Things were not looking too good for the former Elite Four. The race was nearing its end, and he found himself in second to last place. If he didn't turn things around, then there was a good chance he'd end up taking last.

The good news was that while the next part of the course was rough, Ermac was well suited for this sort of thing. On top of his size, the ghostly fish was built to endure.

So off they went, doing their best to ride out the waves ahead of them, hoping not to get put in dead last.

Despite their best efforts, the wind rocked them back, and his feraligatr let out a bubbled rumble of annoyance as two more racers whooshed past them on the fringes of the volleyed whirlwinds.[break][break]

“Don’t even worry about ‘em, Pepper!” he chimed to her consolingly as she rose higher to the water surface—still rushing forward with the heavy push of sturdy limbs. “We’re totally still in this—just focus! Don’t let it get in your head.”[break][break]

The reptile snapped her wide jaws—still irritated by the sudden loss of their lead, but acknowledging him advisement. Her pupils dilated with ferocious gleam as she locked into a concentrated state. Determined to close the gap again. Had it been permitted, she might have blasted the path ahead with icy frost to skate ahead with greater ease, a path frozen in place. Instead, Pepper continued to churn the water with her legs, urging them forward to push through the worst of the choppy waves working against them.[break][break]

The current lashed back against them unevenly, and the feraligatr skipped over the surface once before her bulk pulled her back down, half-submerged once again.[break][break]

Lam didn’t bother to look back just yet either— not daring to see how close behind anyone else was. There was only the way forward until they could put on their last burst of speed once they’d successfully rounded the lazy bend in the route.

shooting up in places didn't even occur to kyle at the moment. his attention was elsewhere, namely not falling down to the waters below and getting ran over by other contestant's pokemon.

the winds make it so much harder to hang on, and the twist and turns that leave them guessing if they're going to fly overboard or not has kyle hanging on for his dear life.

only one instruction was given to his pokemon for this leg of the race.

"you better stay course this time!"

the first jump already has his heart racing. a pokemon like wailord wasn't meant to be used like this, but here he was, participating in a race with a pokemon that doesn't fit the conventional norm.

WHEN WINDS AND CURRENTS BATTLE ONE ANOTHER, the water's surface is oft uncomfortable or even dangerous to traverse. With every tall crest, surface swimmers found themselves at the mercy of the air, most Pokémon unable to turn in the foreign, gaseous environment. With the disqualification, and her DRAGONAIR only needed to battle the wind and the course. Though the rules prohibited flying, the aquatic Pokémon's ability to do so let her control her trajectory and make up time on @thomas in front of her. His BASCULEGION hung tough, taking advantage of its great size to main control. They surged past 's AEGISLASH, who was badly buffeted by the waves and forced to make a last-minute correction to avoid wiping out entirely. [break][break]

'S EYES WERE ON , keeping a steady hold on his Pokémon's emotions... until his goading remark causes the KINGDRA to kick things into dangerously high gear. In a reckless DRAGON DANCE, the dragon-type zipped ahead of the Elite Ranger and her VAPOREON. That wouldn't last long; one of the larger waves left the scaled, long-snouted Pokémon in an involuntary leap made taller from their great speed. A sudden and strong correction kept the duo from crashing out entirely, though the competition they were trying to pass was now distant. He would only be able to watch the girl and her long-tailed water-type utilizing AURORA BEAM to freeze the back side of each wave, causing the team ahead to gain ground on 's tiring GOLISOPOD and 's steadily-swimming CARRACOSTA.[break][break]

WHILE NOT A MARATHON by any stretch, battling the shifting current had taken its toll on much of the field. may have underestimated just how much the race had worn his FERALIGATR out. The two pushed hard to keep pace with and , their WAILORD and FROAKIE trading fourth place back and forth with one another. They would all be forced to yield to a determined MEGA SHARPEDO opening its mouth as wide as it could. He reclaimed all his lost position and then some, skipping across the surface like a high-performance watercraft on full throttle.[break][break]

's SHARPEDO WAS ALSO MAKING A BIG RUN AT  and his MANTINE, the Beast leaning low enough to lay almost flat on his Pokémon. Each wave yanked at him hard, but his strength held as he zoomed past . Had they sufficient runway, the dark-type would have easily overtaken the large ray common in the island region. As he rounded the final curve, though, the narrow corridor to the finish line was in sight.[break][break]

LITTLE DID KNOW IT WAS HIS RACE TO LOSE.

