever walk the planet. "Let's just try not to lose more ground, yeah?"

They had managed to coast through the previous wind funnels; and thankfully his timing of popping out the funny balloons paid off to be a good choice, all things considered.

However now was their actual challenge since they—

This was actually the first time he’d ridden on the back of his Terastalized Mantine under such conditions (as they had very little time to practice before the race) but all things considered they were doing considerably well—all he had to do was keep his balance on the suddenly crystalline surface!

“Come on, Ri! We’re so close!” he would cheer the Mantine on; seeing that the waters up ahead were looking particularly choppy.

All he could do was lean into the wind; brace himself for a potentially rough patch of waters as the choppiness was sure to throw their rhythm off…

It was a hell of a spectacle! The series of Whirlwinds created a waterspout. The blonde had never seen one before. Well, not this close anyways. But his powers of observation were always top notch. After watching how Eris Halla got around it, Samurai and Raju mimicked it, surging ahead and past several contestants. kyle lopez was still ahead of him with his obnoxious Wailord. Next was the curve...and the duo tried to take the curve hard on the inside to catch up and pass Kyle and his Wailord. It was a choppy journey, the waters much more rough than the first time. But his Golisipod was reaching her limit. For such a long race, she wasn't trained for it. Nevertheless, he whispered to her encouragment, and as a result, she swam like she never did before! Hopefully at least keeping her place in the pack...

TLDR
Watches how the other racers in front of them react to the cyclones.
Takes inspiration from Eris Halla to surge ahead!
Stays on the inside to try to pass kyle lopez.
Whispers encouragement to Samurai to keep her in the game!

The final lap is upon her and the rest of the aquatic racers. Elise had been ways behind the others and she thought that she wouldn’t be winning this one. She checks on the status of her Dragonair since she’s worried that Bavsargra would be tired. Since she hoped to at least get some experience in racing in aquatic courses like this, the diplomat wouldn’t mind losing here and getting to do this next time in her training. [break][break]

When her Dragonair goes across the water around the islet, the wind makes the water choppy and the female dragon attempts to do her best in navigating around the current. Bavsargra uses her speed in going through the choppy waters and makes the turns when she sees them. [break][break]

Josh couldn't believe his desperate maneuver of speeding through the whirlwind actually worked. Though he didn't pass it in the exact place he'd liked, going through its center instead of the left side, where he would be able to launch forward the fastest, he didn't lose all his speed. Even so, he showed not one shred of excitement, a glare of pure concentration on his face. Sharpedo were already notoriously challenging to control. With the ludicrous speed that Mega Evolution bestowed, it was even more difficult now.

Fast as Snacker was, he wasn't the only one to put on a truly amazing burst of speed: he got to witness kyle lopez , Raju Mystic , and Genevieve Cromwell ride the whirlwind forward. All three of them whizzed past with great speed, avoiding the heaviest of the traffie the Master of Faster found himself in the thick of. He was so proud of the latter two, especially Genny. It was clear that the Ranger had learned much from their aquatic race together.

The wind's sudden reversal caught Josh off guard as he rounded a large sandbar, the course twisting roughly to the east. Every wave bounced Snarker above the surface briefly, making it impossible for the racer to turn with the precision he wanted. Though he could change his angle in mid-air, the Sharpedo wouldn't start turning until he hit the water again. The turn would also be abrupt, whipping Josh back and forth and making it difficult for him to correct.

As Josh zoomed through the light turns while being buffeted by the wind, he could feel some sputtering coming from Snacker's rear. Was he tiring? Or was it the lack of water entering his mouth while he was in the air? He suspected it might be the former and took one hand off the steering fin to give the shark an encouraging pat.