Marina sped through the water, her natural Speed Boost and training finally helping her reach top speed. She zoomed past and her wooper, mouth open and teeth chomping with in her sights. Water pulsed out of her backside, her natural abilities helping her greatly in this race.[break][break]

"Alright, Marina! Show 'em whose boss!" Tempest called over the water. Mischief stuck in his voice, the finish line in his eyes.[break][break]

The bracelet on his wrist started to glow faintly, Marina doing the same for a moment. All at once, the power of her Z-Move washed over her. A massive spout of water pulsed underneath her, pushing her forwards and slightly upwards. She gnashed teeth, using the flood of powerful water to push herself to her limits with a sudden blast of blazing speed.[break][break]

Though it was narrow, the home stretch was long, and it was with the current. This was the speedy shark's chance to shine. The Master of Faster was a title that only one person in Hoenn held, and that was the Mauville Gym Leader. Furthermore, he was atop arguably the fastest Pokémon on the waves. Sharpedo were already known for being nearly inescapable predators. Mega Evolved, they could swim against currents produced by hurricanes.

If there was one combination Pokémon of Pokémon and trainer that could make a miraculous comeback and steal this race from under 's nose, it was .

"Floor it, Snacker!"

The water-type violently snapped his jaws before expelling a violent torrent of water from his rear, his rider bracing himself as low against the steering fin as possible to avoid being hurled off. If and wanted to hold their ground and cut the Gym Leader off, their Wailord and Froakie would have to deal with a very angry shark determined to cross that finish line first.

had gotten ahead of her momentarily, and Genny's eyes were alight in flames. "Whoa." She was able to keep her speed up, but the AURORA BEAM was the best play at the moment, using each slope to keep her speed going. A slide forward, and they were more or less keeping their position, with only one caveat: had broken ahead again.[break][break]

It was Genny's turn. "Uzi, give it everything you got! Run atop the water to the finish line! Quick Attack!" Uzi's eyes light up, as he leaps upwards, on the water itself, and begins a full-bodied sprint, the white light behind the Vaporeon following behind him, as Genny holds on best she can.[break][break]

"We can do it! Top eight! GO, UZI! GO!"[break][break]

The mewing of the Vaporeon screams out, Genny's final sprint to the end at hand.[break][break]

Things were not good. While the duo managed to navigate through, they got passed by two people. Raju wasn't known to give up easily. So They just swam as fast as possible. It was the home stretch, and Samurai pushed herself even further! They were almost done. Sure, they weren't going to win, but maybe he'll end up in the single digits. They were already on the brink, in ninth place. He wanted to at least hold this position. But that didn't mean that he wasn't going to try to pass and her Carracosta! This was their last chance this race to give a good showing, and they were going to take it!

Thomas found himself passing , and closing in on . Before he knew it, he found himself at the final stretch of the race. Though he wasn't exactly going to finish strong, the fact that he even finished was enough for him.

"Alright, Ermac. All or nothing.", he told the Basculegion. "Max speed ahead! Agility!"

The Ermac concentrated himself for a moment, before zooming ahead as fast as he could.

Through the second to last obstacle of the race, the home stretch for the aquatic race was all that remained for Elise now. An adrenaline rush washes over the royal ambassador, she is determined to try and make it. Her Dragonair pushes through the current of waters too as the dragon attempts to weave through the other competitors and their Pokemon. [break][break]

Being behind in the race had hurt both her and her Dragonair in trying to improve their standing.[break][break]

“This is it, there is no turning back.” Elise tells her Dragonair when she flicks the reins onto the serpentine blue dragon. Bavsargra increases her speed with Extreme Speed as the Dragonair speeds through the water in an incredible display of grace. This was the last chance, she and her dragon type mount will have to make this count![break][break]

the home stretch presents itself.

this gives the people the last chance to get their reserves and use it to force their limits to the extreme without much consequences. one after the other, people boost their way to the finish line, much like kyle does.

the objective was to get a higher placing, but kyle's intent was to just end the race as soon as possible. as far as he knows, he still was in the middle of the pack, which was what he wanted. finishing at this placing was good enough.
